Jake Myers stopped living the day she cheated death. A traumatic incident in her past has convinced her to stop planning for the future and focus on the present. Working as a lobster boat captain in Portland, Maine, keeps Jake’s mind occupied, but her psyche remains scarred. Can an inexperienced greenhorn help her find the healing she so desperately needs?
Shy Silva is content to hang out with her friends on the gritty streets of South Boston. Then her family steps in. When Shy’s uncle sends her to Portland to escape her friends’ influence, will his actions provide her the distance she needs to break not only her friends’ hold on her but her family’s restrictive rules as well?
Yolanda Wallace is not a professional writer, but she plays one in her spare time. She has written seven novels, and her short stories have appeared in multiple anthologies. She and her partner live in beautiful coastal Georgia, where they are parents to four children of the four-legged variety — a boxer and three cats.
Yolanda Wallace also writes under the pen name Mason Dixon.
This is a nice slow burn love story. The characters are interesting, although Jake is harder to get a read on because the 'secret' she's keeping isn't revealed until about the 3/4 mark. Shy's relationship with Lucy also drags the story down at the mid point, it's also the only part of the story that feels contrived. There's no real major drama in the story, the relationship unfolds at a believable pace, and the unusual setting provides some interest. A nice solid read. 3.5 stars.
I had trouble deciding between 3 or 3 1/2 Stars. This book was well written as I find Yolanda Wallace's books to be. Plus I loved the Maine setting and the lobster fishing. Unfortunately, there was just something about this book that I didn't connect to as well as her others. I had trouble with Shy's character, she was really immature to me. She acted more like an 18 year old than mid twenty's. There was also something about the main romance that just did not connect with me. Even dealing with her past trauma, Jake was a likeable hard-working, successful woman. While Shy proved worth in her job and grew as the book continued, I just didn't really feel the spark between them. Like I said the concept, Main lobster fisher-women, was enjoyable so maybe others would like this more than I did.
I typically love Yolanda’s books but this is my least favorite thus far. Shy has the maturity of a teenager while Jake seems an old soul trapped in a 28 year old body. The story just didn’t click for me, but of course I will continue to read this author’s books.
I really enjoy this author's work but there was a disconnect for me between the main characters and the romance. I did love the setting and the fishing (would have loved more!).
This is gonna be a contradiction but stick with me. I enjoyed how the author built up the relationship between the two leads. But I still feel like the jump to sex was really sudden/abrupt. The end "solution" also felt very sudden; a character changed their mind without any reason or explanation. 1 of 3 on my romance scale; didn't move me.
The two main characters Shy and Jake were brought together for a fishing season both having something to prove. They came from different backgrounds and had different issues to work through but found an instant connection and worked well together. I felt the story moved at a good pace which made it difficult to put the book down.
As someone who has not read many books on fishing and doesn't have any knowledge of it I found Yolanda Wallace did a fantastic job in explaining this aspect of the book for those who had little knowledge on the topic.
I thought Yolanda had a great variety of issues that were always going to put up barriers for their relationship. Not only did they both have an employee boss relationship that is always off limits but Shy having family restrictions with who she should date. Jake had a lot of baggage from her past that made her reluctant to be involved in a relationship. I thought this made the read more interesting than having just one major issue.
There are a few aspects of the book that didn't hit the mark for me which made it as a good book instead of an excellent book. The first was, at the start I found it difficult to understand how Shy who was described as a trouble maker and partier went to Portland fairly easily. I personally felt like there should have been a more significant reason to push her to want to make a change. She just seemed to make the change too easily and wanted to prove herself after she previously hadn't tried.
The other thing was the emotion in the book. I felt the emotion the characters were going through could have been described better. I didn't feel the characters emotions as much as I could have.
In saying those two things they most definitely didn't ruin the book for me, it just would have taken it to the next level for me. I highly recommend this read as I felt it was really well done and a very enjoyable read.
I also really liked the ending, thought it was sweet.
I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review.
Love’s Bounty is the story of Shy Silva and Jake Myers. Shy has spent the last years getting in and out of trouble. Thus, her uncle sends her to Portland, Maine, to crew for a lobster boat owned by Jake. The job is a tough one, but Shy is determined to make things work, getting rid of the friends her family dislike so much and are convinced are a bad influence. Jake is fleeing a bad accident in the past, which almost killed her, and hoping to begin living in the here and now. These two unlikely characters join together to pull through these difficult times in their lives, hoping for the best on the far side. This is a good book about surviving the hardships life sends you. However, I guess I need to read the descriptions of the books I request more completely because I did not know that this was a lesbian romance book when I requested it. This fact was not included in the book blurb, though I think it should have been, but was listed beside the book with other publisher information. This made reading it more difficult for me, as I prefer not to read that genre. I was fascinated by the Maine setting and the lobster boat job Shy was getting as well as by the fact that Jake operated her own boat, working in a largely male-oriented occupation and also within a somewhat conservative environment. However, these do not deter Jake or hold her back. I found the descriptions of Maine and the lobster boat work interesting and enjoyable and, as far as I could tell (I have read other books about lobster fishing), true to form. The genre of the book was the only part that held me back. This is a good book to read, if this genre des not bother you. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
A solid if unexceptional f/f romance, set in a fishing community in Maine. Mid-20s Shy Silva has been hanging out with people her Portuguese South Boston family doesn't think are providing the right influence, and ship her off to work with a fishing boat captain in Maine. Shy works hard to prove herself to Jake Myers, the boat captain. The two develop a friendship, then an attraction, then begin an affair. But will the trauma from Jake's past, or Shy's family's prejudices against non-Portuguese romantic interests, make the affair as short as the Maine fishing season?
I wasn't aware of a strong Portuguese immigrant presence in South Boston, which made Shy's story intriguing to me. But Shy as a character was rather immature for her age, while Jake's trauma, and recovery from same, unfolded rather predictably. Again, a pleasant, if not entirely memorable, romance.
This was a romantic love story about two strong women, both with different backgrounds. They both must find their way back. They have a lot to learn and they learn from each other. Their relationship developed slowly but not without all kinds of bumps on the road. Family also plays an important role. A role that can mean the end of their relationship. The environment is very vividly described. You can imagine yourself there and I think it's a beautiful place. I like Jake, Shy and their friends. From the beginning to the end, I enjoyed this book very much and I recommend it highly.
