Perfect for anyone starting a plant based journey or even just wanting to add a bit more veggies in your life. The recipes are easy and yummy. It's really foundational recipes, so you can build so much from these. I wished there were more pictures because I love food pics, but it is fabulous either way.

4.5 stars -- This is a really fantastic, beautifully presented cookbook. The recipes are simple, appealing, and I definitely plan on preparing several of them. I like recipes that don't require you to take out a loan to purchase the ingredients, and can be made simply on a work night. I also appreciate that a lot of foods I eat frequently were used....avocado, beans, and greens.

I'm not a huge fan of the title--("Ageless? Tell that to my knees," I thought), but after reading the author's smart, sensitive introduction, I can understand why she chose it. Nothing can fully stop the human aging process, but the 50 yr old and 80 yr old featured in this book could easily pass for a decade or more younger. They also enjoy better health and activity levels than their Standard American Diet peers. The mother and daughter pair behind this book come across as such pleasant, friendly, joyful people you can't help but absorb their enthusiasm for good fresh food.

Updating original review from 2019:

Downgrading from 5 stars to 3 stars:
I am downgrading this book from 5 stars to 3 stars because for the last 2 weeks I have only ate food based on recipes using this book. However, I have made other recipes from this book before this 2 week period. Let's say, I'm not impressed with the recipes. I LOVE to cook and try new recipes. But with this book, I thought some of the ingredients were expensive and hard to find only for the recipe to call for 1/4 of a teaspoon. The recipes required a lot of prep time (which I usually don't mind) but with all the dicing, blending, grading and cutting-the results were still BLAND for several recipes.

Generally, I rate recipes by grades A+ to D and most of the recipes averaged a C+ to a C-. Within this two weeks I gave one A+ and one D-. The grades I have given to other recipes before this 2 week period averages to be a C. I enjoy plant based eating because I love to taste the amazing power of spices and different veggies, but I didn't taste anything with most of these recipes.

This is my honest review now that I have tried most of the recipes but I did enjoy reading her cookbook.

I read Ageless Vegan in a weekend. This book is so easy to follow in such a colloquial tone and very organized. Each recipes indicates the benefit-rather it is skin, bones, life longevity, etc. I enjoyed being able to research the information Tracye provided because she provided the source.

I love how easy the recipes are and there aren’t a lot of things in the book that I can’t find in most grocery stores. I also like the fact that the recipes aren’t too complicated and you can still get some store bought items such as frozen prepared whole-grain pie crust. Most vegan books it’s hard to find the recipes and the authors make everything from scratch, including the pot(J/K). Lol. However, in ageless vegan there are a few things that I would have to research on knowing where to get such as: currant or dandelion greens. I’m glad that I will be using my blender a lot more than just for smoothies.

I also love the beautiful pictures that displayed a lot of the recipes. The best mom and daughter duo! There are very few things in this book that I wouldn’t eat. The recipes I can relate to so much because most of them are foods I ate growing up in the South. There are recipes for many categories and I CAN NOT WAIT TO TRY! I am such a picky eater but I know I would like these recipes. Great job writing this book!

The only thing I do not like is there is no prep time indicator after each recipe. I never know how long it would take to make.

There is a little voice inside of me that snarks at the notion of "reading" a cookbook, not to mention counting it towards my Goodreads reading challenge. I am including it because this book opened my eyes to the lack of diversity in the popular vegan community, as well as to recognizing racism as an oxidative stress factor. Oxidative stress factors increase free radicals, which have negative effects on health.

Until now, most of the vegan lifestyle or vegan diet proponents that I know of are white, and most of those are men. I do not have an issue with white male vegans, but I have an issue with them being the bigger voice and face of the vegan community. How have I not heard of Tracye McQuirter - and her work and activism - until now?

The women (Tracye and her mother, Mary) of Ageless Vegan have been vegan for 50+ years. They transitioned in 1988, and Tracye's vegetarian transition was sparked by the combination of her mother's focus on whole, non-processed foods, and a Dick Gregory lecture in which he "graphically traced the path of a hamburger from a cow on a factory farm, through the slaughterhouse process, to a fast-food restaurant, to a clogged artery, so a heart attack."
Gregory's civil rights activism expanded to include animals, and that was a catalyst for the college-aged activist in Tracye.

I'm a hard sell on vegan cookbooks, but I'm glad this one was recommended to me. I loved the two authors' combined perspectives and stories of veganism, and I am excited to try some of these recipes. I generally caution readers against acquiring nutritional information from cookbooks, and I would reiterate that here; there are many claims in this book about which foods are "good for skin," etc., but the authors do not cite any scientific literature on this subject. However, I would certainly recommend this cookbook to certain vegans (and others) in my life.

First let me say I want to be friends with these ladies-they paradoxically radiate calmness and energy.
The recipes range from beautifully light (Mango Smoothie- yum) to hearty (three-bean chili- can't wait until fall!).
My only disappointment (and it's a small thing) is that, not counting the smoothies, there are so many recipes that need a hot oven. When its in the 90s, the oven is off limits.

I like to try other vegan recipes because I like the way my gut reacts to vegan, whole foods, non processed foods. But at this point, I have enough and am looking for a taste profile. I think these recipes are great for folks ready to eat spicy, more American southern with a dabbling in Asian, southeast Asian and east Indian dishes.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a cookbook and felt like I was getting fulfilling reading. This book did that. I didn’t really want to put it down. I WANTED to read it.

It has wonderful tips, super relatable, smooth, and one of the most helpful cookbooks I’ve ever read. It’s easy to follow and has a lovely and helpful format. Great design and pretty pictures. Yum looking recipes and a like able voice. I truly enjoyed this book.

I'm glad I read this but I would rather have old lady wrinkles the size of the Grand Canyon than drink a mustard green/water/lemon juice smoothie every single morning. Pls no

Every black person should become a vegan, or close to it as possible. With our overwhelming rates of obesity, loneliness, and trauma... this would help curb some of that pain and unhealthiness.

Well written book focusing on The Secret to Living A Long and Healthy Plant-Based Life. The book begins with a description of how and why Tracye McQuirter and her mother Mary became vegans. Tracye also describes the fundamentals of becoming vegan. This introduction is followed by 100 recipes. I have tried a lot of the recipes and they are excellent.

I really enjoyed this book and look forward to trying many of the recipes. It was great to read about someone else's plant based journey, especially two women who look like me. I know that Tracye has another book (By any greens necessary) and I plan to check that out as well.

One star was lost because many of the recipes include oil which I try to avoid in my cooking at home.

This is a very good, common sense book with some interesting sounding recipes, a bit different from what you usually see. Might even consider purchasing this book. Unfortunately, someone had a hold on it so I had to return it before I could make any of the recipes. But they sure looked good.

I have not yet made any of these recipes, but as I return to vegetarian eating after a ten year absence, I find myself excited about trying them. The tips on stocking your pantry and kitchen equipment are spot-on.

Great info for new vegans as well as seasoned vegans

As a 13-year vegan, I continually look for new recipes and ideas to spice up my meals. While this book uses too many mushrooms (I hate mushrooms), it still has great advice and some lovely recipes.

My favorite cookbook in a long time! Recipe after recipe was easy, gorgeous, delicious, comforting, and made me feel good! My very picky youngest (25-yo) son likes everything, too. :) A winner!!! I'm currently using the library book, but I can't live without this one. :)

Many lovely recipes, but I need nutritional information particularly regarding saturated fats (I had no idea there were so many in coconut milk, avocados, etc.), sugar, and sodium. Also, it can challenging to find whole wheat pie crust and quite a number of other ingredients in some neighborhoods.

I don't usually read/review cookbooks here, but this is a really good book. If you're interested in becoming vegan, this is a great recipe book. The author and her mother both share their experiences and recipes that are tried and true.

I am not a vegan (am a vegetarian) but this book is inspirational. Both a fresh voice of health and culture as well as offering well put together recipes. Great antidote to both fast food culture and meat based thinking.

Wonderful story and the recipes look great. They do contain oil and will require modification for WFPB eaters. Tracye's mom is what we all should aspire to for good health as we age!
