A sick puppy abandoned on Jasmine's farm urgently needs her help to survive. And though he adores her, Jasmine doesn't know if Sky will ever trust people again. But it's not until she gets into terrible danger that she finds out...
Brilliant storytelling that will make you laugh and cry, this is Dick King-Smith for a new generation.
Helen Peters is the author of The Secret Hen House Theatre. She grew up on an old-fashioned farm in Sussex, surrounded by family, animals and mud. She spent most of her childhood reading stories and putting on plays in a tumbledown shed that she and her friends turned into a theatre. After university, she realised that she needed to find a job where someone would pay her to read stories and put on plays (though maybe not in a tumbledown shed) and so she became an English and Drama teacher. Several years later, finding herself as a stay-at-home mother of two, she decided to have a go at writing the sort of book she’d so enjoyed as a child. Helen lives with her husband and children in London, and she can still hardly believe that she now gets to call herself a writer.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is the second book in the Jasmine Green Rescues series that I've read and I adored it just as much as the first one I read.
These books are heartfelt and heartwarming and Jasmine is such a wonderful character with a great deal of love for all animals.
In this book Jasmine finds a young puppy in a bush close to death and helps nurse him back to health. This book shows the amount of time that has to go into caring for a puppy and explores what happens when people don't do their homework on caring for a puppy and what can happen to these puppies.
This book has lots of humour in it too especially with Manu around (Jasmines mischievous younger brother).
What a great friend Jasmine Green is to animals. She would make a great friend for your reader as well. She teaches empathy and compassion with the animals she rescues. She finds an abandoned border collie puppy that is dangerously dehydrated and has not eaten. Jasmine calls her new friend Sky and they become great friends as she trains Sky well so that her parents will be ok with Sky living at their farm.
Jasmine has learned to love animals from her parents. Her mother a vet and her father who looks after the family ranch. Reading Sky and Jasmine adventures you will learn the importance of the care of animals and how we can make their lives richer.
Our family had a border collie as well and the reference to how dogs do well in a pack makes the difference. The do's and don'ts of having a healthy pack family makes a dog secure and most important a part of the family. Highly recommend to all animal lovers.
A special thank you to Candlewick Press and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review
Jasmine Green Rescues: A Collie Called Sky by Helen Peters
Jasmine finds an abandoned border collie puppy. The pup appears to be near death -- with nothing to eat or drink, suffering from malnutrition and dehydration he could barely move.
Jasmine recruits her Mom (a veterinarian), to help nurse Sky (the dog) back to health. It takes quite some time for the puppy to get back on his feet and start acting like dog. But the whole Green family showers him with love, care, and kindness. Learning to trust humans again was even more difficult than regaining his health. Sky had been mistreated and abandoned and those hurts scar the heart. Jasmine continues to care for Sky and show him all humans aren't the same. Just when the reader thinks Sky will never bond with, nor trust Jasmine, he comes to her rescue.
A sweet young readers (7+) book. Short chapters and beautifully illustrated, this third installment is a real treat.
Book three of a great series for transitional readers. Not necessarily an early reader chapter book, more for third and fourth graders or advanced younger readers. All about Jasmine, growing up on a farm, with a veterinarian mom, and a passion for animals. With each book in the series, Jasmine finds another animal who needs her love and attention--an abandoned Collie puppy in this one. Great details about animal care and training. Loved this one.
Jasmine this time on their farm discovers an abandoned and severely uncared for dog in a hedge on their farm and takes it upon herself to help get him as healthy and well as a normal dog.
As she and Tom help the dog, they also look after some pesky chinchilla's and see to the extent how much Skye was mistreated as he freaks out during a storm but proves his loyalty later in the book when Jasmine gets in trouble and when a woman shows up knowing Skye, just what will happen to him?
This book raises awareness of animal adoption and care again focusing on dogs this time perfect for Animal Ark Fans.
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
Jasmine Green once again finds an animal to rescue, this one a collie puppy. While out on a walk around the farm, she hears whimpering and finds this collie pup under a bush. He is so small and weak he can't even stand. She brings him home and calls her mom, a vet, to ask her to come home and check him out. It turns out that he is about five weeks old, malnourished, covered in sores and is so week that he can't even hold his head up. With her mother's guidance, Jasmine and her friend Tom nurse Sky back to health. Mom wants to rehome Sky, but Jasmine has other ideas.
As with the other books in this series, it is full of information about raising and training puppies. There is also a short section about mistreatment of dogs and people who get pets and then don't want to take care of them, but it is not a major part of the story. Jasmine works with Sky each day to train him, but with rescue animals that have been mistreated, there are also things that might be difficult to get over. Once again, Jasmine's younger brother adds humor to the story, so it is not all serious tones. As the story progresses, Sky and Jasmine form a bond that enables Sky to find a home and do the work that border collies have been bred to do. My grandson related to Sky as his family has a rescued dog. He also has some anxiety issues that are similar to the ones that Sky exhibited. We had a long discussion about raising and loving a rescue animal. The illustrations were well done and added much to the story, even though they are only spread sporadically through the story. Another lovely addition to this series. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.
Jasmine Green Rescues: A Collie Called Sky is the second book by Helen Peters that I have read. As a retired educator, I found several important positives for this series. The focus is on animals and their care which is of interest to children. Animal books were always popular with my students. Jasmine is a likable character that children can relate too. The setting is also one of interest with vivid descriptions making it easy to visualize.
While the series is not a mystery Jasmine has a problem to be solved in each book. In this case it is a tiny sickly puppy who in need of help. The lessons on the proper care of puppies can be learned through Sky’s story. It is taught in a heartwarming way through Jasmine’s interaction with Sky along with her family.
Second graders to third graders can read this story independently with younger children enjoying it being read to them. It is a transitional chapter book, not too difficult but not a quick reading book either. Older children may enjoy the story too but I think the main interest would be to those around eight years old or so. Older elementary age children may not find it quite as interest holding. It is known that good readers find a series that they enjoy and then read them all. This would be a wonderful one for a young reader to get hook on reading.
The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.
I picked this up because it has a sheepdog on the cover and I loved books like this when I was younger (e.g. Animal Ark, Sophie, etc) This was an adorable read, which managed to cram a lot into just a few pages. This would be the perfect recommendation for any animal-loving children aged 7+. The story follows Jasmine, the daughter of a vet, when she finds an emaciated, near-dead sheepdog puppy abandoned near her home. Having learned from her mother, she takes him home and nurses him back to health with the help of her mother. Yet, they have to wait at least a month in case his owner comes forward to claim him... I loved how this book taught the reader lots of useful information about dog training and animal behaviour. Jasmine's family are all so characterful, despite their limited time on the page (especially her younger brother!) A brilliant book, which looks to be part of a lovely series. Definitely one to keep an eye out for if you have any animal-loving readers in your school!
I read an advance reading copy, It didn't include back mater, or bonus material, but it is promised for the final book. I hope that material includes facts about veterinary science.
A sweet mid-reader chapter book, part of a series. Jasmine loves animals which may be inspired by her mom being a vet. Jasmine finds a pathetic puppy in a bush and takes it home to rehabilitate. Of course Jasmine is smitten, but mom insists they don't need another animal, especially one that needs so much attention. Did I tell you they also live on a farm?
The book is set in Canada, so some practices and verbage are UK The vet has a nurse - this made me cringe, as in the US these folks are vet techs. Jasmine's little brother bakes cupcakes and he uses measures. This mode of baking is becoming more common in the US, but isn't universal.
Jasmine this time on their farm discovers an abandoned and severely uncared for dog in a hedge on their farm and takes it upon herself to help get him as healthy and well as a normal dog.

An abandoned pup catches Jasmine’s attention in this #3 in the chapter book series. She nurses it back to health, trains, and falls in love with it, not knowing if she’ll be allowed to keep it. A few predictable twists, such as the puppy going to get help when Jasmine sprains her ankle in a distant field in the rain, don’t detract from the pleasure and suspense that animal-loving transitional readers will have while reading it. The series looks similarly enjoyable.Occasional sketched and well-spaced lines help make the text accessible. This would also make a great read aloud to introduce young readers to chapter books.
This was a lovely story with beautiful illustrations, perfect for any child who enjoys animal stories. I felt it was well written and realistic in that Jasmine has to learn the realities of dog behaviour as well as the responsibilities, and while it does have a happy ending it's carefully done and convincing. really enjoyed this one.
Sweet beginning chapter book with just enough tension/action for young readers. Love how Jasmine rescues different animals and gives them a home on her family’s farm. Sky is a border collie, and in the tips in the back of the book, readers are warned that the breed needs to have some kind of work to occupy their energies. Delightful illustrations.
I have just read this to my six-year-old son. He says “I think it’s the best Jasmine book that I’ve ever read so far. If there were more stars I could give it 100. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great early chapter book - along the lines of a Magic Tree House or Clementine - about Jasmine who tends to rescue animals that end up staying on her farm. Her mother is a vet, father runs the farm, and she has a few older and younger siblings. In this story, she finds a collie pup abandoned in a bush and brings it home. At first they are not sure the dog will survive, but when Jasmine slowly brings the dog back to life, her mother tells her they need to look for the owner. AS the weeks progress, Jasmine trains the dog and after an accident occurs, Jasmine learns that she can keep the dog. Nice illustrations and lots of white space break up the text to make this a great chapter book for early readers.
This is the third book in my newest recommend-to-most-everybody series for young middle grade readers. (It will depend on the maturity of your readers, but I'd say the sweet spot is around 6-9.) After having rescued a piglet and duckling in the previous two books, Jasmine takes on the rescue and training of an abandoned sheepdog in this newest addition. Even as an adult, I'm fascinated by the details of animal care--and my young readers just lap it up. Another big plus in my book is the loving, but realistic family life portrayed. Depending on your kid, you might want to be aware that Jasmine is a bit sassy at times and just about once a book makes a huge mistake as a result of disobedience that she believes is for the greater good. There are always consequences and discussions--but it's worth following up with a discussion or two of your own.
1.5* This book looks fun and light, but it's actually a bit intense and harrowing. If you're not quite ready for your kids to hear about animal neglect and cruelty, you might want to give this book a miss. There's lots of talk around starving a puppy and leaving him in the hedge to die. Talk around the puppy's fear of men, and the suggestion of that being because he might have been abused by a man. Then the fear of an owner who might have abused the puppy getting the puppy back and then abuse and starve him all over again. And then the small six year old says of the man who neglected and starved the puppy that "He should be starved and thrown into a hedge to die." And none of the adults in the room tell him not to talk like that. I understand that the author wanted you to feel the full force of the horror of animal abuse, but that doesn't mean it's okay for someone to wish cruelty and death upon someone. That moment just made me dislike the book.
Even though I think animal abuse is generally dealt with with sensitivity here, it definitely becomes the big thing about this book and will raise lots of questions and be troubling for sensitive readers, and I think older than the cover, font size and illustrations suggest.
This book would be perfect for kids interested in becoming a vet when they're older. And if you're not so interested in all that, it's a bit slow and sad.
Another delightful addition to this wonderful series. Animal lovers will eat this up. The depiction of Sky is well done. The series teaches great information on the care and treatment of animals while not sugar coating anything. The characters are engaging and the plot is captivating. I highly recommend this entire series.
