Mark Waid (born March 21, 1962 in Hueytown, Alabama) is an American comic book writer. He is best known for his eight-year run as writer of the DC Comics' title The Flash, as well as his scripting of the limited series Kingdom Come and Superman: Birthright, and his work on Marvel Comics' Captain America.
I am a huge fan of Phil Coulson and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and so when I went with my friend Grace to Motor City Comic Con (which was completely amazing) I bought the first S.H.I.E.L.D. comic. I really wish I could have liked it more, but it just couldn't compare to the amazing TV show. It felt like a who's who of superheroes, and there was too much going on plotwise. Phil Coulson being fantastic nerdboy Agent Coulson gives the comic an extra star (and the monkey card Fitz apparently has and gets punched when he's good which is now my headcannon for the show), but overall I wouldn't recommend the first one. Not sure if I'll continue with the series.
This issue was just bleh and weird . It didn't make much sense either . Not gonna take it up again that's for sure . Okay maybe I'll give it a second try .
Not gonna lie: I wanted Skye to be in here, seeing as she is absolutely my favorite character on Agents of SHIELD. I was sorely disappointed.
As I should have expected, this mostly focuses on Coulson -- who I do like as a character. I was glad to see May and Simmons and Fitz. I was quite surprised, however, by the appearances of multiple superheroes. It's clear that this comic is a TV show tie-in, and it was my impression from mainlining AoS that FitzSimmons, at least, had not met that many superheroes (though May and Coulson had). So, I'm really not sure how this all is supposed to be consistent, but! comics have never been known for things like consistency anyways. Either way, I enjoyed it, and I'll keep checking it out for at least a few issues.
I just don't know. A lot of stuff is going on in this one. It just feels jumpy to me. The art is great, but at the same time I don't recognize anyone from the show. Except for Phil Coulson, but that is stretching it. (Also, he has looked like this for a while in the comic books.) They do flesh out Phil a lot in this one. Makes him feel more important. Turns out he is just a huge superhero fan. Just the way we like him.
Waid didn't flesh out any of the other characters. But I guess that is coming later on.
Gonna continue reading it. Ms. Marvel (Kamala) is in the next issue. I sure don't want to miss that. She can light up any comic book!
This new series is based on the tv show. There are some differences, there is no Skye or Ward at present, which was a bit disappointing. Also, Thor is a female in this universe. The timeline is also a bit different than tv series and movies and this is shown in the first few pages as the reader gets a glimpse of Coulson during various stages of him growing into the man he is today. Lastly, the pages are either filled with Superheroes or filled with many name dropping of Superheroes and I think this has been done in issue #1 to let the audience know that any limitations of the Marvel Studios movie universe have been lifted with this series.
I already love Coulson, so I really liked this. His character is very similar to the version played by Clark Gregg on Agents of SHIELD.
Like others, I wish Skye was included, but perhaps she'll come later, or they are waiting for some Inhumans stuff to tie her in.
It's a pretty simple and simply told story, and there is nothing ground-breaking, but it's a nice introduction to the cast. Lots of Marvel Superheros make a cameo, which goes along nicely with Coulson's adorable fanboy tendencies, which is a big part of the story line. Strong 3.5 for me, but gave a 4 because I think 3 is way too low. Fun read, and looking forward to the next issue.
Impulse buy since I was getting S.H.I.E.L.D. #2 : The Animator. It was okay but I'll probably wait for the TPB before reading more. Unless they bring back Ms. Marvel. Obviously.
