Everyone has that one person who leaves an imprint on their heart.

Earlier this year I read this novella called Tangled in Laces by Toni Aleo and I was hooked on Karson and Lacey’s story. I was dying to find out what happened to these two. I was so excited to finally read Laces and Lace! Toni Aleo has this writing style that I completely adore. Her Assassin’s series is one of those series where every single book has been a winner for me, and this was no exception.

Nine years ago, Karson King and Lacey Martin fell in love. They found that once in a life time, real deal love at a young age. And they both thought nothing could ever tear them apart, that they would be together forever…

 photo 67a013db-b077-490f-927b-8af18b3754d1_zps845ff0cc.jpg
When they were together for those three glorious months, he cherished her like the Stanley cup. Yeah, it was short, but it was perfect. She was it to him. She was everything.

But things happened, choices were made, and in the end, the three months of bliss is now only a memory. Karson is following his dream, playing pro hockey with the Assassin’s. Lacey is doing what she always wanted to do. Owning her own business and helping breast cancer survivors like herself. Even though they’re both extremely happy with where they are professionally, somethings missing. Something has always been missing. When you find that one true love of your life, it’s hard to get past it. It’s hard to let anyone else fill that spot in your heart. And neither one of them has.

Even with a brother who is a professional hockey player, Lacey has managed to avoid seeing Karson for the last 9 years. Then one night it happens, they run into each other. That pull they’ve always felt, it’s still there. The connection, the chemistry, none of it has gone away after all this time. Karson knows when he first sees Lacey that she’s still it for him. And Lacey knows that Karson still has that place in her heart. He always has and always will.

 photo 4f7f07fd-9991-4001-9402-7040ffcd74bc_zps258150fa.jpg

One night together after all those years, and it’s like they still fit, still belong together.

What would you do if you had a second chance at your first love? Would you embrace it, fight for it? Things are not easy for Karson and Lacey. If they want to try to make a go of it, they know they have a fight ahead of them. They live in different cities, they both have important jobs, her family is a giant obstacle as well. But some loves are worth fighting for…
“I believed it then, I believe it now. We are soul mates, Karson. We are meant to be together, and together we are complete.”

 photo c03eb487-3796-492a-8c5d-7df8934d2e4c_zps4a3121af.jpg

Karson King. He is one of Toni’s amazing boys! Swoony, sexy and sweet. There is no way you won't love this guy! Lacey I had mixed feelings about. I liked her a lot of the book, but there are some moments I had issues with her. Not to say I didn’t understand … Nate and Rachel. I can’t even talk about those two. Karson's family was incredible! And there was one character that was new and I absolutely loved! His name is JT and he is an animal- but so so funny! I really hope we get a book for him! I can’t even imagine what it would be like to read an entire JT book but I want to!

Laces and Lace is a heartwarming, sweet and sexy story about true love, about giving second chances and overcoming all obstacles to be happy with the one you love. Lacey and Karson’s journey wasn’t easy, but most things really worth it aren’t. Toni’s writing is top notch as always. There was tons of steam, some humor and lots of love. I enjoyed this one a lot and am looking forward to more Assassin’s books in the future!

Karson and Lacey were completely in love once. But “circumstances” forced Karson to leave her behind and chase his dreams of becoming a NHL player. He swore that he if had another chance he would never let her go. Now, nine years later, a fateful night gave him his second chance to get her back and this time he actually didn’t let her go. But the problems that set them apart the first time are stronger than ever, and they risk realizing that some things are not always meant to be.

description

Okay, first let me start with Karson. He was an amazing guy. He fought for her girl, for their love and he fought against everything without hesitate a second and to be real… many times without Lacey deserving it.

description

Then, let me get to Lacey. And let me start by saying this:

description

If there was a prize for annoying heroines, Toni Aleo, or at least this series would take the prize. There wasn’t a single one that I didn’t want to beat some sense into their heads and Lacey was probably the worst of them all. I loved how strong and fierce she was in the beginning. But then she had a personality transplant and became a resentful little bitch that didn’t deserve half the man she was married with did for her.

description

I debated a little before deciding give this one 4 stars. The book was too long and that wouldn’t have been a problem if it was equally development, but it wasn’t. Basically it was family drama followed by family drama the entire time. Same old, same old.
But in the end, I loved the hero, I love this series and this made me smile and gave me butterflies, not to mention it was steamy as hell. And that’s what matters. So, if you love romance and sexy hockey players in the same book, this series are a great choice.

FOUR SECOND CHANCE STARS.

"He was worth it. Because he was it. Her forever."

Mrs Toni also what did you do to my heart? You took my feelings on a roller coaster ride with this latest Assassins instalment and what a journey. I have to say readers that I thought Toni pulled it out of the bag when it comes to the emotions in this book and of course you don't need to be disappointed because as usual MrsA more than delivers with her trademark off the charts steamy McDreamy loving. Yes once again this author has delivered a novel of fantastic proportion and although I can't names Laces and Lace as my favourite it was definitely ticking some Lisa happy boxes. Steamy, heart wrenching and a whole lot of sweaty hockey players made for one enjoyable read and I'm excited to see the series continue.

What's it all about?
A second chance at love story that has more difficulties than these characters could ever have dreamed of. Will their love stand the test of a broken past and an even more challenging future? Nine years on and with heartbreak still at the forefront Karson and Lacey once again cross paths, but this time it seems like it's more than just insecurities in the way. Are they able to move past what has held them apart all these years or will they allow circumstances to destroy what could be a a love that they both deserve. Once again Toni Aleo takes her readers on a journey of heart and healing as we read the next in her assassins series. Readers prepare to fall in love with a couple that have to fight to survive if they are to succeed in their own happy ever after.

description

What did I love?
I think for those who know my reading tastes it goes without saying that a sweaty sports related hockey romance is one of my favourite tropes to read about and in my opinion Toni aleo is the queen of all things hockey romance related. Every single time this author releases a new book in the assassins series I am always eager to dive in to see what she will deliver and for the most part Toni Aleo hits the romance jackpot every time she releases one of her books. 'Laces and Lace' is a brilliant mix of second chance at love and newfound passion. It also has an element of heart break and real life issues that added a depth to the writing which I appreciated. Laces and lace is definitely a book that is sweet, sexy and overall I was once again captured up in the world of assassins. One thing that you can't deny is that Mrs Aleo knows how to write heroes that are easy to fall in love with. Karson king was a dream he brings the sweet and sexy and I thoroughly enjoyed 'getting to know' Mr King and all his gorgeous hockey star ways. However I was a little love lost for the heroine, Lacey although not all bad she made questionable decisions in the book that made me squirm somewhat. Overall I can't ever deny that I'm always 100% gaga over Toni Aleo she is an author that I'll always follow and adore and I can already predict that I'll be falling head over high heels in love with JT a character that we meet in Laces and Lace and it may be worth mentioning to fans of the series that I've already claimed this fictional bad boy as all mine ... Bring on that story is all I have left to say.

description

Why not five?
Normally I will lean towards books that are easy to read and low on the heartache and Laces and Lace has more than it's fair share of ups and downs. Toni certainly deals with the subject matter in a way that is sensitive and full of heart, it's just a personal preference that I steer clear from tear jerkers. In addition I hate to admit this but Lacey drove me insane in parts and sadly when a character pulls out negative feelings whilst I'm reading a book it can definitely but a damper on my enjoyment. All in all I enjoyed my time spent with Laces and Lace there were just a few niggles that I had with the overall storyline and heroine.

Final thoughts ...
Without a doubt Toni Aleo always manages to hold my absolute attention. Her assassins novels are by far one of my favourite long standing series. Each character and romance always brings something new to the table and I'm most assuredly always looking forward to the next release. My only fear is the day when Mrs Aleo puts this series to bed and to be quite honest I can't quite bring myself to think about that just yet. As for 'Laces and Lace' although not my favourite of the assassins series it certainly brings home the reality of surviving hardships and life's difficulties and for that I applaud Mrs Aleo. Laces and Lace follows on from it's prequel 'Tangled in the laces' and a follow up that is not to be missed if you have already met Lacey and Karson. And if you've not yet started the Assassins series what are you waiting for? Hot hockey players and even schmexier romance, yes it's that good so don't delay adding to your to be read pile. This book is ready for you to one click today ... Enjoy. Kisses.

Disclaimer: I should preface this "review" by saying that I read this right on the heels of Nine Minutes, which is perhaps my favorite book of 2014. With that said, that might have affected my experience with Laces and Lace. The below review is my current opinion, although perhaps I'll attempt a re-read at a later date. Or perhaps not, you never know...

This is a very, very sad day...DNF @ 30%

description

I honestly can't believe this. I can't believe I am DNF-ing an Aleo hockey romance.

I love Toni Aleo.

I love The Assassins Series.

I love her characters and stories.

I loved the prequel to this,Tangled in the Laces.

I loved Lacey and Karson and couldn't wait to get the rest of their story.

Now, I don't want to be intentionally cruel but...

What the fuck happened?!

It's like I was reading a completely different story, by a completely different author, about completely different characters!

In the prequel, Lacey was a kickass breast Cancer survivor with confidence and some attitude. In this?

description

She was so insecure, so wishy washy, and soooooooo unattractively desperate I was repulsed.

description

I mean, good grief, you are a self-made business woman, who started her own successful company from the ground up, beat breast Cancer and got some badass tattoos. Buck the fuck up!

Lacey was so sensitive, so emotional, and so embarrassingly desperate that I seriously wanted to kick her ass.

description

And don't even get me started on her best friend, Rachel.

What. A. Bitch.

description

No wonder Lacey has the spine of milk toast and the confidence of a gnat.

A more pushy, judgmental, opinionated asshat I have not encountered.

And what the hell with Lacey's father and brother.

I saw the writing the on the wall that there are some really irritating asshole family shenanigans about to be afoot and, quite honestly, I don't have the patience to hem and haw over that crap for hundreds more pages, not to mention the sugar rush from all gushing going on between Karson and Lacey.

⭐️ 1 STAR ⭐️
I really thought this book and I will connect. At least I had hopes we would.
I enjoyed the first books in this series and thought maybe it was time to reconnect with it. (I skipped the last couple releases)

The heroine is a breast cancer survivor,—like me— and I'm always curious to read about tough and empowered heroines in my romance books, so the least I can do is applaud the author for her choice to feature one and approaching the subject.
As a matter of fact, I grabbed this paperback at a book signing where I met the author. I was actually eager to get to it, but not too much, sometimes you just want space between you and cancer—even in a book.

If I learned one thing during my 3 times fighting cancer and meeting with other women chatting about our diverse experiences, is that fighting and surviving cancer is tough. Overcoming it is not easy, life takes a new meaning to you, your perception of what's important or not is forever altered. But life GOES ON and it doesn't have to be nasty and gloomy. Personally, I became more aware of my chances and try to enjoy the smallest things but man, I'm still as cynical and sarcastic as ever! lol

Yet in this book, I just couldn't get past the way the author portrayed some aspects of living through breast cancer treatments. Everything felt WRONG to me.
I'm very well aware that we all have our own personal hang-ups about disease and not everyone will live through it the same way. Yet, I just couldn't accept the heroine's attitude. She deserved the award of the most annoying heroine I've read this year—if not ever— and thought her portrayal was a disservice to any woman who lived through or still battling cancer. Personally I felt outraged and upset by her rather than sorry and compassionate for her. Whiney, sickly insecure, naive to the extreme, blind to her surroundings... Simple-minded doesn't even cover her personality.

Furthermore, the whole book basked in this Jerry Springer show vibe, with a psychotic dad intentionally hurting his daughter, a hero with a personality of a rescue dog and the heroine constent sullen and morose temper it's by pure obstinacy and a lot of skimming that I finished the book. The whole thing was too much and toxic to read.

Not even the romance between Karson and Lacey could save this story, but I'm giving Laces and Lace one star to Karson and his family for the cheer they brought to the book. Each appearance was like watching a cute puppy video on the internet on a sad rainy day.

Don't get me wrong, I liked this one...I did.
*Hence, the 3 star rating which according to goodreads means that I "liked it."*

Karson was AWESOME and I loved everything about him.

BUT! Lacey did have me at a lovehate relationship due to her unstable antics and insecurities.

And don't even get me started on her best friend, Rachel! Seriously, what the heck?! How is she and Lacey even friends in the first place?!

#So over all? I'm quite at a toss up with this read. It's not terrible or anything, but, I just did not get it at times. So I guess we can agree to disagree on it.

THE END.

I just finished this and should probably wait to review it because my feelings on it are ALL OVER THE PLACE!

Karson King is sexy, thoughtful, completely lovable and definitely swoon worthy. I mean please, he is a compassionate HOT hockey player…..could you want anything more??

Lacey on the other-hand is the reason I am all over the place. I liked her, I felt for her and what she went through but for the love of all that is holy, quit letting people control you!! She is an adult that was completely blinded by the awful people that she was surrounded by. I don’t understand WHY she couldn’t see how blatantly obvious it was that her relationship was being sabotaged.

The story was interesting from start to finish and I keep saying this about this series, the books are SOOOOOOOOOOOO LONG!! Of course, I can’t help but continue reading them because the storylines suck you in.

The One That Got Away

Ever since I read Breaking Away I've been dying to get my hands on this book. I love this series so much and it's one that despite everything, I always end up loving.

It's great that the novella of Karson and Lacey's past is included in the beginning of the book because it really helps you see their past and how heart breaking it was. I was seriously crying for them at one point because of the situation they were in.

The book takes place 9 years after the novella. Both characters are now successful and appear like they have everything they've ever wanted, except each other. Karson walked away 9 years ago and it's something he has regretted every day of his life since. He has loved and missed her so much but feels like it's too late to try and get her back. He never wanted to leave her but people from the past pushed him into doing it until he felt like he had no choice.

Lacey has been through hell and back. She lost her mom to cancer when she was a kid, she also had her fight with cancer and survived but not without some scars. She's such a strong character but yet at the same time, she has so much fragility and insecurities about herself and who she is. Despite the fact that she really annoyed me at times, I couldn't stay mad for long because I understood where she was coming from.

They reunite pretty early in the book and while some may not like how fast things move, I felt like it worked. They've already been separated for 9 years I didn't want to read another story where they deny their love for each other. This book is more about the obstacles they face as a couple from family and sometimes themselves. They're still the same people they fell in love with but now they have a few more issues then they used to.

I just have to say that I absolutely loathe Lacey's dad and her "best friend". Ok, I don't loathe her best friend but I don't like how she treated Lacey. I understand that she was trying to protect her and didn't want her to get hurt but the way she went about it was just completely wrong and made her look like the bad guy. But Lacey's dad? He takes the icing on the cake when it comes to assholes. 90% of their problems stemmed from him and this may be messed up but I kept hoping he would get hit by a car or something just so he would disappear and leave them alone.

The side characters were a great addition to the book. Espcially, J.T. who is Karson's best friend. I can't wait to read his story and see who will get his heart. Karson's family were also a fun and supportive group of characters and I loved that they accepted Lacey instantly. I will admit that Karson sister kind of scares me but she is funny. It was also great seeing the whole crew again and it just made me more excited for the christmas novella so we can see what everyone has been up to.

All in all, Laces and Lace is another hit for me. I forgot how much I love this series and the author's writing. This book is filled with love, second chances, off the chart sexy scenes (my fave!) and some angst filled moments. Job well done Toni Aleo! :)

4.5 Karson and Lacey Stars

I read this book in 2014 & recently re read it via audio book.

This is a gorgeous second chance romance book. Karson and Lacey were very young when they fell in love and Karson was on the precipice of a stellar career with the NHL. Their intention is to be and stay together but someone intervenes and they break up. Nine years later they meet again and this time Karson Is not letting his girl go.

I loved dipping back into the Assassins Hockey world. At times I tired of Lacey pushing Karson away but I got why she did it. This is also a story about healing -Lacey is a breast cancer survivor and this is a fundamental plot in the book.

This included the prequel Tangled in the Laces so rating both stories together.

Working out what to rate this book took quite a lot of thought, I automatically wanted to give it 5 stars because I loved Karson. I totally understood why he walked away when they were both back in college, he was a young man who only wanted to give his girl the world but had forces against him, yes he shouldn't have given in but he didn't have the wisdom that comes with age.

Karson was still a great character in the main story but unfortunately I can't say the same for Lacey......I had lots of sympathy and admiration for what Lacey had to go through as a teenager and thought she was amazing, but wasn't impressed with her as an adult. I felt that Ms Aleo made her a simpering idiot for putting up with her father and best friend and took that line of the story a little too far!

FOUR STARS

Oh, boy... Toni Aleo... you did it this time. Goodbye Shea Adler, you're not my Book Boyfriend anymore. Karson has you licked.
marryhim

T.A. is really a pro at giving us swoon-worthy heroes. Unfortunately, her heroines usually fall so short of deserving these guys, it can sometimes be worth docking stars. The exception here is Piper from Blue Lines. Piper is Awesome.

When this story opened, I had high hopes for Lacey. Lacey is a breast cancer survivor, talented, driven, smart and sweet. And her love for Karson knows no bounds. Mostly the conflict comes from outside sources: Evil mofos who need to die (did I just say that???)

The conflict that comes from within, namely Lacey's self-esteem issues, was borderline annoying. I can see that some readers might get very frustrated with her towards the end of the book. But I didn't feel that way. I expected her wounds and her insecurities to show themselves eventually and for Karson to have to bust through them. Lacey really needed therapy in my opinion. Despite that... I have some big-time complaints about her and some profane language to use, but I'll try to refrain. No promises.

This isn't a spoiler, because it's information in the prequel and I have to talk about it. It's the whole dang conflict, really, so I can't not talk about it.
HER FATHER
somad

Karson deserves a medal of honor, a Purple Heart--something to honor him for his bravery and perseverance. Lacey's dad is EVIL and INSANE. But, the good news is, his insanity and evilness is revealed to Lacey fairly early into the story. So...WHY IN THE EVER-LOVING HELL IS SHE TRYING TO FORGIVE AND FORGET? I seriously hated Lacey at some points. She put Karson in some very uncomfortable positions and he just let her because he wanted to give her the world.

Did I say to give him a Purple Heart? I meant a saint-hood. When he dies, he should be Canonized.

Around 80% something happens and I totally lost my respect for Lacey--which was already teetering--and I nearly did damage to my Kindle.

So here we are again. I'm docking a star for Heroine-Defect and detail-overload (something Toni Aleo's books are just always going to have). The detail-overload tends to make her books drag a tad in the middle. And the Heroine-Defect never ceases to make me angry.

I can't believe I actually finished this book. It was a total train wreck. Was there a prize for the most unlikable, asshole characters in one book? Because this one wins it. There was not a single decent character, except maybe his mother. The heroine was alternately whiny and gullible. The hero was a dick half the time. Don't get me started on the douche-y comments he made about her weight, which were so out of the blue and totally unnecessary. There were several continuity errors, plus some other editing flaws which made it feel like this book was rushed to publication before it was ready.

Even the hockey references were off, such as a mention of a month-long road trip, which is impossible in the NHL. Karson's position is never mentioned, but he seemed to be a defenseman (playing together with Shea), and yet twice it said he was dropped down to the 4th line. Lines are for forwards; d-men have pairings, and even then most teams work with 6 or 7 d-men, not 8. All of which Toni knows. Did all her hockey knowledge (which has always been the strength of this series) go out the window?

I think the worst part is that there was no substance to it. Four hundred plus pages of non-stop sex, cavity-inducing sweetness, insecurities, and people sabotaging their relationship, but it was all just strung together, without much actual plot.

I've never really liked the way Toni writes her heroines - with only one exception, they've all been whiny or completely insecure. I've kept reading the books, though, because I've always loved her heroes, and there's always good hockey. Well, I didn't like Karson at all, and the hockey was almost non-existent. I'm wishing now that I had attempted to read this sooner. I could have saved my money and not bought Overtime. As it is I'm not even sure I'm going to read it. I've had a love/hate relationship with this series for a while, but I think I'm done now. I'll get my hockey fix elsewhere.

Minor spoilers alert.

Assassins Series is one of my favorite series that is about sports. I mean, gorgeous, sweet and insanely hot hockey players? Totally swoon worthy and scorching hot. And like the past books in these series, I totally fell in love with Karson King.

The start of the book was amazing, it was kinda fast but it was good. Even, the evil family is plotting horrible things for Karson and Lacey, I still liked it. But, Lacey's (asshole) dad and her best friend (what a bitch) was really getting in my nerves. Anyway, I still thought, it was really like of Romeo and Juliet, and I thought that both Lacey and Karson will fight all odds together. But noooo, it was like Karson against the evil Martin Family. It really showed how Karson loved Lacey. And it was really sweet. However, I loathe Lacey Martin from the depths of my soul.(Okay, maybe I just found her really really really really annoying) I mean, I get that it was kind of hard to believe that her family is doing everything to break them apart, but the fact that she's so blindsided, it was a major I-wanna-bitch-slap-you-girl thing.

I really wished, that Lacey groveled. Haha.

I guess this is more of a rant than a review. But I still want to comment about Toni Aleo's style of writing which is impeccable and good and sexy as always.

I can't believe how people could love this book *jaw dropping* no offense but I never felt so much irritation for such a long period of time in the past 9 or so hours it wasn't even funny!
I don't even understand why I carried on reading! Guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

My only question is ..
How could people be that selfish??

I never thought I'd hate the female lead so much till I read this book!
I believe in always seeing the best in people but I'm not that effing stupid to let my guard down twice/ thrice when people try to mess with me and my happiness... What's that saying .. Fool me once shame on you, fool my twice shame on me?..

Lacey was so immature and karson , he was the best character there in though at times he needed like a punch to the face when he let Lacey get away with hurting him. I still loved him and his sweet words and how he "wooed" Lacey and the things he did for her, it was really swoon worthy ( 5 stars for his kindness, thoughtfulness , being so supportive and most importantly .. His amazing ability to take so much sh1t from one family)

Anyway ...

WDF was Rachel up too :| she was so selfish , she and Grady got their happily ever after but she couldn't even be happy for friend when she did , even though Grady redeemed himself it was sad, and utterly off putting how he didn't want happiness for his sister!

And bee tee dubz! No damn father is that controlling and such an A to his kids the things he did was unforgivable yet Lacey still acted shocked when she found out the things he did in the end, it was effing pathetic .. Every father wants his princess to be happy and cared for but he took it overboard.

This book worked with themes that aren't believable in reality , readers want reality not things that are impossible, they need stories to relate to not unbelievable stuff.

In the end Lacey was a stupid immature brat who didn't deserve karson and he still was sappy and sweet and the perfect book bf minus times when he let Lacey walk all over him ! I get that she had cancer an had scars but karson never did anything to show he wouldn't support her or that he didn't like what he saw he always made her feel desired and about the baby and how she didn't want one ? Common! She was just a whiny brat who wanted everything her way one way or the other no matter what karson felt , she didn't even try to give him a chance when he tried to explain that he needed her n if she couldn't an wouldn't give him kids he'd live with that!

I'm sad to say that Lacey has ranked close to my number one of most hated female characters.

After reading Tangled in the Laces (the prequel), I couldn’t wait to read Laces and Lace. I was not disappointed. Toni Aleo’s books continue to be phenomenal.

Laces and Lace took place nine years after Tangled in Laces. Lacey Martin and Karson King are accidentally reunited when they both get inside the same cab in Chicago. Their reunion could have gone in so many directions; I really love the path it took. Lacey and Karson were always meant to be together, but their relationship was sabotaged by Lacey’s family. The drama is well done.

Lacey is an incredible heroine. She is a breast cancer survivor who pursues a career that makes others with breast cancer have hope. She is self-conscious, which is completely understandable and believable considering everything she has undergone. Plus, I appreciate that she’s a fellow Chicago Blackhawks fan. That being said, if Karson was my man, I would convert to an Assassin’s fan. Okay being honest, I would have two favorite teams.

I really adore Karson (and his family). Karson has always loved Lacey. I revere that he doesn’t care that her breasts were removed and treated her like she is beautiful. He’s a good man and great foundation for Lacey. I appreciate that he never really lets her go and continue to support her even when they are no longer dating.

Lacey’s dad is a piece of work. It is understandable that after losing his wife to cancer whom he would be over protective of Lacey. Needless to say, he is a bit extreme. It makes him an interesting antagonist.

I enjoyed Karson’s roommate JT. Karson’s relationship with his sister, Kacey, cracked me up. Then when you put JT and Kacey together, it is very amusing.

Laces and Lace is an amazing story. The plot is well done and captivating. This series continues to strengthen and remain heartwarming. If you haven’t read Tangled in Laces, it is included with this book. While this book could work as a standalone, I recommend reading the other books in the series, not only because it is one of my favorite series but also because it makes you appreciate the supporting characters more.

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!

Lacey drove me NUTS! I was yelling at my tablet telling her to open her freaking eyes and see that her dad was a D-bag...seriously...and do not get me started on Rachel....

Karson was probably the "softest" of all of the hockey players in the series. No real spine until the end when he went to get Lacey back...

I really hope Overtime is about JT and Kacey..if It's not, I will probably not be continuing this series.

5 Fantastic Stars!

Review by Natasha Gentile

Ok Ladies, here is the scoop. Toni Aleo is either two people 1) Shea Weber in a woman’s body or 2) from outer space. She says she not either, but I haven’t seen anything to sway my mind. I have said it time and time again that no one, not one person writes hockey romances like this lady, and I know, I’m Canadian! Hockey is in our blood, we bleed our team colors. I swear nothing makes my day as much as watching Sports Center in the morning. I also may be a man, but whatever.

Let me introduce you to the man who has stolen my heart. Karson King. The “King” of his college team, he is one game short of being picked up for the NHL. He’s that good, and he's super hot!!!

He had arresting eyes, dark brown hair that had a red hue to it, and a face that could grace an ad for Calvin Klein. With hard angels, scruff that made him hotter, and a sexy smile. His body just screamed sex. He had door-busting shoulders, toned and thick in the most delicious way. She had seen him all over campus; girls flocked to him like he was a famous pro.

So at the early morning practice he meets none other than Lacey Martin, one look people, one look at it sealed their fate. What he doesn’t know is that Lacey she is a survivor- she has fought and kicked breast cancer’s ass. She was kicking ass and taking names. Karson didn’t care about her body, he wanted her heart. And she gave it to him wholeheartedly. Their love affair made my heart go pitter patter and I felt so complete..But then, I meet the most hated man in the whole world, Nate Martin. Nate Martin I hate you, you make me want to smash something.

It's at this point in the story, about 5% in that I message Toni. At first they were nice messages, cute and sweet. Then they started to get just a little hostile. I believe I told her that I hated her about 45 times an hour.

Nate does what every spineless person does, he threatens Karson with the one other thing that Karson loves more in the world, his hockey career. What's a college kid to do? Cue I hate you message number one!! I would also like to say I hated this book, not just that I loved that I hated it. I couldn’t read fast enough, it was insane how much I wanted to finish this book.

Nine years later, they are both equally successful, Lacey owns a lingerie store in Chicago. For nine years they went on with their lives trying to forget the other. She even got engaged to Ethan, another hockey player. But wait Ethan is also Mayor of a douchebag village. Yup, let me tell you what a tool this guy is, seems the cancer scar is too much for his to stomach so he pays for her to get implants. Dude, if I could karate kick you in the balls like a ninja, it’s on!! Yup another I hate you message sent!! Regardless she can’t seem to forget the one man who branded her heart!

Taking in a sharp breath, Lacey nodded as she looked down at the counter, tears stinging her eyes. She did her best not to mention him. She kept him locked tight in her heart, but as always, Rachel saw right through her. She hadn’t been lying all those years ago when she’d looked him in the eye and said that she would never be the same.

She hadn’t been since she’d watched him walk away, leaving her behind.

And yet another I hate you message, and this time for fun I added in why are you so mean!!!

Karson is playing hockey for the Assassins, he has everything he has always, well almost everything. He is missing the one things that he hasn’t been able to let go- Ms. Martin.

Whenever Karson is in Chicago for a hockey game, he hated coming back here, knowing she was in the same city, but knowing that he would never be able to have her.

Wiping a the stupid tear that fell, she watched as a cab pulled up and she reached for the door. But as she got in the cab and sat down, someone else sat down beside her, having entered the cab from the other side. Someone big, someone who filled the whole side of the cab. Not that she cared; this was her damn cab.

“Excuse me, this is my cab, “ she said, but when a pair of caramel eyes that she could never forget met hers, everything inside her went blazing hot. Sitting beside her wasn’t just some jackass who was trying to steal her cab-no it was the love of her life.

The same love of her life who’d left her behind.

“Karson.”

Who would have known that a simple cab ride could put you face to face with the only one person in the world who makes you complete and whole. Seems that when you believe in fate, she helps you. Or better yet she kicks you in the ass!!!

But this was fate.

He always said too, when he saw her again that he wouldn’t think, he would just do.

So he did just that.

Taking her face in his hands, he pressed his lips to hers and almost cried at how right it felt. When her hand came on top of his, he deepened the kiss, getting lost in the splendor that was Lacey Martin. His heart. Her lips were as soft as he remembered…and the taste. Sweet Jesus above. She tasted like heaven. He never wanted to stop; he wanted to die with her lips on his. He knew then that he could die a happy man.

Now that they have that first meeting out of the way, clearly everything will be ok. Right? One thing they both agree on is that they can’t live without each other. From this day on, it’s them against the world. Unfortunately or them, there are a lot of people not so happy about their relationship.

I feel that at this point I should also point out the characters that I did love in this book. All are on Karson’s side. From his mother who I love, to his father that I wanted to high five, to his ball kicking sister, right down to his horny best friend. They made me somewhat forget about the evil parts of the book.

Here is the thing, in nine years they each became who they are today, the question is do they love the person that they are today? Will they each let their insecurities win and put doubt into their mind? Or will they let those around them ruin their second chance at finally loving each other!

This is probably been the best paced book from the Assassin's series so far. I really liked how Lacey and Karaon came back together.

What was hard to read is how manipulated Lacey was by her dad. And his obsession with her to the point of trying to control her life. I was glad that she trusted Karaon enough to bring her back to herself. Looking forward to reading more! Especially Lacey and Karson!

Laces and Lace was everything I had hoped for, and then some! I have been dying to read this story since Tangled in Laces was published in Seduced by the Game, the fundraising anthology -Hockey Fights Cancer. I am pleased to see that the prequel is included with this release and that the Author is donating $1 for every book sold to this wonderful cause.

When Karson was forced to walk away from Lacey years ago it broke him. He's never fully been able to move on and when a chance to make amends presents itself he commits fully to reclaim Lacey and his heart.

Lacey won her battle with breast cancer, but still has an aching hole in her chest, put there by Karson. When fate brings him back to her door, she finds it impossible not to give him the second chance he so desperately wants.

However, Lacey's family and best friend aren't excited about this reunion and are a determined to separate these two for good. Will true love overcome all odds, or will the meddling of the people that claim to love Lacey the most push these two soul mates apart... Again?

I am such a fan of the Assassins series. Toni Aleo writes emotional, but heartwarming romances starring hot hockey players and the women who love them. I've yet to give any book in this series less than 5 stars. This series is one that I've reread several times and am likely to read it again. Laces in Lace maybe in my top two favorites of this series. Toni Aleo uses her voice as a platform to not only entertain, but to also bringing something as ugly as cancer and making it beautiful with this story of second chances.

I recommend reading all books in this series, however Laces and Lace can absolutely stand alone. If you are looking for a great read this one is sure to fit the bill.

PS> I was provided with an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I LOVED this book and will be purchasing a copy for my keeper shelf!

I feel like this has been the most anticipated book for me as I have been eagerly awaiting it, since I finished the prequel a few months back. I wanted Karson and Lacey's story so bad, so the minute it went live early, I started reading it.

Lets start by saying I love Karson....One of the best Assassin characters yet. He is right up there with Shea as far as I am concerned. I was worried, he would be this total playa in the book and it would take him a while to come around to Lacey again. But no, he sees her , still loves her and he immediately gives her his heart again, no playing around at all. I loved this about Karson, he was just so happy to have her and love her again....

I still am a little unsure how I feel about Lacey. I liked her, but at some points I just wanted to strangle her....she was not as confident and strong in her love like Karson was and at certain points I was feeling like, yeah Karson you deserve better than her. It really took me a while, like maybe even to the end of the freaking book to like her....

As for her family, hell they were despicable. Rachel, wow what a crap best friend. If I was her, I would never forgive her and the fact she kept listening to her, bugged me HUGE!!!

Anyway still a great read, as this is a fantastic series and one hell of a talented author!!!!

Looking forward to the next book in the series!!!

1.5 stars.

I put off reading this so many times but then I thought hey, how bad could it be? Well I nearly DNF'd so may times it's not even funny. I didn't like Lacey in the prequel and this book made it worse. Can you sat idiot? How can you let your family talk too and insult someone who you are supposed to leove so much. I mean she acted so soft headed it was a joke. She absolutley ruined this book, it could have been great cause they actually got their act together very early on but she had to ruin it with all her wishy-washiness and not stadning up to her stupid father, brother and what the heck? sister-in-law!! Karson - he was too good to be true. Don't know how he loved her cause I wanted to roll her down a hill in a barrel!

I thought it was stupid and it got on my nerves!

*****UPDATE******

Seroiously, reflecting on this, I think I need to lower my rating!! This girls family is horrible and she is so stupid for listening to them. I mean what the hell! I'm absolutely disgusted by her and her stupid crying all the time and listening to the bad advice from her so called family who broke up you and you so called love for nine years!!

Why do authors not love their book protag for them to deserve more? Oh my, my heart just bled for Karson. It really did.

I had to lowermy rating - if I could give this less than one star I would!

WOW the women in this whole series are IDIOTS!

I absolutely loved Karson King, I liked him in the other books and I couldn't wait for him to get his own story... Same with JT, but then I thought for sure when JT met Lacey he was gonna be the one to cause trouble. But nooooo, it was all Lacey's dad and supposed best friend... OMG, it made me physically sick how they treated her, her dad had a borderline incestuous obsession to her, always trying to keep her with him. It was disgusting and the way she just believed everything he said even after all the times she'd caught him screwin her over... Are you kidding me?
And the one person, (Karson), whose done everything in his power to make her happy, to keep her happy, never lied to her, never disrespected her family or her stupid a-s-s friend, invited them into his home when he continously tried to end his career and break them up, and what does she do? Leaves him anyway because she's an idiot....WOW
I know I've loathed all the ladies in this entire series but sometimes they redeem themselves by the end and I'm like okay, it worked out, they're awesome together and it made me like the story... but this one? Not even a little bit... I wanted to punch Lacey almost as bad as I wanted to slit her dads throat.....

Hated it. I hope her dad and friend Rachael get the karmatic kick in the teeth they both deserve.
