April 30, 2024It is the silent Serb and the alluring Ayana! King of Envy is releasing March 25th, 2025! It will be GREEN! All we know is that it's gonna be an interesting marriage trope cause Ayana is already (fake) engaged to another man (and Vuk's old college friend, no less)! But that just means we'll be getting iconic jealousy scenes I'm sure! Also can we talk about all the little hints we got about Vuk Markovic in this book?!

May 20, 202405.20.24: Further Pre-Release Thoughts
I feel like I am going to ruffle a lot of feathers when I say this but this is how I feel and I'm sorry if it offends anyone but I don't know if I'm being too sensitive but I've been thinking about this a lot lately, ever since reading other books with BIPOC FMCs that had much better representation to be completely honest with you.
I think it's distasteful to make the only representation of black women / mixed women in Ana Huang's books be a beautiful celebrity archetype. Black and mixed women are so much more than just their appearances. And when you make the only two representations of black and mixed women be an influencer and a model that's really messed up.
I think Ana perpetuates stereotypes a lot. When it comes to her Asian characters like Vivian or Kai, they get to speak a lot of languages, play musical instruments, and be the type of obedient studious characters that uphold the model minority. She literally made Josh a doctor and had Isabella have family drama because she wanted to be a writer. But when it comes to the black and mixed people she wants to be in this world that she's created, in this space for the rich elite, it's as a supermodel and an influencer (and of course they have white boyfriends that are billionaires and love playing the hero. Maybe that's not a white savior boyfriend, but it is a white boyfriend who likes to play savior).
I'm not denying that black women aren't gorgeous. I just think that black and mixed bodies get fetishized all too often and that it wouldn't hurt for Ana Huang to create a black FMC who was a lawyer, or CTO, or congresswoman etc. And it just doesn't sit right with me that the only two times that black women get some type of representation in her books, it's the tall beautiful woman who gets objectified (as a career) and has men obsessing over her.
Of course this book isn't out yet, so I have no idea what Ayana is like but I do know the Ana Huang formula to creating a bestseller. Also, guess what, my opinion won't change if Ayana isn't black but is a dark skinned POC because it would still be true that Ana Huang made the only dark skinned person and mixed person in her books get famous for being pretty. I don't mention Alessandra because it's obvious she's partially based on Gisele Bundchen, but why is it that everyone from the global South is beautiful like a supermodel and that's their claim to fame but the Ava's, Vivian's, Isabella's, Kai's, and Josh's get to be multi-talented nerds. Could it be that she's... perpetuating racial stereotypes???

Can't wait for Vuk, Sebastian, and Killian to join this list and see where they rank! I personally think Vuk might be even richer than Xavier and that since Killian is a tech billionaire he might be the richest overall. Since Sebastian's is in the restaurant industry I see him in the lower third (more than Christian but less than Kai who is a mixed media/entertainment billionaire). But those are just my guesses!

04/29/24: (before I start King of Sloth)… I HEARD A RUMOR IT’S ABOUT VUK (THE SERBIAN). The streets better not be lying. He and Roman have been the only characters that have shown up in the series thus far that I’ve actually wanted to read a book about. Will now go off to read KOS closely for Vuk mentions. I’ll report back after I’m done to see if this was in fact true!
