A generation ago, Constantine Madden came close to achieving what no magician had ever achieved: the ability to bring back the dead. He didn't succeed . . . but he did find a way to keep himself alive, inside a young child named Callum Hunt.
Now Call is one of the most feared and reviled students in the history of the Magisterium, thought to be responsible for a devastating death and an ever-present threat of war. As a result, Call has been imprisoned and interrogated. Everyone wants to know what Constantine was up to-and how he lives on.
But Call has no idea.
It is only when he's broken out of prison that the full potential of Constantine's plan is suddenly in his hands . . . and he must decide what to do with his power.

4.5 Stars!! I REALLY REALLY LOVED THE SILVER MASK! After being somewhat disappointed by The Bronze Key, I was growing afraid that I might have lost interest in the series all together but the ending of book three + this fantastic fourth installment has truly renewed my love for this wondrous middle grade fantasy series!
Book four in this series begins to take a dark turn. The issues Call, Tamara, and Jasper begin to deal with are deeper, more mature, and more sinister than ever before. I really enjoyed watching the progression of character development from Call's reluctance to join the magisterium to all of the difficult decisions he has to make in The Silver Mask.
At this point, I'm totally in love with the cast in this series. Each character is equally central to the story and provides valuable contributions to the plot. I really love stories that follow characters from childhood to adolescence/adulthood, so the large amount of character development among them all is very satisfying for me. The one character I struggle with is one of our villains From my interpretation, they just sort of seem evil for the sake of being evil? This is a trope I dislike and while I can understand there may be an abundance of villians like this in stories intended for younger readers (like Magisterium) but I'm hoping for some depth in their story arc in the series conclusion.
This book presents a budding romance that somewhat . . . comes out of nowhere. I do feel the romance was a little unnecessary and underdeveloped. It was not shocking or perplexing, the coupling itself is reasonable, just a tad . . . random? I feel this book has the merit to stand on it's own without forming into a love story. The romance is not at all a huge component of the story, just an add-on that may not have needed to be added.
I am so satisfied by The Silver Mask and cannot wait to complete the series!
EDIT AFTER READING This was short. Why are they all so short? I liked this one and I'm looking forward to the final book. The ending was so weird... What's going on? I liked Call's journey through this book, but the plot kind of hurt. I just liked Aaron so much.
Just finished book 3. Give me this one already? This will have spoilers for those who have not read the third book, so beware, you have been warned.
EDIT 8/09/2016 I don't think Aaron will stay dead. Perhaps he will die again at the end of the series, but his role in the series seems too important for him to die now. My theory for now is that Call will attempt to bring Aaron back, but unlike Constantine, will succeed. But Aaron might not be too happy about this. Perhaps Call will also start remembering small things from his past life. I am curious about Constantine Madden's youth.
I am really curious about what will happen next. Will Aaron come back in some way? Will Call attempt to bring him back? Will the loss of his best friend make him become more like the original enemy? The third book was darker than the first two, and I think this one will be even darker. There are so many plot options! I want it. Like, now. But I guess I'll have to wait. Again.
The title has been changed from the Golden Boy to the Silver Mask. Because the plot changed? The Golden Boy is Aaron. He was described as the golden boy in book three. But he died. Does that mean he didn't die in the original outline? (Or at least not this early?) And what about the silver mask? Does it refer to Constantine Madden's mask? Will Call find it? Does it have special magic uses, perhaps?
Wow! Such a story! Unexpected! Exciting! Fascinating! Mysterious! Emotional! Awesome! & even a bit horrifying! The ending hooked me again! I'm crying! (Magisterium endings are always unexpected, surprising & epic, & always my mouth fell open. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!?) That's not fair!
I live for reading a great, cute, adventurous, exciting, believable middle grades! (or middle grades, I'm not old for them & still can enjoy them.) yep! I have an excited inner child! XD
such a beautiful & easy read! I couldn't put it down! full of surprising peaks of Adrenaline! & with one of the most important element of a story: Fun! I laughed so much at Call's sassy or stupid comments & his thoughts & also Jasper's self-seeing comments when nobody was interested! I'm crying, send help & tissues again. (not the next book this time, I've learned my lesson last time & got that already!)
the story started different & continue differently, the premise is not the school anymore, we had a total turn with the moment of truth in the last book. so many twists & turns in this one (more than usual-Magisterium style!) like almost every chapters ended with a gasp! (I actually had to cover the last sentences of the chapters not to unknowingly spoil myself by seeing it randomly, when I was on the last page) Sometimes characters did something stupid (which didn't made me angry) or just being unsympathetic (which made me furious.) but at the end, all was well. partially. the end was beautiful! *sobs*
omg! I'm in a book hangover! what should I do? - World building: ★★★★★/5 Characters: ★★★★★/5 Writing style: ★★★★★/5 /Feelz: ★★★★★/5 (add this to my crying list ;_;) Plot: ★★★★(★)/5 Cover: ★★★★/5 General idea: ★★★★/5
After reading The Bronze Key, I was really excited about reading this and then I read some reviews which I shouldn't have because I kept on putting it off and then one day I thought, let's get it over and done with and that's pretty much what I did with this (not because it was a particularly great read but I just wanted to get to the end and done with this chaos).
It started out very exciting but then somethings happened and somethings didn't happen and I kept on waiting for some more things to happen. It is a short read which is good because if it would have been a long one, I might have lost interest altogether.
I will still end up reading the last book because I do want to know what happens at the end but the story has gone from interesting to chaotic.
Seeing everyone else rate this book so high I'm not sure what to say. Call and gang only visit one location in the entire book which is Joseph's house. I was really expecting some hostility from Call and Tamara towards having to be in the same room as Aaron's murderer. I was expecting some trauma from them having to watch their best friend die right in front of their eyes. I was expecting anger from Call and maybe a punch or two. Instead Alex is treated like this annoying classmate.
I'm not sure I understood the point of having Anastasia around, she really didn't do anything aside from the jailbreak. Jasper's character development from book two and three, just any character depth he had went bye-bye. Tamara was reduced to the love interest and abandoned Call and Aaron half-way through to warn the Magisterium which really annoyed me. She really didn't support Call throughout the book at all.
The whole romance/crushing thing felt extremely out of place and didn't fit the tone of the book. I wouldn't have minded CallxTamara but the whole 'does she like me?!' thing felt wrong for this kind of book. I would have liked to have her help Call through his whole 'I deserve to die' feelings, and that could have been the start to their whole relationship, but she never did any of that.
There really wasn't much that happened in this book. We get a brief glimpse into what Constantine and Jericho were like but it didn't really answer my questions that I had. How exactly did Jericho die? Why do people say Constantine desperately wanted his brother back when he deliberately killed him in the first place? Is the mask he wore not important? In The Bronze Key it's mentioned that he started wearing it in school because of an accident that horribly scarred his face, what happened? This whole army of mage kids raises some questions, how many people are working for Joseph? Where does he get his resources? Are they all kids from the Iron Trial? It wasn't really explained. Joseph randomly dying like that felt wrong. He was established as the main villain from book one and two and to have him just die like that so abruptly was really meaningless? It left me kind of confused? Alex doesn't feel like the main villain to me, he's just a whiny annoying brat.
Everything felt really flat and lackluster. There wasn't that wonderful world detail that the first three books had. Everything happened so fast and so abruptly in this book. I'm kind of resigned to all these details and questions being unanswered. Nothing was really solved in book four other than everyone doesn't want Call dead anymore.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is simply a mini review for two reasons. One, I got my wisdom teeth out on Thursday and am still getting back on my feet fro it. Two, this is the fourth book in a series and since I enjoy keeping my reviews spoiler free a mini review was the best way to conduct this.
To start off; what a disappointment. I’ve been reading this for five days and it was in no way worth this. It was classic middle book syndrome where basically nothing happens. With the book being as short as it is, it seriously needs something to keep you around. However, The Silver Mask really fails to do that for me. If you’ve seen my other reviews you may know I really enjoyed the first three books of this series. That’s what makes this particular one such a sad tale.
I can’t really tell you what happened throughout this book. The ties of friendship that are so common throughout the others are almost missing. This book is solely about Call and his personal journey through the events that occurred in book three. Unfortunately, I don’t think that was enough to be a full book by itself.
The romance really jumped out of nowhere, too. I was quite shocked by it (though it could have been my wisdom teeth drugs).
All in all, this is still a really good middle-grade series and I will be reading the final book when it releases. Just very disappointed that this book and I didn’t mesh well.
Also, I apologise for how short this review is but I need to do some more packing and nap because these tablets make me drowsy as all hell.
my brain is refusing to write an actual review right now. SO. I might be rereading this series bcos all the books are small... BUT ANYWAY THE NOSTALGIA RIGHT NOW I’m done. (Also Tamara and Call are so cute)
Quotes:
“I have learned that allegiances don’t matter. You can be destroyed by those who call themselves good as easily as by those who are more obviously selfish.”
“Sometimes we have to let people go. Sometimes things happen that can’t be fixed.”
“I am Callum Hunt, the Enemy of Death reborn. And I accept my destiny.”
#1.) The Iron Trial ★★★★☆ #2.) The Copper Gauntlet ★★★☆☆ #3.) The Bronze Key ★★★☆.5 #3.) The Silver Mask ★★★★☆
“Secrets hurt the keeper more than you think.”
The fourth instalment in the magisterium series was darker and grittier than its predecessors, bringing a morally grey tone that I really enjoyed.
With each book, the series strays further and further from the typical bounds and formulas of middle grade fantasies I have read and comes into its own. The Silver Mask brings into question morality, and as a result made the book feel more mature and sophisticated, rather than simple ideas where certain characters are entirely 'good', and others are 'bad'. While this book did fall into that hole in a few places, I felt that it overall did a good job at addressing the sliding scale of morality.
“Sometimes he forgot how small she was, because her bravery loomed so large in his mind.”
As for the characters, I could take them or leave them for the most part. Call is good narrator to follow, and I enjoy reading from his perspective, but for some reason I can't get fully invested in him or care more than usual about what happens to him. Tamara similarly is a character who is perfectly fine, but nothing special. Her personality seems a little forced and prescribed to me, with no chance to surprise us as the readers. My favourite character, as it has been for the last few books, is Jasper. Despite seeming at the beginning to be a stereotypical rival/bully, he gradually became more nuanced. I could definitely be biased though- I am a sucker for Draco Malfoy type characters.
Now for my main gripe- the romance. ugh. Why did we need to include this? I think it would have been the same, if not better, without including a romance. It felt unnecessary and annoying to me. I was constantly cringing in those scenes, and could not bring myself to care at all.
Overall, there were parts about this book that I really liked, and some that I really didn't. But the former outweighed the latter, and as a result this has taken the place of one of my favourites of the entire series.
This is officially one of my favourite series. I knew it will be since the middle of the first one, but this book is just... OMG!
There is no proper word for the reaction I made at the end of the last chapter (cry from pure joy and relief... honestly... I cried).
I just love the characters, the world, the magic, the relathionships. I love how emotionally and morally complex it is. Also, I always think that this is it, this is the end, nothing bad can happen anymore, but then BUMM! It proves it can.
I almost never read two books from the same series after each other, because it's overhwelming, but I read this whole series in a week. I know I still have one more before it's completely finished, but I'm 100% positive I'm gonna finish it tomorrow. Because that's how good and addicting it is. There is nothing that could change my mind about what a masterpiece this is.
I'm not really sure what to even rate this. This by far was my least favorite book in the series. I was surprised and disappointed by some of the choices that the authors decided to make in this book. My final decision on this book will all be decided by how they end the next and final book. Hopefully everything will be better.
It's been a few months since we listened to The Bronze Key and waited for The Silver Mask to be released. In that time my kids seemed to have lost a bit of their momentum with the series and their interest in listening to the audiobook in the car waned about halfway through. No matter, I thought, I'll just read the rest on my own.
Well as it turns out this book improved for me quite a bit by being read rather than listening to the audiobook. The story is quite dark, and I never felt like the narrator used a completely suitable tone. In any event, I quite enjoyed the rather scary and depressing end to this book and am quite looking forward to the final installment in the series, due out next year.
I started this series when it first came out and I stopped for a while because the previous book didnt hold my attention.
This book was similar. I am above the age of recommended so my opinion should not be taken for the younger crowd, they would probably love it. I did however really enjoyed the friendships that were built upon. And the mystery and school for magic is always fun to read about.
In this book, I could make a lot of connections with different characters. One example is when Call "successfully" brought back Aaron in one try when he didn't even think of the consequences. He had no idea that it was going to work but he still did it because he was under pressure. He didn't even do a test run. I can connect to this because I also don't think about the consequences when under pressure. For example, when the class is taking a test and everyone is finished with it except for me, I start to feel pressure and I put less thought into my work, in the end after I give the teacher the test, I think to myself regretting what I did and wanting to have put more work into the test. Another example is when my icloud was updating and for some reason, I got impatient and clicked on the stop button which said that it was going to "save" everything from icloud to a folder on my desktop. The second I clicked on that, I automatically regretted it, there was a folder called icloud that was on my desktop but there was nothing in it. I didn't know the consequence and I lost everything because of that, luckily I backed up everything that I had on my computer a few days ago so I got back most of my school work. This book made me feel like I'm not the only one who does dumb things without knowing the consequence.
Many interesting things were done with the plot to make it twist and turn. Unlike my previous book, this time I had no clue what was going to happen. Just when I thought I knew what was happening, the authors threw in a completely new thing making the journey all the more delightful.
The character development was...eh. I didn't see much growth in Call in this book. He did act more mature, but overall his character did not really grow (character-wise). However, he definitely learned a lot magic-wise.
I totally loved the ending. At first I was quite disappointed with how it ended. But then a few paragraphs later I was in complete shock. I am now totally excited to read the next book!
So there were some flaws here and there, but I really enjoyed with book despite that. Excited to read the next and last book of the series!
*Even though it says 200 pages of Goodreads, the book is actually 230 pages*
