Is Your Mind Really Yours?: Break Free from the Shackles of a Programmed Life

Rate this book
The cornerstone of this lively and highly readable book is the idea of operating from the ‘free spirit’ as opposed to the ego. One subsequently experiences growth, freedom, and contentment.

Ajay Sachdeva asserts that life, at its core, is centred on the relationship one has with one’s self—that is, with one’s thoughts and emotions. These in turn influence one’s relationship with one’s ‘external’ world, including families, friends and the workplace. Is Your Mind Really Yours? raises several important questions for the reader to answer, one of the most important of which is: ‘Have we handed over the remote control of our lives to others, whom we allow to determine our thoughts, behaviours and even key decisions?’

This is the first self help book I read in 2018. There are seven sections in this book which talk about discovering your true self, your relationship with yourself, relationship with your circumstances, relationship with your partner, relationship with family, friends and society, relationship with your work & career and the essence of a liberating journey. Each section begins with beautiful quotes pertaining to the subject matter.

First of all I must acknowledge that author has taken great care to stick to uncomplicated language and simple understandable facts. He has refrained from using rigid scientific words which makes it easy to understand the core concepts.

To get to know who you truly are , you may need to reflect on who you are not.

I am not very fond of this (self help) genre , but this book knocked my door when I needed it the most. Is your mind really yours? stimulates the readers to revisit their life’s journey so far. The book doesn’t preach us or teach us anything new but the way the author has described the “programmed life” is something that stays in your head throughout.
The writing is lucid and easy to understand unlike many other self help book who tend to use quite a few words that are hard to even pronounce. The book is divided in seven sections/chapters loosely based on discovering our true self , our relationship with our self , our family and friends , our work etc. The book has various box quotes by eminent philosophers and writers which is what I liked the most in this book. It creates an impact on the reader and strikes a deep chord. Every chapter begins with a quote so you can keep going back to them.

Personally , I would highly recommend this book to the younger generation who quite often face anxiety issues and existential crises.

Know yourself better, know your thoughts and your emotions better.

Overall Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am not really a fan of the non-fiction genre, especially books of self-help and personal development sub-genre. By now, I might have said this every time I post a review of a book of non-fiction genre. The main reason being that most books of these genres tend to give so many tips and plannings which are supposed to make our lives easier.

Is Your Mind Really Yours? is totally a different take. I was expecting the same format as other books of this genre, but this book is more about knowing yourself and finding your true self.

Being able to truly understand oneself is the most important part of self-discovery. To have a better relationship with people, first you need to have a healthy relationship with your own self. Ajay Sachdeva goes on to explain how we are living a programmed life ever since our birth. We tend to pick up habits from our friends and family, we are taught things which we hold as the ultimate truth, we form a list of rights and wrongs in our head. But everything is “programmed” into our minds. What we believe to be true might not be the truth in reality.

It’s the relationship we have with our own selves determines the kind of relationship we form with the “external world”. Our beliefs, our versions of the truth, we tend to judge people on our own belief systems. Is Your Mind Really Yours? is a reflective piece of work which would make readers ponder on what they know and what actually is the truth. The book raises many important questions and is a really good way of questioning ourselves and discovering our true selves.

The narration of the book is really smooth. The flow of the words was smooth too. It never felt as if the author was rushing to the good stuff and never did I feel that he was trying to preach me some ideal ways to connect with my inner self better. Having walked down the path of self-discovery, I could really connect with the words of the author. One really has to reflect on his/her own self to truly understand what the author is truly meaning to say. The book also has some quotes from famous personalities which I really liked.

The cover is good but I felt it could have been a bit better, as in more relatable to the concept behind the book. Nonetheless, I really loved reading this book.

MY FINAL VERDICT
This book would be a good choice if you are having a tough time understanding your true self or if you want to walk down that path of self-discovery.

A thought provoking, unputdownable book I’m glad to have read!

With so many self-help books in the present time, I was hesitant in reading this one. While glancing through it, I could sense something different. I’m glad to have picked it up. The book changed the way I used to look at life.

Break Free from the Shackles of a Programmed Life. These words ‘Programmed Life’ somewhat triggered something in me. The author has touched every aspect of what goes on in any individual’s life in a very profound way. No, the book doesn’t preach us anything. It personally made me realize what was missing and to think out of the box in a very natural way.

It is very easy to read and understand. It is fast paced. The best part about the book is the quotes which we come across in every chapter. I can revisit them, again and again. It’s a masterpiece.

There are so many brilliant quotes in the book that I'm sure to come back to it again. Thanks to the author for covering all aspects of life that one individual goes through.

I read it after someone recommended it to me. Self-help books are usually not my thing. But this one I liked. Considering the kind of "programmed live" we lead these days, I think a lot of people will identify with the book.
