Falling is easy. Landing without breaking your heart? Impossible.

Harper is no longer behind bars, but it doesn’t feel like it. Ten years serving time for a crime he didn’t commit have left him shut down, numb, and a frozen wreck over the simplest of choices. He’s acutely aware of the dark-haired young man checking him out in the supermarket, but he’s too deep in panic mode to even meet the guy’s gaze. Afraid the slightest move will trigger a fall that will never stop.

Fresh off a long-term relationship with a controlling man, Malachi is stuck living with relatives who think he’s a waste of oxygen. The tall guy in the long, grey coat is the first bright spot he’s glimpsed in a long time...though the man’s unblinking stare at a bottle of shower gel is a touch alarming.

Hard experience tells both of them to turn away before lust turns to hopeless attraction, and inevitably to disaster. But once their sparks connect, the arc of electricity is too strong to deny. Even if the cost is too much to bear.

Warning: Contains an ex-con with disaster written all over him, a boy toy who’s trouble with a capital T, a damp old British house, compulsive meddling, and enough hot sex to cure the severe case of nervous babbling.

Barbara Elsborg lives in Kent in the south of England. She always wanted to be a spy, but having confessed to everyone without them even resorting to torture, she decided it was not for her. Volcanology scorched her feet. A morbid fear of sharks put paid to marine biology. So instead, she spent several years successfully selling cyanide.

After dragging up two rotten, ungrateful children and frustrating her sexy, devoted, wonderful husband (who can now stop twisting her arm) she finally has time to conduct an affair with an electrifying plugged-in male, her laptop.

Her books feature quirky heroines and bad boys, and she hopes they are as much fun to read as they are to write.

Dark and angsty, Falling sets a somber, broody atmosphere from the first word.

Desperate to find a job, Malachi, 24, struggles by on canned beans and constant rejection. Even as he's forced to live in the cramped storage room of his sister and hateful brother-in-law's house, Malachi knows he can't go back to his controlling ex-boyfriend.

Then one day Malachi sees a man with dark hair and pale skin in the shower gel aisle, a man he can't get out of his mind. When they meet again, they don't let go.

If Malachi has it rough, Harper, 34, has it rougher. Freshly out of prison following a ten-year sentence, Harper is depressed and angry. Anyone would be if they were locked up for an atrocious crime they didn't commit.

Harper was set up and is still paying the price. The daily indignities he has to endure are heartbreaking. They would have been just had Harper been guilty of the crime, but he is an innocent man.

"I didn't let myself miss the touch of another person, the promise of a kiss, the caress of my cock by a hand other than my own, conversation that made me laugh, a face that made me smile, a body that drove me crazy with desire. If I'd know you before I went inside, I'd have gone mad with longing."

Elsborg can write, and the suspense builds from the very first page as we're seeped in Malachi and Harper's stories.

Malachi's mysterious ex, Conrad, is a very real presence in this book, even though he's not on page until the end. Conrad isn't a monster, just a deeply damaged man who doesn't know how to feel. He moves from villain to quiet hero to something else. I hope we get his story in the next book.

The mystery surrounding Harper's imprisonment was well done. As Malachi, who used to be a journalist, digs deeper into the circumstances of Harper's trial, he uncovers lies, half-truths, jealousies, obsession, and greed.

We meet Harper's former colleagues (he was a teacher at an at-risk secondary school), his distant, vaguely cruel father who now suffers from early-onset Alzheimer, and his needy ex-boyfriend Brady.

Harper and Malachi are complex characters with multiple layers; the more I learned about them, the less I felt I knew.

Malachi uses humor to deal with uncomfortable situations, and his snark went a long way toward diffusing the tension of the story.

Harper is melancholy and withdrawn, but he loves Malachi and doesn't want to lose him.

"You are what's most important in my life. Freedom tastes like you."

The steam level in this book is high. The men make desperate, passionate love; nothing is off limits. But the sex is an instrument of their emotions; it's not gratuitous, and it doesn't overwhelm the story.

I would have given this book 5 stars, except I think Elsborg inserted at least one angsty incident too many into the plot. Between Malachi's childhood, his promise to Conrad, the vandalism, homophobia, petty cruelty, and fire, I felt like I was drowning.

But the ending makes the angst worthwhile.

In the last chapter, I unclenched; in the epilogue, I exhaled.

description

Harper Shaw is a 34 years old man who just been released from prison after serving a ten year sentence for a crime he didn’t commit. He’s lost, damaged and angry. He doesn’t know how to trust anymore, not when everyone turned their back on him. He doesn’t know how to smile anymore or how to rebuild his life. His life has been changed forever and he lost all his hope.

“Please let me sleep. Please don’t let me dream. Please give me my life back.
No one was listening. No one ever had.
He was still falling.”

Malachi Jones (24) is a former journalist who just got out of a long relationship with a controlling, intense man. Without a job, he is forced to live with his sister and his homophobic brother in law who tries to make his life a living hell. All Malachi wants is to be on his own so he’s looking desperately for a job. Harper and Malachi see each other for the first time in a supermarket and both of them feel a strong attraction for the other. Days later they meet each other again and the attraction is still there. They know it’s not the moment to get involved with someone, both of them, but the chemistry between them is too strong to deny or to stay away.

(I’m)"Afraid of wanting this too much. Afraid of hurting you. Afraid of falling. Afraid of landing."

“I want to please you,” Malachi whispered. “I’m not trying to mend you, I just want to be what you want, what you need. I want you for what you are now."

I really enjoyed this one, even if it wasn’t what I expected.“Falling” was a great emotional, angsty and heartbreaking at times read that held my attention from the beginning to the end. This was my first Barbara Elsborg read and I have to say I really liked her storytelling. The story is gripping from the start, at times it’s intense and the drama and angst are pretty heavy.

The plot in my opinion even if it was convenient and predictable (the mystery surrounding Harper’s imprisonment) was great. It was a solid, good structured plot that I enjoyed. What I liked the most was the main characters, especially Malachi. Both Harper and Malachi are likeable and relatable. Both of them felt real, are complex and are well developed and both of them are three dimensional. Malachi is a great guy. He’s smart and kind-hearted. He’s caring and thoughtful. He’s sweet and funny. And he’s what Harper needs. I loved the fact he’s not judging with Harper, but I think he believed everything Harper said to him too easily. Especially since he is a former journalist. I also loved how loyal and supportive he is with Harper, how he makes him smile, how he gives him hope, how he makes him trust and love again, how he likes him for who he really is.

Harper was a great character as well. My heart broke for him. He’s so lost and alone and I really felt his despair. The author did a really great job with Harper’s struggle as an ex-con in society. I understood his reluctance to get involved with someone, especially since he has some serious trust issues. He is sweet and he cares deeply for Malachi wanting to help him, to protect him and to love him. He is strong and I liked the determination he shows at some point when he realizes the future is more important than the past.

There’s no doubt there is some insta-attraction/lust between them. While I’m not a fan of insta-love, sometimes insta-attraction/lust works for me. And in this case it really did. Maybe because I enjoyed how their relationship progressed from that point – slow and naturally. Harper and Malachi are similar in some ways, but they are different as well. They complement each other, they’re good for each other, together they are pretty great. They are great as friends, but they are fantastic as a couple. I loved all their interactions and their sweet teasing and banter. Their romance is sweet and tender and even intense at times.

The steam level is high, which I must admit I didn’t expect, because this was an emotional, intense, somber read. However, I can’t complain since the sex scenes are hot, passionate and well written. Like I mentioned above, the mystery is a little predictable and I figured out pretty early who’s the villain. In spite of that, I enjoyed it and held my attention the entire time, because it’s done very well.

All in all, “Falling” is captivating read with endearing characters, interesting storyline, a lovely romance and great writing.

How many times can a heart break before there's nothing left to mend.

Barbara Elsborg has this incredible ability to make me fall head over heels for absolutely every single character she writes. Whether they're alphas, broody, broken, sweet, sheltered, jaded...it doesn't matter. Her signature writing style of dry wit mixed in with heart breaking angst, panty melting eroticism, and an added element of suspense never disappoints me. If you've read any of her other books, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. And if you haven't and that sounds like something you may enjoy, I cannot recommend a better author for you.

Twenty four year old Malachi is struggling to get by. After leaving a relationship with a man that controlled every aspect of his life, he longs to make it on his own. But life has different plans for him. Unable to get a job, unable to afford a place of his own, he's barely making ends meet living with his sister and her homophobe asshole of a husband. When Malachai notices a beautiful man standing at a supermarket and looking as lost as he feels, he feels an instant connection...and a strong surge of lust. When his brother-in-law actually does him one act of kindness and helps him get a job with a contraction company, Malachi's first day of work brings him face to face with the man who's been a constant presence in his nightly fantasies.

Thirty four year old Harper has spent the last ten years of his life behind bars for a crime he didn't commit. Shunned by everyone he once knew, they all turned away from him when he was sentenced, including his father. Harper felt the stare of the beautiful young man with the face of a fallen angel that day at the store, but he's terrified that his past will continue to taint his future.
He closed his eyes. Please let me sleep. Please don't let me dream. Please give me my life back.
No one was listening. No one ever had.
He was still falling.

Malachi was a character that you fall for right away. He has such a caring heart even after everything he's been through. But he also has a dry wit and a sharp mind that makes him endearing even though he may not be the alpha male I'm used to reading about. The way that he soothes Harper and breaks down his walls bit by bit was equal parts emotional and beautiful to read.
I'm..."
"What?"
"Afraid of wanting this too much. Afraid of hurting you. Afraid of falling. Afraid of landing.

My heart absolutely broke for Harper and everything that he's been through, especially when the details behind his arrest and sentencing begin to come to light. You'd have to be cold and dead not to feel for him.

The attraction between them is instant and solid. The chemistry is absolutely sizzling. I absolutely loved these two together.
Harper's hips shifted faster as he plunged in and out, driving Malachi against the wall, fucking him at a crazy speed, thrusting into tight slick heat, compelled to fuck him until he fell, and the world ended.

Amidst the romance there's also the suspense of the mystery behind exactly what happened with Harper and who may be responsible. Add it all together and this was an absolute page turner. Harper and Malachi together were absolute perfection. They healed each other's broken pieces. It's like they were two halves of a whole; they fit. It was sexy, sweet, emotional. I couldn't get enough of them.

Of course it just wouldn't be a Barbara Elfsborg book without all shit hitting the fan in the last 10%. I love that added bit of angst and suspense. Knowing that Malachi ex, Conrad's, book is next, I also really liked getting that little peak inside his head. For a character that I wanted to hate for most of the book, I have to say he really made me question everything I thought about him at the end. I can't wait to read his story.

If you're looking for a sizzling hot and emotional MM romance, then this book is a no brainer pick. I loved it!
You are what's important in my life. Freedom tastes like you. Without you, I'm nothing.

This was definitely one of Barbara Elsborg's more heavy reads. It was emotional. It was at times sad. Even somber. Both MCs were rather broken from the circumstances that life threw them.

Harper, convicted of a crime he didn't commit. Released from prison. Trying to start over. To live. To find his place.

Malachi, who walked away from a controlling relationship. Finds himself living with family that thinks very little of him. Lost in his own way.

Two people who meet by chance. Who teach each other to not only live again but to love. The way they slowly opened up to each other. Began to trust again. It was a sweet love. A kind love. A love born out of hope.

4.3 Stars - Lovely charming guys and a thrilling intense storyline / plot

I've loved all M/M books I've read by this author so far. This was no exception. ~ Yet another good Barbara Elsborg read.

Grandly romantic, heartwarming, quite anxiety-provoking and sometimes depressing sad. Yes, partly is this storyline so rough and awful things has happened and still happens. But jeez what a amazing touching M/M story Falling turned out to be. Not a boring minute, no slow parts or unnecessarily stuff, just very exciting, dramatic and a wonderfully fun read.

As I just said to my buddread friend Sofia: You ARE falling in love in these characters.

*********************************************************

A romance set in U.K (which I always like..)

This quite new M/M romance Falling is about Harper Smith 34 and the ten years younger Malachi Jones. Two tousled men which both just left 'something' (bad or sad). Two men which sincerely wants a new start and a new better life. They just need to stop falling... but that's both very hard and a quite struggling task.
. . . photo 9f486647-8029-4689-9d02-5228aff1b823_zpss0mkqzar.jpg

“If you fall, I’ll catch you. Promise. Now hurry up and kiss me before zombies rush in and eat you. If that does happen, make sure you keep them busy while I escape.”

One of them has just been released from ten long years in prison. He, Harper considers himself innocent convicted. Harper will try to renovate a big empty old house. Soon he meets a stunning beautiful younger man.

Malachi "escaped" from a long relationship that eventually just became debilitating and emotionally rather one-sided seven months ago. He is by now also unemployed, without his own home and is sleeping in a spare bed in his married sisters house. Not great, his brother in law hates and disgust him.

Life is hard...very hard and so unfair sometimes.

*********************************************************

The 'milk' thing...and the amazing adorable Malachi..
I guess you already got it, I loved this Malachi character. His and his lover's banters were so hilarious funny to read. I giggled, chuckled and in the next moment were there tears on my cheeks because there were also so many evil things done to these characters in the past —and still here.
“Maybe not the milk. I projectile vomit if I have to boil milk. I retch even thinking about it. You’ve seen me do it. Shut me up. Please.”
Harper dropped a thumb to Malachi’s lips and slowly dragged it across them as he stared into his eyes.
“I’ll never make you boil milk.”

 photo image.jpg1_zpsiwqz0ou1.jpg

“Oh, it’s you,” Malachi said and pouted.
“I should be angry with you.”
“I’m too cute to be angry with.”

This is anxiety in big loads but the author still manages to make me see the light (in the entire sadness). There are many highly dramatic twists and turns here and there were plenty of characters I could hate and disgust. Fortunately showed some of them up a better and more sympathetic side to the end. - Slightly drained I smiled —after all— most of the time.

I don't want to spoil or reveal too much of the plot or exactly what this story really is about. Read and enjoy. Falling is what I call a smexy romantic angsty entertainment read. ~ RECOMMENDED!!!

I so very much looking forward to read book #2 Breaking (about a interesting secondary character) later this summer. Sofia is already planning a date.

*** REALLY ENJOYED THIS ***

I've read a few of this Author's books and have to say this was the darkest..

STORY OF HARPER AND MALACHI

Harper has just been released from prison after serving a ten year stretch for a crime he didn't commit..
Malachi has just left a relationship with a controlling man, lost his job and is living in his sister's box room. They are aware of each other when they are both in the same Store on the day of Harper's release....they meet up days later when Harper is having work done on his house and the attraction is immediate and intense...

The Author did a brilliant job in portraying Harper's struggle with his life outside Prison and the negatively he faces due to his conviction. It's quite hard to read at times, the things he goes through but totally relevant to the story. The sex scenes are very erotic and thankfully not overdone.

Malachi is desperate to prove Harper's innocence and is willing to walk away from Harper so he can get his total freedom from the past.I absolutely adored Malachi...sweet,sexy and so funny

This is a really good M/M book with a very good plot that had me totally invested in the outcome...

Yet another amazing (read: painful yet funny) book by the author. I have fallen in love with the way the author weaves simple words in such a powerful way to make us lost in her world, feeling the mass of emotions in the different situations the characters went through.

It was so amazing seeing inside Malachi's head, how he thought and tried to infuse his cheery, brave self into every sad situation and brought my good feelings back. I was amazed by the way Harper bore the cruelties of selfish people, looking to take advantage of a helpless, innocent man. It was beautiful seeing the Malachi and Harper come together in such a sweet plot.

I liked Conrad, but the teasers we got about him were such a hook, and I have fallen for it. I want to know more about him. Maybe the next story features him? Can't wait to find out... ;)

This book for me was one serious "buns of steel" workout. Yes, I'm weird. This is not news to me. Moving on.

What I mean, though, is that my butt was clenching and unclenching on the edge of my seat, start to finish, for this read.

The tension, be it from the action, the suspense or from the many sexy bits just went on and on and on. So yes, "buns of steel," and I'm sticking to that, sorry.

I really loved this one, even though I found it to be a slightly angsty read and it was largely a big ole' "who dunnit", a genre of which I'm generally not a fan. This book just worked for me.

There were enough bad guys lurking where, although I had my strong suspicions as to the identity of the culprit, I didn't immediately go, "AHA! It was the butler in the library with a candle stick!"

I really felt strongly for Harper, having spent 10 years in prison for a rape that he didn't commit, then being released and having lost his entire sense of self.

I can't even imagine going from a beloved teacher to being labeled as a sex offender the next, but welcome to Harper's world.

And Malachi's lot in life has been pretty shite as well. Having to resort to living in a broom closet with his sister and her homophobic, asshole husband after losing his job and escaping his controlling ex of 7 years? Yeah, no, not so much there either.

But it was amazing to see both men come into their own and begin the healing process, mending one another's broken pieces as they started to forge a life together in the aftermath.

No spoilers, but I do have to wonder, after reading book 2 (Conrad's story) as well, if Malachi was a bit overly fearful of his ex, Conrad.

Yes, he was controlling, but other than Malachi giving in and returning on his own to return to the relationship, I never got the feeling that Conrad was malicious or blatantly hurtful toward Malachi. Just sayin'...

So no spoilers as to the specifics of the book, but I highly recommend this one with a solid 4.5 *couple-of-boy-scouts-to-rub-together* stars.

This is my first Barbara Elsborg book. I know she has released quite a number of titles but I have never been interested with the summaries – plus some friends who have read those told me one or two things that I imagined could easily be my pet peeves.

The reason why I requested the ARC for this one was simply the words “ten years serving time for a crime he didn’t commit” in the book summary ... I was really intrigued to read a romance about someone who had been to prison. How would he found the way back to normal life, to love and intimacy? What kind of person would fall in love with him?

Well, this has been an emotionally satisfying read indeed...

There is a somber ambiance to this story that just appeals to me – understandable considering Harper’s background and Malachi’s current situation (Malachi just got out of a relationship with a controlling man, he lost his job, and was forced to live with his sister and unsympathetic brother-in-law). However, the romance between the two is exceptionally written, from the tentative friendship in the beginning (mostly coming from Harper) until the final hopeful and lovely ending. I was especially drawn into Malachi’s character, maybe because he is strong-headed and loyal, and his humor helped lighten the heavy melancholic mood that is Harper’s.

The way Elsborg eases readers into Harper and Malachi’s love story is engaging, she strips the layers of these two men one by one, presenting us with quite complex characters that are very well-rounded. Nothing that they did felt out of character. Nothing that happened felt too over the top dramatic. This is the kind of tale that I just love.

The character complexities did not apply only to Harper and Malachi. There was another character that first came to us in snippets of conversation or internal monologue, but later played a very important role in saving Harper and Malachi. This character was definitely the most intriguing one in the book – and I ended up rooting for his own story because I could imagine all the goodness of redemption coming from him

It was almost a perfect read if not for a couple of things…

Unfortunately, the ‘mystery’ behind the person responsible for Harper going to prison is quite predictable. As someone who appreciates a good mystery and read Agatha Christie when she was a girl, it was a bit of a letdown. I mean, I could guess the villain from a million miles away, including the reasons behind it. I was expecting something that was not exactly too blatantly black and white.

I also felt that there were WAY too many sex scenes for my personal preference. Having said that, I actually READ them all, because Malachi’s babbling during the sex scenes was highly entertaining and it couldn’t be skipped. I admit the emotional involvement during the sex was very palpable, which made it more than just gratuitous. That is quite a significant thing for me, which is why in the end, I decide to give 4.5 stars. Hey, I didn’t skim the sex scenes! THAT rarely happens, so it counts for a winning point.

All in all, Falling is a very well-written and captivating story and definitely one of my most pleasurable stories this year. I am so looking forward to the second book.

Edited to add (03/04):
It seems that the second book will feature that secondary complicated character. Oooh, I am INTRIGUED. Coming in July it seems...

I beta read this book in 2014.

Loved the intensity, the romance and the heart wrenching emotion within these pages. The mystery is brilliantly done and not only because I never guessed who did it.

It's just a really memorable read filled with suspense, tears, laughter, blistering sex and the promise of more to come.

This is a stand alone novel, no cliffhanger but I know you will all want more of a certain cold hearted bastard that you just have to meet here.

Have fun! It's one of my favourites :)

Simply to call this 'Falling' is in itself understated, this was bloody falling into a rabbit hole with no cushy ending in sight.
But Elsborg made it work, even if she chose a very tough topic to start with. In fact this story deals with more that one 'Falling', there is the falling in love which was so good to see plus the other falling which had me at the edge of my seat. She successfully took me eagerly to the end, a place where Harper could look up and see the stars at last.
This was a surprise to me and I think to my buddy reader Ingela. She knows me well enough to know that I'm not a fan of melodrama and angst. I think she expected me to start rolling my eyes at the drama unfolding. But I didn't and I did wonder why. I think it was because even if there is a lot of drama and angst, Elsborg did not write it as a melodrama. Her writing gives us two very down to earth guys with whom I could empathise and connect. I especially enjoyed their banter. Malachi is a smart ass close to my heart and I appreciated how she portrait Harper's yo-yoing emotions, sadness, desperation, elation, happiness. Elsborg never looses sight of her characters and they remain true through thick and thin. So I'm especially happy that there is going to be a second book about a secondary character I've very very curious about.

BR with Ingela It's good to venture into new arenas with you :D

I can’t recall the last time I hate/loved a book so much. There were moments during this story when I was ready to toss my kindle against a wall in rage (but I wouldn’t, because my kindle is my baby). Then there were moments I was completely immersed within the story and forgot to eat meals.

The good: the plot was complex, the mystery was gripping, the MCs were likeable and the writing was fluent and well-paced.

The bad: I despised every character in this book except Harper or Malachi (and even they did things that pissed me off good and proper). This story was riddled with despicable characters. I lost count of the times I wanted to dive into the book and open a can of whoop ass.

This was super angsty and not the kind of angsty I enjoy. I was on edge for the majority of the story, in fact, I don’t think 5% passed by without something happening that made me feel ill at ease, and quite frankly, I just wasn’t in the mood for such negative book-induced feelings.

This could very well be a classic case of “it’s not you, it’s me." I don’t handle storylines well which involve the following:

- injustice and wrongful imprisonment;
- characters who do the whole self-sacrificial thing for futile reasons; and
- asshole characters, who are assholes for the sake of being assholes.

So, it was an intense, yet well written story, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea... but because of this bloody OCD thing I have with my books, I will still be returning for the sequel, because I just need to delve deeper into Conrad's psyche.

Loved this tale of Harper and Malachi. It wasn't too hard to work out who had done what to whom and why, BUT it was the hesitant, believable and sensual interaction between the two guys that I loved, Malachi especially.

The signs of an amazing read for me are when good writing meets a good story. I've enjoyed Elsborg in the past, particularly Bloodline. This book had a mediocre start, and the second half consisted of me wanting to DNF but trudging *cough* skimming along.

Twenty-four year old Malachi meets thirty-four year Harper. During their first private conversation, Harper shares that he's just out of prison for 10 years. The evidence that convicted him consisted of multiple eye witness accounts, pictures, DNA evidence, and finger prints. But, oh I didn't do it. Malachi: "I believe you." Um, sure? While we, the readers, know he didn't do it, who in their right fucking mind would leap to that conclusion during their first real conversation?

Sex is pretty immediate, and while I love me some smexy times, it was too much for this story. But we were gifted with lines like these during some of the scenes:

"Harper watched Malachi as he slept, tempted to run his tongue over those long lashes." Because that's what I want to do while looking at my bed partner - lick their eyelashes.

The first half pretty much consisted of Harper adjusting to life outside of jail, Malachi hiding things, and SEX.

Then we get about midway (roughly less than a week since they met I need to point out), and Malachi decides to throw himself on a sword - sacrifice his entire happiness - to prove Harper's innocence. All without Harper knowing anything about it, of course. Because, like I said, Malachi lies and hides things throughout the entire book.

And while Malachi is this complete MARTYR,because he CARES so much about Harper, he has a conversation with his ex where he says, "You're addictive."

The ridiculousness just kept going. I've shared before how I feel about the use off "oh", especially during steamy times, and Elsborg went further than ever with that. It was pretty impressive with the extent of my eye roll. I came close to pulling something. At 94%, we don't get an "oh." Hell no - we get the all out motherload: "Oohhh. Aaahh. Eeee." You forgot a few vowels there. What do you have against I and U?

And the wrap up of the crime? I was at least hanging on to that. Serving 10 years for a crime he didn't commit is gonna give me some kind of cool ending with the big reveal, right? Wrong. It was just as ridiculous and contrived as the rest of the story.

I had much higher hopes. And lots of people have 4 and 5 starred this one. But I just can't do it. This is a big, fat no. Sorry. Do not recommend.

I'm a big Barbara Elsborg fan. I love her dark, angsty and complex stories. This one didn't disappoint.

Harper is fresh out of prison after completing a ten-year sentence for a crime he didn't commit. He is all alone, he can't trust anyone and is unable to make the simplest of choices without the threat of an anxiety attack.

Malachi is a former journalist. He left his controlling ex boyfriend, he lost his job and his home and is now living with his sister and her homophobic husband.

(Because Fani asked for him)

The angst surrounding these two is so much, I wondered sometimes how they will make it through. Harper, as an ex-con, has to endure discrimination, vandalisms and violence. The injustice of it broke my heart and made me so mad! Malachi has to suffer the bulling of his brother-in-law who treats him like dirt and he gets by on practically nothing.

The first time they see each other, they both feel the spark but don't expect to meet again.Faith has other plans, though. The attraction between them is instant but there is much more to it. Malachi makes Harper want to live again, to trust and fight to prove his innocence. Harper becomes a home for Malachi, he shows him that love isn't about control. The sex between them is scorching hot and the connection feels so real.

“I. Need. You.” Malachi clutched him more tightly. “I want…” “What?” The moon? It’s yours. Anything.
“I want to make you happy.”

The mystery surrounding Harper's imprisonment is handled very well and was paired with action . In fact this is what made this a page turner for me. Fans of LAW & Order and Criminal Minds will love this story.

There are many secondary characters, some likeable, others evil. Every each of them has a vital role to play. Conrad, Malachi's controlling ex will have a big part too and what an intriguing character he was! He manages to redeem himself in the end and ok I'll admit it. For a moment I felt a connection between him and Malachi and I thought "Hmmm, it would be nice if those two got back together". Okay, okay don't shoot, it was just a thought! I'm glad Conrad will have his own story.

There were just two things that removed one star from my rating:

- When Harper shared his past, Malachi immediately believed him. Just like that. There were solid evidence that convicted Harper in the first place (although he was innocent) and it just didn't make sense to me that Malachi who was supposed to be a journalist believed an ex-con that he knew for a couple of days that easily.
-Despite the hardships surrounding him, Malachi was a pretty funny and humorous person. This was good because it balanced some of the angst in the story. Sometimes, though it annoyed me. It went on and on when they were having a serious conversation and, dude, stop talking so much during sex!!!

Despite the above I loved the book and will definately read the rest of the series. Highly recommended!

This book was not quite what I was expecting…I found myself not able to put it down, not because of the developing romance, but because of the actual plot, *gasp*.
This was a bit of problem for me, since the romance was awesome, the chemistry between the MCs soo hot, funny, romantic, miserable, and totally wonderful, that I feel like I need to re-read this soon to savor that part more. I actually rushed reading occasionally, just to see what would happen.
Ok, the plot might have been a bit over-dramatic (and wow, the angst…), but apparently that is what I want:-).
Not being a fan of insta-love, I also had absolutely no problem with the way things happened in this book, so kudos to the author for how it was written!

But wow, this book made me feel so down while reading, it was like one miserable event or MC history after the other, the misery even reflected in the weather. I could feel those cold rain drops every page. Ugh. And the loneliness of both MCs almost killed me, I felt so sorry for both of them.

I found the two characters Brady and Conrad very interesting

This was my first book by this author, and I really liked her writing style, so I look forward to the next one!

Hot chemistry and witty dialog! What else can I ask for when jumping into a Barbara Elsborg novel? As always, Elsborg inevitably pleases me with her engaging novels and easy to love characters.

Harper Shaw has just completed a ten-year term behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit. This has left him jaded and completely closed off. He trusts no one and simply hopes to get on with a quiet existence reconstructing his family home to its original state. However, even making the simplest of choices and attempting the most common of progress, he finds that he can’t leave his past behind him and just move on.

When he collides with Malachi Jones, he knows his world is about to change once again. However Malachi has his own demons he’d like to keep hidden as well. After escaping a seven-year relationship from a man that was controlling and powerful and having to put up with his brother-in-law that treats him like the garage that should be taken out, he simply wants to appreciate a relationship that will help him move on and feel something real.

Together, Malachi and Harper face not only those that won’t let Harper move on from his past, but also the threat that he might be set up again to return to prison. Together they battle their own moments of mistrust, but they keep coming back to the connection they have with one another, which seems to be stronger than all of the elements against them.

Harper was an absolutely easy character to fall for right from the beginning. I sympathized with his skittish reactions and lack of trust towards those around him. I was glad to see him open up to Malachi about his past, his fears and most of all his hopes. I hoped from the beginning that he would get his rightful ending, but I knew it would come at a high price.

Malachi was an absolute gem. I immediately fell for this character and his witty, lighthearted ways. It was fun to see Malachi break down Harper’s walls, but he did so in a way that brought out the gentle easy-going layer that was buried deep within him. The sacrifices Malachi made for Harper were heartwarming and convinced me how much he truly cared for Harper.

The powerful element in this novel, which is signature for all of Elsborg’s books is the dialog between the characters. I love, love, love witty sarcasm that’s delivered with heart and sensitivity. There were so many one liners that had me smiling and laughing the whole way through, but what I loved most of all was how reluctant Harper was to Malachi, but through his words and actions he broke down those walls brick by brick. I appreciated every reluctant laugh Malachi pulled out of Harper and I enjoyed seeing these two fall for one another. Lovely!

“You don’t need to be afraid. We’re not defusing a ticking bomb here, or doing brain surgery. It’s just sex. If you fall, I’ll catch you. Promise. Now hurry up and kiss me before zombies rush in and eat you. If that does happen, make sure you keep them busy while I escape.”

Great novel that I’m excited will continue with new characters to focus on. Count me in!

No rating.

Harper just got out of prison after serving ten years for a crime he didn't commit. He may be out of the prison walls but he still isn't a free man and he suffers everyday with the weight of his troubles. Malachi just got out of a relationship that left him homeless and desperate enough to move in with his sister and her homophobic husband. The two first see each other on a supermarket and the temptation is there, but they both fight it and walk away. But they later meet again when Malachi shows up to work on Harpers house. Fate?

Falling was a story of two down on their luck souls coming together to make one another whole agian. Malachi and Harper both had pasts that still haunted them but together they were able to start moving on. I loved Malachi and his constant babbling that was actually really funny. He was a great character and I loved how he was still able to laugh and joke even after having a shitty day. I honestly wanted more of his past and kept waiting to get it. We learned a little more at the end but it still left me searching for just a tab bit more information.

Harper was accused of a horrific crime and will forever be effected because of it, but after meeting Malachi he didn't let him stop living his life. Before Malachi came along he was just going through the motions of life but not sure what to do, but after he met the hot boy that couldn't shut up, all of that changed. I liked how we got to see him grow from someone who was afraid all the time to someone willing to give life a second chance. I felt so bad for him and didn't want to see him hurt anymore.

The beginning of this story was a little rough and I had a hard time getting into it. I was getting really worried that I wouldn't like the book, which made me sad because I was so excited to start. I got super into it around 20-30% though and it picked up, thankfully. After the initial slowness of the book there started to be a lot of action and even some suspense thrown in that had me hooked. I like the guessing and not knowing what was going to happen to end the story.

This was my first book by Barbara Elsborg but I'm already excited to read the second book in the series. Overall, I really liked these characters and the story kept my attention for most of the book. There was sexiness, suspense, and sweet characters and I loved that combination.

Harper spent the last ten years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Malachi spent the last seven years in a prison of his own. When these two meet sparks fly. They feel an instant connection to each other. Neither is sure if they can learn to trust again but they both feel deep down that the other won't hurt them.

I adored everything about both of these men. Malachi's incessant need to babble when he's nervous (or really just a lot of the time). Harper's need to always touch Malachi. These two had such amazing chemistry, you could feel it coming off the pages. So many things and people are standing in the way of their happiness but they both put up a good fight. They were both selfless in their love of each other.

This was a book of hope, redemption and love. There were a couple of times they had issues due to a lack of communication but it was solved quickly. Their struggles were believable for what they had both been through. Everything they did and every choice each of them made was always with the other in mind. More relationships should be this way.

I can't decide if I want to read Conrad's book. Part of me liked him in the end but I'm not sure he could redeem himself for all that he did to Malachi. I probably will though because I love this author's writing.

This review is posted on Way Too Hot Books.

"Without you, I'm nothing. With you, I'm everything."

My first mm read by Barbara Elsborg and all I can say is- what a pleasant surprise! This book was one of those spur of the moment/ I'm-captivated-by-the-cover picks, but it ended up being one of the best mm romance reads I read this year.

4 dark, bittersweet, suspenseful, & deeply emotional stars

This is an mm contemporary romance with a suspenseful mystery which will keep you on your toes til' the very end. It's not an easy read, because it deals with some heavy subjects like abuse, rape, suicide etc. It is told from two point of views by its main characters: the 24 year old journalist Malachi and 34 years old high school teacher and ex-prisoner Harper.

Both MCs didn't have an easy life. The timing sucks when they meet for the first time, both of them not being in a good place. Their luck seemed to keep getting worse with every next chapter, but they are not the type of characters to give up so easily, especially not the adorable, selfless and witty Malachi. He always seemed to find something positive and humorous, even in the most chaotic situations.

The story had me on brink of tears a couple of times, but then, he would say something totally inappropriate and hilarious and made it more bearable. In comparison to him, Harper was more one of those closed off and mysterious types, but fortunately Malachi's enthusiasm and humor were contagious and it was slowly helping him to come out of his shelf. Both of them are broken in their own way, but maybe together they can help each other heal.

When it comes to the mystery the author keeps you second-guessing til' the last page. I must admit that the revelation of the bad guy totally caught me off guard which is another positive thing, because that happens quite rarely lately.

And the ending? Well, I loved it! The last page left me with a huge smile on my face. That's all I'm going to share. I assume that the next book will feature one of the secondary characters in the main role and my vote goes to the guy who scared the c*ap out of me through most of the book and whose gut I hated almost til' the very ending and that's the cold, calculated, but intriguing . What can I say? First impressions can be misleading. The guy totally won me over in the end.

Who should read this book:

~ Readers who enjoy dark, heart-wrenching & touching stories.
~ Readers who enjoy love stories with tormented, but fun & endearing heroes.
~ Readers who prefer a slow-building, heartwarming, steamy and light on the drama romance.
~ Readers who love an interesting, suspenseful & unpredictable mystery/crime.

Message Of The Story : Sometimes, the people & world around us can be very dark and cruel, but at the same time, if you're lucky enough, there are moments when even in that ugliness of life you can find things worth living for, your personal ray of sunshine. Things like love.

Ok, I better stop now, before I get too sappy, LOL. All in all, I'll be eagerly waiting for the next book in the series! In the meantime I'm definitely going to read something new by this author.

Highly recommended to every MM Romance fan!

This book wrecked me. I couldn't stop reading. I couldn't get up to eat. This is dark. It grabbed me and wouldn't let go. My stomach hurt, and I ground my teeth. That's how this book made me feel.

The story is good. It's painful. These characters are going through life in the worst moments of their lives, and they find each other. They're sweet with one another. They have moments of humor.

This book is also hawt. Lots of sexy times, and they make one another laugh. That's a total win.

This is my first book by this author, and it won't be my last.

“I’m still falling. He’d swapped one sort of falling for another.

I’ve fallen in love.”

I'll admit it. Barbara Elsborg's cover models are my weakness. 🥰 Maybe it plays a part in my rating - don't hold me to that, because, well, it does help that sometimes, more often than not, her stories do pull through. 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️

Harper and Malachi's story is desperate. Desperate in the sense that it is the time that is lost that makes their connection all that more instant to act upon. It's about Falling - in love, in despair, in hope, in grief, in jealousy, in revenge. 'How many times can a heart break before there’s nothing left to mend?' 🤧💔 It's about two broken souls who are drawn inexplicably towards each other. Landing where they know the fall won't have them break, but rather heal the emptiness of their hearts.

Afraid of wanting this too much. Afraid of hurting you. Afraid of falling. Afraid of landing.”

“You don’t need to be afraid ... If you fall, I’ll catch you. Promise.

eaog

Malachi is the epitome of his namesake; an angel. An angel, who at twenty-four is sorta lost, despite how much potential of good he does have, even when his own family thinks he's worthless. Kind-hearted and honest to a fault, he's been off the beaten track for so long, that any semblance of finding his own footing seems improbable, let alone impossible. But, one chance encounter with a brooding, dark-haired soul, who seemed as lost and alone as he was - compels him to make an effort. 'I’m not trying to mend you, I just want to be what you want, what you need. I want you for what you are now.' And when fate plays a hand in having them come even closer together - the love and care he feels for him - the trust in believing his good nature - will be enough for him to do whatever it takes to rescue him from sinking any further into the depths of despair. 😥

Harper may be ten years older than Malachi, but that pales in comparison to the ten years of his life that he is lost. Wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, it's all about staying out of the light to prevent him from getting any unwanted attention for being a target of scorn and ridicule - an ex-con with vultures ready to tear him apart at his slightest misstep. Trapped in his own bleak thoughts, because life had lost all meaning of hope and will to live. But, how can he resist the sweet temptation of one so trusting and giving as Malachi? 'I need you. I need someone to teach me how to smile again. I’m almost there. I can feel it.' 🫶🏻 Someone who quiets the demons in his thoughts and envelopes him in warmth and affection - radiates with the heat of believing that he was falsely accused and demanding justice to save his name. Who could not help but fall for someone like him?

But you didn’t. I have to be dreaming. I can’t be this lucky.”

“You believed me.” Harper’s voice was thick with emotion. “You fucking believed me. You have no idea what a gift that is. What a gift this is.
”

The gentle way in which Malachi reached the depths of Harper's heart - how he ached to help him, promising him not to hurt him or throw him away, because of his own demons. Four days to fall in love may seem improbable, but for them, it felt like forever in how their bond deepened and grew. Their intimacy was touched upon their willingness to give space, as well as share their personal backgrounds. 'If I’d known you before I went inside, I’d have gone mad with longing.' 😢 Elsborg writes very direct - so raw and aching and tender, but with so much heart that it feels real. Her humor is even laced with a quirky feel, but still resonates with her character's personalities. Malachi believed in Harper so strongly, that he was convinced that he could help him; it was what convinced Harper how deeply his love went for him that he was willing to do anything to help him - 'here is never no hope. Never. Don’t ever say that.' 🥲

Even when that desperation was built on helplessness and bleak expectations, the joy that came from their instant emotions, felt so true. 🥹 So true to see Malachi give up everything to try and seek some sort of comfort for Harper's own release from prison. It's a fierce longing for human connection that burns between the two - each seeking out a way to cover up those last touches that left their lingering mark. 'Ten years of pent-up lust had rolled over him like a tidal wave.' I was overwhelmed by the way they pulled each other towards them. How they worked together seamlessly to build a home in the ruins that had been left to Harper - a house that had a personality of its own in coaxing them towards each other. ❤️‍🩹🫂

I fell so hard for you, I was bruised,” Malachi said. “I love you and you’re not allowed to say it back, not yet. Not until the moment is perfect.”

And throw in a little manic danger and mayhem and mystery, then it really kicks up a notch. The stress of proving Harper's innocence is a challenge all on its own, as it is for Malachi to fend off any unsuspecting assailants who wish to prevent Harper from having a future. It was built upon so steadily and believably that none of the actions felt out of place; the writing and the pacing is always so fluid in directing the storyline that I just felt comfortable in its presence. 👍🏻👍🏻 It was so easy to get lost in their story; even when there's no heat or electricity in Harper's ailing house, the spark between the two is electric. 'Maybe it was me who hasn’t been touched by the right person.' 🥺 There was something so wholesome and heartwarming in how Malachi's impulsive if not compulsive behavior endeared to Harper. Even when it is at the risk of his life, the cost of his own happiness, giving Harper the chance to live was a sacrifice he was willing to make. It was not just lust - it was love. And as always, the sex was --- ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 It's so much heat and passion that it sinks into your skin that you can't live without.

I was all set and ready to despise Conrad, a supposedly brilliant barrister - the most confident for how he treated Malachi in the past; how he reduced him to not feel anything in his own worth - helpless at his command - controlling him at his will. But, argh, he surprised me. 😐 He grew a pair and earned his rightful place in Harper's future and his forgiveness for his assistance in Harper's case. He and Malachi definitely have a complex relationship, but seeing Malachi close that chapter in his past was so cathartic; and yet, so heartbreaking, but very much needed. He was so brave and I loved how he stood his ground - proved how much he had changed. How Harper had healed the part of him that had been broken for being in Conrad's stead for so long. 😣

So, it does make me genuinely curious just how exactly Elsborg intends to break Conrad, so it will be enough to redeem himself from the person that he once was. 🤔

BR with Limor.

First, I need to confess! love Barbara Elsborg's books!
It started long ago, with Strangers (m/f) that I loved to bits.
It continued with With or Without Him, and Cowboys Down (m/m), that I really liked.
I love the fact that Barbara writes both m/f and m/m, I don't know why... I just do ;)

As to this book, it's an insta love kind of story, that, if done right I'm not appose to, and it worked for me here. The two MCs are in a low point in their lives, they are missing something, they need someone, and when they find each other, it's sweet, beautiful and SO hot!
Yes, I think Barbara Elsborg writes sex scene that are so hot... I was melting!

Now, I NEED Conrad's book NOW!!!

* thank you Samhain Publishing via Netgalley for a copy of this e-book *

Im 100% in love with that cover and all covers that Samhain has been putting out. Just had to get that out there!

4 solid stars

Blimey!

This book had me so torn up. I liked it, it kept my interest. I kept saying I didn’t love it. As if there was something off about it, and I couldn’t put my finger on it! Maybe I thought the 2 MCs together were just….off?!?! Except when they were together they scorched me. They lit up my insides. It has been a real long time where I have picked up a new read and felt my insides slowly burning…. the feeling in that pit of your stomach… that this! this book! it’s going somewhere!

Then I thought hmmmm, its darker, edgier, def has angst… but not a Mareangstbook? What is it that is making me feel as if this just another read???

13 hours later I still cant tell you, but I can tell you that this book, the last 25% grew and exploded and made me think… Blimey!!!!! (new word for OMG and fits with the Brit boys in this book) this is FANTASTIC.

The mystery ran smoothly, the whodunit, the clues, worked seamlessly IMO.

The sex. The sex is so desperate and so hot and so just so… I have no words for it. When you read this book you will know what I mean.

The characters, so complex and you can feel (Harper’s) desperation, you can actually feel his heartbeat.

I loved both MCs equally. They both had qualities that you would want to find in a man. And the laughter and conversations melted me. Melted me.

I went through…

Smile

Giggle

Pout

Frown

Smile

Sweat

That was hott yet Im laughing

Biting my nails

Twisting my hair

Frown

Smile

This book shall give you it all.

And I will let you know that I really really really can’t wait for Book 2.

Once you meet Conrad I think you’re also going to be salivating for Book 2.

Dear Ms Elsborg.

Please dont make us wait long~

OMG. The delicious angst! I loved this read!

Sweet, sweet Malachi. He's such a wonderful character with an horrific back story and his brother-in-law Brian is such an asshole to him. So cruel, I felt so indignant for all the hoops he was forced to jump through just to live in their house. As we learn more and more about his relationship with Conrad it just adds another layer of the pain he's had to endure in his young life.

And then, poor Harper. Talk about endurance. Every time we got more details about what happened to him I couldn't believe it. Bad things definitely happen to good people and he's proof of that.

These poor guys and their lives. I was so glad when they found each other. There's a really wonderful dance of attraction here between these men. It's a great lust at first sight story with a slow burn build of a relationship. I enjoyed seeing the ties between them get stronger and stronger with each reveal but crap they have to go through to get to their HEA is harsh.

I guessed what was happening pretty early on but that didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the thriller quotient here. This was an angsty sexy read. If I had a quibble I wish that it was more distinctly British. As it was it felt very generically North American and it wasn't until some geography was mentioned that I even realized that the story was set in the UK.

Where is book 2 taking us? I have no idea and I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Though I knew going in that this was full of angst, this was a very tough read for my sensitive self. I'm not sorry I read this book but I'm a total wuss when it comes to this kind of story.

If you like a central mystery with a slow unfolding plot, then this should also be right up your alley. I'm not the biggest fan of mysteries because not knowing and trying to be patient as new truths are revealed, is complete torture for me. This kind of set up ratchets up my anxiety significantly and I felt it pretty much to the very end. However this also had my favorite kind of angst of want, need, jealousy, and insecurity throughout and that earned lots of points. The UST in the first 20% was scorching!

Having said that, the two MC's Malachi and Harper were quite lovely. Each with their secrets and painful, painful pasts; each struggling to fix what's broken. Harper had a very tough cross to bear, and I empathized at the unfairness of every obstacle, negative thought, and tough situation thrown his way. Malachi was sweet, sassy - ever the optimist in the face of tragic circumstance and current down-on-his-luck present. Their chemistry was fabulous and I enjoyed every scene they had together.

So overall I liked this but there's a reason why I don't read this kind of thing often. Luckily for me the sequel does not look to be so anxiety producing?? I can only hope.

Thanks Meags for flinching and fretting along with me!!

Incredible! Kept me guessing the whole way through. Just tremendous the way the dark mood persisted, hovering closer... Taking a few steps back, and then Barbara Elsborg slips in a plot twist that changes so many things on so many levels.

Extremely exciting from the very first page, fascinating characters, and the mystery could have been solved so many different ways. I couldn't put it down.
