Rogues By: John Conroe Narrated by: James Patrick Cronin In this book the blonde werewolf Stasia, Declan's girlfriend, goes to investigate "bear attacks" but it is so horrific they figure it is werewolves. No one knows she is a were at first. Declan goes up to meet her and finds her in handcuffs. Did I mention he is one of the most powerful witches in the world? :) It is a great story and they most round up rogue weres, keep corrupt corp types off their back, and not get into trouble or killed themselves. Great narration as usual! Keep it up! Love it!

Re-listened May 2019. Initial review below.
While I still give the series as a whole 5 stars, I must admit this is my least favorite book of the series so far. So far in the series the narrator has been either Chris or Declan. To be honest, I could not really tell who the narrator was in this book. The story starts with Stacia going to investigate a possible rouge werewolf attack as a favor to a New York police detective friend. So the story was about Stacia initially but not really from her point of view. There were a lot of "she" and "he" but not a single "I" narration. In the previous books it was from either Chris's or Declan's point of view. We were told about their feelings and thought processes. The narration in this book felt somewhat "external" to Stacia. The only feelings that we know about were the feelings she expressed out loud. I read a review from someone that didn't like Stacia in this book because she seemed to be talking about her emotions to every person she came across, and in the previous books she sort of had a lock down on her emotions. Maybe the author didn't feel comfortable writing a story from a female point-of-view?
I don't think this story did Stacia much justice. She is an awesome character. Incredibly hot, smart, and probably the most bad-ass werewolf on the planet (because of how quick she can change and how fast she picked up the traits). Giving Stacia her own story was a good idea, except it wasn't executed well. First, was the narration problem as discussed above. Her tracking down a rogue werewolf was something that seemed right up her alley, except that because of her fame, she had to go and investigate in a disguise. One would think that there would be other werewolves around that could handle this issue on the down-low. Putting the most famous werewolf on the planet in a disguise seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. During her investigation she finds out it is not just one, but a pack of rogue werewolves and a witch. At this point, it is fairly obvious this case is too much for her alone. As I stated above, she is a badass, but she can't handle a pack of rogue werewolves by herself and especially can't do it when there is a witch involved too. So, of course Declan arrives to help her out. Once he got there, he pretty much took over the entire operation and Stacia was relegated to back-up (super competent - important back-up, but back up never the less). The whole point of her being there in the first place was because she wanted to handle things on her own, to prove that she could be independent and not just part of a team. That's what I mean when I say the story did not do her much justice at all.
I both liked and disliked the struggle Stacia was having with her feelings for Declan. It is obvious, even to Stacia, that Declan really likes her and would do anything for, and yet she makes comments in the beginning about not knowing exactly how he feels? She knows he would blow up the world if she was is in trouble, but isn't sure how he feels? That could have been a deflection though to hide the fact she didn't know how she felt about him. Her wolf knows
From a story standpoint these two characters are perfect for each other. I can't see Declan being with any of the witches without causing a huge problem. How could he trust that any of them liked him instead of just wanting his power and prestige? Stacia has the burden of being one of the most beautiful women on the planet as well as being powerful. The type of person that could handle her beauty could not handle her being stronger and faster than them or deal with her wolf form. The male wolves can't handle how strong she is and would just want to dominate her. Except for Chris, whom she cannot have, Declan seems like the only person she could be with. He is super powerful on his own and is not intimated by her power. He never tries to dominate her and with his personality, she is the one that is going to dominate him (emotionally). The part I did not like was the impression I got that Declan wasn't good enough for her. That isn't exactly the correct way to say it but she did say Declan wasn't the person she thought she would be with. That makes sense too in a way, based on the way she looks and how much of badass she is, Chris is the only person that really makes sense. While Declan doesn't come across as being ugly, he is way out of Chris's or Stacia's league in the looks department. This goes back to the question: "Can a 6 really go out with a 10?". I have such mixed feelings about it. I feel sorry for Stacia as Declan seems like the only person she can be with despite being so beautiful. I feel sorry for Declan who feels she is out of his league. I am also very happy for both of them that they have each other, weird right?
This series is fast paced pulp UF. The world-building is a bit simplistic and the plot and story are full of tropes and flaws but none of them really hurt the series all that much as the characters are a likeable bunch who are easy enough to root for and the story itself is engaging and fun. It all has the feel of a fun action B-movie and tends to hold my attention from start to finish.
The big change in this 10th instalment of the series was the fact that Stacia was the lead POV character for the bulk of the story. It was a fun twist! The story was pretty enjoyable. A bunch of grizzly murders in a small town, possibly committed by a werewolf, gets the Pack to send Stacia down to investigate and deal with the issue before it becomes a potential media flashpoint.
I quite liked Stacia as a lead character. If there was a flaw it was the fact that her whole life seemed to constantly revolve around thinking about Declan or Chris. I wish she had a bit more agency for herself. She is still a fun character and powerful without being so massively overpowered as Chris or Declan. Which was fun as we got a story that was fun while still being engaging even with just the lower stakes of a regular murder investigation.
All in all a fun latest instalment of the series and a sign that the support characters in this series can carry books in their own right.
Rating: 3.5 Stars.
James Patrick Cronin did OK with the audio. His general accents and narration are decent but his foreign accents are the absolute worst. Luckily we had no prominent characters in this one with accents we had to fear!
Once again Mr. Conroe proves that a Demon Accords story doesn't need to be told from Chris' perspective to be great. This story is told from Stacia's viewpoint and it is every bit as good as anything that has come before.
Since her introduction in Demon Driven, Stacia has proven herself to be a kick ass supporting character and one of my favourites in the series. In spite of remaining strong, independent and deadly, she has matured from the infatuated teenager she was before she started sharing in Chris' adventures, to a seriously big player in this series. After the events of Godhammer, I am really glad that Stacia has had the chance to be developed even further in this book.
In Rogues, she is sent to a small, rural town in Maine to investigate some murders that could have been committed by rogue werewolves. For the first time, Stacia needs to test her leadership skills when events transpire to be more than she expected.
As always, this book was fast-paced and engaging. What starts out as a smaller-scale solo adventure unfolds into yet another story that will advance the over-arching plot. On top of the investigation, this story also deals with the aftermath of Godhammer. Yet again Mr. Conroe doesn't shy away from exploring a world changing event and its consequences, which only pushes the tension, stakes and fascination levels to new heights. One of the many reasons I am always so eager to come back to this series is this kind of constant evolution and change that keeps these books fresh.
Overall this is another great book in a series that goes from strength to strength. From character and relationship development through to progression of the overall story, this book takes this series to ever more exciting places and makes this my favourite series out there right now.
As ever I am desperately eager for the next book. I suppose I'll just have to go back to stalking the author's facebook page for word count updates and any news on when Snake Eyes might make an appearance. Fingers crossed that it will be soon.
I could not read anything else by this author. This book has 448 pages and he used the word “said” 1241 times, according to my iPad. Really? No exclaimed or murmured or shouted or yelled or muttered or told or voiced or articulated or blustered, nothing but “said?” IMO that’s just a really lazy way to write. I like some kind of emotion when people talk, and “said” has no emotion whatsoever. And since all his books are mostly, if not all, more than 425 pages I can’t see myself reading thousands of “said.”
I did love the sassy and really sarcastic voice the narrator gave to Stacia/Lisa but that doesn’t make up for the fact this was 448 pages that went on and on and on. The battle that went on in the huge warehouse lasted through about 75 to 100 pages for sure. Whew, I didn’t think they were ever going to get out the other side.
I also liked the witch, Declan, who was very powerful at 19, and the huge werewolf, Stacia, and Buck, but I had to picture him different since the author gave him a “bushy beard” and I hate that. I liked Sheriff Grable, but hated Alder, as he was such an A-hole.
All the battles that went on were exciting but I was happy when they ended, so we could move on to something else.
I did love Omega, who came in late in the book but was still awesome. He was likable and scary at the same time.
Anyway, the story was okay but a little too long. There was swearing and the F-bomb was dropped 29 times. And there was not one iota of romance in this story.
As to the narrator: Fabulous! Every voice he did was completely different than the other. You always knew who was talking without the book telling you, and he read with passion and feelings. The voice he gave to Stacia was incredible, and oh so funny when she spoke.
I love this series but i was disappointed again that it was not a chris book.. I had to say it now it's out of the way.
Rogues takes place in Northern Maine after word gets out about a possible Werewolf Killing captures the attention of the supernatural community. The story focus's on Stacia and she takes point on her first ever solo mission..
The story started strong and was well written as usual. Stacia was usual Stacia, confident in control and professional, she showed great character growth and did a wonderful job heading the investigation showing great skill and insight.
I had a few moments during the book where i had to just put it down for the brief span it takes to roll my eyes and then resume reading. I have always struggled to like Declan as a character, i just don't find him interesting or that likable however those two characters seem to go hand in hand. It seemed to me the second he showed up Stacia was relegated from jaded, fiercely independent, kick ass werewolf Main character to "side piece" and she ceased to be hardly any help at all. She also seemed to stop focusing on the investigation entirely and spent most of her time talking to EVERYBODY THEY CAME ACROSS about how she feels about Declan. Like everybody seemed more interested in their relationship than anything that was happening...
If im honest i was only continued to read this book in hope the Series re-orientates itself back around to focus on Chris but please don't let my opinions put you off this series and give it a try.
Demon accord for me equate to Chris gordon. These solo stories of stacy and Declan is good enough for novella but for main series these are let down for demon accords fan.Anyone who had read whole series can't relate easily to Declan's character, simply it is not good enough as of Chris.
Yes! A walk in Stadia Reynolds shoes. Declan shows what he is capable of doing and how powerful he can be. Better yet this shows how powerful Stacia and Declan can be when working together, along with what Omega had become . Pretty badassed if you ask me !!
An amazing book. I loved this book just as much, if not more than conroe's other works. The first book I read in the series was forced accent. I didn't know it was the seventh book of the series at the time, but afterwords I went back and read the first five. I stopped when I realized Chris wouldn't narrate the sixth book. After a few weeks, and several other books I ran out of books to read so I decided to pick up executable. I loved Declan. I didn't think I could like a protagonist more than I liked chris, but declan proved me wrong. (Gets spoilery after this ... you have been warned) And I loved the romance with caoco, and was upset when they broke up, but stacia fits perfectly with declan and I love it. I love how conroe built a mini Chris almost. Gave him sorrow (kind of like grim) and insane amounts of power. Originally I expected Caeco's nanites would reproduce in his blood or something making him better giving another parallel to chris. But I never imigined Declan would actually get stacia to stop obsessing over Chris and go to him. I was annoyed by the amount of time it took stacia to realize it though. I was expecting them to kiss at the end of God hammer, then they didn't, then mabey when he first appears in rouges? No. You have to wait until the before the final battle to finally get a kiss, although she was super territorial and jealous over him even throughout god hammer.
One thing that has always annoyed me with conroe's writing is that the protagonist always seems to be just strong enough. Never too weak and never too strong. Declan threatened to burn people's brain stems and proved he could kill very easily, but at the end of rouges he didn't take an easy road with his power. It seems that conroe talks his charcters up to be insanely powerful, but when he needs to make a good fight scene he has to write with them being much weaker, because no one could really touch them. And on a similar note I have no idea how Chris was outrun by a helicopter. The guy can move faster than a high speed camera can track, as proven in forced acension. That is way faster than a helicopter. And he can run up buildings. Chris and many others constantly do things that are way faster than automobiles, yet they still use them to travel? Conroe constantly changes the "power level" of charcters to suit the plot, but that's really the only thing I can complain about, other than the fact that I can't reread the books, at least not having just finished this one. I'm too stuck on declan at the moment to read from chris's pov, and would be too frustrated by the, I'm very frustrating romances to begin with in declan's story. I just can't go back through his relationship with Caeco no he's with stacia. I do want to know how Caeco is dealing with the stacia thing as the last time they really talked she kissed him. I guess at the end of God hammer her walking away crying could be the end of it, but I wonder how their interactions at collage Arcane are going? I wonder how her and stacia would get along now? Also Chris seemed interested in Caeco as well as Declan, but he didn't really try to recruit her nearly as much as he did Declan. I think Conroe just got tired of Caeco personally. I think that in executable he had no intention of Declan becoming such a big deal, and then he realized Caeco had nothing to offer chris's team that wasn't already there. Once he decided to further Declans story in collage Arcane, he started separating them so he could being Declan into chris's team independently and just write Caeco off to some govt. Agency. He also started the budding romance with stacia. So I think Conroe didn't realize until collage Arcane that he wanted Declan and stacia to end up together. Of coarse I've never met conroe and this is all speculation and I truly don't know if any of it is true, but I think Conroe might even regret bringing Caeco into the series, as we have gone two books now with her playing a very small part, but you never know what the future, and in this case snake eyes, will bring. I still find it strange after Caeco became so important in Declan's first two books how little a part she played in the two most recent ones. Great book, great series. Five stars with out a doubt one of my favorites. Rouges is probably my second if not favorite book in the series.
I love overpowered protagonists and if anyone wants to recommend some books with very op protagonists, such as Chris and declan, especially if they weird magic, such as Declan, I would be appreciative.
This whole series is amazing. One of my absolute favorites. This book steps away from the original protagonist to introduce us to the point of view of one of the regular team members that have become the group of main characters/heroes of the series. I know some will not like that part. John Conroe has an amazing ability to give each individual character their own, Individual personality and voice, truly letting us see this world through different perspectives. Stacia is awesome, and deserved to be introduced in this way, in my opinion. Some have said in other reviews that she's too open to discussing her feelings for declan, but I would disagree. She's never been one to back down from a challenge, which a direct question could easily be interpreted as by her wolf, and she's always been up.front and honest with her feelings and thoughts. To me, the ones who would argue that she didn't stick true to her character haven't really been paying attention to her. I think John did am amazing job of putting us in her head. Also, to say that she was amazing at the beginning of the case, then useless after Declan arrives to me is incorrect. She was amazing throughout the case. Incredibly important to its success, but she wasn't too proud to admit when she needed backup and wasn't too proud to admit when his abilities offered more utility than her own. If anything, I feel she was brilliant for her willingness to step back and let declan work when she knew he had better ways to accomplish certain tasks. So, in summary, if you are into this genre at all, I HIGHLY recommend this whole series. And to me this book was another fantastic addition to the increasingly large and complicated world the author has created for us to step into when we read these books. Amazing.
The author really has to stop doing information dumps by using conversations. Everyone's secrets and weaknesses is being blabbed like it doesn't matter. They are telling the Feds how to kill them, all in the name of recapping information for the readers.
They are also name dropping other people. I'm 100% sure that the New York Alpha wasn't outed as yet (so far in the previous books), but these kids just dropped his name and stated that he has increased territory.
An interesting installment in the Demon Accords universe, as we finally see a story told from Stacia's point of view. The overall content of the book I didn't feel was as impactful as God Hammer, and the second half of the book is essentially an extended combat scene. Conroe writes those well though, and fans of the series get a lot to chew on as this book draws to a close. Looking forward to seeing the story evolve in Snake Eyes.

Insightful, interesting minds in interesting situations is what makes books better than movies and television. I really like strong relationships, trusting and defending your partner against anyone who would do them the slightest harm sends shivers up my spine. Rogues, God Hammer and College Arcane are near perfect books for me. I just wish I knew more authors who were similar.
This is a great entry into the Demon Accords. Plenty of action and sass without ignoring the human side of things. Small stones are thrown in thus book that will have far-reaching consequences. I look forward to seeing how the events play out in the next book.
I would have given it a four star rating in spite of the action tending to fall into gun porn a bit, but I am not a fan of endings that are the beginning of the next book. It feels manipulative to me, even if it's not an outright cliff hanger.
I loved traveling back to the world where Declan O’Carroll lives. This was my favorite book of the series so far. The story focuses on Stacia and Declan. This is the 10th book in the urban fantasy Demon Accord series. I love that Declan’s character, despite having overwhelming magical powers, is still sweet, a bit naive, modest, and awkward man which makes him a very likeable hero. Declan is a very powerful male witch which is an anomaly. Usually only females have power. Stacia is a werewolf who received blood from Chris Gordon (a fallen Angel) at the time she was turned which gives her special abilities. In this book, Stacia goes to Maine to investigate what appears to be a killing by a rogue werewolf. As the story progresses, Declan joins her to help to eradicate a rogue werewolf pack being aided by a death magic witch. We finally get to see Declan and Stacia’s budding romance along with more information about Omega. Many of the characters from the other books are in this book as well though in few scenes. There are also some new characters who are introduced. The story includes what you’d expect from this genre - fighting, dangerous situations, paranormal creatures, evil masterminds, henchmen, loyal friends and family, tragic back stories, mystical coincidences, snark, and laughs. I will definitely keep reading the series to see what evil beings and plans are thwarted by Declan, Stacia and the rest of the crew.
This book is mostly about Stacia and Declan. Again, the narrator changes, and I have to say is not my favorite format, but the story still manages to shine. We get to explore more about Stacia, a member of the team, we don't know as well as the others, and his relationship with Declan that is becoming more and more clear as they interact more. This time Stacia is investigating about a rogue werewolf, but when things get complicated, Declan arrives as backup, and it's a good thing, since we find out that there's a witch involved, and a survivor of Loki's Spawn. When the government gets involved, everything goes to hell, making things more difficult for our heroes, but as it is to be expected, they manage to survive, even if their target escapes. At the end, we have a much better understanding of Stacia, the relationship between her and Declan, and even their place in Chris' team and life. Also, it gives us a good idea of what's next in the series.
This is a Stasia and Declan book, and it's entertaining enough. But given the previously demonstrated power level of both of these characters, the antagonists in this book seem to present too great a challenge.
There is very good character development for both of the protagonists, which is the best part of the book. But as alluded to above, the plot is less satisfying than some other books in the series. And the use of the government as a main villain is becoming a bit cliched and unconvincing.
I'll be continuing the series, because I've really liked it as a collected work of writing, but this is one of the weaker links.
As Stacia and Declan begin to discover feelings, the summer ends and Declan returns to Arcane but the white werewolf is on his mind too. Stacia has grown stronger and more skilled as well, taking to a disguise to assist a sheriff with a new werewolf killing folks. Strangeness is afoot and the sheriff is a bit out of his depth when it turns out that it wasn’t a bear but a lycanthrope who killed recently in his town. New weres are unpredictable, aggressive and primal - and this one has a taste for human hearts.
Another winner from John Conroe. I really like this series. It's not exceptionally deep, but it is well written, well paced, and well executed in its intentions. I love the main characters too. Though I do get a bit annoyed with Stacia's obliviousness and obtuseness. Though this too is well balanced with Conroe knowing when to throw other characters at her who call her on her denseness.
It's not my favorite in the series, but it's still a very solid installment.
So, Declan and Stacia are off to the north woods to check out what appears to be a series of rogue werewolf killings. In Declan's back pocket (not actually) is one of the most technologically advanced weapons imaginable as well as his own extreme witch powers. Along the way he deals with typical gocernmental stupidity but manages to get the job done. The ending has a nice twist that sets up the next book in the series. Reading that next!
Reading these books are easy and so very enjoyable. It's all about speed. The narration is fast and lean. The plot moves with lightening speed. Through the many books in the series, the characters have been well fleshed out so it is quick to see what each will do in any situation. The situations fly by and the reading leaves you breathless. This is speed at its absolute best. I can't wait for more!
I’ll admit initially I was not won over with Declan’s character, and Stacia was more of an afterthought and/or secondary character. My opinions have changed. Both bring an interesting perspective and plenty of action to an already good series. Rogues proved to be a diversionary path, but well worth the time. Plus the author has an excellent ability to tie everything together with detail. Big setup for the next installment.
The stories are short, well written and fairly predictable. The bad guys get slightly more powerful, the good guys get massively more powerful and crush them, the U.S. Government continues to be really stupid. (Possibly the author predicted Donald trump, fits his behaviour a lot more accurately than the last guy)
I have read the entire series and I really love everything about these books. The story is complex and subtle at the same time. Things that happen early on come back in unexpected and delightful ways. The characters continue to grow and expand as we learn more about them, while their world gets darker and more challenging. Very fun series. I highly recommend.
