When I saw that my fave Tamsen Parker had a short story in this collection, I jumped on it! She is always apart of the best compilations and anthologies, so this book became a must read for me. And of course, this book did not let down! There are stories for every erotica lover (whether you love the crazy hot and heavy, or the sensual and romance).

The best part about this collection is that there are so many varieties of stories. Not only does this introduce the reader to each author's work, but it's just enough to get your mouth watering for more. When I read anthologies like these, I love picking out new authors to follow. You can test the waters with each little story to see the true potential of each author to open up your bookshelf for a few more readers.

I definitely had my faves from the collection - Tamsen Parker, Alessandra Torre and Mica Kennedy to name a few - but they were all fantastic! I think this is the best way to check out some new authors without committing to 12+ 300 page novels.

Each story had a few chapters to sink the reader's teeth into, and all of them were spicy! The diverse types of stories is also a nice touch - BDSM, existing couples, new couples, experimenting, kinks and more! It dabbles in each "category" of erotica to spice up the reader's life.

Overall, I think this is an excellent collection. There's a little bit of erotica for every type of reader and it is truly the best way to find a new author (or two!) to add to your collection.

Five out of five stars!

I received an ARC of this book from the editor.

Best Women's Erotica of the Year, Volume 4 is part of a series of short-story collections released every year. A multitude of stories were submitted for consideration by a variety of authors and 20 made the cut. Writer and editor, Rachel Kramer Bussel has organized a wide range of erotic romance pieces into this anthology that are sure to speak to a variety of readers. According to the book's introduction, this is the first time that an official theme has been showcased in this series. The theme is “Outsiders and Risk”. Rachel Kramer Bussel writes that current events in the world make these 2 elements incredibly relevant. She wanted characters who may be considered as “outsiders” to be celebrated in this anthology instead of ostracized. The characters in this collection are trying things that are new to them and taking control of their own sexuality: embracing sexual fluidity, exploring kinks and fetishes, taking full advantage of unexpected opportunities. They are taking risks despite the fear, pushing past boundaries set by themselves and others, confronting the unfamiliar and finding self-acceptance, trust and healing in the process. Written by women, about women, and for women, this book has something to satisfy everyone. A few of the pieces were a bit over the top for me personally but I enjoyed much of the book. My favorites might not be your favorites, but the diverse range is the beauty of this collection. Highly erotic with plenty of substance. Check it out.

4 Quickie

this is a collection of very quick 1-2 chapters and the dirty bits. Think of this like little naughty scenes by a ton of authors so you can see if you want to pick up a full length novel from one of them. I walked into this knowing one author and left with a ton to look into. The scenes are all types of scenes from voyeur to BDSM to normal coupling and more. there is a naughty story for everyone in this . yummm

A Sexy and Hot collaboration from all the authors in this anthology. I especially loved Tamara Lush's Story. It was full of heat and passion. What I really loved and enjoyed that is was about a woman who is older looking to experiment.

All the authors did a fabulous job! Very enjoyable!

This was a fun way to spend an afternoon. I made myself a bubble bath and poured a glass of wine. It was a great way to enjoy this kind of anthology.

I don't always pick these kind of novels up, I will admit that it can feel naughty to purchase a novel with Erotica in the title, but I am a grown up and damn it, it sure can be fun! also, I usually don't like my stories to be so short, because to is difficult to get a feel for the characters that quickly. However, with erotica, you aren't really in it for character development.

My favorite was Take the Shot by Mica Kennedy. it was a thrill and I like the characters even in such a short story. It gave me some tingly feelings and I just flew threw it.

I am so glad I was willing to give this a read and I think you will be too if you give it a go.

Best Woman’s Erotica of the Year Volume 4 is the first in this series that I have read. I specifically wanted to read Alessandra Torre’s The Dressing Room. It was quick, sexy and steamy and I loved it.

I am now working my way through the other short reads and am loving them as well!

Happy reading!

Best Women's Erotica volume 4 is a steamy collection of short stories by a variety of authors, featuring diverse characters and pairings, including LGBTQ and multi-partner tales. The theme of this collection is Outsiders and Risk Taking, and each author has brought their own imagination into the mix on what this means to them and how to convey it in a short writing span. These are not romances, though several of the works have a happy for now type ending signalling the partnership may become longer term. There are twenty stories in total and not every story will appeal to every taste, but there are sure to be some that strike your fancy! Here's a brief look at some of the ones I enjoyed.

Take the Shot by Mica Kennedy

'The fairy queen as Dominatrix, her trickster king tamed, in her thrall. It's hot as hell.'
A sexy BDSM photo shoot with a dirty Midsummer's Night's Dream scenario is the backdrop for this short story. Nina is a forty something professor doing a favor for her photographer sister. She gets to revel in her sexy side as a buxom woodland nymph though she initially is discomfited to discover that her co-model is none other than her mid-twenties teaching assistant Josh. When she finds out Josh is transferring out of her department it eases her conscience and lets her let loose. She'd always been attracted to him, and the feeling is mutual. Following the shoot they indulge in a passionate encounter and make the decision to explore something more. I loved seeing Nina get out of her comfort zone and be reminded that not every man wants a model thin waif. Josh thinks she's gorgeous just as she is, whether enhanced by makeup and sexy costumes or just being herself. It's a reminder that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Oh Captain, My Captain! By Calliope Bloom

Fancy a Halloween party? This one turns out to be the X-rated kind when Angie picks up her friend Sophia and Sophia's boyfriend Kai for a night out that lets her explore some of her more kinky fantasies. Angie is bi-sexual and she and Sophia have been friends since college, but she'd never admitted her attraction for fear of losing Sophia's friendship. On the way home from their first party they stop at a huge yacht that's hosting a party of its own and sneak on board. They find an empty stateroom and when Sophia asks if there is something Angie wants to do but has been too scared to ask for, Angie finally gets up the nerve to tell her.
“Okay,” I said and took a deep breath. “I would want to kiss you.”
From there it comes out that Sophia and Kai have an open relationship and they are game for some fun. Sexy times are in order, and when the captain of the boat discovers them, she joins in for some extra BDSM adventures. Ahoy captain! Their threesome becomes a foursome and everyone leaves for home satisfied. It's a fun, enjoyable and super steamy read!

The Pick-me-up by Suleikha Snyder

For Aleja, a margarita at The Hanged Man at the end of a long, lousy day is supposed to be the nightcap but regular bar patron Conn with his ginger hair and Irish accent is capturing her attention more than usual. In fact, this night she notices more about him, specifically his thoughtfulness in a couple of situations where she'd have expected more of his normal brash obnoxiousness. Then a verbal game of one-up-man-ship leads to an alley encounter and more.
'He tasted like drunkenness and impulse. She arched up on her toes to match it with relative sobriety and not-so relative poor judgment.'
I loved this one! Aleja and Conn give to each other as good as they get and they are well matched both in and out of the bedroom. The story ends with the likelihood that it's just the start for this couple.

Belonging by Tamsen Parker

Exploring a kink club for the first time, Glory is nervous but determined. Her fantasies of being on her knees for someone, but that someone respecting and caring for her in return are ones she's finally drummed up the courage to do something about. And lucky for her, Constance is there to set her at ease and give her what she asks for.
'She's right here, offering this thing to me, or maybe opening a door, gesturing for me to come inside. I want to cross the threshold, see if I could belong here too.'
If you've read any of the author's Compass series, you'll have seen mention of Glory and Constance, and this is their origin story. They are a longtime committed Domme/sub couple in the series, and I really enjoyed reading their first meeting and how Glory discovers that yes, this is what she's been looking for.

Words with Benefits by Tamara Lush

For fifty two year old divorced professor Jennifer, meeting men in the world of online dating has so far been a dud, until she tries the 'Words with Benefit's app. When a mutual acquaintance, a professor at her university in a different department and of a similar age pings her on the app, it's the start of some fun games, and a date in the real world. What starts out as drinks leads to a night on Gabriel's boat.
Jennifer takes an interest in the ropes he has, and his proficiency with knots, to which Gabriel says:
'I've never used it for non-nautical things.” His voice was rough, with undertones of dark desire. “But I'd be interested in experimenting.”
And so they discover a mutual interest in bondage kink and a satisfying sexual encounter is likely to lead to more. I really enjoyed this one, with two adults having been in previous relationships willing to take the risk of jumping back into the dating pool and finding they've made the right choice.

Essential Qualities by Alyssa Cole

An interesting future awaits if Alyssa Cole's story is any indication of what will come next in our search for the perfect companion.
'What does it mean that I was born of a human mother and father and that he was designed to my own specifications, down to his golden brown skin and tight black curls?'
In this story scientist Annika has created the perfect man for her, a humanoid robot Ian indistinguishable from a human on the street. Society is undecided on his existence, with protests mingling with requests for her to clone someone's own loved ones. I love this story for posing some interesting ethical questions while showing what it would be like to have someone attuned to our every need.

The latest volume of Cleis's Best Women's Erotica of the Year series is big and bold and immensely satisfying. This collection is as diverse as it is exciting - familiar and new, kinky and sweet, fierce and tender - and filled with women from across the spectrum of life's experiences. It's a good thing the book is long, because each story leaves you hungry for more.

There's a lot of f/f mixed in with the m/f and groups. *cheers*

The theme is "Outsiders," which is a loose guideline and every author interpreted it a bit differently. Here's the line-up (as of my advance copy) and my thoughts on a few of the stories:

Take the Shot, by Mica Kennedy - This is about a teacher who's doing a favor for her photographer sister by posing for some "sensual photos." Her partner for the shoot? Her much-younger teaching assistant. There's that touch of the forbidden, but its mostly a story about a woman of a certain age getting made up for a photo shoot, feeling herself, and then having a sexy man feel her, too. It's just the right balance of sweet and heat. This is the first story I've read by Mica and it was fabulous.

The Dressing Room, by Alessandra Torre - In this story, a woman is in a dressing room, trying on clothes, when she overhears a couple going at it in the stall next door. Soon she's pleasuring herself, joining in from outside. Really hot.

Mark, by Rosie Beth Randall - An m/f D/s relationship with an interesting car ride.

O Captain, My Captain, by Calliope Bloom - Halloween sex party on a boat with an f/f/m grouping and disability rep. Then the ship's female Captain joins in...

The Jump, by Rebecca Chase - Skydiving!

On Display, by Louise Lagris - 2nd person, but it works.

The Pick-Me-Up, by Suleikha Snyder - Starts in a bar, ends in a bed... with a hope for more.

Belonging, by Tamsen Parker - F/f in a kink club.

With Honors, by Sofia Quintero - Single mom with teen kids ends the semester with her sexy professor... with a bang. (Sorry, I had to.)

Breathe, by Patricia Elzie - F/f with tickling.

Aftershock, by Jo Henny Wolf - A woman tries to find her way to her long-distance boyfriend who she was planning to visit in Mexico when an earthquake hits. Sexy flashbacks, plus a happy reunion.

Her Invisible Prison, by Jocelyn Dex - The title refers to agoraphobia, therapy for which is somehow intensely sexy.

The Invitation, by Regina Kammer - Historical! A widow in her fifties and a young artist.

Protest of Passion, by Eliza David - Two people on opposite sides of a protest find common ground.

Words with Benefits, by Tamara Lush - WORDS WITH FRIENDS + TINDER

Essential Qualities, by Alyssa Cole - Sexytimes with a robot

Eight Seconds, by Madeline Moore - Can you tell this takes place at a rodeo?

Seven Sweets and Seven Sours, by Megan Hart - F/f with two women saying goodbye as one leaves the Amish community in which they both live.

Baby Doll, by Sienna Saint-Cyr - A Daddy/Little Girl dynamic

Beautiful Dirty Wonderful, by R.M. Wood - A husband gives his wife the thing she's always wanted: a whole bunch of men at once.

And that's it! This is a diverse collection of erotica (not romance) that will keep you and/or a partner warm all winter.

It's no secret that I am a big fan of Rachel Kramer Bussel. Besides being a superb writer and essayist, the woman knows how to put together an erotic anthology that keeps me turning pages, and Best Women's Erotica of the Year Volume 4 did just that.

Published by Cleis Press, this collection features stories with a common theme: outsiders and risk. In the forward, Ms. Bussel explains why she chose this particular motif:

"The first three volumes of Best Women's Erotica of the Year didn't have official themes, but when I was compiling Volume 4, I decided I wanted stories on the themes of Outsiders and Risk. While on the surface, those may seem incongruous, both spoke to me regarding current events and seemed urgently relevant. At a time when outsiders of many kinds are being ostracized, discriminated against, and shunned, I wanted to explore what being an outsider feels like on a deeply personal level. I always want the authors I publish to turn readers on, but this time, I also want to make you think."

The stories in BWE Volume 4 did indeed make me think, but they also made me smile, made me quiver, and maybe even caused a hot flash or two (or three, but who's counting). While I found something to enjoy in each short, three in particular stood out and quickly became my favorites. In order of appearance:

"Take the Shot" by Mica Kennedy - Delightful from start to finish. Nina is a kick ass heroine, and I was only too happy to see her get what she wanted, (but didn't know she deserved).

"The Dressing Room" by Alessandra Torre - Delicious and naughty, with an ending that made me go back and read the entire story again!

"The Pick-Me-Up" by Suleikha Snyder - Ms. Snyder's expertly rendered characters leapt off the page straight into my brain. Simply breathtaking.

I give this remarkable collection 5 stars. If you're looking for well-written, inspired erotica featuring believable characters and oh-so-hot sex scenes, this is one you don't want to miss.

The theme of this Rachel Kramer Bussel anthology is 'Outsiders who take Risks.' This is a very erotic and and quite enjoyable collection of how taking those risks can often pay off, emotionally and sexually for the risk takers and their recipients.

There is literally something in this collection for just about anybody who reads and has a libido. The stories are all written to a very high standard. I think any reader that starts to read this book will find many things that will delight them.

I hope that an audio book version of this collection will soon follow, hopefully narrated by Rose Caraway. Sometimes the whole is more than the sum of its parts. I have found that the collaboration between Rachel Kramer Bussel and Rose Caraway can create a truly magical mix, one which I hope continues for a long time.

This book was exactly what I hoped for. Lots of (very) short stories that straight to the hot scenes, no frills, no non-sense. And yes, whatever your preferences were, you’ll find them here. The stories were so varied that I had to admit that I kind-of skipped those that were not up in my alley. It’s OK though, there were lots and lots that I liked and loved.

As this was my first Best Women’s Erotica of the Year book, now I’m going to find previous volumes. I’m sure they’re as great as this one.

I was provided a complementary copy by the author / publisher through NetGalley, but this in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions.

A big thank you to Netgalley and to Cleis Press for granting me this reviewing opportunity.

As you can imagine, this book shares several (short and sweet) erotic stories with its readers. Hot, hot, hot!

What worked for me:
-the stories were numerous and sexy. There was something featured for every reader.
-the whole thing felt like a steamy gift. Mama liked.

What did not work for me:
-there were many typos but the version I received did say it was a 'uncorrected proof'

Trigger warnings: I found none

First off kudos to Rachel Kramer Bussel for yet another great collection of stories. I've always loved these (and all the other) anthologies but this one is definitely my favorite. Maybe it's because I haven't read much erotica this year or maybe it was the theme of these stories but I loved them all.
It was the themes.
All the characters seemed so real and relatable because they're stepping out of their comfort zone or away from what is expected of them. And the general idea of going for what you want is simply beautiful.

Going into Best Women’s Erotica of the Year, Volume 4 I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I knew it was a collection of short stories and I knew I had heard of a few of the authors, like Alyssa Cole. I also knew there was an erotic Amish story, which I was really looking forward to for the shock factor alone. To my surprise, I totally enjoyed this book! Each short story was probably only 10-30 pages, at the most, and focused around one erotic scene.

What I really enjoyed about these stories, is no matter how kinky, messy, or erotic they became, they all had an undertone of love and respect. Whether it was love for themselves, or love for their partner(s), or both, the emotion is what made each story romantic. I loved the focus on unique love. All kinks and fetishes were treated with respect and understanding. I don’t want to ruin any of the stories, because half the fun of this book if figuring out what makes the characters or the scene unique.

Overall, this book was hot and interesting. All the stories had their own, individual voice, and I liked some of the scenes more than others, but I really recommend this to anyone interested in something a little different. The stories that aren’t for you are easy to skip over, or you can read through them and know it’s only going to be a few pages and you might learn something new. I can’t wait to explore the works of the many authors I had never heard of, yet immensely enjoyed their writing style.

a free copy of this book was provided by Rachel Kramer Bussel for an honest review

Bussel has really outdone herself with this recent anthology in the BWE series. She put together an amazing collection of stories. The authors all brought their A-game. The stories were both sexy and heartfelt. In the introduction, Bussel states that is volume has a set theme to it. The other volumes didn't. For volume four, she wanted stories about outsiders and risk. I think those themes really spoke to me on a personal level. I think people in general can relate to feeling apart from others. And we all wish we could give in to our deepest, darkest desires and risk it all to make them come true. The order of the stories have a nice flow to them. You get a little risk with the first story "Take the Shot". The book picks up steam with "Belonging" and "With Honors". And finally, it climaxes with "Beautiful Dirty Wonderful", which delivered on all those adjectives. I also enjoyed that there were multiple stories featuring POC and older women. But there are always favorites with anthologies and mine were:

The Dressing Room by Alessandra Torre
The Pick-Me-Up by Suleikha Snyder
Belonging by Tamsen Parker
With Honors by Sofia Quintero
Breathe by Patricia Elzie
Her Invisible Prison by Jocelyn Dex
The Invitation by Regina Kammer
Essential Qualities by Alyssa Cole

This was my first foray into reading the Best Women's Erotica of the Year. I downloaded it to read Alessandra Torre's snippet called The Dressing Room. Then I kept going from there and read the other author's contributions. There is a little bit of everything in here for readers. It kind of felt like being in a sex club where you're walking down a long hallway made of nothing but glass and you get to look into each room along the way and watch different scenes being played out. Some are very intriguing and you want to linger there longer, some you view briefly and keep going. All were steamy and hot and left me wanting much more!

Some of the authors I've read, a lot I have not, but now that I've experienced some of their writing, I want to go find more! And since I didn't discover this anthology until Volume 4, I definitely need to go back and check out the first 3 volumes!

What a wonderful collection of hot, sexy and passionate stories that will set your blood pumping and your pulse racing. Each story has its own unique quality and they range from very vanilla, to BDSM with some voyeurism thrown in too. There is definitely something for everyone and they are great for times when you need something quick to read over lunch; just remember to keep your head down and a clod bottle of water on hand.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy from Cleis Press for my unbiased opinion of the book. This is a collection of erotica at its best! Each story with its own twists and turns. All the stories are hotter than the last. You would have to live under a rock not to have these stories affect you. I read my first version of these stories twenty years ago and this book is just as good if not better than that. It keeps you wanting more!!!

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

I have to say that the title of this anthology pretty much tells you all that you need to know. This book is just full of short steamy scenes that will either float or boat or they will not depending on what happens to work for you. It definitely contains an eclectic mix of scenes that has something for just about anyone and if one does not work for you just skip to the next one which may better suit your tastes. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

I'm not a huge fan of anthologies but I did enjoy the fact that many of the stories depicted older main characters. Some of us that are approaching middle age want to be reminded that our happily ever after could still be out there somewhere.
