A year later, John is given the duty of escorting Gillian to her wedding and immediately recognizes her as the temptress he’s dreamed of for months. There’s not much he can do when she's promised to another man, but fate intervenes and this time, passion—and adventure—can’t be denied. Honor demands he stay away from the MacLeod’s enchanting daughter, but love has a very different ending in mind...

Captivating Scottish romance!
John Erly is an English Lord, banished by his father, who has relocated to Scotland. With a wild reputation to live up to, he flirts with all the ladies, but when the beautiful, but painfully shy, Gillian MacLeod arrives, he is warned to stay away from her.
But, while attending a masked ball, Gillian takes the bold step of stealing a kiss from the only man what makes her heart skip a beat.
John never learns the identity of the enchanting young lady until Gillian must be escorted home for her wedding. Thrown together in an uncomfortably awkward situation, the pair finds it hard to hide their true feelings for each other.
Along the way they will encounter much danger and intrigue, while falling deeply in love. But, Gillian’s father will never allow a marriage between his daughter and the rouge Englishman. Is the relationship doomed? Will Gillian be forced to marry a man she doesn't love?
It has been a good long while since I read a rousing Scottish romance and I had begun to miss those lovely Scottish traditions and fascinating superstitions and magic, along with the action, adventure and intrigue, plus with Valentine's Day right around the corner, I'm in the mood for a little romance.
This book has all those elements, along with a tortured hero, and strong female lead, who has the courage to take what she wants, to find a way to be with her true love, while remaining true to herself and blossoming into a respected heroine in the process.
Gillian’s quietness is misconstrued, with people drawing the conclusion she isn’t all that bright or does not wish to contribute. Nothing could be further from the truth and she surprises even those closest to her, when she steps out of her shell, proving her mettle, and quieting those who doubted her.
John’s backstory is unique, and I loved how he rose to the occasion to win Gillian, even though the odds are against him.
Naturally, there are a few battles to fight and there is also an interesting competition for the right to wed Gillian, which adds a spark of action and adventure, which is essential for a traditional Scottish romance, and kept me engaged, not only in the plot, but also for the characters.
There is a fairy tale quality to the story, which keeps things light amid the danger and angst. I enjoyed the fast pace, the characterizations, and the way Gillian and John fought so hard to be together.
This is a quick read, very enjoyable and is certainly entertaining. I always enjoy stepping back in time and letting myself get swept away by the beauty and tradition of Scotland, which is a nice refreshing change of pace after reading so many dark and serious novels in a row!
Enchanted by the Highlander was fun and whimsical Cinderella retelling! I loved how the author took a beloved fairytale and added her own twists to the story to make it feel more realistic for a Scottish setting. I loved how the author really paid attention to detail and made you feel like you were actually in Scotland and in the castles. It felt like I was transported there!
The main female character, Gillian, was a sweet and docile character. I loved having a character that wasn't brash or overly charismatic. Gillian felt very genuine and kind. Which is why she was the perfect fit for the Cinderella character! I did admire that she grew into a more adventurous and strong-willed as the story progressed. It was nice to see her stand up for herself and not let other characters walk all over her. John was an extremely charming and outgoing man, who seemed to be the opposite of Gillian. However, as John opened up, he turned out to be a very kind and understanding man. They brought out the best in each other, which made for a really sweet romance.
The romance did feel a bit sudden and a tad ridiculous in the beginning, but I liked how the author slowed down the pace of the romance as the book progressed. There was a lot of angst between John and Gillian, which kept their relationship interesting. I would have liked an even slower burn between them, but I still found them to be a very sweet and well-matched couple.
I really enjoyed the plot of this book and how much action the author included! Some scenes felt a little slow or repetitive, but as a whole, this book was very entertaining! I loved how the author added elements of danger, mystery, and adventure throughout this story.
Overall, this was a sweet and fast read! If you love historical romances and fairytale retellings, then this is the perfect book for you!

Take a fairy tale then set it in the Highlands of Scotland at some time in the past and add a lot of twists to the story along the way . . . . what a great idea this proved to be! In this case Cinderella is Gillian MacLeod and she doesn’t have two ugly sisters or a wicked stepmother, instead she’s one of a dozen sisters and the one who usually watches and fades into the background - so much so that her sisters tend to speak for her without asking what she thinks or wants! They don’t do it to be cruel, they’re convinced she’s very shy and reticent with strangers…..but they couldn’t be more wrong! She proves this when visiting one of her married sisters. She has spent time in Edinburgh with her father and been introduced to lots of potential suitors but not one appealed to her. When she arrives at her sisters she is drawn to John Erly, the disowned son of an English nobleman, the man who was instrumental in rescuing her brother-in-law from imprisonment and now is Captain of his guard. Gillian is too reticent to approach the handsome sassenach but seizes the opportunity to do so during a masquerade ball hosted by her sister during which she steals a kiss from him before disappearing back to her room. That kiss seals their fate but there will be adventures a plenty before they have any chance of attaining their fairytale ending!
This is an action packed historical romance involving everything from midnight hunts, spying, a journey to marry, attacks en route and an unexpected heroine before family beliefs, relationships and dogged determination all have their role to play. The family’s image of Gillian is going to be totally revised during her adventurous escapades and her stubborn refusal to take no for an answer. She proves a strong opponent to anyone seeking to harm her or those she loves, not the whimpering, overlooked young girl they thought she was. She is willing to fight for what is right, defend those in need and still remains a sweet, quiet young lady for most of the time! English John is not worried what others think of him most of the time. He has an unearned reputation that he doesn’t dispute but is really a very kind and understanding gentleman who wants to do things the right way to make things better in the long run for all concerned. He is willing to fight for what’s right, too, and is even willing to face Gillian’s father! They make a great couple.
I found the author’s descriptions of events and scenes brought them to life in my imagination. The plot isn’t a straightforward one, there are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and I thoroughly enjoyed escaping into this historical romance!
I requested and received a copy of this novel, via NetGalley. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.
Enchanted by the Highlander was a delightful romance with a fairy tale twist that was full of adventure, a rakish and charming hero, and a heroine who comes into her own.
Gillian MacLeod is by far the quietest and shyest of her sisters and the one no one would imagine would long for adventure. However, wanting a taste of excitement and knowing she will never see him again, Gillian steals a kiss from a stranger during a masquerade ball. That stranger just so happens to be John Erly, a disowned Englishman who came to Scotland seeking a new life. John has dreamed of the mystery woman from that night for months and immediately recognizes Gillian as her when they meet again a year later. The only problem is Gillian is on her way to be married and John is assigned the task of escorting her to the wedding. Soon Gillian and John are off to deliver her to the wedding while ignoring their growing attraction when fate intervenes and pulls them down a new path.
Due to her quiet nature, Gillian is believed to be dim-witted when actually her rationale for being quiet is that by the time she’s asked for her opinion, one of her many sisters has already expressed the same idea. As her family thinks she’s not bright, they have a tendency to make decisions for her and Gillian usually lets them. Over the course of the book while away from her family, Gillian finally has the chance to express her opinion and learns that she wants to make her own decisions. I liked Gillian more as she became more assertive and grew into her own person.
John ended up in Scotland after his brother died and his father disowned him and he has spent his time there making a life for himself despite not being trusted by most due to his being an Englishman. John is an incredibly compassionate person and anonymously helps those less fortunate knowing they wouldn’t welcome his help if they knew the source. John harbors a lot of guilt over the death of his brother and over the course of the book works through that guilt. I liked that he had to work through the guilt and that it wasn’t something he instantly got over.
Gillian and John have an immediate physical connection, but due to the circumstances, their romance is definitely a slow burn. I enjoyed that the characters had time to get to know one another, which made their connection much more believable. When things do progress to the physical side, the scenes are well done and enjoyable to read. John is a bit slower to recognize that he has feelings for Gillian, but I do think it makes sense that he would be hesitant once you learn his history.
My favorite part of this book was while the characters were on their journey to get Gillian to her wedding. During the trek, various fun hijinks ensued and we got to meet a bunch of characters along the way. Plus I liked how it forced the main characters to interact more as they were alone most of the time. The competition at the end is also a ton of fun and I enjoyed the various tasks the characters needed to complete.
I did want to mention that despite this book being the fourth book in the Highland Fairy Tale series, it stands well on its own and you could start with this one if you wanted to. Personally, I will be going back to check out the previous books as I really enjoyed this installment.
Enchanted by the Highlander overall was a very fun read with the perfect mix of romance and adventure. I definitely recommend this book if you’re looking for a romance with a bit of adventure.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
I can't get enough of Cornwall's deliciously clever fairy tales with their Highland twist! And, yall, Enchanted by the Highlander left me enchanted as promised and completely smitten.
The Gist: Gillian is an agreeable lass so when her father promises her hand in marriage to his elderly friend...she goes along with things. There's a snag, though. Her heart belongs to another. The very man tasked with making sure she arrives at her arranged wedding safely. And who is entirely improper for her since he's *gasp* a sassenach! Oh, yall. There's gonna be some dramas. I loved Gillian and John. Completely. They're both far from how the world views them. Gillian isn't meek or quiet like her family believes. She's thoughtful and has a fire burning inside her that craves an adventure. And John. He's an outsider living in Scotland after his family disowned him but he's far from the scandalous rogue everyone believes. He's a good heart and a fighter who protects and provides for others even if they don't entirely trust him and his English blood. That whole pesky sassenach bit, ya know?
I adored them as a couple. That they saw through the outer wrappings and into the heart of each other. Saw all of the things others glanced over and missed. That they saw apparent weaknesses as strengths and character.
With danger and adventure hounding their every step across the country it was an exciting whirlwind of events that kept me on my toes and hoping these two could find their way despite everything thrown in their path.
All in all, another enchanting romance from Cornwall! Whenever I spend time in the world Cornwall's created I'm left delighted, satisfied and craving the next adventure she'll take me on.
Series: A Highland Fairytale #4 Publication Date: 11/14/17
Once I started reading this delicious book, I couldn’t put it down. So, yes, I pulled an all-nighter and it was worth absolutely every sleepless minute. Just as the title suggests – you will be enchanted. The book is wonderfully clever, delightfully humorous and is sweetly romantic. It has it all and, as always, the author fills the story with unexpected twists and turns. The writing is flawless, the pacing is perfect, the characters are robust and fully developed, and the romance is enchanting.
I just have to say that I absolutely LOVE the MacLeod’s. You have this huge, gruff, fearsome Highland warrior, Donal MacLeod, known as Fearsome MacLeod. He has had nine wives and a dozen daughters. He has loved all of his wives and adores his daughters. Watching the daughters manage and outmaneuver their gruff father is delightfully entertaining.
Gillian Alanna MacLeod is a ghost in her own home. No, not literally, but it is as if nobody really sees or knows her. They love her unquestionably, but they don’t really know who she is. She is shy and quiet, so everybody assumes she isn’t the smartest among them. They just decide things for her – without even asking her – and she lets them. If she’s asked a question, they answer for her. If she’s speaking, they just speak right over her. There are great hidden depths to Gillian and she longs for love and adventure – the kind of love her married sisters have. While she is quiet and shy – she is also very, very brave and intelligent. While others talk and babble, she observes and comes to understand.
John Erly, an Englishman who has been disowned by his father, has lived in the Highlands for the past five years. He serves as Captain of the Guard for his friend Dair Sinclair (from the first book in the series). John is always ‘the outsider’ and while he is respected for his skills, he really isn’t accepted as one of them. He is charming, caring and very honorable, but he adopts a persona as a rogue.
Gillian first sees John when she stops off at her sister’s home on her way back from Edinburgh. Everyone immediately warns her to stay away from John because he is a Sassenach, a womanizer and he has nothing to offer her. However, she’s intrigued, watches him and becomes convinced that he is not at all what he appears to be. It is all a face he puts on to protect himself. She wants to speak with him, but he avoids her because he has also been warned to stay away from her. On the night of her sister’s masquerade ball, she engineers a meeting with John – and a life-changing kiss. She knows who she is kissing, but he does not.
Ten months later, Gillian returns as a betrothed woman. She has just stopped off to visit with her sister on the way to Edinburgh to be married. Circumstances conspire to make it necessary for John to escort her overland to Edinburgh rather than her going by sea. That means a torturous ten-day trip that John dreads because he has never forgotten his kiss from the mystery woman – and he’s realized that it was Gillian. To add more pain to the task, he is the one who is to act for her father and give the bride away.
The trip is both dangerous and humorous. You’ll love all the other highlanders they meet and add to their entourage along the way. I’m hoping that those Laird’s will end up being the heroes in upcoming books. During that journey, Gillian becomes a hero with songs and stories written about her.
This delightful book has a wonderful ending – conducted in typical Fearful MacLeod fashion. You want to kiss him and bop him on the head – frequently. Gillian’s sisters are also delightful and have their hand in managing their father and getting John and Gillian their HEA.
I always try to include the things I like and the things I don’t like, in my reviews. However, I absolutely LOVED everything about this book. The only thing that I questioned was -- Isn’t a Prologue supposed to be something that happens days, months, weeks, or years before the beginning of the book? It isn’t something that runs concurrent or directly adjacent to the first chapter. In this book, the Prologue just runs right into the timeline of the first chapter. So, my question is – Why not just label the Prologue as Chapter One and go from there?
"I requested and received this e-book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."
Ok read. It had instant love at first sight. I got to feel bad for John because he always had to prove himself and he never felt good enough. He always seemed to get the short end even though he had a big honorable heart and was good man.
Gillian was interesting. She went from a quiet girl to something fierce.
Good read.
Received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Enchanted by the Highlander by Lecia Cornwall is Book Four in the "A Highland Fairy Tale" Series. This is the story of Gillian MacLeod and John Erly. I have read the other books in this series (and loved them) but feel this can be a standalone book. Donal MacLeod has loved all his wives and all his daughters but they do try to out smart him sometimes. Gillian is the shyest and quietest one of the family. Gillian seems to prefer to listing along with watching others. Gillian family has taken it among themselves to talk, think and answer for her leaving Gillian without a voice really. But Gillian does dream of having the relationship her sister's have with their husbands. Gillian is warned away from John who is an outsider to Scotland and only been there a few years. Everyone goes to John when they need something and counts on him but he is still thought of as an outsider. John was the son of a Noble Englishman but was disowned by his father and started a new life in Scotland. One night Gillian and John steal a kiss at a masquerade ball where they both are strongly affected by the kiss. But John didn't know who Gillian was and wasn't able to find her and almost a year passed since that kiss. But when John is asked to escort Gillian to a man that is to be her husband he starts to learn that it was Gillian who gave him that kissed. But along they way to their destination they run into danger and that makes for them to have more time together. Really enjoyed their story! https://twitter.com/soapsrus68 https://www.facebook.com/RomanceBookR... http://booklikes.com/blog https://romancebookreviewforyou.wordp... https://www.tumblr.com/blog/romancebo...
I don't normally read Scottish/Highlander historical romances (I'm more of a Regency England kinda gal) but DANG, am I glad I made an exception! This book is AMAZING. I still don't think I'm much of a fan of clans and plaids and claymores and what-all, but the writing is spectacular and the characters are just… JUST. Words can't even. I know it's cliché, but I really DID stay up way past my bedtime because I just could not put this book down. I'd tell myself "one more chapter… ok, one MORE chapter… just ONE more, for real this time…"
I love Gillian's character. She's quiet and everyone says she's so shy, and maybe she is a bit but it seems she's more soft-spoken in a crowd of eleven sisters (eleven!!), all who seem to have no trouble ploughing right over them. When she's apart from her father and sisters (who speak for her in a well-intentioned way that Gilly tolerates but I would end up snapping eventually) she is pretty much the embodiment of Shakespeare's line "Though she be but little, she is fierce."
John is also great, a little bit broken, a whole lot of misunderstood, and thoroughly a good man.
It wasn't until about 75% of the way through the novel that the "fairy tale" part of the series name ("A Highland Fairy Tale") came to light, but when it did I was so delighted. It's a tale I don't see much of in romantic retellings, and it's worked into the story in a way that's totally believable. I won't say more than that so you can be pleasantly surprised.
This book is the fourth in Lecia Cornwall's A Highland Fairy Tale series. I felt like I wasn't missing too much by not reading the other books in the series first, though there are definitely spoilers for the earlier books just judging by some of the backstory of Gillian's sister Fia and her husband. If that kind of thing bothers you, definitely read the series in order. I'm going to go back and start with the first book now, and I've added all of Lecia Cornwall's books to my To Read list.
*I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
This review was cross-posted to my blog, Elley The Book Otter. Check it out for more reviews!
I really enjoyed the first of the series. Loved the second. The third became a favorite of the series…but no. I didn’t know the word “favorite” until this book. I swear this series just gets better and better. The fifth will kill me.
Lecia Cornwall presents a Cinderella retelling like you’ve never know. The novel starts with John Erly, an Englishman, and Gillian. who first meet by appearance only, but they’re instantly attracted to each other. John went through a lot in life and only sleeps with available widows and the such. So young, innocent Gillian if not his type…Except she is. There’s this sense of instant lust between them but her fierce highlander father and her sisters warns him away from her. John the Englishman is seen as no good to the highlanders, a rake who murders and plunders basically despite him being Deir’s captain of the guard. Gillian on the other hand is a meek, quiet girl who just goes along with what she’s told to do. Until they hold a masked ball. She wears a dress different from the one her sister picked out for her, and while masked, slips away with an unknowing John and they kiss before she flees in the night.
10 months later and Gillian is engaged to an older gentleman, someone her father picked out for her and she went along with because that’s how she is. This brings her face to face with John, who ends up tasked to bring the girl to her wedding and worse, give her away during the ceremony since timing and travel issues kept her brother in laws and father from doing it. When they do first come face to face, he instantly recognizes her eyes and body as the ones he’s been missing for the last 10 months. Crazy. Their journey sparks all sorts of romance and tingly feelings between the two. While the characters fall from attraction to love, the reader just falls in love with them together. Sides of Gillian come out that no one has seen before, and John just becomes more and more smitten with her.
The novel goes through two undefined parts here: John bringing her to her wedding (and them falling in love) and him competing for her hand to marry her. I was so entranced while reading that I didn’t care, but I realized afterward how the story’s arc went. And I appreciated the story for that. It wasn’t what I expected going into the novel and that made it all the better.
Lecia Cornwall succeeds in creating angst to the tenth degree. The whole ‘he loves her but has to give her away’ pulled my heartstrings so bad for them both. They went through so much, were finally together, but she was another man’s. Then they went through the honorable phase, where he just wanted what’s best for her. But when he realizes how dumb that is, thus brings the part where he now must fight her father for her. Which also adds a sense of realism. They spent so much of the book insinuating that the Englishman would be dissed and not allowed with her, and then that aspect was brought into the novel for the reader to see the struggle they had to go through to be together. I loved this. Of course, throw in some outsider villains to twist the story even more.
I wished these books were on paperback because I would love to have them on my bookshelf. I loved this one so much. I don’t know how she could possibly write a better romance than the one that took place between John and Gillian. Oh, the twists and tingles my stomach endured for this book… I hope there’s a number five and I suspect Callum may be the hero in it…
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC of this book!
Gillian is one of the 12 beautiful daughters of the Laird of the MacLeods. The Laird rules with an iron hand. Gillian is shy and quiet. Before she can voice an opinion or respond to a question , someone else will answer for her. She is treated as though she is weak and shy and unable to take care of herself. So, when she has not been courted, her father betroths her to a man old enough to be her father. The consensus of opinion is the man will treat her like a delicate flower.
When Gillian is visiting one of her sisters, she meets English John. John is the son of a British earl. He saved the life of Gillian's brother-in-law. He is now the leader and trainer of the military for that clan. He is looked at with distrust by every Scotsman he meets. Everyone knows that English people have tails. But, in reality Gillian recognizes the fact that he is a man of honor and compassion. And he looks lovely too.
At a masquerade ball, Gillian kisses John. He is not sure who the woman is, but he is enamored. When he realizes who the masked woman truly is, he can think of no one but her. He has been warned to stay away from Gillian. She has been warned to stay away from John. He is a rogue and not for her. She is a delicate flower and not for him.
Ten months later, because of circumstances, John is tasked with escorting Gillian to her wedding. He is even asked to be the one who will give her away.
On the journey to Edinburgh, the party of Gillian, John and 5 of her father's men are attacked. Gillian becomes a heroine. She resists the bandits, even after being humiliated and beaten. She is the one who helps John recover from his injuries and she organizes their escape.
The MacLeod soldiers knew she was not a delicate flower. And now John realizes that too. The story of her heroics spreads all over the country.
Gillian declares her love for John, but he feels inadequate and is unwilling to step forward.
There is adventure and danger in this story. The villain is truly villainous and evil.
This is part of a series. I have read all of the books in the series and I have loved every one of them. This may be the best so far.
Gillian is absolutely the most wonderful heroine. She has never stood up for herself because she was never given the opportunity. But, she has lived a secret life that gives her satisfaction. Not only is she lovely but she is intelligent and brave.
John is a true hero. He has had an unearned reputation as a rogue and a rake. He has pain and shame from his past and yet presents himself as a carefree man with nothing on his mind except fun.
Ms Cornwall is a really talented author. She creates human beings who would be wonderful to know. She creates plots that are fairy tales on steroids. Her humor and her humanity come through in every book.
I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley. I am voluntarily writing this review and all opinions are my own.
I have read and enjoyed all the Highland Fairy Tales books and novellas, but this one is my favorite so far. Gillian MacLeod is the quiet, invisible sister who usually goes along with what she’s told. While visiting her sister Fia and brother-in-law Dair she meets John Erly, aka English John, the disowned son of an Earl and Dair’s friend. He is the captain of the guards and trains the men and boys, but he’s still considered an outsider. Gilly thinks he’s the handsomest man she’s ever seen.
Gillian is restless and hunts at night to be on her own. She observes John hunting and leaving his kill at the doors of the needy. He’s the most interesting man she knows although Fia warns her away from him. Fia and Dair are hosting a masked ball, inviting several single men for her to meet. Gilly’s costume is supposed to be a shepherdess, but she decides on something else and decides to have an adventure.
John has a good reason for hating masked balls. However, when he sees the woman in pink and gold his heart leaps. They walk outside, and he kisses her. They are interrupted, and she runs to her room losing her mask which he picks up. Shortly after, she returns to her home.
Ten months later her father has arranged a marriage to an older man in Edinburgh. He is unable to travel, so sends her to Fia’s as Dair will escort her to Edinburgh and give her away. She doesn’t want to marry this man, but John never contacted her, so she gave in to her father’s wishes. Dair has been delayed so Fia asks John, with a group of their men, to escort her overland to Edinburgh. As they ride, he realizes she is his masked woman.
The trip is dangerous and John a hero. The wedding in Edinburgh is called off and she returns home to Glen Iolair hoping John will follow her there. Since I hate to write spoilers, I’ll leave it to you to discover all that happens after she returns home. This is a very good book and I can easily recommend it. Thanks to the publisher for allowing me this ARC. No one asked for or influenced my review.
Enchanted by the Highlander by Lecia Cornwall A Highland Fairy Tale #4
With elements of Cinderella and a few other fairy tales I remember from childhood I have to say this was a thoroughly enjoyable story!
Gilllian McLeod, one of twelve daughters, is the quietest and least understood of the sisters. She steps outside of her usual boundaries to kiss a man she finds attractive while at a masked ball only to not hear from him again for so long that she finds herself engaged to another man. When Gilly meets again with John Erly, the man she kissed, he realizes who she is but believes there is no hope for the two of them. He is entrusted with her safety to get her to the wedding on time and the story at that point begins to pick up.
This story has a masked ball, a secret kiss, an overland journey, bad men to thwart, proposals aplenty, a coming into one’s own, a competition among worthy opponents and eventually true love’s kiss and true love to be found.
I enjoyed this book – perhaps not quite as much as some of the previous stories – but could not put it down once I began. I am eager to read about each and every one of the sisters and who they will end up with (8 more to go?) and also wouldn’t mind knowing what happens to some of the warriors mentioned in the story as well as the men who proposed to but did not win Gilly.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Gillian MacLeod is shy and quiet, the least likely of all her sisters to seek out excitement and adventure. But on a moonlit night at a masquerade ball, Gillian steals a kiss from John Erly. He’s been disowned by his noble English father, started a new life in Scotland. Most people are suspicious of the foreign mercenary and he does everything is his power to avoid romantic entanglements. Almost a year later, John is given the duty of escorting Gillian to her wedding in Edinburgh. There’s not much he can do when she's promised to another man, but fate intervenes when their party is attacked. I’m loving the MacLeod daughters stories & the reworking of fairy tales. Gillian has been overlooked, no one listens to her opinions, her sisters even choose her clothes for her but at a masked ball she acts on her wishes & kisses John & what a kiss! one that neither of them can forget. John is not the scoundrel his father thought but honourable & faithful. His recounting of Daniel’s story was heartbreaking. The attraction between the pair is apparent from their first meeting. Gillian is neither shy nor quiet when she’s with John but able to be herself. The contests are amusing & had me smiling. The plot is well paced & kept me reading & wanting John & Gillian to have their HEA. Another thoroughly enjoyable book & I look forward to the rest of the MacLeod daughters having their stories My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This was a very sweet tale. Gillian appeared to be shy, introverted and maybe not too smart. She was anything but. She was sent with her sister Fia and her husband to meet an eligible husband and she barely talked to any of them. She just wasn't interested. On the way home she sees English John and is immediately interested. John is an outsider in Scotland and likes the ladies quite a bit. She is warned off him, but is still intrigued. John is equally intrigued, but knows he could be killed for pursuing her. They finally share a kiss in the dark (he does not now who she is at that point) but she does. A year later, she is going to her wedding to an older gentleman and he is one of her guards. They are attacked, but escape. It takes about a third more of the book for him to realize he is worthy of her. This book is very entertaining. Lots of action, misunderstandings, a bad guy who won't die. Through it all, you realize that Gillian is a very strong young woman who knows exactly what she wants and goes after it. A funny moment in the book is when it is revealed that her father has had NINE wives and has 12 daughters. Oh My! A very good read. I got this book from NetGalley for an honest review
I thought this was a very cute story. Very, very loosely based on the Cinderella fairy tale, Gillian MacLeod has always been considered the quiet, biddable sister. But shy Gilly longs for adventure and for true love. She meets John Erly while visiting her sister Fia and is immediately smitten. She is warned by her sister to stay away from "English John", but at a masked ball, Gilly takes a chance and boldly kisses the man and runs away.
John is bewitched by the masked woman and thinks about her constantly. He has no idea who she is until 10 months later Gilly returns and immediately John knows who his masked lady is. But Gilly is not for the likes of him, a disowned, disgraced, self proclaimed rogue and rascal. So why does it hurt so much to learn she is only staying for a few days before heading off to marry? John lets her know that he knows who she is and what she did, but he keeps her secret safe. Not that anyone would believe him anyway, Gillian is too shy, too timid and too innocent to do such a thing!
When Fia asks John to escort Gilly to her intended and to stand in for her father and give away the bride, John desperately wants to refuse, but Fia will not take no for an answer. Determined to keep his distance and to ignore the temptation she presents, John tries to keep her at an arm's length. But having tasted boldness, Gillian is not willing to walk away from what could be the adventure of a lifetime.
And an adventure she will have! Within days of setting out, their party is attacked and Gillian is taken captive along with John. They barely escape with their lives and finally give in to the pull between them. John sees a side of Gillian that no one has ever seen and he shares things with her that no other living soul knows. Gillian believes that she has found her true love, but John is not as convinced, he knows he loves her, but has nothing to offer. He is sure she will be fine without him and will soon forget him.
When they are found the next morning, John begins to back away and as the story of Gilly's escape grows, so does their traveling party making any chance to talk privately impossible. But Gilly knows what she wants and what has to be done, but can she get John to agree?
This was a fast paced story with a lot of action, some laughs, some tears, villains that will not stay vanquished, great secondary characters, a couple of steamy love scenes and finally a very hard won HEA.
This book is part of the Highland Fair Tale series, but could easily be read as a stand alone. FYI - if you read this book and liked her sister Meggie, her story is already available in the Christmas in Kilts Anthology!
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*
4.5 stars Gillian MacLeod is the sister everyone can rely on to be the shy, uneventful one. On a whim, at a ball, she sneaks a kiss from a stranger. Something eventful that will never happen again being she won't see him. But of course, not seeing him again would be a very boring read...
John Erly cannot forget the kiss he receives from the gorgeous woman that night, a year ago, at the ball. Being disowned by his father and not trusted as an outsider by many, John has found that he has been assigned as an escort to none other than his beauty he can't get off his mind. But being of charge of escorting Gillian to her WEDDING changes the game. He has duties as a man to honor Gillian and her soon to be husband; however his heart, and he feels deep down hers as well, has a different idea on the topic.
I love Romeo and Juliet type of reads. Star crossed lovers that paths cross, uncross, and cross again at the worst time in life....le sigh. This one was a great read watching the two battle with what they know is right and what they feel is right. Such a great read!!
3.75* This is the fourth book in the series and I enjoyed it with that being said it did not start out well. It took quite some time for the story to get going but when it did I could not put it down. John “English John” Erly has many secrets that he keeps to himself, an English man in Scotland does not have it easy. Saving Alasdair Og from imprisonment and becoming his friend has in away given John a purpose and a job, Dair’s captain. Everyone thinks John is a rogue and he does nothing to to stop the rumors. Gillian MacLeod is one of the many daughters of Laird Donal MacLeod. Being the quite daughter, her sisters and everyone else talk for her and for the most part she allows it. The only problem is it’s getting out of hand and everyone thinks they know what she should do and what she wants out of life. She wants adventure and freedom to do what she wants and to find a great love like her other sisters. When Gillian meets John she sees the man he truly is, a caring and honorable man. John knows he’s not good enough for Gillian and does everything he can to push her way. When he sees the life he never knew he wanted slip away he needs a make a decision. This book had great dialogue, sweet romance and great sexual tension and nail biting suspense. I can’t wait for the next book.
I came across this series after reading the anthology "Christmas in Kilts" which included Meggie MacLeod's story. I quickly binge read the other books in the series. I love the "Fearsome" MacLeod family. Fearsome and a little bit wacky.
I was excited to see that John Erly was the hero in this story. He was introduced as Dair's friend in the first book and I instantly wanted to know more about him. He was perfect for Gillian. He seemed to realize what her family did not. That although Gillian was quiet, she was far from dull or unopinionated. She really came into her own in the story and reinforced just why the MacLeod's are so fearsome.
I loved John. He was strong and fierce and so sweet. He had a poor self image from some things in his past but once he gave in to his feelings for Gillian he really came through for her and showed everyone just what the "Sassenach" was made of. I loved the two of them together.
A fun story with a swift plot, action, suspense and romance.
I can't wait to see which sister is next in the line up.
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
The mighty Donal MacLeod has his hands full with twelve daughters. This is the story of one of them. Gillian MacLeod is the meek and mild sister. Always quiet and lets the rest of the world go by. She never gets chance to make her own decisions, someone always does it for her. What she really longs for is adventure. (Careful what you wish for girl.). John Erly is an Englishman living in Scotland. He is respected as the captain of the guard and a good friend to the husband of one of Gillian's sisters. He is used to being always the outsider. He certainly isn't fit to even touch the hand of the quiet beauty that is visiting. What a wonderful adventure. Our heroine really comes out of her shell and shows everyone exactly what she is made of. As our hero sees things he has only one good quality to his name and that is his honour. No matter the temptation thrown his way, he will always do the right thing. There are lots of fun characters and a particularly nasty one. A lot can happen on a journey through the Scottish highlands, all of it exciting. I loved every page and can't wait to read the stories of the other sisters.
This story is about trusting yourself and not to be afraid to speak up. Don’t let people run all over you
Hero is John . Heroine is Gillian. Gillian and her father are going to her sisters keep in Scotland. Her father and sister think that Gillian is a shy meek young lady . When someone asks Gillian an question her family answer for her. Gillian arrives in Scotland and one man catches her Eye. John. But everyone warns Gillian away from John. They call him a rake . A Rouge a player . Little do they know what John does in the dead of night . Gillian sister wants to hold a masquerade ball so Gillian can meet eligible men for her hand
Gillian doesn’t ware the costume her sister picked tor her but one of her own with a mask. After some time in the hall Gillian approached John. They go outside. Gillian knows who John is but John has no idea who the lady in the mask is After a deep kiss , John and Gillian need to break apart because there are lanterns coming into the garden. Gillian runs but she drops her mask. John finds it and he wants to find the lady behind the mask. Will he. There is more but you need to read it and see if an English man wins a Scottish lass
Enchanted by the Highlander a new adult spin on Cinderella meets a Rogue. Enchanted by the Highlander is a Historical Romance which takes place in Scotland, September 1712. It tells a story of a shy awkward young lady whose only wish was to have a nice adventure. With that one wish steps in our hero…English John. John Erly wasn’t really what you would call a hero. There wasn’t really anything heroic about John. When we first see him, he is running late to meet the ship that his friend and employer were disembarking. John is what one would call a ladies’ man. He loves women he just doesn’t want to keep them for long. Until that day over looking the bluff, he sees Gillian being assisted onto land and everything for him changed. I really enjoyed the story and the plot flowed seamlessly. I was so engrossed in the story before I knew it the story was over. The development of the characters chemistry was built upon during the course of the story that when the two-main character finally did get together it just felt natural, which made for a good story overall.
John Erly is an Englishman (Sassenach) who lives in Scotland. He is very misunderstood and distrusted because he is English. He is a good man though his reputation is of a ladies’ man. Gillian is the quiet and shy sister of the MacLeod sisters. Her sisters don’t let her get a word in edgewise, so she stays mum. Her father and sisters are very overprotective and tell her what is good for her. Her family do not know her very well, but they think they do and so they answer questions for her. Both of them hide their good deeds because most people wouldn’t believe it anyway. Gillian wants adventure, but is pressured into a quiet and staid man as a husband. John does not think he has any value to give to a wife. This is a good story about two ignored people who find someone that sees them for who they really are. Will they fight for each other? Or will they let their pasts and family get in the way? I enjoyed this story, but wanted to strangle Gillian’s Dad and Sisters at times.
Gillian MacLeod family thinks she’s shy and quiet, the least likely of all her sisters to kiss a stranger, but she does on a moonlit night at a masquerade ball she steals a kiss from a mysterious stranger, knowing she’ll never see him again. John Erly, disowned by his noble English father, started a new life in Scotland has never forgotten his mystery woman’s kiss. A year later John is given the duty of escorting Gillian to her wedding and immediately recognizes her as the temptress he’s dreamed of for months. Gillian is not exactly the shy simmering miss she’s thoughtful, but she has a fire burning inside her that craves an adventure and John is not exactly the rogue everyone belies either he has a good heart and will fight to protect and provide for others. Fate intervenes and these two have a grand adventure filled with danger and passion if only they can learn to trust each and reach out and grab their happiness. This is my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.
***ARC Review, thanks to Netgalley and the publisher. All opinions and reviews are my own***
An enchanting twist on the Cinderella story. Gillian is a quiet daughter compared to her sisters. That is until one night she steals a kiss from a man at a ball. This mans turns out to be a disowned noble named John. I loved the added fairytale twist in this story. If you love retellings and you love historical romance, then this is definitely a book for you.
A lovely Fairytale read, can`t say not much negative about it. The build up is good,a bit wordy and long. I was irritated that Ginny was casted as a dumb, too shy girl. with no functioning mind off her own. instead of giving her tools to come out of her shell.
But never fear,There is the fairy prince,or rather english lord. Ready to rescue her,and funny that, she is not in need for saving. as soon he enters her life, she comes to life and is ready to drink her tea as she likes it and finally make up her own mind. The man and love the ultimate super power.
It is a fun read,it reads easy, you meet future and past characters .it was fun and had a good time reading it.
Enchanted by the Highlander ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (A Highlander Fairy Tale #4)by Leica Cornwall
This is my first read for this author and I truly enjoyed it. The word enchanted in the title certainly suits. Gillian MacLeod one of the twelve daughters of TheMacLeod noted as the shy and quiet one surprises them all.
Gillian hardly spoke up for herself she just went along with the families wishes. It is while she is on a visit to her sisters Castle she spies John Erly. He as been disowned by father and is considered a mercenary soldier as Captain of her brother in laws troops. He is like a brother and best friend to her sister. Her sister warns her off him that he is a rogue.
Erly spots Gillian at dinner and is intrigued by her but he too is warned off her. It takes a year for them to meet again neither forgetting the other.
This story moves along so quickly. When John is enlisted to deliver Gillian to her betrothed the challenges begin. Gillian becomes a force to be reckoned with. Her bravery b comes legendary.
Yes this was a fairy tale but yes I loved it every page.
This is a forth book in a Highland Fairytale series in which our author bases her stories on some of our favorite fairytales, but setts them in the Highlands of Scotland, thus while the essence of the original fairytales can be glimpsed, the author never the less makes each story unique and her own.
Having read all of them, I thought this one captured the best parts of the original. I thought our heroine's growth of character well portrayed and as she grew into her own, I just couldn't help but like her. Her strengths and weaknesses made her more real to me.
As for our hero, I liked him from the start. He was one of those more complex heroes who've always done what's good and honorable, yet there were things in his past that bothered him and he needed to work through them.
The romance was a bit sudden, but I still got on board because they were so likable and the because the love between the two was forbidden, she being Scottish and he English.
If you're a fan of retellings of fairytales, I think you'll like this fast paced and sweet romance.
