cast: 3M, 1W. Illiterate but likable, Bobby Reyburn is a funny young guy who loves to do impressions. He's also a member of the Aryan nation, a racist predator convicted of a horrific crime. John Brennan is educated and arrogant, a serious writer who may only be guilty of doing society a favor. As each awaits his fate, one evokes sympathy, the other derision. In vivid scenes, COYOTE ON A FENCE explores the disturbing question: Can one be innocent though proven guilty? This penetrating new drama offers no clear verdict, just utterly compelling theatre.
In all honesty, it was a 3-star read—more preachy than I’d expected from Graham—but it has a 5-star, mind-blowing ending. So, I averaged between 3 and 5. Would like to see it performed.
A 3 man, 1 woman show about life and death and prison. Hatred and compassion. Redemption. Someday I hope to be old enough to play the character of Shawna, but I don't know if I will ever be able to have enough grit.
This play makes us question not only the death penalty, but the life that prison creates and if that serves justice.
A short but entertaining play... I'm not sure how long it'll sit with me, mostly because the story is so concise and to-the-point that I barely had a chance to sit with it after I was finished, but the writing is great and the characters of John Brennan and Bobby Reyburn were fantastic.
