In the aftermath of Robot's attempt to take over the world, the few survivors that remain must pick up the pieces of a world once familiar...but now completely alien. Collects INVINCIBLE #115-120
Robert Kirkman is an American comic book writer best known for his work on The Walking Dead, Invincible for Image Comics, as well as Ultimate X-Men and Marvel Zombies for Marvel Comics. He has also collaborated with Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane on the series Haunt. He is one of the five partners of Image Comics, and the only one of the five who was not one of the original co-founders of that publisher.
Robert Kirkman's first comic books were self-published under his own Funk-o-Tron label. Along with childhood friend Tony Moore, Kirkman created Battle Pope which was published in late 2001. Battle Pope ran for over 2 years along with other Funk-o-Tron published books such as InkPunks and Double Take.
In July of 2002, Robert's first work for another company began, with a 4-part SuperPatriot series for Image, along with Battle Pope backup story artist Cory Walker. Robert's creator-owned projects followed shortly thereafter, including Tech Jacket, Invincible and Walking Dead.
Some really great contrasts going on in this volume. Family time punctuated with distant bloody battle. Total betrayal contrasted with utopia.
It’s this kind of thing that makes me truly appreciate the independent comics. Grand vision, the willingness to go all out, and some amazingly f***ked up s**t.
The previous volume was 5-star for its action and shock-and-awe. This volume earns the same rating for its amazing follow-up. It isn't that there is no action here, because I promise you there is. But what we mostly see is the aftermath of the events of Volume 20.
I like that Mark is presented with the opportunity to be "Old Mark" and it doesn't matter as he's reached a point in his life where he's got to make different choices. Character growth is so important in any story, but in a long-running series like this it's paramount.
Also, that final panel stuck a dagger in my heart.
Mark and Eve come up with a name for their baby girl (Mark is a great dad). They move away from Earth to be a family while Nolan continues ruling over the Viltrumites. Robot continues his “peaceful” occupation of earth. Oliver has a seriously weird alien girlfriend that looks like a cockroach. All is well so far I guess lol. Another good volume!
The time between Invincible trades is almost impossible accept. This book has remained so consistently excellent, in both the quality of script and the artwork, that every volume is a guaranteed good time, a promise that other comics struggle to make, especially after the 20th(!!!) volume mark. The world of Invincible is always evolving, unafraid of change and progress, it becomes addicting for the same reasons that the Song of Ice and Fire books are so popular. Death is usually permanent, and pieces are moving all across the board in broad and meaningful ways. Invincible is an epic of the comic book world, and volume 21 stands proudly as the nest step in the series' evolution.
Plus, the Dragon Ball Z styled, week-long fist-fights carried out by god-like men and aliens are still ever present, really satisfying that specific thirst for a good power-creep. I love it.
3.5 stars This is the calm before the storm. This is the rest after having to fight for two years. This is Mark choosing his family instead of being Invincible.
After Rex Robot's succesful attempt to conquer and "save" Earth, Mark realises his own limits as both being a loving father/partner and superhero. He decides to leave Earth, knowing that staying there would make him choose the superhero life instead of prioritising his family. He doesn't want to risk hurting them, so he decides for them to leave Earth and move to Talescria.
This volume has a lot of small lovely moments between Mark, Eve and little baby Terra. I especially loved a couple of pages almost at the end, of Mark caring for Terra when she wakes up in the middle of the night. Mark spends those hours with her and promises her to always be present in her life. It's such a beautiful moment. Seeing Mark as an adult, as a father, it was truly emotional for me. But we are four volumes away from the ending, and it scares me a little for Mark's future.
In this volume we have the return of an adult Oliver, a lot more of Allen (now Mark's boss), a bit of Nolan and in-between all these peaceful moments, there's the fight between Thragg and Battle Beast. A fight to the death. It's gory and violent and a great reminder of the power of Thragg. Of the bigger threat he has become after siring dozens, if not hundreds, of Viltrumites. Children that are the same mixed race than Oliver. Children that in only months will be ready and able to fight against Nolan's empire and Earth.
So yeah, it was nice to see Mark having a moment to just live. To reconnect with his younger brother, to talk to Eve and build their life with baby Terra. But we all know it won't last more than this, and it's both terrifying and exciting. I also have to say, I really enjoyed the beginning of this collection, when Mark decides to leave Earth and he's saying his goodbyes. There's a scene with Immortal that just hits. Immortal calling him a coward, but Mark also standing his ground. Do I wish Mark would have stayed on Earth to fight the good fight? Of course I do. I actually was on Immortal's side. BUT, he deserves to be selfish, he deserves to choose his life and his family for once.
This wasn't super eventful but really strong character growth.
We get to see Mark as a daddy. It's fucking adorable. Like I was smiling the entire time (maybe because we're trying to have a kid but this was super sweet) and loved that he finally told Eve what happened to him. (Spoilers) Rape is no joke and this book doesn't just gloss over it. It can happen to anyone, any gender, and what happened was screwed up. Mark doesn't just "get over it" he has to deal with it. Even gets that, and they have a great touching moment.
Oliver is back too! I freaking love that kid. Except he's an adult now...and he's good looking...nice! I really enjoyed Mark and Oliver's interaction and thought the dinner scene (and after moment) was great.
Oh and battle beast mission ends...what a finale. Holy hell, that was 5 issues worth of fighting haha.
I really love the way this is going. However, I just have a bad feeling with the final scene in this volume and makes me worried. Hoping I'm wrong! 4/5 baby!
With Robot's sneaky plan to take over the entire world finally thwarted the few survivors look to pick up the pieces in a now very changed world. Meanwhile a typical Invincible universe blood and guts battle is fought between Battle Beast and Thragg! 8 out of 12
Oh Boy this fight is so epic. The Art the panels the opponents the way it’s implemented into the main plot the way it sets up the final antagonist. Everything about this fight is so great it’s one of my favorites in the series. I also really liked to see more of invicibles private life with his family and seeing more of talescria was delightful as well.
We are getting close to the end of all things.
Invincible is the best superhero comic book in the universe.
Mark faces the challenges of being a superhero dad with the inevitable conflicts between being present for his daughter and saving the universe. The graphics as always are extraordinary and the action non-stop! Love Invincible, just sad that there are only 4 more volumes to go...
Okay but how cool is Battle Beast? I've loved him ever since his appearance on the show (before I read the comics). Also, Thragg is a fuckboy first class. It was dumb of Nolan to let him go...
And also, seeing no one show up for Cecil's funeral (except for Mark and Eve) broke my heart...
The rest of the volume is basically just Mark and Eve getting used to their new home Telescria. Interesting stuff to be honest... and Terra is so cute!

This one was cool as we focus on the battle between Battle Beast and Thragg whose reproducing so many kids on the planet where Oliver is from and then there is the deal with Rex as he has taken over the world and made it better and its cool to see and so Mark and Eve leave the planet and go to Talescria but there are quite a few things happening with the resistance but Mark trying to adjust to his life on another planet, seeing weird alien things and cultures which are just disgusting tbh but then again they chose this life and a meeting with Allen and oliver until he is recruited to find Thragg and stop him. The series is building up to an end and it will be fun to read that.
Invincible Vol. 21 Modern Family collects issues 115-120 of the series written by Robert Kirkman with art by Ryan Ottley.
With Rex/Robot having taken control of Earth, Mark and Eve have decide to live offworld. Meanwhile Battle Beast has an epic battle versuses Thragg.
Getting back into the final volumes of Invincible. This series has been so much fun with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Robert Kirkman may be one of the best authors out there in keeping ongoing series so consistent for so long. The art in this volume didn't seem has crisp as in previous issues. I'm not sure if was a different inking style but the lines just didn't seem as sharp.
Eh niente, sempre meglio.
man these last couple of volumes have been SO GOOD. I'm so close to finishing this series and I'm sad to see it end. And scared to find out what will happen.
Things move forward in the invincible universe after the last volumes dynamic shift in the status quo. And while Mark tries to deal with it, the secondary story is an absolutely epic battle that goes on for multiple issues between the exiled Viltrumite leader and Battle Beast.
A great story with alot of personal moments in this one. From Marks decision to leave home with his family, to his confession to Eve, to Battle Beast's lover finally breaking down, its amazing to see Kirkman weave his way through the characters. I suspect that at this point, the story is kind of writing itself so to speak as it appears to be absolutely natural and seemingly done with ease. The reality is probably far more methodical and thoughtout but as with any great art and artist, it appears easy to us mere mortals.
Ottleys art is incredible once again, especially when showing the battle with Battle Beast. And the last page... explosive.
Holy shit this is one of the best volumes when it comes down to the fights. Thragg vs Battle Beast is almost as good as Invincible vs Conquest and my only problem with it is that it's not nearly as long enough as I wanted it to be. Still, very awesome.
A few pages of the biggest fight in the series scattered through a lot of home/baby drama? It's so weird it feels like it must be an artistic choice, but I don't see what purpose it serves.
Oh this series. Another excellent installment. Of course, it kind of goes without saying that volume 21 isn't the best jumping on point for new readers, but it does serve as another reminder for people who are interested to go back to the beginning and follow the whole series. It's a rare book that has had a consistent creative team for all these years, meaning a consistent thinking behind these characters.
These characters have all evolved so much since the beginning. And they keep tackling the hard topics that a lot of more mainstream superhero books avoid. There are some nice meta moments, like when Mark stops into his old comic book store to pick up his backlogged pull list. There are a lot of very heavy themes that they explore and, I think, they mostly do a pretty decent job of it. They continue the rape storyline and exploring how it affects a survivor and their family. They look at sexist ideas and gender norms, and then decide to flip that on its head. They even manage to work in breastfeeding and how ridiculous it is that people get so offended by it.
All at the same time continuing to move these characters along their lives and make you care about all of them. You even get some throwbacks to check in with old regulars who done get the same amount of time on panel, like William and Rick and even Amber.
The art is mostly pretty good, but Ryan Ottley's style has definitely become more...stylized? Unique? His faces sometimes look like caricatures. And I'll never not notice his lack of actual backgrounds now, not that it really detracts much. They still do the fun little extras section at the end to look at the covers with some commentary and some commission work. It's not as fun as it used to be, more like they just need to say something rather than talking about the actual creative process. Still cute.
This is an excellent installment in a top notch series. If you have any passing interest in the book, do yourself a favor and go back to start from the beginning.
Barely even a superhero book anymore - but in reality, you wouldn't get decades of essentially the same slugfests, would you? A point openly addressed in one particularly meta scene here. Instead, the travails of parenting - particularly on an alien world - and the ethics of a covert tyranny that's also something close to utopia. I'm glad there are still other comics playing out variations on the endlessly fascinating superhero theme, but also love the path this one is forging instead.
For a low-action volume, this was actually really engaging work. Well, relatively low-action at least. That Battle Beast vs. Thragg stuff was very DBZ. Mark and Eve tackle the challenges of parenthood and leave Earth behind after the hard-to-stomach events of volume twenty. Sometimes, it's nice just to watch characters you've known for a while live their lives, and learn how to be a family. We'll see if it lasts.
Finally had time to start and finish a book I own since I've completed a good amount of public library books of late. This title is still fresh, excellent, and introduces lots of exciting, interesting twists not found in superhero titles by the Big Two.
Moving on from the bursting intestine spreads into detached eyeball territory. Viltrumites are forever raising the bar on brawling. Glad to see that Mark and Eve finally have a bouncing baby girl. Things, as always, are ever evolving, ever interesting.
