En Fiscalidad voluntaria y responsabilidad ciudadana, Peter Sloterdijk explica su provocadora tesis según la cual en una sociedad democrática la recaudación obligatoria de impuestos habría de ser transformada en donativos voluntarios de los ciudadanos a la comunidad. El autor propone la renovación del sistema fiscal como una de las vías para liberar al ciudadano del carácter fantasmal que ha adquirido en la democracia actual. Solo cuando el ciudadano deje de considerarse a sí mismo como deudor y actúe como un orgulloso contribuyente estaremos ante una democracia de verdad participativa, donde los políticos estarían al menos algo más obligados a responder ante las exigencias de los ciudadanos. No se trata de la llamada a una bajada de impuestos, sino de «la intensificación y reavivación éticas de los impuestos como donaciones del ciudadano a la comunidad». A veces se olvida que voluntariedad no conlleva merma o supresión. Sloterdijk nos invita en esta obra a despojarnos del pesimismo que corroe aquella idea que entiende la coacción como el único camino, y apuesta por la posibilidad de un ciudadano moralmente elevado.

Peter Sloterdijk studied philosophy, Germanistics and history at the University of Munich. In 1975 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg. Since 1980 he has published many philosophical works, including the Critique of Cynical Reason. In 2001 he was named president of the State Academy of Design, part of the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. In 2002 he began to co-host Das Philosophische Quartett, a show on the German ZDF television channel devoted to discussing key issues affecting present-day society.
The Kritik der Zynischen Vernunft (Critique of Cynical Reason), published by Suhrkamp in 1983, became the best-selling philosophical book in the German language since the Second World War and launched Sloterdijk's career as an author.
The trilogy Spheres is the philosopher's magnum opus. The first volume was published in 1998, the second in 1999, and the last in 2004.
