3.5 🌟 This was a nice action packed surprise. Instead of lions and tigers and bears! You've got skinnies and freaks and tropes oh my! (Mummies, zombies, vampires) This action all takes place in what's left of NYC.

While the action was non stop and very suspenseful. I lost a few nails while reading this one. The negatives, and why I rated 3 stars, was due to the lack of character development. All the characters, except perhaps the main, are simply thrust into the story with zero build up. Same with the plot.

There are no relationship dynamics developed. The characters themselves have no depth as a result. If this had been done, I think I could easily see this as a 4, possibly 5 star book. As the characters all have great potential with varied uniqueness.

However, that said, the action was so darn good that I'm interested enough to check out at least one more. Because there was in fact a bear...and a freaking lion too;)

Great Zombie Story!

Mercy Sawed is a loner that has survived for 2 years since the virus took over NYC.

The new city is now a place of survival against tropes that have suddenly seemed more organized on their attacks. They are getting smarter.

There are also others that you need to fear, Groups that have labeled themselves The Angels, The Flyers, and The Preacher. Angels are strong and organized women, that have a hate towards men. Flyers are a group of organized men. The Preacher is the one you really need to look out for. He has the people and resources to take anybody out that isn't part of their religious beliefs.

Mercy Dawes realizes she needs to work with others to help survive because of some serious things that are now coming about.

This is my first book that I've read by Fergal Nally. I found it absolutely intriguing. I couldn't put it down cause it had me on edge of what is going to happen next. I really like the characters in this book. All of them are survivors that are great fights (except for The Preacher that hides behind his guards and doesn't fight).

The book reminded me in a way of the movie "I am Legend". The movie takes place in NYC where it is overrun by vegetation and the undead. The undead in the movie, also can not go in the sun. The biggest difference between this book and the movie is there is so much more things to be afraid of in the book. I

I absolutely loved reading this book and look forward to reading more of Mercy's story.

This is an awesomely action-packed story of a loner, Mercy Dawes, who has survived two years in New York City after its collapse due to a strange infection that has wiped out most of humanity. Most of the city is home to tropes, the infected, plague-ridden New Yorkers who roam the city at night looking to feed on the living. There are the skinnies, the desiccated dead remains of humans who have seemingly vanished. Freaks, former military experiments that combine infected flesh with cybernetic materials, inhabit the underground tunnels. And the city above, in the daylight, is even more deadly, because of the humans.

In NYC proper, the streets are sparsely populated by feuding human clans, who have staked out territory around the city - the Angels, the Preacher's Men, the Flyers. As a loner, Mercy walks a thin line, but it has kept her alive and in one piece - so far. Until one day, shit goes sideways.... As it always does.

I loved this book. It would have been five stars for, especially for the characters and the world building, but for a couple of things.

1. The almost total lack of transitional words, which lead to stilted writing and choppy sentences, many of whom contained comma splices. The grammar hammer in me cringed for the first quarter of the book, and then the alcohol kicked in, and it was all good. (Ha ha - just kidding!) I got used to it in the end, but a good editorial run through would make this book even more awesome.

2. I didn't understand why the everyone seemed to know the technical details of all of the major weapons and ammunition, even though it was two years after the world fell apart, and most of the players were kids and teenagers. They could talk Koch HK53, Heckers, M202, Mossberg 12 gauge shot gons, and Mauser SP66 sniper rifles. The bad guys, however, were called tropes and skinnies and freaks. It didn't make much sense to me. I would have called a gun a gun and a rocket launcher a rocket launcher. Maybe it's just me.

Overall, however, this is an excellent story, and I look forward to reading the next. Because, yes, it does end on a cliffhanger.
