Fangs for Nothing

Rate this book
He’s a hot, grumpy, reclusive vampire, and the last thing he wants is an interfering human tidying his castle…until her.

Lord Alaric Valerian has a problem. His mother is visiting his castle for the first time, but she doesn’t know that Alaric has filled every room with his centuries of artistic passions and creative pursuits.

Desperate, he hires professional organiser Winnie Preston to help him tame the mess. But Alaric isn’t prepared for bubbly, passionate Winnie to show up at his castle and ram a metaphorical stake through his cold, vampire heart. Winnie sets his fangs on edge, but the more closely he works with her, the more he wishes she could be his.

So when Alaric’s mother arrives with a new bride-to-be in tow, Alaric convinces Winnie to pretend to be his fiance. He may be causing all kinds of scandal in the vampire court by being engaged to a human, but at least he doesn’t have to give up his reclusive life.

But Winnie still doesn’t know Alaric’s a vampire, and Alaric didn’t count on Winnie’s meddling book club pinning him for a mysterious murder in the village. Will their maybe-not-so-fake-marriage survive once Winnie discovers the monster that lurks beneath his fangs?

Fangs for Nothing is a kooky, spooky, vampire romance full to the cauldron-brim with fake dating, a meddling smutty book club, murder and mystery aplenty, endless cups of tea, quirky characters, and a broody vampire with an ass so fine, Geralt of Rivia comes to him for fitness tips.

Fangs for Nothing was a good, but pretty long, book.
This novel has everything I like, a picturesque little village, good looking vampires, a non conventional book club, an intriguing mystery, and a funny, spicy and emotional storyline.

Winnie Preston is a decluttering expert who accepted a job offer from a Lord to sort out some rooms of his castle before a ball. Little she knows that the secretive Lord Alaric hides some secrets that will change her life.

The characters have an unexpeted depth. I empathized with Winnie, from start to end, her fears are relatable, also Alaric has some flaws and scars that make him more human. I loved them both, their pasts are dark and painful, and I wished they could finally have a happy and hopeful future together.

This felt like the second book in the series because there is a book about the coven ladies, but even if I was so curious about them this can still be read as a stand alone. The author wrote an epilogue that won't let you stop at this installment, I'm already looking forward to the next one.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for kindly giving me an advanced copy of this book to read.

NICE ROMANCE, BUT TOO MANY CHARACTERS

Maybe it's just because I didn't read the first book in this series, but I was a little confused at times...

What I liked

👍 Romance: The romance between Alaric and Winnie felt very organic. I wouldn't exactly call it slow burn, but it was still a romance that had time to grow and become profound, which is something I really appreciate.

What I didn't like

👎 Characters: For me, there were simply too many characters. I had a hard time telling them apart and remembered who was who. Some of them were not really consequential to the story, which made it a bit messy.

👎 Sleuthing: A murderer is on the lose, so of course the Nevermore Murder Club sets out to investigate. Only... They didn't. Not really. It was hardly even a thing until the very last minute, and even then it wasn't really anything at all. I would have preferred the sleuthing to actually be a central part of the story or it not have been there at all. This just felt irrelevant.

Murder. Spice and everything nice… and naughty 🖤🔥
Thank you to NetGalley and Steffanie Holmes for an ARC of this amazing book and allowing me to share my thoughts with other readers.

This is definitely a book that is 5 stars based on exactly and PERFECTLY matching my vibes, this was everything I could have wanted and hoped for in a spooky season book and done to perfection.
The burn was slow and sizzling. The characters were unique, quirky and fun. The plot was complex and interesting with never a dull moment. I was immediately hooked and never let go.

I mean what about the “Nevermore Murder Club and Smutty Book Coven” is there not to love? That’s everything right there! I loved the references to other popular books, we love a hype girl in the booksta world and this made me love this author even more.

Each of the peripheral characters clearly has their own story and I am simply elated that lots of those books exist in the series preceding this one, the Nevermore Bookshop series. I can’t wait to dig into all of them!

Okay, the spice. This was such a great slow burn with so much tension you could cut it with a knife! I loved the creative moments that led up to Alaric giving in! Absolutely perfect “f**k it” moments. This book was truly impressive somehow combining all of the best book boyfriend tropes and micro tropes together in the best way.

If you love the Sophie Morgan books, this is 100% your next spooky season, paranormal romance series.

Series: The Nevermore Murder Club and Smutty Book Coven #1
Rating: 3.5 stars - I liked it

TW: hoarding disorder; PTSD, panic attacks and nightmares; mentions of war, torture, and multiple murder attempts

Lord Alaric Valerian has a problem. His mother is visiting his castle and plans to host a ball, but she doesn’t know he has filled every room with his artistic passions. Since he is desperate, he hires a professional organizer to help him fix his mess. But she is human and Alaric isn’t prepared for how she would turn his world upside down and awaken his cold, vampire heart.

This book caught my attention because of the beautiful cover and then I read the blurb and knew I would probably enjoy it. This is my first Holmes book, but most likely not my last. This was an enjoyable vampire romance with close proximity and fake dating. Overall, I did enjoy this book but I think the pacing of the story caused me to struggle a bit with it. While this is a fake fiance story, that part doesn’t really come into effect until almost 50 percent in this book, which with over 500 pages, that's quite far in for a romance. I did enjoy that first half but it was a bit slow with its focus on cleaning and organizing Alaric’s castle. But I still enjoyed the story, I just wish I had known going in this was going to be a bit of a slow start.

Winnie was an energetic and compassionate woman who really wants to help people struggling with too much stuff. She is driven by her childhood growing up in a hoarder house with her mother, who is still struggling. I really liked Winnie and her drive to help others. We see her trauma and PTSD from her childhood come into play. While I know nothing about hoarding disorder, I do think the author did a good job at showing how this is different for every person and how it affects those around them. Winnie really struggles with clutter but has built her life around being in it and fixing it, but we still see her have panic attacks and nightmares.

Alaric, like Winnie’s mom, is a hoarder but in a different way. Alaric is over 500 years old and spends his time holed up in his castle making art. He is an extremely passionate creator but as the centuries have passed he has lost more of his castle to those passions. We see him being more receptive to cleaning and getting rid of stuff and he makes a lot of progress, but of course this doesn’t fix his hoarding tendencies completely.

While Alaric is an old warrior, we see that he is actually a gentle soul who just wants someone to see him and not a monster. While Winnie doesn’t know he is a vampire at first, even when she finds out she still sees the true man underneath. I really enjoyed seeing these two get to know each other, play at being a couple, and realize they wanted to be together forever. Yes of course there is a lot of trauma, fear, and a murder to work through first but it was enjoyable all the same. I also really like that while we see these two have a HEA, it only happened after a lot of working through the trauma and mental illness with a therapist and friends for it to work. It felt more realistic, especially when dealing with something as debilitating as hoarding.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one in the series. I also plan on reading the Nevermore Bookshop Mysteries now because I really want to know more about Mina and the other NMCSBC members and their adventures solving murders. Also Mina has three husbands who are from literature, so of course I need to find out how that happens now.

Thank you Netgalley and Victory Editing for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

This was a perfectly executed Vampire Romance murder mystery with a fun variety cast of characters.

I didn't know I needed this book until I had finished it. The heavy connection to mental health and dealing with the trauma behind hoarding with not only the hoarders but the people the effected with it was eye opening. As someone who lives with what I what would call a hoarder this book has taught me to see a different side and has woken a new compassion in me. Thank you Steffanie for that unexpected lesson.

But on to the romance and characters. I don't take it lightly when I saw this was a perfectly executed Vampire Murder Mystery Romance. It really did tick off all the boxes.

Fake dating. Miscommunication and secrets tropes. Friednships and family trauma.

The spice actually came at 40% and not 70% into the book like I am used to and my god the spice was fire!! I really enjoyed that the plot really didn't need the spice but my oh my the places and timing it showed up was just amazing!!!

The comradare between the FMC and the bookclub pals was so intriguing I instantly went and got the Nevermore Bookclub series and am reading that next!!

The chemistry between the grumpy MC snd FMC was actually well balanced. The attraction was Instant and he was so chivarlous and attentive. Winnie needed help but wanted to be the helper and a lot of the times you could see her struggles of I'm used to being alone I will be fine attitude that contrasted nicely with the I'm glad he came to help me.

I'm glad that it wasn't just the FMC that had trauma. Obviously the hunky centuries old Vampire has trauma too and they way they got to know eachother thru sharing memories and stories while they decluttered his castle was unlike any Romance plot I had seen before. It was just all sorts of kooky and fun.

I could prattle on and about this book but I will stop and say thanks again Netgalley and Steffanie and her team at Victory Editing and I look forward to reading the sequal and I will be sharing this with my own Vampire Loving Bookclub!

I’m choosing to believe this is a Klaus & Caroline AU. If you know, you know.

This was genuinely HILARIOUS while also dealing with heavier topics like hoarding, mental illness, and PTSD with tact. It definitely could have been trimmed down as the pacing ebbed and flowed as the story progressed but it was filled with a lovely spooky atmosphere and very unique characters, so I really enjoyed it nonetheless.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a relatively lighthearted and steamy paranormal romance/murder mystery!

Big thanks to NetGalley and Bacchanalia House for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 🖤🧛‍♂️

as a fan of anything with vampire vibes, this book really did it for me! it gave me that nostalgic twilight feeling i've been chasing since middle school. the vampire lore and the lighthearted tone made it a fun read. the banter between the main characters was a highlight, keeping me engaged and i also enjoyed the murder mystery storyline.

however, it didddd lean a bit too heavily on overused tropes—there was so much drama packed in that it became overwhelming at times. the mix of fake dating, forced proximity, miscommunication, one bed, other woman drama, and other common plot devices felt like too much all at once. more romance and mystery, and little to no drama would’ve made this perfect for me.

overall, it was an enjoyable read, and i appreciate bacchanalia house for the arc!

I seriously loved this! It had the perfect mixture of magic, romance, self discovery, and some darker themes that I found very relatable. Winnie is such a lovely character to fall in love with, but all the other characters are so complex and thoughtful too. I need the second book ASAP.

This was very silly and very fun, perfect for Halloween season!

The FMC was well rounded, not too sunshine to be annoying, but still positive amongst all the melodrama. The MMC was the quintessential written-by-woman love interest, obsessed with FMC at first sight. The other side characters were really fun, although the book club girls blended together for the most part for me.

The third-act breakup was annoying but thankfully wrapped up quickly and had a semi-reasonable cause for breakup. I kind of forgot about the murder mystery aspect, and every time the sleuthing part came up, I remembered that was supposed to be a central plot point. There were a bunch of other side plots with the useless business owner, codependent mom, and treacherous ex-best friend that I think the book could have been reduced or trimmed to make the book about 10-20% shorter.

This was amusing and light-hearted, and I'll definitely read the next one in the series.

Thank you, Bacchanalia House, for the arc!

This was such a fun book! It had way more mystery than I expected, which was a nice surprise. Lots of the classic tropes, such as fake dating, which are done pretty well.
The main character, Winnie, had a lot of depth and it was great to see her work through her trauma. Alaric was a swoon-worthy love interest.

The story did feel slightly too long, and there were a few mistakes which were distracting. Some of the romantic elements felt like they took a while to get into, and once there it was a bit rushed. But overall this is an entertaining book, perfect for this time of year! It was my first book by Steffanie Holmes, I’ll definitely be looking for more.

I loved the Nevermore Bookshop Mystery Series and was excited to see that Steffanie Holmes was creating a new series in the same village as the Nevermore Bookshop. Fangs for Nothing does not disappoint. I was happy to see many of the same characters from the Nevermore Series make a comeback as well as introduce new characters. Alaric and Winnie were the perfect couple and some of the situations the two get into were very entertaining. Although there were many comedic aspects, this book also does bring up the difficult topic of hoarding and the effect it had on Winnie and her relationship with her mother.

I am excited to see what is next for Alaric and Winnie in book two.

Fangs for Nothing is out now.

***Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ebook.

At first, I was very *enthralled (teehee)* about the the description for "Fangs for Nothing", we've got a cute puns, well executed timing for spooky season, and the classic trope of grumpy vs. sunshine + bonus trope: Fake Dating. This story follows the Winnie, a professional organizer (with childhood trauma associated with hoarding), and Alaric, a 500 year old vampire hoarder. She's trying to help him navigate through 500 years of different hobbies/clutter on a tight deadline related to his mother throwing a ball. There's also a lot going on in the background (her mother, her partner, ex-fiancé/ex best-friend) back in London and new characters from the 'Nevermore Murder Club and Smutty Book Coven.' I think it started off strong with the world building, 1st murder case, and the lead up to Alaric and Winnie's intimate relationship.

However, I felt like there was too much going on in the book. Around 50% I just felt so bored and the cute banter was not enough to sustain me. We've got the incoming texts from Faye (partner), her Mother (source of trauma), the Book Club (great banter, but also way to many members) (Side note: I understand from looking at the author's history that Smutty Book Coven Members have their own separate series, but this is the first book I've read from her and their very set in their ways--I don't feel like this book was treated a start to a new series and you would have needed to read the others to get the full benefit). The spicy scenes were OK, but Alaric and Winnie weren't described very well--it just seemed like they had so many unnecessary up and down's and it wasn't that special of a relationship. The most maddening thing to me is that the murders popping up (it's a romance/murder mystery/trauma dump) --AND the murder mystery was NOT solved by the end of the book (supposed to open to book 2 with Arabella and Gideon's relationship).

Overall, there were good things about the book but felt like a lot of could have been cut out and wrapped up better than the way it was. I didn't care enough by the end of the story to find out who was the murderer or to stick around for book 2. If you want smut and silly banter, this one may be ok but there are less dense options out there as well.

Thanks so much to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the arc!

This was such a fun and quick read that also dives into some darker themes. Winnie and Alaric are both flawed and scarred characters. Both have their own baggage that has to be considered before starting a relationship. I did find that the book could have spent a bit longer exploring their lives seperate from each other and both coming to terms with their traumas.

Alas i Loved "The Nevermore Murder Club and Smutty Book Coven", i loved all the girls and their different personalities and i can't wait for more books possibly exploring other characters relationships. I have some theories ... involving some other supernatural creatures ... c ... a fellow vampire (name starting with a) and another vampire (name starting with g) having a second chance romance for the next book?!?! OMG! ❤️‍🔥

Heat rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ / 5 peppers

Tropes:
-Vampire🩸🧛‍♂️ MMC x Human FMC
-Grumpy/Sunshine
-Fake Relationship
-Crazy Book Club
-Touch Her & Perish 💀 Vibes
-Forced Proximity

You know some hilarity was going to ensue when you have a bubbly sunshine FMC who happens to be a personal organizer who is called to help a reclusive vampire with his slightly hoarder-ish castle. Throw in a meddling book club and I just knew this would be chaotically fun. This is my second book that I have read by Steffanie Holmes the first being "The Man in Black" which I absolutely loved. This story was a ride, when I picked it up, I hadn't realized it was nearly 600 pages, so it took me a bit longer to read than I originally planned. This book had it all romance, vampires, mystery, a smutty book club that also solves crime, and of course some spicy goodness. A few of the scenes had me ready to fan my face, which is strange for me given what I usually read (🔥🤭the ⚔️ lesson and the first time Alaric bit🩸 Winnie). Their relationship was a slower burn.

Winnie Preston: The FMC of this story is a personal organizer; we learn pretty quickly as to why she has pursued this career. This girl has trauma, so much childhood trauma that it is spilling into her work and personal relationships. While I understood her reasoning for picking her job, I still feel like she picked a job that could overwhelm her at any moment. The PTSD and nightmares were fully present for her, I really felt for her at most of the book (minus that last issue at the ball, to me that was an overreaction).

Lord Alaric Valerian: This slightly grumpy reclusive vampire was a gem, a tad eccentric but as a vampire I would expect nothing different. I loved that while he is an artist that he had so many different types of mediums that he worked with rather than just being a sculptor or painter. His history was a dark and lonely tale. I didn't fault him for not telling Winnie absolutely everything I felt his reluctance fit the situation.

Now this might be subjective as this is my opinion but where this story lost a star for me was the relationship tension, I won't delve to heavily into it because I don't want to spoil the story, but I wish for characters that wouldn't run when faced with conflict or things they don’t like. I felt Winnie reached a few instances where she let her emotions rule her and reacted. (I know her past is the root cause, but it just seemed....I don't know, overused I guess as she had gone to the book club when she had been spooked previously). The book club even poked fun at authors doing 3rd act break-ups so I was marginally hopeful that all the climax/final conflict would only be in relation to the FMC's mom, the MMC's mom and her proposed fiancé for her son, or possibly the unaliving mystery in the story. Sadly, I was just a bit disappointed, the book redeemed itself in the end, but I just felt a portion of the relationship conflict was unneeded.

The Nevermore Murder Club & Smutty Book Coven: woo that was a mouthful, these ladies were a riot. I was a smidgen skeptical on their role in the main character's relationship, but it didn’t take long to discover. While they seemed gossipy to begin with but they did actually cared for Winnie and had no personal vendettas against Lord Valerian, which was a relief. I really enjoyed the found family/friendship vibes from then. I would say that the mystery side of the plot was present, but it wasn't the main focus for the entirety of the book. More like dropping breadcrumbs of information while more victims are unalived. I felt the bigger plot point was the development of the main character's relationship. Honestly after reading this, I sort of wish a book club like this existed.

Overall, I enjoyed this story it was a nice read to start my October spooky season with. If you are a fan of vampire romances, mysteries, with a dose of spice then you should give Fangs for Nothing by Steffanie Holmes a read.

Thank you to NetGalley and to Bacchanalia House for allowing me the opportunity to read this story in exchange for an honest review.

Fangs for Nothing was a great book to start off for spooky season! This story follows the Winnie, a professional organizer, and Alaric, a 500 year old vampire hoarder. They need to navigate a castle full of multiple centuries worth of artistic pursuits/hobbies, a vampire society attempting to integrate into a modern work, complex family dynamics and career challenges, and a string of murders within town. Luckily, Winnie has the members of the Nevermore Murder Club and Smutty Book Coven for support.

The synopsis of the book touts romance tropes like grumpy-sunshine and fake-dating but I don't think it followed through on either of these very well. It lacked the witty banter of your typical grumpy-sunshine book as the main male character seems like a perfect gentleman plucked from the past. The fake-dating also seems unnecessary. I don't think it would have taken away from the plot if they just started dating from their initial attraction. Despite this, I enjoyed both the female and male main characters and thought they worked well together as a couple to tackle obstacles and process past trauma. I don't know much about hoarding so I cannot speak to whether or not it was accurately portrayed. I hope the author was able to consult with specialists to ensure appropriate representation. I would have liked to know more about the Smutty Book Coven members. I loved the idea of this and enjoyed that they were even reading a book that I have read recently. However, there were too many women involved for me to keep them all straight and learn each of their stories. AND the murder mystery was unfortunately not solved by the end of the book.

3.5 ⭐️

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ebook. While the story was entertaining, I wish the murderer was caught by the end of the book as I don't know that I will continue to the next one. Recommend this one for anyone wanting a cute, modern day vampire romance with smut for spooky season!

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

Winnie is a professional organizer who takes a job at a castle. Yes an actual old style castle. This is where she meets the grumpy and secluded Lord Alaric Valerian who hoards his art. He needs help organizing a ball that his mother has planned. While Winnie helping this secretive man, she joins a book club full of women who all have weird quirky personalities but she feels welcomed and loves being around them. Throughout this book, you experience multiple supernatural beings including vampires, psychics, and witches.

While this book gives extremely excellent cozy fall vibes, it does address some heavy topics for certain characters. That one topic is hoarding and I honestly really appreciate a book covering that. Personally, I haven’t read a fiction book yet that has covered hoarding.

I loved having a side of muder mystery going on while Winnie and Alaric fall in love. It truly is one of the best reads especially during fall season! So go warm up a hot chocolate and sit down and read this!

Read if you LOVE:
* vampires
* witches
* murder mystery
* fake engagement
* grumpy // sunshine trope

Winnie Preston organizes people’s lives, unlike her own. When her fiancé Patrick and best friend since kindergarten Claire tell her that they’ve fallen in love and her mother keeps buying more things and the hoarding becomes even worse, she goes to see a new client. In small town. And the client lives in a castle. It’s the same man she saw the night before and who kissed her like she’d never been kissed before. There’s something odd about this Lord Alaric Valerian, that she just can’t put her finger on.

A mystery, new friendships, a book club, paranormal activities and a vampire falls first all come together in this book.

The epilogue shows us the next couple (I could already tell that these two would be endgame early on). It is a long book, that has a lot of inner thinkings that may drag a bit. I did keep putting this book down, but in the end enjoyed Winnie and Alarics story.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

As I started reading this, I figured out it was set in the same world as the Nevernore book shop, which I still haven't finished. So I was a little lost with some of the characters I recognized and didn't recognized. Regardless, I loved this book. It was funny, witty, and full of murder and Mayhem. It had all the components that I loved about the Nevemore book shop books. This is a great Halloween read because of the atmosphere. Not only is it light and funny in places, but it also tackles some harder subjects like PTSD and hoarding.

This was so cute and such a fun read. Fangs for Nothing had murder, mystery, friendships, and falling in love.
Alaric is an ancient recluse vampire who has not had it easy and hides away from the world. He is obsessed with art, which makes his home full of clutter.
Winnie has not had an easy life as she has childhood trauma that has caused her to become a professional organizer.

If you love mystery, spice, and romantic vampires, then you should definitely pick this one up.

This book… this freaking book…. Ahhh. I cannot convey just how much I LOVE this book!!! I was skeptical going in, as it’s not my normal kind of read… but this book truly has something for everyone in it! Love, humor, murder, friendship, magic, vampires, spice, castles, books and more! Winnie is an organizer in her company owned with her friend Faye. Winnie takes a job at a real castle and meets Lord Alaric Valerian (she has no idea she has met him before..eeek) and it’s like instant attraction in more ways than one! She’s helping him organize his castle for a ball his mother is throwing, the humor and sexual tension is hilarious and spicy. But Alaric has a secret Winnie doesn’t know, he’s a vampire! Winnie also joins a book club with a group of different women from town. There is so very much more but truly, read it! I couldn’t put it down! I am so in love with Winnie and Alaric… oh and I heard there is a part two coming? YES PLEASE! 6/5 stars. All stinking day long. I cannot even genre this book, it truly has everything. Absolute MUST read! I was lucky enough to have been able to read this as an ARC through NetGalley and Victory Editing. This is truly a masterpiece!!

I am obsessed with grumpy sunshine books, and was looking for something similar to assistant to the villain. This book HOOKED me, and I couldn’t put it down! The yearning, the angst, the spice 🥵 i would definitely recommend it!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for this ARC. Fangs for Nothing is a fun new take on vampire romance. I loved how the mental health of both Winnie and Alaric were at the forefront of this story. I really related to that aspect. I also enjoyed the nuances of a vampire/human relationship and the very clearly laid out rules for how vampires work. There was a fake-dating trope in this book and I haven’t really read cake-dating tropes in the past, but I did enjoy it in this book. I look forward to additional works in this series. I would recommend this book to anybody who is looking for a vampire romance that takes places in a modern setting where the FMC is a more mature adult and if you want something that is very consent forward.

2.5/5

so like, okay so, i mean, i just don’t think i needed it to be 500 pages however I mean it hit the mark on the vampire romance on the middle but there were just so many plot lines. but yeah i guess. the epilogue left something to be desired, will think about reading the second one.

This would’ve been better if it was like 25% less book. It also needed more actual murder investigation.
