Chaos ensues as Rome abandons Britain, leaving native Britons alone to defend their shores from the growing Saxon invasion. Set in 5th Century Britain, this retelling of the traditional legends of Merlin, King Arthur, and Avalon, blends a mixture of historical fact with Arthurian fantasy. Refreshingly innovative, the tale spans the mysterious birth of Merlin, climaxing with the conception of Arthur, the legendary future king of Britain. A young Merlin advises three High Kings: to fight through the bedlam, fight for the right to rule, fight to save the future treasure of Britain! Interlacing love, revenge, mystery and murder, with a dash of humor, this coming of age adventure is a guide through the shrouded tales that embrace the Sons of Avalon.

It somehow feels iniquitous to post this review. Yet, as egotistical as it may seem, I loved reading the first book in my "Sons of Avalon" series, as much as I enjoyed writing it. In the novel's final draft alone, I read it from cover-to-cover over fifty times. I even went so far as to have Adobe Acrobat read the story to me in a variety of voices.
Logically, I kept waiting to get bored, to skip ahead, to be impatient with the plot or characters. Yet, it never ceased to surprise me how much I enjoyed the story...after all, I was merely the scribe, Merlin was the Bard.
I would find myself reading along and wondering what would happen next; even though I had written each chapter...it was the oddest sensation. Even now, after its publication, I still find myself pulled into the storyline. Obsessed or possessed, maybe both! I hope you enjoy Merlin's adventures, as much I enjoyed transcribing them from Merlin's memories.
This book is truly amazing! The dialogue is dramatic, the plot is complex, and the story is so memorable! Dee is so talented. She has such a beautiful writing style; the prose is pretty and flows nicely through the book. She uses such vivid and clear description; I felt as though her well-painted scenes were really happening.
I love how Dee took a look back on the famous wizard Merlin's past and showed us how the boy Merlin could have been like; and I love how Merlin matured throughout the book. And I love how round and complicated Lot's personality was; half the time I hated him, and the other half I saw his side!
One thing that was really cool about this book: instead of focusing the "camera" on just the MC, Dee sometimes flashed the lens to a different character for a moment, so we got to know what multiple characters were thinking at one time!
I am so glad that she sent this book to me, and I cannot wait for the next installment in this fabulous series! Astounding job, Dee! :D
This is a great story. It is full of adventure, magic and humor. It is very different from other Merlin stories I have read and held my interest. It was a hard book to put down, and I took it with me everywhere I went until I finished it. I found it easy to read and the plot easy to follow. I could tell that the author put a great deal of thought into the writing. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
I have long been a reader of the folklore of my native England, and the Arthurian legends hold a special place in my heart, so it is always intriguing to find a different take on the birth of those legends.
The Sons of Avalon: Merlin's Prophecy, is a highly entertaining story, one that is definitely worth reading.
As delightful as the story is, it does leave the reader with a lot of unanswered questions that one hopes the author intends to cover in her sequel.
After witnessing a tree shattering lightening strike, Arden and Enid hear the cries of a newborn child emerging from the tree’s scorched remains. The elderly couple take the helpless child to raise him as their own. Guarded by the ever watchful eye from a high above hawk, the boy receives the fitting name of Merlin. As the boy grows, it becomes clear through demonstration of both his remarkable intelligence and mysterious abilities that Merlin is no ordinary child. This results in his being sought after by the most powerful king of the time putting both himself and his family at risk.
Driven by forces beyond himself, Merlin uncovers his parentage and life’s purpose on the beautiful shores of fabled Avalon. As he grows, Merlin learns natures mystical properties from the Druids while continuing to enhance his innate fantastical gifts. As advisory to Britain’s powerful kings, Merlin crafts the cascade of events necessary to protect her shores at all costs leading to the conception of the great King Arthur.
In Sons of Avalon, Merlin’s Prophecy, Dee Marie creates the beginnings of an epic series. Marie’s writing is reminiscent in voice and style to Ken Follett’s World Without End and Pillars of the Earth. Her description of the period and locals are a testament to her substantial research and travels. Her imagery was such that not only was I mentally transported to Arthurian Britain but I could almost feel the stinging bite of the ice cold rain as it pelted the characters in their journeys betraying the areas frequent inhospitable weather. My favorite passage takes place at Stonehenge where Merlin calls forth the powers of Earth through a sacred ceremony honoring the slain royals of the time.
Marie’s writing is extremely refined not only in style but plot. She introduces various story arcs wetting the reader’s appetite nesting them just right so as not to resolve them too quickly. There were a few elements I wanted oh so much more of but did not get. Merlin’s time with the Druids for example, what happened? How did he learn their magic? Nimue, Merlin’s love interest, makes occasional appearances but is off on the periphery. Finally, the rationale for Merlin’s singular focused motivations at times wasn’t always clear for me. These elements, however, may likely be additional story arcs ripe for closure and exploit in the series next offering.
For those interesting in Arthurian legend and historical fiction, Sons of Avalon is a must read!
Carole Sutton's Review of Sons of Avalon, Merlin’s Prophecy
I have never been a follower of Arthurian legends and folklore, but this book intrigued me. For a start, I loved the story of its conception, Merlin whispering to the author in the night to write his story, what a wonderful little tale in itself. Next, the striking artwork of the cover, the hawk’s eyes and the reflection of the boy, drew me onwards.
The first chapter and the dramatic entry of the infant Merlin, and his recovery by the elderly couple who brought him up to the age of six was a brilliant start. I became a little lost at one stage when Merlin’s age changed but the time he was living in did not. I would have liked to have seen more depth to Merlin’s childhood and learnt how he obtained his knowledge.
The story is exciting and cleanly written, the characters well defined. I had no trouble recognising any one of the boys as the story unfolded. The differences between the King Ambrosius and Uther his brother were very well marked. I enjoyed the friction between Merlin and Uther, which at times lightened the scene with brief comedy.
Dee Marie has succeeded in creating a terrific atmosphere of early Britain. I feel sodden by the English rain, sense the awe at Stonehenge, hear the jangle of armour, the clash of steel, and smell the blood of battles. I see the rugged Cornish coast from Tintagel and the loneliness of Bodmin Moor. A good read if ever there was one, and this is just the first book. Well done, Dee, I look forward to the next one
From the moment I saw the strikingly impressive front cover of: Sons of Avalon, Merlin’s Prophecy, the exhilaration of this enchanting tale began.
Dee Marie’s solid grasp of the wondrous medieval time period; Arthurian, is highly evident as she takes us (readers) on a non-stop exciting tale. From the mystifying birth of Merlin, I was drawn into the magic. Dee Marie is successful in combining both early British history and mythical characters, masterfully weaved and brought to life.
Merlin is no ordinary child, and throughout the tale he uncovers his life’s purpose, while coming to terms with his special powers. I experienced the bloodiness of the battlefields, love, and humor infused in this captivating story.
Sons of Avalon is not just a thrilling page turner, it is, a journey which is guaranteed to leave you anxiously awaiting the second book in the series – Absolutely Outstanding!
This was a beautifully written book, about Merlin and how he placed his legacy in Britian. The way the characters were developed and the way the scenery was played out was beautifully done. I have not read any books about this time period and I found that the time that this book takes place to be such a time of turmoil. Everyone is looking for peace but can't find it because of war. I enjoyed this book, I appreciate that the author place a index of people and places in the back of the book, it helped in gaining more insight of who these people were.
Imagine a world filled with magic and mystery, Druids and knights and ancient prophecies. Imagine Merlin, long before he tutored the fabled King Arthur, Merlin as a very young boy. Welcome to Britain. “The earth rumbled as a lightning bolt flashed in the predawn sky splitting a giant oak at the meadow’s edge. An eerie silence followed, broken by a hawk’s cry.“ Thus Merlin is born. An old knight, Arden, and his wife, Enid, find him. The old couple cares for him and raise him. However, Merlin is not just any child. He is watched over by a hawk, he is wise far beyond his years, and he has mysterious gifts- including that of prophecy. The same mysterious gifts that Merlin is blessed with are curses as well. They make him sought after by the most powerful king of the realm, the High King Vortigern. This places Merlin’s entire family at risk, and puts him specifically in grave danger, Vortigern has murdered the rightful king and his eldest son and placed himself in his stead. However, he made the mistake of leaving the other sons alive. Now Uther and Ambrosius, the rightful heirs to the throne, have gathered armies to reclaim their kingdom. One of them will be the father of Arthur. But which? Merlin is driven to the shores of beautiful Avalon, where he uncovers many truths about himself. He also swears to protect the future of Britain at any cost. As time passes, Merlin enhances his gifts and advises all three of these kings of Britain, creating the sequence of events necessary for the conception of King Arthur. In Sons of Avalon: Merlin’s Prophecy, Dee Marie has created a masterpiece. Her writing style is enthralling and she keeps one hooked throughout the entire book. I especially loved the imagery in the book- I felt myself transported into the book, heard every clop of the horse’s hooves, felt every drop of rain, and smelled the fresh trees. I truly felt as if I was riding with Merlin and his friends and alongside the characters throughout the entire book. Additionally, I found the plot of this book to be fantastic. Many subtle sub-plots are woven into the main one, all timed perfectly, and all riveting. I cannot laud highly enough the virtues of the entire storyline. One of the parts I especially enjoyed was the “Wine Toss Scene,” and certain ceremonies that take place with the Druids. I cannot give these wonderful scenes away, however. When I first heard of this book, to be honest, I thought it would be a simple Arthurian story that I would enjoy as light reading. However, it turned out to be so much more than that. Dee Marie actually researched the history of the time period and incorporated it into the story, which made the plot richer and deeper, and caused more interest, wondering which parts were actually real events. In fact, the characters of Merlin, Ambrosius, and Vortigern were all real people. Secondly, this is the story of Merlin’s early years, a story that I believe has almost never been told. Also, the book is not only from the viewpoint of Merlin. Some passages are from Sir Lot (an interesting, complex, pivotal character) or Uther, for instance. I really found that all of the characters were given as much thought and depth as the main one, which I loved. The novel has great flow and moves swiftly, yet allows one to absorb what has happened. It is highly detailed, but not overly so. It has perfect balance. It is neither a romance story, nor a war story, nor the story of a quest. It is the story of Merlin. Rated six out of five stars for an amazing, entrancing, fascinating read. Recommended for ages 10-11 and up- it was not written as a young adult novel, however, and is perfectly appropriate for adults.
Arthurian legends are usually that, legends of Arthur, but most don’t seem to spend as much time delving into the story of Merlin. Sons of Avalon: Merlin’s Prophecy is an amazing introduction into the magical world of Merlin. Dee Marie beautifully sheds light on the beginnings of the beloved, magical, and mysterious Merlin.
Set in a post Roman Britain, this recovering nation was still fraught with turmoil and war. The reader is transported to a time long ago with sights, and smells of the era. The scenery unfolds in the mind with each word until you are there with the characters in peace or in battle.
The characters are rich and complex. The mysterious Merlin, Lionel, Lot, Ambrosious, and Uther take us through their journeys and struggles. Our characters, sometimes misunderstood, seem to make the wrong choices until the bigger picture is revealed with a life lesson intertwined. The difficulties and hardship of the time are clear, but not without humor throughout to remind us of the characters’ youthfulness and humanity. We watch Merlin grow from infancy and become the leader and prophet he is meant to become.
Merlin’s Prophecy isn’t only filled with beautifully written folklore, there are lessons woven throughout that relate to readers of all ages. Just because the characters lived long ago doesn’t mean that they weren’t facing challenges we can relate to. My favorite moment from the story comes from a scene when Merlin was speaking to Ambrosious. This conversation came to me at a time when I needed it: “ …’Peace or discontentment comes from within. Man may not rule his destiny, but he does rule his soul. Your reaction to life comes from within you, not from the world around you.’” (Sons of Avalon: Merlin’s Prophecy, p.199)
Dee Marie’s novel is not just for fans of Arthurian legends, but for anyone who enjoys good literature. Personally, Merlin’s Prophecy has been a great introduction into a genre and world I had previously not visited. I hold a new respect and interest in Merlin, and plan to look into reading other Arthurian tales. I anxiously await her sequel to Merlin’s Prophecy.
Synopsis: In an unusual twist on Arthurian-type legends, Merlin's Prophecy takes the reader on an adventurous journey, following a young Merlin on his quest to bring about the events that would shape ancient Britain and provide salvation for that war-torn land.
What I liked: Ooo, the historical detail was so breathtaking. I could visualize everything as it happened: Merlin's discovery as an infant, his ever-present hawk, bloody battles, drenching downpours, druidic practices, and the child prophet forced to grow into a man before his time, enduring heartache and strife no child should ever experience. Merlin's story was told in such a way that I was eager to learn more, learn about this "historical" figure as a child and discover just how pivotal a role he played in the eventual arrival of King Arthur. WARNING: This book made me cry more than once. Just FYI. I also loved the inclusion of a glossary of sorts, listing the people and places encountered in this adventurous tale. I'm thrilled this book is the first and we get to experience this world all over again just as soon as Ms Marie gets the sequel finished...hint, hint. :o)
What I didn't like: I hate this part of the review. I loved the book, the storyline, the characters. I already mentioned my anticipation for the sequel. However, there were times when I felt a little disappointed when learning about one character only to find myself suddenly following a different character when my curiosity with the first was not yet satisfied. This probably says more about my impatience as a reader than Ms Marie's abilities as an author...
Overall: 4.7 stars, definitely a keeper to be re-read and enjoyed. I recommend this book to fans of Arthurian legends and anyone who enjoys a good historical novel.
I have always been enamored with the Arthurian legends.
I have read many of the books that have been published on the subject. The one thing that I have a problem with is that the legend changes according to each historian/author, and I have problems keeping the characters straight. There are lots of characters and the names are sometimes very much alike. Those are the problems - but the greatest thing is that the stories are fascinating and a lot of fun.
This rendition of the story of Merlin is great. It has a lot of charm and is written in a way most of us can understand.
Merlin is a fairy child. His mother is the Lady of the Lake. She left him as a babe in the woods and he was adopted by an elderly couple. At the age of six, he is violently taken from this couple and is sent by his mother to be the advisor to the current King and the future King of Britain.
Britain is being invaded by the Saxons and it is a brutal period in history. Merlin is gifted with many powers - he can heal, see visions, and predict the future. He advises King Ambrosious and his brother, Uther.
MERLIN'S PROPHECY is filled with intrigue, battles, romance, and fun. I can't wait to read the next installment in the SONS OF AVALON series.
I love to read books about this era, but I don't like to read about bloody battles and battle strategies. It just doesn't interest me, but Dee Marie describes battles in a way that I can understand them and although I still didn't like to read about them, they didn't bother me as much as in many other books. The story is well-written and has some interesting characters that go through changes and mature. For me it's a story about revenge, loyalty, mystery and love.
One of my favorite characters is Lot who is a wonderful soldier, it's unknown if he can be trusted or not, but he's a hero without any doubt and feels completely happy and comfortable in his own skin. He teaches Merlin an interesting lesson about the consequences of his visions and giving advice to the King.
Who is responsible for all the bloodshed? The one who gives the orders or the one who executes the orders. Are all the casualties in the name of freedom worth it? I would never like to be in Merlin's shoes.
I really enjoyed this book. Quick, easy read with characters that were easy to relate to (although I kept imagining that they were older, hard to imagine good knights/murderous knights at tender ages). I found Merlin's character to be a good one, though Lionel's was the most compelling to me and of course I was in love with Sir Lot as I tend to like the schemy sort. Uther was an arse for most of it and made me rather grumpy. It was interesting to note the changes of a post-Roman Londinium as well as how many customs were still present/changing.
I LOVED this book!! Dee Marie did an amazing job spinning the tale of Merlin's life! It was SO captivating, I couldn't put the book down!
For some reason I've always pictured Merlin as being this old wizard with a long gray/white beard/hair who always goes around in long brightly colored robes, so it was neat reading about him as a five year old kid, and then seeing him age and read about his life as a pre-teen/teen.
This is a great book, which is fast paced and does a very good job of holding the readers attention.
The story of Merlin and Arthur is an old one that this book breaths new life into. In the book, set from Merlin's birth to the conception of Arthur, we find out who Merlin is, where he came from, and how all the traumatic events in his early life lead him to his one true goal - the protection of Britain.
Sons of Avalon: Merlin's Prophecy brilliantly sets the stage for what is to come.
This is a great book. I couldn't put it down. Also, knowing that Dee Marie spent so much time doing historical research on the legend as well as spending time in Merlin's areas of England and the environ added to my love of the book.
I highly recommend this book as an exciting story and a very well written book
I really enjoyed learning about Merlin's birth and childhood, which is something that was sorely missing from other books dealing with Merlin.
The characters were complex, yet understandable. I felt, in many ways, as though I could relate to each character on some level. For me, that's an important part of any story.
Lords, ladies, and beasts are the entertaining characters in Dee Marie's "Sons of Avalon". The historical nature of the novel is intreiging. You will get familiar with the characters and grow to care for them. You will be drawn into the battles and adventures of Merlin. Her attention to historical details transports the reader to another time. I thoroughly enjoyed the read.
I liked this book a lot. . . I would have given it 4 stars but I think it was just a bit to serious and a little to old for me. I love how Dee started her series with a whole book on Merlin's childhood! I've never read much about Merlin, just Arthur. ANYWAY, it was amazing, Dee, and I can't wait for the next one!
An engaging story of the wizard Merlin as a youth, struggling to unite a nascent British nation against Saxon invaders. Character-driven with compelling descriptions of early British culture and religion, it's a welcome addition to the bookshelf of readers who love the Arthurian tales, Druids or early medieval society.
Couldn't put it down! Extremely well written tale of Merlin's birth, childhood and growth into manhood. Historically accurate. Suspenseful and humorous. One of THE best books I've read in a very long time. I WANT MORE!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and very much looking forward to the next. The character details are brilliant and you really get into the mind of Merlin as you read it. Highly recommended! You can read my full review at Renderosity: http://www.renderosity.com/news.php?v...
This book was fascinating!!! I have read it 5 times. Every time I read it I learn something new, or remember something different. I could see every image played out. This book will translate very easily to film. I can't wait for the next one!
My first thought was that I had never considered Merlin had ever been a child. I suppose I imagined him popping out from somewhere with his wand and pointed hat, already a man. Was I ever wrong. This is a very good book and the only question I have is: When is the next one coming out? I want it.
This book is by Dee Marie, one of my very good friends. It is really good. I would recommend it to anyone. It is exciting and fun!! One of my fav. characters is Lot.
This was a terrific book, full of many wonderful action and dramatic scenes. It introduced me to a part of the King Arthur legend I had never known about.
