The Breach

Rate this book
A Category 4 hurricane punched a quarter mile hole in Fire Island, exposing the Great South Bay to the ferocity of the Atlantic Ocean, and the current pulled something terrible through the new breach. A monstrosity of the past mixed with the present has been disturbed and it’s found its way into the sheltered waters of Long Island’s southern sea. Nate Tanner lives in Stones Throw, Long Island. A disgraced SCPD detective lieutenant put out to pasture in the marine division because of his Navy background and experience with aquatic crime scenes, Tanner is assigned to hunt the creeper in the bay. But he and his team soon discover they’re the ones being hunted.

I'm gonna applaud this book because it's not the run of the mill creature-feature. There were quite a few curves in the plot that I didn't see coming. Yes, its about a giant (seriously) sea scorpion- claws and stinger! It is also about a stubborn yet plucky, yet shamed, yet extremely fit hero named Nate.
Now here is where even I was like "Whoa, really???" Why? Because there are certain times when the situation calls for the Big Guns and yet Nate and crew rush into the breach (bad pun?) to do battle with a creature that has a carapace which even .50 caliber bullets can't pierce, which possesses claws that snap many a person into bits and a giant stinger tail.

I get it. The hero is supposed to be larger than life, but in situations where the Navy is on scene with serious weaponry, I certainly wouldn't be Capn' Ahab. His bravado (not sure if that's the right word), um his vengeance is the cause of many deaths and that kinda bummed me out while reading the book. Still, it was a very enjoyable work!

Tanner and Randy find themselves on the hunt for a sea monster that seems to have been dredged up after a passing hurricane. It's a giant scorpion that seems to be impervious to most weapons, and oddly despite previously existing only deep under water, it can breathe air and move about on swampy land. The casualty list is high and the guys finally beat the creature. I watch a lot of movies that tell this sort of tale so guessing what would happen next was probably to be expected, as was the final punchline. But it's an entertaining read.

Not bad...

but not great either. It was a so-so read. The characters were never developed well. The protagonist was a rude bugger, myopic, a drunk, and was obsessed. He wasn’t really something worth investing yourself in until, maybe, the last chapter.

It was edited well, it flowed decently, and I finished it. I’ve read (much) worse. The author has potential.

It was a book, not a very imaginative or well written book. It had all the common tropes for a mystery novel/ strike that: a Mystery Science Theater 3000 movie: a giant animal from the depths, a lovable ugly dog, a loner hero who dislikes authority and is misunderstood, a bungle-headed military and lots of high tech weaponry. Not on my recommended list.

A fun "monster" movie like read. Not too much else going on other than chasing down the big crab. Characters were ok, not great, but then again the big draw is the monster after all. A shorter book so it did not take a lot of time to read and it did get me looking at other books by this author.

As far as these b-grade stories go this was pretty good...i love a good monster movie and one where the monster isn't a shark or squid is a novel idea. The end leaves room for a second book which i eagerly await :)

Good tale that needs a few adjustments

Calling the army corps of engineers the "core" could be the funniest spelling error ever. Not a bad monster on the loose tale.

Look at the cover. This is a B Horror movie in book form. It was fun, silly, slightly outrageous; it rolled and the pacing was good. Not the best written but entertaining.
