Ava Kingsley and Seth Walker might be the most unlikely friends ever. The only thing these two polar opposites have in common is a knack for wordsmithing. Back in college, they were known for their written sparring in the campus newspaper's popular "He Says/She Says" column.
At their ten-year college reunion, they pick up right where they left off. Except this time their squabbling leads to a surprising turn: friendship and a year-long exchange of emails. So when Ava approaches a crossroads in her athletics department career in Minnesota, Seth is quick to offer the open apartment above the restaurant he's been remodeling in Maple Valley, Iowa.
Ava doesn't know where her career will lead her next, but she's starting to suspect she might see Seth as more than a pen pal. Which would be exciting...except for the fact that he only sees her as a friend.
As Maple Valley grows on her, Ava wonders if there might be something here for her even though Seth is unavailable. And maybe, just maybe, after all the words the two of them have exchanged over the years, they'll finally be able to say the three that matter most.
Three Little Words is an e-only novella that gives an exciting introduction to Melissa Tagg's new series about the charismatic Walker family and the endearing town of Maple Valley!

I was glad that this book was short, because I found it pretty boring. I wanted more romance, and instead I got random conversations about missing chairs and broken dishwashers. The emails between the main characters were similarly dull, I really did not care about whether Ava got to be a football coach or not, and generally found this pretty uninteresting.
And the three little words at the ending were pretty predictable. I’m pretty sure anybody can guess what they were. 5 out of 10
What a good book! It's short (only 133 pages), but it didn't seem short or rushed in any way, like most novellas do.
It really is a great book. And I absolutely loved the characters! Can't wait to read more about this family and "get to know them". I have a feeling I'm gonna love them! :)
Oh my word . . . Where has this been all my life? This is pretty much my ideal contemporary romance!
-Friendship to romance? Check! -Blissfully devoid of all the touchy-feely stuff and physical attraction? Check! -Colorful and unique characters? Check! -No love triangle? Wellll, it was a good love triangle anyway, so I'm going to say check. ;)
Right away I completely fell in love with these precious characters! They were all so unique and quirky and REAL. Seth is just your average dude taking life one step at a time, and Ava is just your average gal who is rather confused about what she wants her life to look like, but is about to find out.
And the ending . . . *muffled squealing* Yeah, I can't talk about it because of spoilers, but it was so fabulous and perfect!
I highly, highly recommend this if you are looking for a sweet, clean, adorable contemporary romance!
If a book 1) is highly recommended by friends, 2) looks super cute, and 3) is free on Amazon, you bet I’m gonna snap it up in a heartbeat. This sweet novella certainly did not disappoint!
I loved how the book was built around a friendship (a rocky, sparring fest one at that!). Even when the characters quit fighting as much, they still didn’t lose the small element that made their dynamic hilarious. The town sounded soooo adorable!! I also really enjoyed hearing about Seth’s remodel of the diner, and I think I could probably have read an entire book just about that. (Okay, maybe not, but it was cool.) One of the biggest things I enjoyed about this, though, was how honorable Seth was with . High five the man! Also, Uncle Case was the bomb. And the end! *tries not to fangirl* *fails miserably* Could it get any cuter?
Just a note, there were a couple awkward bits , but not a ton which was nice. ;) Also, don’t let the rather contrived feeling beginning turn you off. ;)
Best quote: “Man, all those years in college we didn’t get along, I could’ve just given you a pie and, bam, new best friend.”
Altogether, this was a sweet read. ;) Also, one of the characters drank chai tea, which I highly applaud.
This is a wonderful novella, and I don't say that lightly. Usually I find them rushed and abrupt, and they leave me feeling unfulfilled, but that was not the case with Three Little Words. With a sweet setting and realistic family, I loved this glimpse into the Walker family and their hometown, Maple Valley. Seth and Ava are endearing characters, and I was rooting for them the whole time. Lovely little introduction to the Walker Family series!
Ava Kingsley and Seth Walker never got along with each other in the past. They even had a column in the campus newspaper of their university that became popular because of their sparring. After ten years, they meet again at a college reunion and oddly they decide to keep in touch. One year later (and more than 1400 emails later), they call themselves friends. But is “friendship” the right term to define their relationship? Will they be able to see what they really are?
I usually never give five stars to short stories. Because even when I love them a lot, there is always something that leaves me wanting more. Though in this case I could not give less than a five. It would not have been right because this story was wonderful and did not feel rushed at all as it often happens with novellas. “Three Little Words” (a prequel to “A Walker Family” series) was romantic, thought-provoking and simply delightful. I love Melissa Tagg and I love her stories. Her characters are always so easy to relate to, and their lives are special because she makes them special thanks to her way to tell us what people experience and feel. Every time I read one of her books I feel a part of it and I love it!
I recommend this short story to everyone because it is splendid, really. You will all fall in love with Seth and Ava, and you will definitely want to visit Maple Valley. I do! And I am so looking forward to the first book of this new series by Ms. Tagg!

It didn’t feel short and rushed like most novellas, which was nice. I really liked how it connects the authors two series together! :)
*BFCG may (Read the review to see) recommend this book by this author. It does not mean I recommend all the books by this author.
I loved this novella! It was such a sweet, fun, and clean read! The romance was great and I really loved the way the book ended.
For being a novella, it did NOT seem rushed or like that short of a read. There was so much to this story (the emails, banter between Seth and Ava, the new restaurant, and more), that it made me anxious to keep reading and sad to finish the last page. I can hardly wait to read the next book set in Maple Valley, Iowa!!
I recommend Three Little Words if you enjoy contemporary romance that is clean and has great characters!
After reading several books that had more details of kiss and interests than I enjoyed, this was a refreshing read. It didn't even feel like a romance until almost the end. The town sounded charming, the restaurant delightful, and the characters sweet. I'm eager to read more about these characters and to try another book by this author.
This novella needs to be a Hallmark movie. It was so cute!! I absolutely adored Ava and Seth. They were too cute, and I loved their banter. I fell in love with Maple Valley,Iowa. I loved the small town atmosphere. I was so excited to see that Autumn and Blake have their own book in another series as well. So,I’ll have to check their book out too. Also, that ending was too cute! This was my first book by Melissa Tagg, and it won’t be my last. I highly recommend this book.
I loved this fun novella! Three Little Words has well-developed characters and a relationship between the hero and heroine of the story that just makes sense. It is also a novella that felt complete, not rushed in any way. I love when an author can pull that off!
For readers who are familiar with Melissa Tagg’s books, you will be happy to know that this free novella is the beginning of her new Walker Family series, but also provides a bridge back to her first series, Where Love Begins. The main character, Ava, is the bridge between the two series. And if you have not read the other two books in the first series, that’s ok, this novella can stand on its own just fine.
I simply devoured this book from start to finish. It is clear to me that this is going to be the start of a very enjoyable series, set in a wonderful and quaint small town in Iowa. Both Ava and Seth are great characters that I was able to connect with immediately in this story. If you are a fan of contemporary fiction, I definitely recommend getting started with this new series.
I just finished reading a classic adventure with a character by the name of Tagg, and somehow that got me in the mood for a contemporary written by Melissa Tagg! This one's been on my TBR list the longest, and I dove right in.
This story kinda bridges the gap between Tagg's two series, with characters from both. I loved Seth and Ava! Their story is so sweet. And I seriously want to go eat at that restaurant...
“Sometimes we have to let history rest to make way for what’s coming next.” - Three Little Words, by Melissa Tagg
After being turned down for her dream job, Ava Kingsley struggles to understand how to let her history rest in order to give God room to put her future into place. When her email buddy and old college classmate, Seth Walker, invites her to stay in the empty apartment over the restaurant he’s opening in his hometown, will she see this opportunity as an open door to a new dream or just a pit stop along the way? Will these two friends debate their way into a romance or go after their individual dreams?
Well, Melissa Tagg did it again. Her trademark comedic timing in a sweet story about small-town love and big dreams translated so perfectly in her first novella ever. I’m really looking forward to seeing more of these e-shorts from her.
One of my favorite things about Three Little Words is how Ava Kingsley and Seth Walker started out as enemies, debating through their college newspaper, but over time, their enmity morphed into a friendship they both treasured greatly. That journey serves as a great reminder that not only do our relationships change and grow through the years, but we also can learn and improve ourselves along the way. Life if a journey to enjoy and improving on my faults is part of it I’ve learned to appreciate more and more over the years. The sense of accomplishment is neat, but what I really love is when I’m able to use my past experience and difficult life lessons to encourage other people who may be struggling to make it through a challenging time in their lives. This book, Three Little Words, reminded me that encouraging others in this way is meaningful for both the person being encouraged and the one offering encouragement. And while reading this novella, I experienced both sides of that situation, which helped the lesson to soak into my bones even better. As I’ve learned, that’s the way God works with me. He brings in multiple sources to show me the things He’s trying to teach me. It’s my job to open my eyes, take it all in, and then thank Him for yet another opportunity to become an even better version of myself.

Really cute and super clean! Tagg is a fantastic author. This novella was really well done, did not feel rushed, and kinda reminded me of a Hallmark movie. ;) Recommended!
This novella is perfect. I finished reading it on such a rush of warm fuzzies, I seriously contemplated posting a review consisting of just those four little words. However, since I find those kinds of reviews annoyingly unhelpful, I figured I had better say a little more.
I am not generally a novella reader. As someone who likes to submerge themselves into the world of whatever novel I am reading I usually find a novella leaves something to be desired. There's not that much time to get to know the characters and the backstory, so you don't become as invested in whatever conflict is playing out - indeed, there's not much time for conflict to develop at all, which often results in a lot more telling than showing in order to set up the novella - and disengagement's downward spiral continues from there.
Not so with this novella. We get a peek at where Seth and Ava started from in the opening chapter - seven years after their not-quite-enemies-but-not-quite-friends rivalry from school - then we skip forward one year and 1,473 emails later, during which time a long-distance friendship has developed. The bulk of the novella then follows the development of their relationship when Ava comes to to Maple Valley, Iowa, for the opening of Seth's new restaurant. Both Ava and Seth have reached something of a crossroads in their own lives, and have to work out which goals are worth striving for, and which goals are actually weighing them down.
The characters were well drawn, the action well-paced and unhindered by extensive inner monologues or tedious backstory info dumps. It was refreshing to read a romance where the relationship between the main characters had such a sweet, natural development, but where the circumstances surrounding the characters still created enough tension to keep me invested in the outcome. And the ending... *sigh*. I admit my own stomach did little flip-flops at that, in a totally good way! It was just perfect.
If you're looking for a quick, clean, satisfying romance, then look no further.
Loved this novella. Was my first read by Melissa Tagg, but won't be my last!
Update: On my second read-through, I still really enjoyed it, but was disappointed to discover the Lord's name used in vain. (Don't know how I missed that on the first reading!) So, one star has been duly dropped from the rating.
Favourite Quotes:
~ “Sometimes we have to let history rest to make way for what’s coming next.”
~ “You can’t let the thought of what other people expect be your compass.”
~ “If it’s love, there’s no such thing as too busy. Only too slow or too stupid.”
~ “There’s a lot of freedom in letting go. But then, there’s times when we need to hold on, too. Guess that’s one of the keys in life. Knowing when to hold on, when to let go.”
~ “But as much as life is sometimes about knowing what you want and going after it and finishing, maybe other times it’s about slowing down and shutting up and waiting. There’s not always a clear beginning and obvious end. Sometimes we’re in the middle . . . and it’s okay to camp out there for a while.”
~ She’d learned to let go and to be okay with what came next. Maybe even okay with not knowing what came next.
Awww such a cute novella!! I loved it, and like many others are saying, I didn't feel like it was rushed at all. (Although I would have totally read a whole novel with Ava and Seth). I am looking forward to reading the Walker Family Series and seeing how all the characters tie together! :) 4 stars!!
"Three Little Words" is my first read by Melissa Tagg. I absolutely loved everything about this novella. For a story that is short, so much happened. The story felt very full. The character development was really fascinating. I enjoyed my time in Maple Valley. I would like to sit and dine at "The Red Door." The food descriptions were delicious, and the descriptions of the atmosphere were relaxing. It was humorous visualizing the unfinished apartment upstairs, and the times spent fixing it up. I really like Melissa Tagg's humor. I chuckled through the beginning of the story, and as I continued reading, there were some laugh-out-loud moments for me as well.
"Three Little Words" has definitely become a favorite friends to romance story. I thought it was hilarious how Seth and Ava carried their debating tendencies from their rival days, into their friendship and romance. The random and insignificant topics they chose to discuss at length, made me smile. I felt the emotional pull as Seth and Ava found their way to each other's hearts. Their internal dialogues were excellent! In the mix, Melissa threw in an unexpected swoosh that turned Maple Valley topsy-turvy! It was an unfortunate event that added thrill to the plot, and made the sweetest romance, a dozen times sweeter! The end of the story was so uniquely sweet and satisfying. Sighs, swoons and squeals, from havin' all the feels! "Send it" "What?" "Right now? But you already-" "Just send it." I don't think I will ever get over that ending! Super cute! ❤️❤️❤️
Somebody help. I think I'm in love with the Walker family. :)
I loved getting to see where Seth's story begins. This story isn't long at all but its like reading a full length novel anyway it's so well put together. I liked Ava in From the Start but I really loved her after this novella. She's great. And she and Seth are just too adorable for words. Like seriously, I might become a convert to contemporary romance. Or at least all of Melissa Tagg's books. :) Go read them.
I absolutely loved this story. Melissa Tagg did a great job grabbing my interest, connecting me with the characters, and engaging my heart. The ending was perfect and I will add this book to my rereads.
I loved this sweet novella! Best of all, Bethany House is releasing it for FREE! See my review and find the links to download this amazing story here: http://faithlovebooks.blogspot.com/20...
