When lonely bookshop owner Jimmy Sommers realizes that he's in love with his best friend, Pete, he decides he'll do anything to get the handsome doctor's love in return. Jimmy gets in touch with a Stevie Nicks loving gypsy named Sonia, and together they summon up a demon from the pits of Hell to put Jimmy's love life in order. What could possibly go wrong?
The Dotted Line by Nick Pageant is a fun and dirty paranormal romance. We have shy Jimmy who falls fast in love with Dr. Pete after the two meet after Jimmy's visit to the ER.
This is a shorty, so I won't go deep into the plot and this is one that:
1. I wouldn't even know where to begin trying to explain it. LOL 2. You just have to experience it first hand.
What I can tell you is that this book is a riot.
*It has a great cast of characters. *Fast paced. *The steam is dirty. *wink, wink* *And at the end you'll be left happy from just having a great time reading it.
If you're looking for an out of the norm rom-com then give this one a go!
Look, some scenes are cringe and too ridiculous but those are just a few small ones. The rest though? OMG, I cracked up so hard. It’s no secret I love this author’s humor -Beauty and the bookworm is one of my absolute fav MM romantic comedies ever- so it’s no surprise that I had so much fun with this one. I mean, you can’t tell me this shit isn’t funny as hell :
“Were you listening to what he said? He said I’m usually cute.” “I was, you weren’t. He said ‘cute as a button’. That means he wants to pinch your cheeks, and not the ones on your ass. You are on the outer edge of the friend zone. The place where people keep their decrepit grandparents and that sad cousin who likes horses and wears orthopedic shoes.”
“You dress like one of two things; a guy who lives with his dead mother and parades around in her skin at night or a loser who never gets laid. I’m hoping there’s a dead mother in this place because at least then you’d be mildly interesting. So, tell me, you junior-high-science-teacher-looking mofo, is there a skinned corpse on the premises?”
“He decided he would tell Pete how he felt. He would declare himself and ask Pete to enter him immediately. It would be a beautiful thing.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So yeah, if you wanna laugh this is perfect. It’s silly, ridiculous and even absurd . It doesn’t have a lot of romance on page though but it’s short and I didn’t care. I usually don’t care about the romances when it comes to this author , I just wanna laugh my ass off. (Beauty and the bookworm has both romance and awesome humor). 3.5⭐️ rounded up.
This kooky little story follows awkward and anxious bookshop owner Jimmy, as he summons a foul-mouthed demon named Bill to help him gain the love and affection of his best friend Pete.
My mood has been all over the place this week and this quirky little story really helped get me out of my emotional funk. The dirty humour alone gave me the shock-value laughter I needed, which was much appreciated. Demon Bill was a filthy bastard and I loved it!
As expected, Nick's story is engaging and extremely well-written, featuring zany, yet personally relatable leads - seriously, it's like looking in a mirror with Jimmy and I don't know if that's a good thing or not!?! (Probably not).
This was an enjoyable read and just another serving of proof that Nick is a great storyteller.
I enjoyed Nick's super-quirky tale of a guy suffering from anxiety summoning a demon to help him get the guy he loves.
At 29, scared-of-life bookshop owner Jimmy Sommers isn't smoking hot or built or even charismatic, but he is determined to win over the heart of one ER doctor, by 'almost' any means necessary.
At 32, ER doc Pete Blackburn actually is all of those things, but he's also down-to-earth and real, so Jimmy's tendency toward theatrics isn't an issue for him. He's secretly longed to be with Jimmy since their first encounter.
But Jimmy, being a nervous dumbass, concocts a plan to sell 'part' of his eternal soul to a demon in order to get Pete to like him. As I've said many times before, dumb boys are dumb.
So with the help Sonia, of Sonia’s Spells and Sundries, a Romanian Gypsy, Jimmy gets his demon summoning spell and before you can say double-headed dildo, Beelzebub, aka "Bill", is standing in Jimmy's kitchen, asking for 10% of his soul.
Bill is not to be trusted, hello, he's a demon who eats souls, but he's actually a very likable character, sort of the consummate bad boy.
I also really enjoyed the side story of Sonia 'love spelling' a gay porn star, Ricky, into loving her and seeing how that played out.
The book has a lot of very funny dialogue, but not so much that it ever really goes too over the top. Several of the scenes do require quite a bit of reality suspending, but I found it to be a fun read and laughed a lot.
The humor actually reminded me a bit of TJ Klune's, to be honest, which I say as a definite compliment, as I LOVE his weird-assed humor.
I could have used a teeny bit more steam, but what's on page is pretty filthy, with a bit 'o kink for good measure, in a good way. Vanessa North would be proud. hehe
This story won't be for everyone, but if you enjoyed Nick's "Beauty and the Bookworm," then you'll probably like this one, too.
I'd have to say this one came in at around 3.75 stars for me, so if you're up for a bit of oddness in your life, this may be the short novella for you.

This was my own copy of the book, not provided by the publisher or author.
I’m far from proclaiming that I know this author well but over the years I’ve definitely come to admire him and his humor more and more. So this is classic Pageant which is always full of wry wit, self deprecating awesomeness, all with a good dash of feels to make it that much better.
Jimmy is the sweetest worry wart ever. He stresses about everything, not the least of which is that he’ll lose his friend Pete to an inevitably smarter, more handsome, and obviously an overall better person than his average ole self.
In his desperation, Jimmy enlists the aid of a gypsy and finds himself saddled with a demon who guarantees a win if only for small part of his good soul.
What ensues are plenty of shenanigans and a journey for Jimmy that makes him realize of course, that being who he really is, is all that’s truly needed to get his happy ending.
Thank you, Nick! Your humor is point on, so clever, and always appreciated!
This book was super cute, made me laugh out loud and had the added bonus of being (surprisingly) extra hot in parts. I really enjoyed Ben the demon most of all. What more could you ask for in a quick read?
So...full disclosure - I beta read this. I also nearly peed myself laughing so hard at certain points. You probably didn't need to know either thing, but I'm all about being upfront with the deets.
So...anyway.
Jimmy wants Pete, so he goes to Romanian Gypsy Sonia to find something to help. When he's offered a potion to make Pete fall into thrall he passes...
He wanted Pete to love him, but he didn’t want to make Pete love him.
Instead what Jimmy wants is something he can take that will make him irresistible to Pete. What Sonia offers is a very expensive and…dangerous spell. The spell results in a demon, Beelzebub (who likes to be called "Bill") who agrees, for a nominal price, to help Jimmy change enough to get Pete to fall in love with him.
Shenanigans, of course, ensue. And ya'll know how much I love shenanigans!
What I loved most about this is the humor. There were also some surprising feels, which made me all mushy. I enjoyed it immensely!
If you're looking to have a great time and have an hour or two to spare (depending on how fast or slow you like to go), Nick will definitely put a smile on your face. And all for the low price of $2.99! Shit. With the amount of enjoyment you'll get out of it that's one hell of a bargain! Nicky has some skills. You know what? I'll just go ahead and set his digits down below:
Love, sex, demons and bullfrogs! You just never know what you’ll find in a Nick Pageant world. :D
Our panic-first-and-foremost hero, Jimmy, is hungry for love. He would do anything to have Pete love him. Anything! Even summon a horny demon from hell with the neighborhood gypsy. Haha...With the demon (Bill) willing to deal for a piece of Jimmy’s soul, the wooing of Dr. Pete turns down & dirty and off the charts hilarious in a hurry! Will Jimmy get his man? And at what cost?
Fast, funny, and sexy voices bring this story to life. Bill is rude and crude and priceless with Jimmy. They make a perfect comedy duo. Anything and everything comes flying out of Bill’s mouth. This story must have been so much fun to write. From shocks to sweetness to dirty talk! This story has it all.
"What could possibly go wrong"...well, a lot apparently. But! I had a blast and laughed more during this quickie than I have in days. Hilarious and raunchy with a dash of sweetness. Yep, it did the job.
Seemingly, I'm alone with this, but this story didn’t work for me. It was meant to be comical, but I found the plot annoying and the characters irritating. It goes to my 'everyone-liked-it-but-me' shelf. It happens.
The Dotted Line is a fun little story! I especially enjoyed Bill -- he was a riot. There were so many moments where I could not help but chuckle or laugh. It's a beautiful thing.
Jimmy is in love with Pete. Pete is a kind, observant, and patient guy, as well as a doctor. Easy to see why Jimmy might be in love, eh? He’s just gotta get up the nerve to ask Pete out on a first date to get the whole love ball rolling. (It’s ok, I’ll wait… ;)
This story kept me on my toes in more ways than one. Pageant is unafraid to gift his characters with what most would consider ‘out there’ perspectives on the world, favorite things to do and enjoy, and the like. I loved every one of them. I could never rest on my laurels (who wants to do that anyway?) with these characters and their ballsy approaches to life (yeah, I’m rolling with the theme), even Jimmy. The surprises kept popping up like I was in a literary version of whack-a-mole. I loved it.
I laughed and snorted and snortled many times, along with moments of ‘awww’ and ‘hell yeah’, especially with a certain… frog.
I’m still trying to figure out how to describe these characters at least a little bit, more than that intro up there, without giving too much away. I think I’m going to fail in doing that, in regards to the describing part of the equation. The same goes with using any quotes or passages! Every sentence of this story is vital and propels things forward, even the mini side trips, especially those within Jimmy’s head. I highlighted a number of those, the laughs and awww’s and hell yeah’s. I don’t wanna let the frog outa the pocket, so to speak. (Hmmm, another frog reference, you say…)
Pageant’s humor is abundant here, but in a new way, showing growth in tone and usage. As I’m sitting here, writing this, I’m giggling again. This time, it’s Sonia’s fault – she’s a friend of Jimmy’s and she knows what she wants and how to get it and makes no apologies. My kinda gal! Additionally, the level of heart displayed and explored with these characters is given in healthy doses, making for a delightful mix
There were a few instances where either head-hopping was happening or the phrasing made it read that way. I reread a couple of sentences in each case and got back on track. Honestly, though, having to re-read any part of this? Not a hardship.
If you pick up this little ditty, you’ll get a neurotic store owner, a sweet doctor, and supporting characters that will have you pumping your fist in solidarity, triumph, and hilarity. It all reads like a modern fairy tale, mixing children’s bedtime stories with very adult challenges and fun, and I enjoyed every moment. This one doesn’t take itself too seriously, except in making sure the audience has fun and turning a few misconceptions back around on the idiots who believe them. ;)
I’ll leave you with this:
”First, call me Bill. Second, yes, I can help you… for a price. Now, where is this guy? Let’s get him over here. I’ll scramble his brains and he’ll have his legs in the air before you can say ‘Mephistopheles’.”
Who is Bill, you ask? I’ll let you find that out for yourself. ;)
Jimmy needs help (he doesn't really) so he goes in search of a super duper gypsy.
Our very own fabulous Sonia.
She has a very familiar shop assistant/boyfriend/love potioned helper.
And there is a conjuring by our very own GR gypsy of another familiar guy who can help Jimmy with what he needs.
For a price of course!!!
This was so much fun, I read it at the start of my holiday's and I was doing a lot of in public laugh out louds that made me look like a big ole loon and I don't care. Totally worth looking cray, cray for.
Jimmy summons a Demon to help him with the man he is in love with Pete. Jimmy wants Pete to fall in love with him so he signs a contract to make it happen. However, things don't go exactly as plan.
This was a fun short story. The ending was a bit abrupt and there was some editing issues but overall I enjoyed it.
Enjoyed this quirky little story of Jimmy, Pete, Sonia and Bill...that's Bill the naughty devil btw. A fake Adam Levine also appears (drools), and the best playlist in the world. 4 stars from me.
3,5 stars for this delicious and funny novella of a very anxious bookstore owner who summons a demon to help him win the love of his friend. Like the blurb say : what could possibly go wrong once you have a very mischievous Demon ??? A hilarious short read with of course, a sweet HEA that left me with a smile of my face !
Cute story if you are in the mood for something on the light and fun side to read. As always Nick P. shows his awesome sense of humor here. While I didn't like this one as much as Beauty and the Bookworm, there were still quite a few entertaining moments in this book.
