Tales from the Tarot

Found in Obscurity

Rate this book
Being a born witch doesn’t mean you actually want to be a witch. At least not in Lorin’s case. He made the decision to run from it over a decade ago, sequestering himself away from his coven and the idea of magic.
Magic isn’t so easy to hide away from, however.
Drawn back to his hometown, Lorin finds himself tangled up with the one thing he was trying to avoid above all else. A familiar. And this familiar proves to be so much more than he could ever expect.

Kit’s humanity had been taken from him. Locked away and kept out of reach. Trapped in his fox form, he’s spent years wandering around from one bonding ceremony to the next, looking for a witch to break the spell. Not just any witch. His mate.
It was never going to be as simple as that, however.
Not only does his mate not seem to want him around, there’s a far more sinister plot to grapple with as Kit tries desperately to woo his mate and make him understand he’s more than he appears.

Found in Obscurity is a standalone MM romance novel as part of the multi-author collaboration Tales from the Tarot. This book is based on the major arcana card The Hermit.

This was absolutely adorable! I'm fairly certain that I've never read anything else like this before.

Lorin is a rather reluctant witch who is lost in life and doesn't know what to do. Kit is an arctic fox shifter familiar who's having a really tough time. When they bond as witch and familiar both of their lives are bound together on a new journey, and they are just the absolute sweetest couple.

I loved the energy and mischievous behaviour of Kit when he was in his arctic fox form! Lorin was so clueless at times but it was funny to see Kit get exasperated at him.

There is a lot of tragedy and some horrific circumstances, but I think that because it's written in third person I did feel there was a certain degree of separation, and the emotional impact maybe wasn't as strong as it would have been in first person POV.

The mystery plot running alongside the romance was really engaging, and the magical world building was so good with lots of details that I haven't seen before - mainly the hands, which I would love to see pictures of!

I would happily read more and I just love the way AM Rose create these unique story worlds for each series of books.

Plot: 2,5/5
POV: 2

Main Characters:
4/5 – Kit, Age Unknown, Fox Shifter, Familiar
2/5 – Lorin, 25-30yo, witch

The first thing I LOVED about this book was the cozy vibe I got from being in Lorin’s house with the delightful Kit.
The second was Kit's POV in his fox form or Lorin’s descriptions of Kit 🦊 being absolutely adorable and cute! Oh, and also the bathtub spell!

If, after reading my whole review, you're wondering why my rating is 2.5/3 stars instead of 0/2, it’s because I don’t rate books that low if they don’t include discrimination or hate speech, even if the book isn’t the best thing you’ve read.
ARC or no ARC, this is my honest opinion, and according to my rating system, this is my rating.

The smut was... ah, nonexistent and very poorly written. The authors skipped the most important trivial parts.

Maybe the authors thought they didn’t have to bother with the "not-so-trivial" stuff because they had cheesy, fluffy, sugar-coated content with sprinkles on top....and a cherry too (pun intended). Instead of writing at least half a page (no more than that) of NORMAL HUMAN RELATIONSHIP COMMUNICATION.
😮‍💨 What the authors gave us just didn’t feel real! It's just disappointing bc it had pontecial!

Let’s look at the important trivial conversations that adults in real life have before doing anything sexual related, which the authors decided weren’t worth including:

1. No discussion about roles, whether either of them were tops, bottoms, or versatile. Lorin was like, oh, we’re going to do it now? No need to talk because I know I’m going to top you. Sooo we just going to pretend that the MCs talked...okay I'm closing my eyes 🙈....is it done already? 🙉 are you finish....ufff I'm glad that's over! 🙄
2. Super confusing relationship, Lorin was initially jealous (based on assumptions he didn’t clarify with Kit) about whether Kit had been with anyone intimately. Then, in the first and only intimate scene we get in the entire book, Lorin says it’s Kit’s first time? Okay... confusing, but this is what happens when there’s zero communication between the main characters about such important topics.

🤔So, to recap: Lorin, the more experienced one, doesn’t communicate at all with Kit about their sexual preferences, even though it’s Kit’s first time.....🤨 okay.okay.okay.sure.sure.sure.sure.no doubt.no doubt.no doubt

On to the next common trivial facts or the "no need to have a guideline" guideline....usually, u just need common sense!

3. Brief description of prep, but no lube, there’s no mention of Kit having natural lubrication either, so... okay. For Kit’s first time? 🤔🙂👍👍...hmmm.... the prepping was done by Lorin...hmmm....who is what?....A witch....And this kind of witches have what?.....Glad u ask! Sharp, claw-like nails.... that definitely damages skin, and they are also longer than average human nails...🤔🤔🤔 so how exactly was Lorin able to prep Kit without any lube (bc there’s no mention) and with sharp nails? 🙃 that makes PERFECT sense!! Another mystery to add to the over growing pile...
And this could’ve been EASLY solved with magic!!!!
4. Unprotected sex, as we often see in Fated Mates stories, there’s a lack of conversation about protection. Lorin and Kit don’t discuss whether they’re comfortable with going without a condom or if it even matters to them, just like in many Fated Mates books.
This might be overlooked 😒, but there’s nothing sexier than a bit of communication about what they’re going to do!!! Another missed opportunity to add a little more smut!!! Easly
5. The Post-Sex and Morning creampie disappearance Mystery🔍🤔. So, the deed is done. What’s next... aftercare, Lorin? You’re not going to take care of your mate, even after his first time? No?👌 Morning comes, and Kit "magically" doesn’t even need to shower....nothing, zero. He just gets up and goes for his morning run in his fox form. Okay, let’s just forget that he had residue inside him... Really, what are showers for?

Okay, I’m done. Sorry, not sorry....just keeping the facts real. 🤗

I’m not judging the book for having no smut. I saw the trope list, and it does say Slow Burn (however, that should’ve been made clearer in the blurb) and it has almost no smut.
🤔 Well, I think there isn’t really smut....just the act...or...action...or a brief description of intercourse.

Even though I’m not a fan of slow burns, I can still enjoy one... but with the expectation that we’d get to the smut by at least 60%, not at 78-86%! And then we get just one and a half scenes? WTF?

So, I’m going to think this book as the intended audience this is for, not as someone like me who expects at least five smut scenes...whenever the authors feel like giving them, really!

Side Characters: 2/5

Well, let’s keep this quick, shall we?
The cliché of a small hometown with a small-minded community ✔️
A another trope that I prefer not to read...
😮‍💨🤧

The thing that bothered me the most was the 'sex thing' (I’m not sure what to call it).
Besides that, I can overlook the rest.
But here is THE REST:
I didn’t understand why the witch community was mean, rude, and made stupid assumptions about Lorin.
There’s no solid explanation for their behavior. It’s unnecessary and full of futile assumptions about Lorin... like with Grandma.

Lorin’s Grandma is indecipherable. I don’t think this grandmother-grandson relationship is healthy, and the fact that Grandma never truly admitted she was a COMPLETELY mean, old know-it-all was frustrating. Lorin always mentioned how mean she was to him but somehow just got over it!
That didn’t seem right. Why make the grandmother so horrible... rude, mean, disrespectful, and manipulative.... if she’s not going to fully redeem herself? That felt like a plot hole or just plain bad writing!

Glenn seemed like a missed opportunity for representing a gender neutral or trans character.

Oh, and I just remembered, I didn’t like the descriptions of the MCs about each other before they met, because they assumed each other’s gender. In today’s context, that just feels wrong.

Also, the heteronormative role descriptions of the MCs’ respective parents were just cliché and unremarkable. He is described as strong and musky, while she is beautifully in flowing dress and smells like flowers... You know the drill
😐

Tarot Card: The Hermit

The description and ambiance of The Magic Shop were good, as was The Owner interactions.
The only thing I didn’t understand was why The Owner, even though he sent the package to Lorin's home like he said he would, also said he was coming back but never appeared or was brought up again.
At least we had The Hermit tarot card drawn in this book.

❄️🦊🌲❄️🦊🌲❄️🦊🌲Q❄️u🦊o🌲t❄️e❄️🦊🌲❄️🦊🌲❄️🦊🌲

"Kit had crawled his way into Lorin’s lap before he could even process it, winding himself into a tight ball on his knees before plopping his head down and falling asleep.
His fluffy tail was wrapped around Lorin’s wrist as if he was afraid Lorin would find a way to leave without him, even with Kit literally sitting on top of him."

Cheating?
Cons:The only thing I didn't need was the specifics on the food. My favorite kinds of books are the ones that don't describe the food the characters are eating in every scene, or at least only once or twice. It's not just because I'm vegan—I respect everyone's choices—but I also don't think it's necessary to define a character's lifestyle or personality by their food preferences. That's why I don't read chef or food-related books. That being said, the book mentions food about 5-7 times. What I found COMPLETELY unnecessary was the need to specify exactly what Lorin was feeding Kit in his Fox form.
The Ending: 2/5 (predictable and too long)
HEA/HFN/Cliffhanger?

Would I read more of this authors? Maybe, if the next book has a good amount of smut

!! I don't equate fiction stories to real life. It's a matter of personal taste and what you are willing or want to tolerate in the books you read. We all have different opinions and preferences when it comes to the kind of books we enjoy, so it's important to respect and remember that it's just a book!!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout. I'm leaving this review of my own accord.

I'm not sure how to rate this, so this book won't have a star rating. But if I'd to it would definitely be a 2☆. Underwhelming is a good word to describe this book, also "assumptions, assumptions, assumptions" all the way, leaving the reader with little to no important information about anything and everything.

The prose dragged on and it bored me. It felt like the authors filled the (weak) plot with a lot of nothing. The world-building was a collection of clichés pieced together to resemble something, though I’m still not sure what that was. Besides the poor world-building, the side-characters and towners sucked very very bad! And the magicbookshop was Meh.
I could list all the things that made me cringe and (in my opinion) were below mediocre, but that would take too much of my time, since it would cover pretty much the entire book. Not even talking about that ending lol.

The intimate scene was an example of "What Not To Do", and it left me quite disturbed, ngl. With no convo or communication whatsoever. But there's also a ton of "What Not To Do" when it comes to the world-building, btw.

*prepare for rant n.1*
The grandmother is described as an old-school witch, so why is she using a Sage Bundle for cleansing? She even instructs her grandchild to use it on himself, which he does (but was probably because she’s an authoritarian tyrant). However, this feels like a case of cultural appropriation. The main cast isn’t BIPOC -far from it, aside from one character described as having "ebony skin" ("...Nomi’s ebony skin offset by her white robes..."). What also bothered me was the use of Indigenous rituals without proper context! It seems to me that derives from total ignorance. To make matters worse, the story seems to be set in a place that feels either like the U.K. (or the northeastern U.S.? Idk 🙄 this book was unnecessarily vague all the time!). So why is this "community" of witches (as they call themselves) relying on Native American rituals? Is it because the authors thought this trend of using a bundle of sage for cleasing was so popular that they had to include it? Besides witches have magic! Right? So why include a "trend" that was used as a sense of spirituality? (I’m intentionally avoiding the term "new age," since it has connections to white supremacy). And I know that in other ancient cultures they used sage for whatever however they saw fit...but since there's no way to know the origin of this community and its people, it all becomes rather meaningless (specially without any context!). Don't get me wrong I'm not judging people, just the authors' unoriginal and ignorant choices! And I am a person who enjoys reading and learning about the spiritual-themed stuff, but it's one thing for individuals to respectfully read and practice whatever spirituality stuff their respectful heart desires, but a book with magic as a main theme and (assuming here) with a mainly white cast using Indigenous culture without proper acknowledgement... Nah, doesn’t feel right. (TO ME personally).
Ultimately, it feels like the witches—and consequently the authors—weren’t original or creative enough to come up with their own methods. It felt like lazy writing, when it came to the "magical" world-building!
I think this was a very poor choice on the authors' part, because to me it came across like "a group of naive high schoolers" writing fanfiction based on a Z-list romance movie they saw.

Now, about the MCs: Lorin's characterization comes off as depressed, and his entire arc focuses on his depression and self-pity (also the “tough love”/abuse his grandmother subjected him to in his childhood). Now to Kit. Kit is ... humm ... is....🤔what?... he's a fox - an arctic one at that! Well, obviously I don't know much about Kit, unless that he's your immature cliché sunshine.
What about knowing the MCs on a superficial level? oh yeah definitely, we got that covered. Uninteresting banal stuff that does not in any way portrays our MCs.

About the side-characters: My biggest issue was with Lorin's grandmother.
*prepare for rant n.2*
It all started with the way she manipulates Lorin with guilt and coercion to get what she wants him to do! Her behavior is abusive (low or high - abuse is abuse!), and no amount of "tough love" justifies her actions. I believe the term “tough love” is often just an excuse for abusive behavior. I think that’s what the authors were aiming for with the strict authoritarian "tough love" maternal figure. However, I’m not sure they executed it well, since all it did was make me feel disgusted with the "poor self-sacrificing grandma" (boohoo -.-).
Hurt people hurt people. Of course, sure, okay... Honestly what this terrible character (that eventually redeems herself imagine that) reminded me was that: blood family is overrated! Specially the toxic kind.
(I might be projecting a bit here 👀👉👈).

Anyways, I cannot recommend this book, unless you enjoy major disappointments, generally speaking! And specially when you're expecting a romance story and all you got was harmful and ignorant assumptions about sex and intimacy! (lorin's + kit's "romance" bits were ridiculous!). The worst "fated mates" I've EVER read!

Only at 6% and really not liking grandma. Respect is earned, not automatically given to elders and she's not showing anything to be respectful for. Also don't guilt trip your grandson just because you raised him.

At 28% one thing interesting happened in a blip and done. Back to Lorin and his grandma bickering. The bickering is getting old fast.

38% Lorin is loosing his mind and I can't stop laughing. Maybe there's hope for this book after all.

41% So now something happened and Lorin is on the track to helping Kit.

48% A breakthrough has Lorin and Kit communicating. Naked body contact is a plus.

66% It's dragging again. Not a lot happening. Could've cut some out and still had the same story.

74% Interesting news is found at the local library and quickly followed by horrifying news.

80% Sexy times finally happen which changes Lorin and Kit's relationship in more ways than one.

85% Now we're on the way to solving the big mystery.

93% Kit and Lorin make a huge find that impacts Kit tremendously.

Epilogue tied everything up nicely.

This was a hard one for me to rate as there were several places that it was slow, kind of boring and I wanted to DNF. I'm glad I kept going as it is an interesting story with some really good parts. I just felt like there was a lot of filler that could've been removed and still had a good story. The story has a nice arc, definitely tied in well with the Tarot series and ended well too. I thought that Lorin and Kit had good chemistry. I liked how they continued to work to solve Kit's problem. I definitely think the one sex scene was too glossed over. There wasn't really any prep considering it was Kit's first time and they aren't into pain. It was also a we're doing this, a few touches, penetration and done. I wouldn't even consider it to have any heat. I didn't really like grandma even at the end. She didn't redeem herself from the beginning IMO. I really liked Glenn. He seemed like the pushy neighbor that crosses boundaries but everyone likes so they just let it be. I think he'd be a good MC for a future book. There was a note found at the witches compound that kind of left a side quest hanging. Better to have not mentioned it than to mention it and not resolve it.

Fated mates but with some obstacles to slow the burn.

I found this quite enjoyable, thought both characters were well-rounded and relatable, and got quite caught up in their story.

This has a lot of soft domestic aspects, as well as domestic magic which I love, and I enjoyed the premise of the magic world built here with the witches and their different callings, as well as the flower symbology around the bonding ritual. I could see the author developing on this setting in other books - and perhaps they already have, I've just not read any of their other works yet, though I own a few which I'll get around to after this positive experience.

It narrowly avoided becoming frustrating: the moment my patience started to wear thin was precisely when the author cleared up the annoyance, but I think this was probably a bit longer than it needed to be.

Tropes: cursed, I'll convince you to love me (determined/reluctant), mage/familiar, tragic parental death, can't communicate, fated mates, slowburn

Just wow. This story has a beautiful nuance that just pulls you in from the first chapter. I have read a lot of fated mates stories and yet can say I have not read one quite like this one. Lorin is a witch who doesn't want it and doesn't want a familiar after the tragic passing of his parents. But when the call to come home is too strong, he returns and participates in a familiar summoning where he gets Kit. Kit has been trapped kn his shifter form with his only hope finding his mate.
Let's just say the path isn't easy, but wow, is it magical. The Magic Shop and the Owner help Lorin find his way to his roots and his overall gift. When he comes into this, he is able to help Kit be free and solve the mysteries of his past. This book is that perfect combination of heart, humor, and intrigue that will keep you enthralled the entire journey. It's well worth a read.

🌟 For a decade, Lorin built his life in the city, far from his heritage, to avoid the fate destined for any witch, which could lead to pain and even death, as was the case with his parents. Returning to his roots, to his grandmother’s house where he grew up, his greatest fear came true, bonding with another being. This whirlwind of emotions, facing his fears and the very thing he dreaded most, combined with dealing with the pain of losing his parents, and the few moments of love he had with them that he didn't remember, left Lorin shattered.

▪︎FAV QUOTES▪︎
■ Lorin: "...His eyes were burning with the need to cry again, but he didn’t think he had the strength anymore."

■ Lorin: "An embrace that was stolen from him before he was old enough to remember what it felt like."

❄️ Kit ached for Lorin. It broke my heart to see Kit trying to comfort Lorin, showing that he was no longer alone, that Kit would be by his side forever.

▪︎FAV QUOTES▪︎
■ Kit: "...Or…not really happy, but not this broken, crying shell of a human Kit was trying to calm down."

💛🧡❤ The honesty and bond in their relationship are so precious to both of them. They're so beautiful together.
I loved seeing their daily routine, the way they always care for each other and make sure to be present. It made me feel so cozy and loved.

▪︎FAV QUOTES▪︎
■ "Lorin gathered him up in gentle arms, cradling him close.
“I’ll fix this. I promise,” he whispered into his fur."

🌼 I really liked Glenn's approach, besides being a "sunshine" in person. I liked how, while talking (or rather imposing the conversation😅) with Lorin, he showed him that, contrary to what Lorin thought, that he had to stay in Olak'Hollow, his plans could actually involve returning to the city where he had his job and home, as many witches do. I felt the character was very special, he made me want more of him. I loved the nickname he gave Kit, so endearing.

▪︎FAV QUOTES▪︎
■ Kit: "Kit giggled louder and called, “Away! Away!”
“Kitty Kat!” Glenn said, scandalized. “Not you too! Lorin has been teaching you bad habits.' "

🤩 I loved the enigmatic character, The Owner (I have a crush on this character😅). In this book, I felt the connection perfectly between the main characters, the magic shop, and the story.

This fantasy world is well-crafted, very well written and the side characters are interesting, but what captivated me most was the library and its connection to Lorin.

🤔 For an MM adult story, it's a very, very slow-burn with a bit of a lack of steam. I wanted to see more of that mischievous Kit.

I received this book as a gift from the author via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving this review.

Sweet & witchy paranormal romance

Found in Obscurity is an absolutely adorable paranormal romance, with a witch scared of his power, an incredibly cute fox shifter familiar stuck in his animal form, family to rescue, and an evil coven to bring down.

I couldn't put it down!

It's low on spice with one, not very detailed 🌶 scene. Super cute with all the feels though.

What a beautiful story. Loved Kit in his fox form. So cheeky. Whilst this story was a little slower than what I am used to, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I consider this a YA novel and that's not a bad thing. There is little to no steam but there is all heart and devotion.
A wonderful story when you want something light to read.

oh my GOSH what a magical story. i love lorin and kit so dang much and this was SUCH a unique play on the fated mates trope. the book can definitely get a little heavy at times but there’s also so much humor and romance and magic. i loved the mystery surrounding kit and was gripped from the first chapter. reluctant witch x foxy familiar = so dang cute!! was not expecting to get so emotional reading this tho. absolutely stunning novel

Going home

Lorin and Kit's journey to each other was a tumultuous one. Filled with fear and loss as they worked to free Kit and Lorin worked on finally accepting who he is meant to be. The Hermit found his mate and his purpose, and it was glorious.

4.5 stars. Another impressive and really original addition to this excellent series. I loved the double hurt/comfort, and the characters fit beautifully together. The magic system was really interesting, and Lorin's discovery of his gifts was well thought out. The Hermit was a really fitting card.

I really enjoyed this book. A.M. did an amazing job showcasing Lorin’s emotions and I’m not gonna lie I did cry at some parts because holy cow MY EMOTIONS! Kit is 10 out of 10 adorable. There’s so many parts I wanna gush about but spoilers are bad UGH! Just know there’s some pretty cool things in here that, in my opinion, make it stand out among other magic books. The journey of self discovery in this story perfectly represents The Hermit Upright perfectly. It shows the highs and lows of the journey as well.
Good Job Lovely’s!.

Tales from the Tarot is an amazing paranormal series, serving up such a wide selection of 22 stories and authors that’s it’s impossible not to find a great book to read, and share.

I’m including in that tally the quite marvelous Found in Obscurity by A. M. Rose, a tale about a young man, a witch, who has to make a decision to embrace his true nature before he can find his roots, his destiny, and his future happiness.

Rose has done an excellent job in creating multiple elements of this story, ones guaranteed to fully pull the reader into the universe and narrative.

It begins with the young man,Lorin, who’s spent 12 years evading his destiny, his history, his town, and the powerful grandmother who had raised him. But as the story opens, the marks of his heritage have appeared on clawed hands, and Rose details, with incredible emotion and intensity, the changes that are coming to him.

It’s a two person point of view storyline, so we alternate between Lorin as he reluctantly returns to home to Oak’s Hollow and his waiting grandmother. The other voice belongs to Kit, Kit, a artic fox familiar and shifter, who’s arrived because of the impending town wide bonding ritual.

The author weaves a haunting magical mystery through a growing renewal of his relationship between Lorin, his grandmother and the magical nature that is his birthright, that of being a witch. But Lorin must also face his past, accept Kit , and the town where he was born. It’s a town that Rose has vividly imagined and feels every bit as real as the beautifully imagined characters we grow so close to.

I couldn’t put the book down, and when the story was over, all I could think about was how many more stories of the universe Rose had created I wanted told.

What a pleasure to read. Highly recommended.

A final note. Rose took the central theme of the tarot, in this case The Hermit, upright position, as well as The Owner and The Magic Shop as part of the narrative in an extremely effective manner. Just excellent!

This wasn't really up my alley.

It's a very slow and cozy book. My ADHD just makes it impossible for me to do slow though. There's not a lot that happens in the first 50% of the book. Just a lot of researching, testing stuff, and failing. I honestly checked out more for the last half of the book skimming a bit more.
Like obviously the world isn't gonna serve up the solution on a platter but it was a bit painful to read through.

Since this is part of the Tales from the Tarot series, I thought it embodied the Hermit card alright. The part where the Magic Shop owner literally is like, oh look within you, was a bit on the nose.
The magic system in the world isn't explained very much. I liked the tattoos on the fingers though symbolizing different spells.

The ending felt a bit rushed, everything just kind of worked out. Like I guess a creepy guy in the woods following them would be a

Lorin was kind of annoying for me. He doesn't know what he wants and part of his journey is figuring that out. He's scared of connection so he runs away from things. He makes concessions and then complains about it afterwards. He's described in the book as petulant and times because of it. Just because the book is self aware though doesn't make it better for me. Things just kind of fall into place for him when he does make the effort.
Kit, I'm not entirely sure about. I mean at first he's just a fox, but after he gains his ability to shift back, he almost seems infantilized? Like he has a fox & a human heart so he's always going to be kind of playful and mischievous. However, other than closer to the end where his goal is to save his family, he doesn't seem to have much agency.

Their relationship is kind of cute, they're there for each other when they need each other the most. It's sweet. Again though, this book just probably wasn't for me!

The plot of this book was so unique and interesting, and I liked Lorin and Kit, both as characters and as a couple. But there were some issues with the book. It's never fully explained why half the town dislikes Lorin. Just for having left the witch community for a time? Granted, Lorin was afraid of his witch powers, but he was traumatized. He wasn't only suffering grief from losing his parents so young but the way they both died at the same time due to being soulbound scared him badly. Even his grandma who raised him for most of his life didn't seem to have any empathy for him at all and how mean she was to him just got brushed aside in the book rather than truly resolved. So, that huge issue aside, there was an important conversation that Lorin and Kit should have had before they had sex for the first time like what roles they each wanted, what experience they each did or didn't have, and what kind of protection they wanted or if it was necessary. Then, the sex scene itself was not only brief but confusing. How does Lorin who has really sharp nails as a witch prepare Kit? Lube isn't mentioned, but I'm hoping that was just because the authors didn't mention its existence and not that there wasn't any used. There was also no aftercare mentioned, and the next morning, Kit just bounces out the door and shifts without any soreness or mention of wanting a shower. Other than those minor things, I really liked how their relationship slowly developed and how sweet they both were, and I loved how they made friends with Glenn and became friendly with the bakery worker and the librarian. They also visit The Magic Shop and meet The Owner early on in the book, and Lorin gets dealt his Tarot card, The Hermit. I wouldn't mind reading more about this witch community and the shifters they helped rescue though. Maybe the younger witches could help move the community forward so that it meshed with the modern world better.

Spooky season is here everyone and with it comes this absolute gem of a paranormal romance, featuring a reluctant witch, the most adorable sunshine arctic fox shifter, the mystery of how he has been cursed to remain stuck in his fox form, and all the cosy cottage witch vibes my little heart desired.

Lorin is a grumpy sad boy of a witch who is still dealing with the grief of losing his parents when he was very young and is afraid of what being a witch could mean. He is stubborn but once he starts opening up his heart to Kit and the potential of the future as witch and familiar (and mates!), he becomes really caring and sweet. Watching him find where he belongs and start to heal from his loss was really lovely and I thought it was beautifully written. The whole thing felt like a warm hug.

Kit, despite having suffered so much being cursed and forced to stay in his fox form for years, is the sweetest sunshine bean ever! 10/10 would have him as my familiar. He is dramatic and playful and really cute. I laughed so much at his antics and how he responded to being taken to the vet when they all thought he was a normal fox! He is also very kind and just wants to look after his mate. I love him, Your Honour!

I can hear you asking if this is actually a romance if Kit is stuck in his fox form and all I’ll say is yes! As the story progresses, things change and Lorin and Kit fall in love and are the most adorable couple. You will not be disappointed!

This is a low angst, low heat, high sweetness tale of finding your person and doing anything for the ones you love. It’ll make you laugh and choke you up with emotion in equal measure, and I absolutely recommend it for any fans of paranormal romance or cosy mystery.

Kit & Lorin
An interesting story idea behind a shifter whose shifting has been magically taken away from him, and a reluctant witch who is struggling to accept a bonded familiar.

Kit is incredibly sweet, and beautiful in fox form. His human form is a little more mysterious as we continue to uncover his background in the story. Lorin is a stubborn witch who lost his parents at a very young age, and basically hates his magic and what it could do to upend his life/future.

I love the idea of Lorin's assigned calling (Pathfinder). An interesting concept that's not often covered in witch-based stories (at least not what I've read). It's not something I've heard of, but it sounds like it definitely would be a valuable position to have in a magical society.

Watching Lorin walk through his parent's room in the cabin is a trial of emotions, both happy and heartbreaking. His parents sounded wonderful, and I hate that he lost them so early.

I understand the reasoning behind the title, but am disturbed all the same. The way it comes about is distressing, but necessary.

I loved experiencing Found in Obscurity! It was an amazing tale with a lot of interesting story to follow. The characters were all amazing (I loved Lorin's grandmother & Glenn) and the visuals brought to life by A.M. Rose were beautiful and alluring. I had no trouble staying engaged and entertained in the story.

I received an advance copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

Found in Obscurity is the 10th book in the 22 book multi author series Tales From The Tarot serves to represent The Hermit card from the tarots Major Arcana. When presented in the upright position The Hermit is seeking for knowledge that comes from within. He is withdrawn, wondering in his own solitude which searching for himself. When The Hermit is reversed it indicates that there is lonliness, and the seclusion that has the potential to be harmful not only to him but to others around him. There is a great need for him to return to society to find a proper balance.

Lorin who is the perfect example of The Hermit has retuned to his hometown after avoiding his family heritage for years. In the beginning of the book he represents the reverse represensation, he has secluded himself to the point of loneliness. His seclusion has cut himself off from his family, causing pain not only for himself but for the people who love him. Kit has been isolated against his will, stuck in his familiar form he is alone searching for his mate, searching for a way back to humanity.

What I love about this book is that despite his pain and trauma Kit is caring and provides comfort to Lorin as he struggles to face his fears and finds himself in order to become a better witch. In the beginning of the book I was so frustrated with Lorin and his aversion to everything, but as the story goes on you begin to understand the reason for his fear and cannot help but to feel for him. The relationship is cute and wholesome, really enjoy the bond that forms between them, making them the lovable characters that they are. 10/10 would recommend this read!

Found in Obscurity by A.M. Rose pulls readers into a world where magic isn’t just about spells—it’s about identity, connection, and self-acceptance. Lorin’s struggle with his witch heritage, and Kit’s heartbreaking plight as a shifter trapped in his animal form, weave together in a story that is equal parts emotional and exciting.

The writing is captivating, balancing vivid descriptions of magic with a deep exploration of Lorin and Kit’s internal conflicts. The spice is handled tastefully, adding a layer of intimacy to their bond without overwhelming the narrative. Rose manages to write these moments in a way that feels natural and meaningful, elevating their connection.

While the twists in the plot are somewhat predictable, they don’t detract from the overall enjoyment. Instead, they offer a sense of anticipation that makes the reveals feel earned rather than surprising. What really shines is the cleverness in how the story unfolds—the subversion of expectations, the depth of the characters, and the richly developed world-building.

Found in Obscurity is an engaging, well-written, and emotionally satisfying read. The predictable twists are the only minor flaw in an otherwise stellar novel. Highly recommended for fans of fantasy romance who appreciate smart storytelling and genuine character development.

Kit and Lorin's story is one full of heartbreak, loss, love, and self discovery. Their story is also quite adorable!

In the beginning of this story Lorin wants nothing to do with his magic. He doesn't want to use his magic, and he most definitely doesn't want a familiar... Or so he thought. Throughout the course of this book, and with the help of adorable and mischievous Kit, he learns that having magic isn't as awful as he once thought.

Kit's backstory is heartbreaking. Due to despicable people using their magic in a horrendous way, he's not only separated from his family but also forced to stay in his animal form. And while he loves being his fox, he would also like to have his choice back on whether he wants to be his human form or his animal one.

I liked the mysterious component of this story surrounding the coven who casted that horrific spell upon Kit. I also enjoyed seeing Lorin discover who he truly is, and accepting the uniqueness of his magic. Him being able to see things that no one else could was fascinating, I really enjoyed that aspect of the story!

This story is beautiful, and full of adorable cuteness! I love the twist on fated mates, and I also enjoyed how Kit and Lorin weren't just a witch and familiar, but that they were also mates as well. I loved this story and thought it was truly fantastic!

The journey these two men go on is full of warmth, acceptance, strength, a bit of confusion, self discovery, and plenty of love.

5⭐️ 1🌶️
MOOD: lighthearted, emotional, mysterious
TROPES: hurt/comfort-lite, grumpy/sunshine-lite, Fated mates
GENRES: Fantasy, Contemporary, Paranormal - Romance
FAV QUOTE: "All the answers you seek are within yourself. "How can they be when I don't know them?! I asked for guidance."

MAIN CHARACTERS: Lorin and Kit
TAROT CARD: The Hermit

THE GOOD: I loved this book and I'm sad it's over. Lorin and Kit work well together but more importantly for their characters, they work well apart. They each have their own stories and struggles and growth which helps them work together. The take on witches and familiars and shifters was an interesting one. While you don't get to explore much of Oak Hollow the characters you do meet are interesting and unique and could have stories of their own. This was the first A.M. Rose book that I read and I would definitely read more. Oh, and the Tarot Card message works and comes across clear which I have found isn't the case for all the books I've read in this series.
THE NEUTRAL: Since I read an ARC, I think there was a typo in the prologue and the wrong name was on the POV
THE MEH: The descriptive language in the 🌶️ scene made me laugh. sorry. It wasn't bad or cringe it was very lovely and matched the tone of the book but it took me out of the story for a second.

CW: emotional abuse, physical abuse, kidnapping/abduction, death of parents
DISCLAIMER: I received an advance review copy. This is my honest review.

Two lost souls finding each other. What I like about the story was you get a slow burn, mystery, and finding out who they really are. Lorin and Kit are a perfect match. Both of them obsessed with one another. I like how each of them comfort one another. How they are always there for the other one when they are falling apart. They have grown so much since beginning. Also after being alone for a long time they found comfort in each other. Lorin character has change so much from not wanting to witch. To now finally embracing it to help his mate. I love that he is so caring for everyone around him. And that he’s finally able to be himself without hating himself. Kit is an amazing character from all the pain that happened in the past. He never gave up on hope and finding his mate. Now he is able to be himself again and gain the strength to move forward. I also like that he took care of Lorin in the beginning. Kit’s personality is great for Lorin because they are the opposites and they know how complement each other. And for the side characters, they are amazing because of how supportive and helping they are. And the ending of the book I love the fact that they finally found happiness and a family.

“Found in Obscurity” is a wonderful tale of magic, mystery, and heartfelt romance. Lorin’s reluctance to embrace his heritage as a born witch felt so relatable, especially as he tries to distance himself from the world of magic he abandoned years ago. His return to his hometown, and the unexpected appearance of Kit, a charming familiar trapped in his fox form, added an incredible sense of fate to the story.

Kit’s character is irresistible—his determination to break the spell and win over his mate, even though Lorin initially wants nothing to do with him, created a perfect slow-burn tension. The way their relationship grows, filled with moments of vulnerability and passion, felt organic and truly touching. I also loved the darker, more sinister plotline that kept the stakes high as Kit tries to reclaim his humanity.

The author’s vivid descriptions of magic and emotion are beautifully balanced, making this more than just a romance—it’s an enchanting story of self-discovery, trust, and destiny. “Found in Obscurity” is a beautifully crafted, emotionally charged story you won’t want to miss!

Found in Obscurity is another fantastic installment in the Tales from the Tarot series.

The story follows Lorin, a witch trying to outrun his birthright and Kit, a fox shifter stuck in his shift. When Lorin makes a deal to attend a bonding ceremony in exchange for a chance at the future he thinks he wants, he is shocked when he bonds with an arctic fox familiar. For his part, Kit is thrilled to be bonded with a witch who might be able to help him regain control of his shift.

There are a few bumps along the way as Lorin learns to appreciate who he is and Kit's true nature is revealed, along with a sinister plot at the center of Kit's trauma.

Kit is probably the most adorable character I have ever read. The authors did a fantastic job showing Kit's fox nature in his mischievous personality and antics. I can't say enough about him and how much I adored his character. What he went through was awful, but he maintained his pure heart and bright soul through it all.

I also really liked Lorin, who was a bit of a grump to Kit's sunshine. He wanted absolutely nothing to do with magic and especially nothing to do with familiars, which was understandable given his past. Seeing Lorin come into his own for Kit's sake, then truly embracing who he is was everything. Kit and Lorin were perfect for each other.

The story was engaging and interesting. First, it was a question of how Kit was going to communicate with Lorin and how Lorin would respond, then it was one twist after another of uncovering the plot of what's happened to Kit. I couldn't put it down.

I wanted to cry when the book was over, I was not ready to say goodbye to Kit and Lorin! I really hope we see more of these two.

“But you walked this path by yourself. I was just waiting at the end of it so we could walk the rest together.”

Thank you so much for sending me the arc copy of this!

This was a unique story, one I don’t think I’ve really crossed before. It did take me a little minute to get into it, but as Lorin started to enjoy his manic the more I got into the book.

I loved how Kit and Lorin came together, how they found each other at the bonding ceremony and slowly grew closer and closer together.

I liked Lorins journey of embracing himself and his magic and regaining the relationship with his grandma.

Kit was a sweetie, I loved his mischievous fox side, that even showed when he was human.

Grandma was funny I loved her character, and how she tried to get Lorin to stand on his own two feet as well as show sympathy and helping him when it most counted.

I really did enjoy this story as well as the unique plot.

🌟🌟🌟🌟

The Hermit card, upright, represents a period of introspection, meditation and looking inside yourself for answers. Reversed it represents exile, loneliness, withdrawing from family and society. The Owner drew the card upright, but I think that this story, at a third the way through, the reversed representation was more apt.
Found is well written. Great worldbuilding. The authors did a great job with Kit catching the playful mischief fox familiars are known for. Did not much care for Lorin's grandmother. She was important to the story, but what a crank. I'd love for Glenn to get a book. And then there's Lorin. Confused, depressed, lost. And depressing. Things did pick up when he found a purpose, freeing his mate.
The added touch of mystery just made the book darker.
Not a fun read for me. I have read other books by these authors, which I enjoyed very much. So I'm going to say, wrong book, wrong time. BTW, the reason for the five star review was that Kit was so darn cute in fox form.

This is a new to me author and I really enjoyed this book. This is the story of Lorin and Kit. Lorin is a witch who has walked away from witchcraft and is trying to have a normal life. When he is pulled back to his hometown, he is not happy about it. He reaches a deal with his grandmother. One ceremony and then he gets to leave. Kit is an artic fox shifter who has been cursed. He is hoping that finding his witch will break the curse. The two meet and there are strong emotions. Kit of happiness and Lorin of despair. With a familiar, Lorin is trapped in the world of magic. But when Lorin learns that Kit is a shifter that has been trapped, he digs right into try and put things right. This is their story. I loved Kit. He was warm, energetic and happy no matter what form he took. And when we learn Lorin's reasons for not wanting to be a witch, I understood his actions a lot better. This book is well written and easy to read. I really enjoyed it.
