Henry Roberts is a serial killer. He has a type — young, blonde, attractive women. He is three years into a life sentence.
Two of his victims were never found.
Now, Henry Roberts is dying. He wants to make a deal. Move him to a secure unit by the sea and he will tell the police where the other victims’ remains are.
The offer is accepted and Detective George Elms travels to the force who led the original investigation. He is the messenger. He finds a police force and a community still shattered. As he reviews the old case notes he also learns something else. Henry Roberts didn’t work alone.
A woman goes missing. She fits the profile of the other victims. The circumstances of her disappearance do too — she never made it from her commuter train to her car.
Then a second woman goes missing. George is convinced they are linked. Henry Roberts told him on his prison visit that two is better because: you can make the other one watch.
Time running out for George. He is convinced that Henry Roberts knows who he should be chasing, but will he help before he takes his last breath? Or the women take theirs?

This book is part of the Detective George Elms series but it can be read as a standalone. The pace of this story seems to get quicker the further you get into the book. The twisted plot will keep you turning the pages.George is a very likeable character. This book has a chilling, dark, gripping storyline took my breath away at times with the unexpected twists. Go on, if you haven't already, be a devil and start at the beginning of this series. They're great!!
I would like to thank Joffe Books and the author Charlie Gallagher for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Detective George Elms is back, with one of his hardest cases ever. He's facing a serial killer, the likes that no one has ever seen before. Henry Roberts is known as The Bull. He has killed relentlessly, causing as much pain as possible to his victims ...and their families.
Roberts is dying of cancer and wants to make a deal. Elms is definitely not on board, but the higher ups don't want to hear anything about it. They've accepted his offer of giving the police the location of his last 2 victims in return for his transfer to a state of the art medical center that looks out over the sea.
Elms is selected to not only interview this monster, but to also get in touch with the detectives who originally arrested Roberts.
Much to his surprise, he learns that Roberts may not have been working alone. And now there are two more missing women.
This is an exceptionally well written thriller with unforgettable characters. Surprises at every turn and an amazing ending. Action-packed and Fast Paced. Although this is the latest in a series, I always recommend starting at the very beginning.
Many thanks to the author / Joffe Books / Books n All / Jill Burkinshaw for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Having read Charlie Gallagher’s Langthorne series, I couldn’t wait to read his new book and thank you to netgalley for a copy in exchange for a review.
From the first page you are instantly drawn into this action packed suspense thriller!!
Serial killer Henry Roberts is a dark and evil character that gave me chills reading about him, he shows no remorse for his victims, saying that he set them free and that he is God’s disciple.
Inspector George Elms has the unenviable task of visiting Henry in prison. Henry is dying and wants to be moved to a prison with a sea view, which he has paid to be built and staffed himself and in return he will tell George where 2 of his victims are. Poor George doesn’t agree with this but has to go along with it as the powers that be have the final say.
George is a very strong, likeable character, passionate about his job and desperate to find out the truth. I have to admit to a crush on George and if he turned up at my door with a packet of Jammy Dodgers I wouldn’t need persuading to let him in!!!
A must read book with an excellent ending that doesn’t disappoint.
Detective Inspector George Elms knew that he should have said no,he should have said that he was busy, that he had paperwork to do,that he was taking his daughter to the park or the zoo.He should have just put his foot down and refused to go but Major John Whittaker made it sound like a simple task.Just go to the prison, get serial killer Henry Roberts to sign a piece of paper and then leave, job done, end of story. But George should have known that nothing involving John Whittaker ever goes as planned. Henry Roberts decides that George is going to be the first police officer that he is going to communicate with since his arrest more than three years ago.George swiftly finds himself over two hundred miles from home, caught up in a complex, frustrating case involving missing girls, torture devices and a evil puppet master who seems to be able to control George's every more as easily as a puppeteer controls a puppet on a string.
Yay,George is back, doing what George does best, sticking his size tens in where they are not wanted and generally rubbing people up the wrong way. This time he finds himself staying in a rental cottage in the small English village of Symonds Yat on the Welsh border.A gorgeous, tranquil sounding place that lay among steep, dramatic hills and had the river Wye running through the middle. It also happened to be the village where Henry Roberts grew up and the home of one of the latest missing girls.George unsurprisingly soon finds himself butting heads with DI Emma Rowe who was in charge of the original investigation into Henry Roberts crimes.Emma isn't interested in George's theories that the latest missing girl is all part of a bigger plan.Emma got on my nerves and I could easily understand George's feelings of frustration and anger over her attitude and stubbornness.Fortunately George could always rely on Emily Ryker`s help with the investigation as well her usual sarcasm and witty comments.Unfortunately we found out quite early in the story who had abducted the girls and there was chapters voiced by this person interspersed throughout the story as well as a few chapters voiced by the missing girl from Symonds Yat.The person who has abducted the girls is a twisted, evil psychopath but why have they been abducted and will George be able to find them before time runs out?
In stark contrast to the stunning settings where some of the scenes are set,the descriptions of the crimes that Henry Roberts was convicted for are dark, disturbing and spine chilling. This is a gripping, well written thriller that holds the readers attention throughout and has a surprising, twist ending.Sadly this is the last George Elms thriller. Goodbye George,I'm going to miss you.
Many thanks to Joffe Books and Jill Burkinshaw for the opportunity to read and review this book and take part in the blog tour
Her Last Breath is a book in the Detective George Elms series but easily reads as a stand alone. Even though this is only the second book I have read the series, what I do know is that George is a very lovable character. You can see why these books are a hit with readers. Not just because of the gripping story line but also because of a main protagonist that readers will really get behind.
If I were to do book crushes, George would definitely be one of them. I love his character. He is a really genuine guy that is trying to do his best. I could feel his frustrations at being sent on another case that involves someone giving Hannibal Lecture a run for his money!
Henry Roberts, as soon as we are introduced to him, sent shivers down my spine. This man is pure evil and you can feel that darkness pouring out of the pages. I knew from that point that his book was going to be very dark and extremely engrossing and it was.
When more young women go missing, it becomes a race against time in solving the case. The pace of the story really increases and I couldn't put the book down until I knew how it was all going to end. There were certainly some unexpected surprises in store making it an absolute page turner of a read.
Her Last Breath was a gripping and chilling read with a baddie that I hope doesn't give me nightmares. A tense, dark and disturbing read. If you haven't read any books in this series yet, then I highly recommend you doing so.
My thanks to Jill Burkinshaw and Joffe Books for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
This is a stand-alone book featuring the loveable George Elms.
I have read several George Elms books and the character has grown on me until he is an addiction and I need to read about him on a regular basis so I really hope this is not the last I hear of him.
Once again George is handed the crap nobody else wants. What is unusual this time, however, is that a terminally ill serial killer, of young women, who was locked up a few years ago wants to give up the location of 2 missing bodies. George had nothing to do with this case so he has no idea why he should be 'the chosen one'.
He sets off to Symonds Yat a remote village in the middle of beautiful countryside that has known horrors that nobody could imagine. The trauma of the case has had long term effects on the team that investigated and the lead detective resigned and lost himself in a bottle. George is not welcomed and the general opinion is that he has turned up with a big tub of salt to pour in open wounds and the secrecy around him being there doesn't help.
George learns that there was a slight hint that Henry was not working alone. Then another girl goes missing.......
This is not a book for the faint hearted the murder method is particularly gruesome but for sadistic souls like me that love the adrenaline pumping gore and pain that keep the pages turning this book definitely delivers. It is fast paced despite the problems everyone has finding a way forward.
Then George's biggest fear is realised and the everyone is racing against time to find the answers before it is too late.
Once again Charlie Gallagher has delivered a book that keeps me turning page after page and holding my breath willing George on to do what he does best and find the bad guys.
What is different about this book is that Charlie has given George the chance of happiness interwoven into his worse case yet. Will George be back? I certainly hope.
Definitely 5 golden stars from me. Keep 'em coming Charlie.
Her Last Breath is the first book that I have read by Charlie Gallagher but it won’t be my last. I really liked this book. Great story. Characters you can sink your teeth into. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
O.K., so I'm a sick freaking bitch. I kinda liked this book. A lot! Would I have loved this book a week ago? Please, who knows? And so are the days of our lives. This is an author I will be reading again. Seriously, I need more Charlie Gallagher in my life...or on my kindle! Again, as I always forget, my thanks to Netgalley, and the publishers for the arc. Seriously dudes, of course I forget, but I'm not here to remember the free galleys, I'm here for the stories. Just saying...
The first part was a little slow, but the story tempo continued to build. The last third of the book was gripping, full of tension and suspense. The characters of both police and evildoers was good, as was the stressors that can undermine police, victims and their respective families.
The ending was not as clear as I would have liked and seemed anticlimactic. But in policing, as in life, there is no accounting for the actions of some. People can be unpredictable. A solid crime thriller. From a historic point of view, the bronze bull was a real torture & execution device used by Phalaris of 6th Century BC Sicily. When Phalaris was overthrown & killed, the people threw the metal bull into the sea.
I would read Charlie Gallagher again. Four and-a-half stars.
I never write reviews.....but this book was so ludicrous I felt I had to. I can’t believe all the people who rated it positively. The plot was ridiculous, loads of loose ends and totally unbelievable. Stupid ending, it wasn’t a twist it was a really stupid ending, an insult to the reader. Cack for want of a better word.
George Elms has an unwelcome task to perform. He is to go to a prison to speak with Henry Roberts, a notoriously vicious serial killer. Roberts is dying and wants to move to a secure prison that he is building on the coast to see the sea before he passes away. He is very wealthy and will fund the cost of the building, guards and hospital staff himself. George is against this idea of course. But the hierarchies of the police want it to happen. They are getting harassed by Roberts’ attorneys and will get the building and a large donation for free if they go through with Roberts’ plan.
George travels to visit the families and others who were involved with Roberts. These are families and police officers torn apart by memories and heartache.
Then a woman disappears, and then another. George believes that Roberts knows who is doing the new killings. He wants him to help catch the person.
This is another exciting police drama written by a serving police officer. It is filled with emotion and drama. Charlie Gallagher is a unique talent and I am very glad he joined the group of people who write police procedurals and mysteries. Well written and plotted, this is a fine addition to the George Elm series of novels.
I want to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this great book for me to read, enjoy and review.
I could tell very early on that this was not going to be a "run of the mill" thriller. The plot elements that drive this novel are anything but formulaic and the characters are relatable and likable (except for Henry Roberts, obviously, who evokes the sensation of being surrounded by pure evil). George is not another grizzled cop with an axe to grind. Emma is not the weaker, grating partner. It is clear the author gave due diligence to giving the readers everything they would need to like these characters, to root for them, and to follow them on an intense, captivating roller coaster of a journey. The story was well thought-out and exciting, fast-paced and full of just the right kind of emotion and suspense.
Another book in the George Elms series but it can be read as a stand alone. I have been waiting for this one to be published and it is oh-so-worth the wait. I have read and enjoyed a number of Charlie Gallagher's books, but this one has raised the bar yet again. I was intrigued by the 'blurb' but once I started to read it I couldn't stop. George has been sent to speak to a killer housed in Belmarsh Prison. Henry Roberts is dying from cancer and wants to spend his last days in a purpose-built ( with his own money) cell at the seaside. In return for this, he will give the location of the remains of his last two victims. What George doesn't know is that all of his victims were killed in a particularly brutal way, so brutal that the detectives who investigated at the time were all scarred for life by the experience. George soon understands why but he also quickly realises that Roberts didn't work alone. When two more girls go missing who fit his 'type' - young, blonde, and beautiful - George has his work cut out trying to solve the mystery. This is a very dark tale which leaves you with such a deep sadness over the depths to which humanity can sink but it is enlivened by George's journey back into the light in his personal relationships. I love George as a character and this is one of the few series where learning about the main detective isn't an irritating sideline. I genuinely want him to be happy. This book is writing gold. It deserves not only 5 stars but also a gold medal.
Her last Breath- Charlie Gallagher- Joffe- July 24th 5* Henry Roberts is serving life for the killing of several girls, two of whom have never been found. He trades for where their remains are. Detective George Elms has been asked to go out of his area to look at where the killings took place and meet with the murderer. He then discovers that Henry didn’t do these horrendous crimes on his own. When a woman goes missing who almost fits the descriptions of the previous victims the past has to be revisited. A book that grabs you from the start and one that deals with the past fist. Many crime books begin with the crime or murder, this one is slightly different. Not only visiting the past but giving us a background to the main characters and making them believable. A captivating read that made me want to read faster as I was reaching the conclusion . I liked George and Emma- they came to life on the pages and gave the book that extra “je ne sais quoi” . Characters with a little humour, a lot of tenacity and a determination to see the job through- and ones you would want on your side. There is a wonderful.. I won’t spoil it, other than to say prepare for the unexpected. A brilliantly written book with a clever plot. I very much look forward to the next one. Once again I thoroughly enjoyed this authors book, it is very well written, and I really warm to George and “the Major”.
This time he gets involved with another forces criminal, namely Henry Roberts, a serial killer, who is dying from cancer, and wants to spend his last days overlooking the sea in return for him telling George where the last two victims bodies are.
Meanwhile another girl goes missing, but Henry is locked up, in a secure unit, and this means he’s not working alone.
As the story progresses it, without spoiling it for other readers, all is not what you think. There’s a massive twist at the end, and I think it’s quite sad too.
I would just add, that at the beginning when readers are finding out about the move for Henry, it wouldn’t surprise me, if these sort of shenanigans went on with the Home Office!!!
My thanks to the author, and Joffe Publishers for the ARC. I hope this isn’t the end of George, we’ve only had two books!!
I would like to thank Joffe Books and the Netgalley website for this partnership.
I've been wanting to read it for a long time, that's it. I was immediately attracted by the blanket and we see a young woman from behind who seems to be looking towards the forest.
It all began when serial killer Henry Roberts was sentenced to life imprisonment, his type of wife: young and attractive blondes. He is about to die, he wants to be moved to the sea and tell the police where the remains of the bodies he hid are. Except that the police will find out that he was not doing this alone, and one day a woman disappears and then a second one. Time is running out for the police.
A thriller that I found captivating, full of suspense and twists and turns. I immediately became hooked on the story. Looking forward to reading another book by this author.
A lifer makes a deal, to tell all, before dying. Something is wrong, when bodies are turning up. Did he have someone else involved, could Detective George get answers. The set up, that the killer wanted, he had old money, lots of it to do what he wanted. How can one find out what the truth was, will George find out. Everyone says that the Killer is ruthless, was George just a pawn, in his devious scheme. A twisted plot, that has a killer’s evil plot to get what he wants. Another twisted thriller by author that will capture people from the beginning. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
I was kind of interested at the beginning but it seem to be telling me things rather than actually happening, I didn’t really think There was a huge plot twist, and maybe because we know it’s coming you are probably expecting something better.
I didn’t enjoy the writing style and I didn’t like any of the characters. There seems to be a lot of loose ends and the fact that the author had to explain the ending just makes it even worse, like a bad indie cop film.
There were few entertaining actions bits, that’s why I gave it 2 stars rather than 1.
Thank you Netgally for the Proof copy of the book in exchange for my review
Thankyou to NetGalley, Joffe Books and the author, Charlie Gallagher, for the opportunity to read a digital copy of Her Last Breath in exchange for an honest and unbiased opinion. I struggled to finish this book unfortunately. I found the storyline on the slow side and could not connect with the characters. Not a book for me.
This book has a dark, chilling storyline that grips you like a vice and is not for the faint hearted. Extremely well written it takes you on a roller coaster ride, tugging at your emotions and not letting go until the very end. I love Charlie Gallagher, a master of his class.
The best book of the series by far! I’m hoping this isn’t the last outing for George... this is the first in the series where I haven’t been saying “Awww, poor George”!
Thanks to Joffe Books for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review
At the point the serial killer is being allowed to build his own prison wing to die in the book became beyond stupid. Revealing two bodies may get you a transfer but nothing more no matter how rich you are!
I was gripped from first page, really like the character Detective George Elms. So many unexpected twists, kepted me wanting to know how it ended and was not disappointed. FANASTIC THRILLER!. GOT TO READ MORE BY CHARLIE GALLAGER.
Absolutely brilliant. What a twist at the end. Not usually into thrillers, but I couldn’t put this down. Will definitely be reading Charles Gallagher in the future. Read it you will not be disappointed.
