Small towns like big stories. And Rainy Day is right in the middle of one. Rainy is settling into her new life in the small town of Latney, but when a young woman goes missing, she finds herself thrown in the spotlight again. Because the townspeople turn to her for help. Rainy reluctantly lets herself be drawn into searching for the woman. Soon enough, she is surrounded by people who are sneaking around and struggling with telling her the truth. As new suspects come to light, Rainy worries that the woman might never be found and that an innocent person will stand accused. Can she find the missing woman before it’s too late?
Jeff Shelby grew up around the beaches of Southern California and graduated from the University of California at Irvine. I am just starting this series, this book is something. When Sophia comes knocking on Rainy's door asking for help for a friend Vivian Somner, she should have known better than getting involved. Vivian's step-sister Leslie blows into town and it starts causing problems for a lot of people. Then her boy friend Shawn follows and it gets weird. And then Tori the other woman, looking for Shawn. Now it gets kind of stupid with sheriff Lewis involved. Rainy has information, but he doesn't take women seriously, they should stay in the kitchen. You will just have to read this, because a lot happens and I do not want to spoil it for you.
Such a fun light mystery. I love that there is no murder. Its calming to me and the characters are so realistic and awesome. This series is quickly becoming a favourite of mine. Getting the next book now.
I received a copy of When the Rooster Kills by Jeff Shelby in exchange for an honest review. Note: this review contains spoilers! I was delighted to receive another Rainy Day mystery. The last one was so funny (how many times does a killer get knocked out with a Bible?), I was looking forward to see what Jeff Shelby would come up with this time. I wasn't disappointed. One of my favorite descriptions was when the sherif showed up at Vivian's shortly after 9pm dresses in his short robe and slippers with a pipe in one pocket. He then proceeds to launch a manhunt for a teen who has been missing for only three hours in the sleepy town of Latney. Rainy, much to her disgust, keeps getting called on to find the missing girl since she is, after all, a private investigator. Not. She was the office manager in a PI firm. But she gets pulled into the mystery anyway because she is just so darned curious and kind hearted. Thus begins the crazy, twisted mystery of the older sister Vivian; the younger, money hungry, kidnapped sister Leslie; the boyfriend Shawn who followed Leslie to town to get money and who can't be twotiming Tori because because he broke it off with her but never told her; Tori, the girlfriend who followed Shawn to town because she things she loves him and he keeps putting her off; and finally Mickey, the gentle cook at the Wicked Wich who has had a crush on Leslie she they had been in school together. Let's not forget our normal (is anyone in Latney normal?) cast of characters: Rainy, Gunnar, Pastor Declan, and the sherif. So what what happened to Leslie? Not telling! I will, however, tell you that no one dies. I would, however, have killed the Rooster if it woke me up at 6:30!
