Lies That Bleed
For tonight, we either lived or died in The Wilds. Nothing else mattered.
As the daughter of the emperor, Aisling Everhart was born into privilege. She has trained her entire life to go into The Wilds and have a chance at bonding with a creature that can give her unknown power. Thank you to NerdFam for the digital ARC. This might have been 3 stars for me, but as a POC I found the racial-coding to be discomforting.
This was an easy read that walked the line between being an AU vs a fan-fic of Fourth Wing. I found the divergences interesting enough to keep reading. Aisling is the Emperor's first child and heir to enter a Threshing-like ceremony where she will be allowed to enter The Wilds and bond with a magical creature. The other participants are chosen by lottery system, and if they succeed in bonding a strong enough creature then they will secure a high position in the imperial army. But the contestants are just as likely to k:ll each other as the creatures are likely to k:ll them. The bonds formed reminded me of daemon/souls in 'The Golden Compass' and the embers that their magic manipulated works similarly to first-light in 'The Crescent City' series. Military service is the highest position in this civilization.
My issue however, is that the imperial people 'Amerseans' are white-coded and conquered people called 'Imbrians' are brown-coded, almost distinctly Indian.
Even though the Imbrian competitors become her allies, and she learns that they are good people, it wasn't enough to compensate for the way that the world-building was set up. Their fallen prince is her love interest as opposed to the blonde male she is expected to pursue. His signature scent is cardamon and ginger. I don't think it was malicious, but it was pervasive. It's one of the reasons I think this novel needed additional editing and sensitivity work.

Ya know what? I'm sold. The writing isn't the most sophisticated, but I really liked this story. The male love interest, Kohen, does some VERY good yearning and pining for our FMC. The FMC is a little annoying but not unbearable. Kohen also has a power that I've never seen in a romantasy like this before.
I'd recommend this! It's a very quick read. The writing is not bad or particularly good, but it's worth it! All of the magical creatures were awesome.
Side note - I had a hard time picturing Liana. In my mind, I could only picture an angry looking Big Bird. Or maybe pidgey from Pokemon lol

Holy freaking moly. This was such a GREAT start to a new fantasy series. Aisling is the daughter of the emperor Amersea and it’s finally her chance to enter The Wilds and bond with a creature. After her time in The Wilds she enters a month long boot camp to train to become spoilers for her father’s Imperial Fleet. Her sworn enemy, the son of an overthrown king, happens to be there as well. If you want to know what happens next you’ll have to read to find out!
This is easily one of my favorite reads of the year. It’s a lighter fantasy and has more modern day feel with a fantasy twist. I loved Ash’s character, she’s a strong independent female heir and wants to earn the respect of her peers that she will one day lead. Don’t even get me started on THE ENDING! How am I supposed to go on not knowing what happens next for months until books two?!
This is such a great fantasy read for both expects in the genre and new fantasy readers. I highly recommend this one for everyone.

Holy hells!!
I absolutely love this world. The world-building isn't overwhelming, making it perfect for someone dipping their toes into fantasy for the first time. "Lies That Bleed" reminded me of a mix between Hunger Games, Divergent, and Fourth Wing, which I loved!
Aisling is a badass FMC. I adore her fierce loyalty to her friend Tetra. I also love Tetra and loved the disability and chronic pain rep. It felt authentic and added another layer to the many complex characters that are in this story. The war training, magical creatures, and forbidden lovers elements were all fantastic additions to the story. I especially enjoy morally gray characters, and Kohen definitely fits that bill. *sigh*

This was a strong book one. This is a lighter fantasy so it would be a decent pick for someone who is a beginner in fantasy books. It has the classic Hunger Games/Divergent vibes with a little Fourth Wing mixed in as well. It hold its own though. It’s unique enough that I still really enjoyed it.
Ash is a fun FMC. I feel like she’s going to have some rude awakenings soon though. Kohen was throwing up nothing but green flags in my eyes. Was he a bit overly possessive? Sure but I love him so it’s ok.
I’m excited to see where this series goes. The supporting characters are all really great along with all their bonded animals. And with that cliffhanger, I’m ready for book 2!

I am obsessed. This was such a great start to a new series. As someone who isn’t a huge fantasy reader this was perfect for me. I liked that the world building was easy to follow and not overly complex while still remaining interesting.
I loved Aisling, she is such a strong, fierce, badass FMC. And Kohen, ahh I just loved him too. He seems like the total package, you know, aside from the whole being the son of Aisling’s father’s enemy thing. I feel like he is so misjudged and I am looking forward to getting more of his backstory in the future as well as seeing where the story goes after that cliffhanger. I hope I don’t have to wait too long!

Thank you NerdFam and Leia Stone for this advanced copy! I went into a fantasy slump for several months and wanted to wait until I was out of my slump to give this an honest try.
4⭐️ - I had zero expectation going into this and hadn’t even read the description beforehand. This was SUCH a great read! Oh my gosh, I really loved it. It had quick, easy world building and the writing made it so easy to read at a fast pace. It had a unique military system where you entered your name into a Lottery, and if chosen you’re sent to The Wilds. There, you either bond with a creature to help you in battle, or you die. Then you and your creature fight in the war. This was so cool!
Aisling, the FMC and future empress, goes through this whole process and the end of the story is a battle. I don’t want to give more detail as it would spoil some things.
The ending will leave you hanging, wondering what’s going to happen next!

This was spectacular! I binged it in a day! It gave fourth wing vibes but more magical. The magic system and creatures stand out in this series. It’s spice free but there is amazing romantic tension! This is incredibly fast paced and action packed. I was never bored and the ending…I didn’t see that coming! Can’t wait to get my hands on book 2!

A fast paced, high-action fantasy.
Thoughts💡
What would happen if you mixed Fourth Wing with Shadow and Bone and framed it in a world similar to Solaria (Zodiac Academy)? You’d end up with something like this book. There were moments where you could clearly see the author’s inspiration but there were also some original and new (to me) dynamics that I am here for. I loved the girl bonds and positive female friendships, still want to high five Aisling for that 🥜🤜🏻 in the first chapter, and I’m honestly surprised at some of the twists. I really thought I had some of the characters pegged.

the idea & plot are there, but the execution is lacking. something about this felt weird. the fmc is just straight disrespectful to the other culture in this book. i get she’s brainwashed by her daddy, but she’s the heir/princess, wouldn’t you think she’d be taught some manners or something?? she straight up calls them terrorists & does it frequently? and is just rude for no reason…. the mmc wasn’t bad, he’s big strong and hot. they both just lacked substance really. conversations feel flat.
also it jumps around a lot & info dumps you at the oddest times.

My mind is blown 🤯 This was phenomenal!
Lies That Bleed is a slow burn romantasy that features a forbidden romance and magical creatures!
The plot was amazing. I was so immersed into this fictional world that I ended up reading the book all in one sitting. There was just always something happening in the book that there was never time for me to ever get bored. I even forgot my phone existed 😱
As I previously mentioned, this book is a SLOW burn. All we get the entire book is a couple of kisses from the main couple. Normally, I’m not a fan of slow burns that are this slow. However, the plot and the characters interactions were so engaging that it didn’t bother me. In fact, I felt like it made the book that much better. It left me wanting more and highly anticipating book 2.
Also can we take a moment to appreciate Kohen, the MMC. He was lethal, possessive, and the biggest green flag. I honestly cannot get enough of him and I can’t wait to see how his relationship with Ashling develops in book 2. I just know I’m gonna get hit with another slow burn though 😭
Overall, this book was absolutely amazing and I can’t wait for book 2! Thank you so much Leia for the ARC! 🫶

While I am rating this 3.5, I would continue the series and had a great time reading it. My reason for the 3.5 is that there was a lot of immature language in the book. The FMC is only 19, but some of the wording of things bothered me or didn’t seem to fit into a fantasy story. I also had a hard time imagining the setting of this book. There were cars and motorcycles, but no other urban fantasy type of technologies. I just couldn’t quite picture what time frame we were in.
All that to say, I read this book in two days. It moves very fast and it was a very engaging storyline. Aisling Everhart is the next heir to her kingdom. She is placed in very close proximity to the son of her enemy kingdom. This is a romantasy with bonded creatures, dragons, magic/powers, enemies to lovers, and a protective MMC.
There is no spice in book 1 and I am not sure if that will build or if this is meant to be in a more YA range.

Lies That Bleed is the first book in The Ember War series, which is new from Leia Stone.
Aisling Everhart is the daughter of the Emperor and poised to become Empress. She has trained her entire life and because of her position she is guaranteed a place in The Wilds to bond with a creature who will increase her power. Other candidates are drawn by lottery to also head to The Wilds, hoping for a chance of improving their station. It’s expected that Aisling will bond with the most powerful creature, but nothing more powerful than her father’s because she shouldn’t appear stronger than The Emperor. When Kohan Badshah is also selected to head into The Wild’s Aisling knows she needs to be careful. As her father’s sworn enemy, Aisling can’t be seen as aiding Kohen but when Kohen appears to be protecting Aisling, she grows confused and doesn’t know what to believe.
This entire story is an absolute delight to read. From the fight for your life dynamic when bonding with a creature to the forbidden romance elements. The high stakes of The Wilds are followed up with the cutthroat Military Academy environment and keeps the story moving at a fast pace. The story was action packed and really sets the series up well. I found the story line intriguing and with easy to understand world building. There were strong friendships and alliances being built that challenged the current societal expectations.

Aisling Everhart is the daughter of the Emperor and poised to become Empress. She has trained her entire life and because of her position she is guaranteed a place in The Wilds to bond with a creature who will increase her power. Other candidates are drawn by lottery to also head to The Wilds, hoping for a chance of improving their station. It’s expected that Aisling will bond with the most powerful creature, but nothing more powerful than her father’s because she shouldn’t appear stronger than The Emperor. When Kohan Badshah is also selected to head into The Wild’s Aisling knows she needs to be careful. As her father’s sworn enemy, Aisling can’t be seen as aiding Kohen but when Kohen appears to be protecting Aisling, she grows confused and doesn’t know what to believe.
This entire story is an absolute delight to read. From the fight for your life dynamic when bonding with a creature to the forbidden romance elements. The high stakes of The Wilds are followed up with the cutthroat Military Academy environment and keeps the story moving at a fast pace. The story was action packed and really sets the series up well. I found the story line intriguing and with easy to understand world building. There were strong friendships and alliances being built that challenged the current societal expectations.

What just happened to me? I just had the greatest experience reading this book and I can’t stop thinking about it.
Aisling Everhart is the eldest daughter and future empress. Her father is the emperor of Amersea. And today… is the Lottery. A drawing in which every Amersean citizen is invited once a year to put their name in. Only a small amount of people are selected and given a chance to enter The Wilds. An opportunity to bond with a creature and become more powerful in the ongoing war.
This Lottery is different. Because at 19… Aisling is finally ready to put her name in to the Lottery. It’s no surprise her name is called… she is the emperor’s daughter… but two surprises do happen. One, her best friend Tetra, who has a bad leg and needs to use a cane is called… even though she didn’t enter the Lottery… and two… Kohen Badshah… son of the former king of Imbria… a rival nation that they had gone to war with…. is also selected.
This story blew me away. From the very beginning of this book to the very last page you are given crumbs of information that are leading up to something incredibly epic. The way this author has created what feels like a fantasy romance mystery… is absolutely incredible. This was a page turner for sure.
There’s trials and boot camps that feel slightly Hunger Games coded but with way more fantasy and magical elements woven in. At the same time someone is trying to take Aisling out… and we don’t know who or what they are… but the constant looking over your shoulder the entirety if this book will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The bonding to these creatures is absolutely incredible. With a bond comes gained magical abilities… and it was really fascinating and very unique.
I won’t tell you what creature Aisling bonds to… but I will say this…
“I needed to be powerful enough to take over for my father, but not more powerful than him.”
How do you think that goes?
The father daughter relationship and dynamic in this book is sooo interesting. “I hated how I always felt like I was walking on ice with this man. My own father. He didn’t know when to stop being emperor and just be Dad.”
And then of course… there’s Kohen Badshah. Rival Prince… “My body wanted what I couldn’t have. It’s like it knew Kohen Badshah was the one man I couldn’t touch and I wanted to touch him. All over. A lot.”
Girl. Same.
I’m sorry but I was absolutely screaming every time this man was on the page.
The title… Lies That Bleed… is the only truth in the entire book. Every time you think you have a situation or person figured out you are thrown for an absolute loop and questioning the entire time.. who do you trust?? It was so frustrating yet so captivating.
Kohen is quiet, and introspective, incredibly protective, and our favorite… slightly possessive. “When I met Kohen’s eyes, I wasn’t prepared for the look he gave me. An expression that said he was hungry and I was a meal.”
There is a scene, where Aisling walks up to Kohen in front of everyone and kisses him passionately and then walks away… and then Aisling is in the hallway and Kohen says… “you think you can just kiss me like that and walk away?” He breathed, stepping closer to me as I backed up. Kohen raised his arms, boxing me in and leaned against the wall on his forearms. He pulled my left palm over his chest and I felt his heart beat wildly against my fingertips. “Aisling Everhart. “I crave you every moment of every day.”
There’s so many moments like this in the book that are slow burn… tension filled… make you want to scream… it’s almost unbearable but it’s absolutely delicious.
And I am the queen of damsel in distress. Give me a girl who absolutely needs saving at every moment of the day… I’m your girl. BUT… Aisling is already strong. She’s not a tiny damsel in distress. She’s trained her entire life to become empress and she’s incredible and put together. She’s still young and going to make some personal mistakes along the way but she’s so capable right off the bat, and I loved it and it was incredibly inspiring.
And that ending… all I can say is read this book. I have left SO MUCH out because you have to read and experience this book for yourself. Right now.

We went from “oh cool animals” to “this writing is… something” to “oh yeah my dad has to make sure I’m a virgin every year” to “bronze-skinned warriors = terrorists” and I’m out.

I liked the premise of this book. It is very heavily inspired by Fourth Wing, but with enough differences that it kept me reading. However, for me the execution, story crafting & solid writing wasn’t there. I think this could’ve been better if the author had done less telling and more showing through better story crafting. There was also a ton of repetition which got in the way of creating connection between the characters & connection to the reader. I do think with a little more time and editing this could have been better.

Lies that Bleed, The Ember War Book 1, by Leia Stone is a New Adult Romantasy that’s very much Fourth Wing meets The Hunger Games.
I am obsessed 👏 @leiastoneauthor is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors and I cannot help but devour her books. The world and character building was on point and the ending has set us up for, what I anticipate to be, an epic series.
I also love how she made a Phoenix 🐦🔥 the main magical creature in this. I feel dragons normally get all the spotlight when it comes to the fantasy genre, and while I love me some dragons, I loved seeing more mythical creatures be represented!

She has trained her entire life to go into The Wilds and have a chance at bonding with a creature that can give her unknown power. I devoured this book and left no crumbs 😩 literally read it in one day ✋ I’m not usually one for urban fantasy but this one was so cool! This story was so unique and I was completely invested 🤭 it was giving the hunger games vibes with the lottery and fourth wing with the animal bonding, but still remained its own book!
The world building was so well done without being too heavy! The magic system that powers their electricity/vehicles was so unique. I loved the idea of the military needing to go through a deadly bonding with an animal to be accepted. Super high-stakes and intriguing!
Aisling, our fmc, is the future empress of our setting and has spent her life training to protect herself and her people. She’s so badass and doesn’t take crap from one ✋ not me getting a little girl crush on her 😩 I love how much potential there is for her development!
And then we have our mmc, kohen 😭 I loved this man from the start (idk what that says about me ✋)!! He’s broody and deadly, but has a major soft spot for the people close to him. He was so cute and made me grin irl 🫶
We don’t see a ton of romance yet, but definitely have a good foundation to build on for future books 😌 I really loved the angst and banter!

This book has got some great reviews and a pretty high rating. My view - it’s ok, but not great. It’s readable and can pass the time if you have it to spare. In my view, it’s not good enough for me to bother getting the next in the series.
I’ll let you read the plot summary of the book itself. But FYI, it borrows from a lot of other novelists - which I don’t necessarily mind if it’s not too obvious or pervasive, but I did find myself regularly noting that a particular storyline or plot piece was from either Fourth Mind, Hunger Games, Divergent, Northern Lights or a few other books that I’ve read. There were even a few well known one-liners and scenes from films and tv series (even a partial scene from Twilight which just made me laugh). This was more like a patchwork of those books, rather than derivative of them or the genre.
The book also like it is written by a teenager with issues that they haven’t quite worked through. The writing felt like a YA novel.
There is also pervasive racial stereotypes especially in the beginning which felt unnecessary. It didn’t add to the story. In fact it distracted me from enjoying it.
Another factor not in its favour is that author tells us too much, as though we can’t work it out for ourselves. It is fairly constant and a bit annoying at times. I wanted to put it down and not pick it up again a few times because of this. I persevered though - mostly because of all the good reviews and the fact that I had paid for it. There were also loads of little errors ( eg, use of incorrect military terms, incorrect grammar). And weirdly, out of now where, and seeming out of place, she has the main character use the word “dude”. It just didn’t fit the character or the world. This novel could have done with some decent editing. Not sure who the editor is, but the author should either get a new one or tell the editor to do a better job.
Finally, the main female character is also inconsistent, as though the author can’t remember how she wrote her from one day to the next. For example, in one scene she would be so pissed off at the male possessive displays that she flung fries at the males in question and then stormed off. Then in another scene not long after she would say how she liked having the alpha male fight over her. There are a few examples like this.
Wishing it was a better read, but it was still ok.

I have several thoughts. The world and the magic system are interesting for sure, but seem familiar... oh yeah, because it's Fourth Wing with every kind of creature. If you enjoyed FW, you might love this book! Or you might be like me and can't help but see every little aspect that is the same.
The daughter of the emperor bonds with a powerful creature, the son of the enemy of her kingdom is bonded to the other creature of power that has a strong connection to hers. They get special powers from the creatures they're bonded to, and Aisling and Kohen have multiple that they have to keep a secret to stay alive... I'm all for this magic, and maybe it's a common trope, but it is SO FW / IF coded that I can't really look past it.
The next big thought I had was how Aisling, the FMC and daughter of the emperor, thought about the people of Imbria. The comments and descriptions of the people were not normal observations but very rude and some even derogatory comments about these other cultures and people. I know the author is probably setting this up for her to grow and learn more about the other culters in later books, but I feel like some comments were a little aggressive while trying to show her point of view she was raised on...
While it was a fun and intriguing book, and the ending makes it more compelling to want to finish, I don't really vibe with this series as a whole and want to know what she would do to divert it from Fourth Wing.

So this one had me hooked! It gave me fourth wing vibes, but yet different at the same time. I already have book 2 saved for when it comes out. The slow burn was burning, and I will always be a sucker for a good enemies to lovers. Captivating, and addictive!
This Fantasy Romance will capture you from chapter 1. This is book 1 of the new series The Ember War. The romance in this book is a slow burn, enemies to lovers. This book is not spicy. It does have adult language, innuendos, and intimate personal thoughts. The book moves at a quick pace following Ailing as she ventures into the wild to bond with a creature. The pressures of being the future empress remain present at all times. Even when her enemy starts to catch her attention. She has to survive the wilds, and head to a military boot camp for training. All while fighting off developing desires towards her enemy. Aisling is a strong female, who has been prepared for these upcoming tasks for as long time. Kohen has struggled to survive since losing his title, and his country when they fell into the current hands of the emperor. This book is high fantasy, with some current amenities. Even the current amenities have fantasy twists on them. This makes the world easier to imagine, and fun. A book so captivating, it wil leave you wanting more.

Goodness. I am at a loss for words. I was hooked from the first page. The book kind of goes through three parts… The Wilds (where all the characters meet and they must fight to bond with an animal), Bootcamp (where the bonded humans train for entrance into the Imperial Fleet), and then the last 5% is a battle. 𝙇𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝘽𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙙 is filled with a dragon and firebird rider, forbidden love, royalty, touch her and ☠, protective MMC, sworn enemies, ride or die besties.
I love it when fate intertwines with the most unlikely person. Meet the MMC, Kohen, former prince of Imbria, who is her father’s sworn enemy. So much happens during The Wilds and after. You must read this book! So good!
It is hard not to like all the characters. Aisling and Kohen are the MCs who are so captivating. But the side characters like Tetra (Aishling’s ride or die bestie with a smart mouth), Anika (bad@ss and loyal), and Alek (so hard not to root for him). I am so curious what is going to happen with all the characters in book two. I’m invested! I will 100% continue with this series.

Not many survive because you must be strong enough to fight the animal you want to bond with. Once the human is fond worthy to bond with the animal they can mind speak and share powers. So many unique powers and the variety of animals was fun. I enjoyed the banter between the FMC and her animal. So many LOL moments. Those who survive are recruited into the Imperial Fleet.
Goodness. I am at a loss for words. I was hooked from the first page. The book kind of goes through three parts… The Wilds (where all the characters meet and they must fight to bond with an animal), Bootcamp (where the bonded humans train for entrance into the Imperial Fleet), and then the last 5% is a battle. 𝙇𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝘽𝙡𝙚𝙚𝙙 is filled with a dragon and firebird rider, forbidden love, royalty, touch her and ☠, protective MMC, sworn enemies, ride or die besties.
I love it when fate intertwines with the most unlikely person. Meet the MMC, Kohen, former prince of Imbria, who is her father’s sworn enemy. So much happens during The Wilds and after. You must read this book! So good!
It is hard not to like all the characters. Aisling and Kohen are the MCs who are so captivating. But the side characters like Tetra (Aishling’s ride or die bestie with a smart mouth), Anika (bad@ss and loyal), and Alek (so hard not to root for him). I am so curious what is going to happen with all the characters in book two. I’m invested! I will 100% continue with this series.

Omg love love love! I got teary eyed in like chapter one and that was a sign to me I was probably going to enjoy this adventure. It’s giving hunger games but like with Romeo and Juliet and Blood & Steel, hope that makes sense to you all but it was just like the best of everything for me!

I have mixed feelings on this book- but overall it was an enjoyable read.
On one hand, the premise is interesting (a Fourth Wing style military college with bonded creatures meets a Hunger Games style lottery for survival), the characters are engaging, the art work is beautiful, its a sloooooooooow burn, and I was thoroughly invested in the plot & the budding romance.
On the other hand, I described this book to my friend today as the “young adult cliff notes version of Fourth Wing.”
There were so many parts throughout this book that felt like they were cut scenes from RY’s series but without the spice and with less world building. Combined with the fast pacing and more simplistic prose, I often found myself thinking this would be a great book to give to your 13 year old who really wants to read FW.
However, while I hate to leave negative reviews, there are parts that really knocked this book down a few stars.
1) the way the story is set up in the beginning feels a little real world xenophobic. I’m assuming this was unintentional as the lore you learn throughout the story shows the true nature of this relationship. But in the beginning when the Imbrians are clearly modeled after Indian people and called terrorists and the Amerseans are clearly western (and also posited as the “good guys”) it felt a little grimey. I’m not a POC so I don’t want to speak for anyone who identifies as such, but it definitely made me uncomfortable.
2) the last few chapters had a few typos that made it to print.

I loved this book. Seriously. I was so immersed in the world I finished it in a day. I can’t stop thinking about it either. One of my favorite ARCs I’ve read!
Aisling is the emperors daughter. She gets the chance to compete in the Wilds to bond with a powerful creature that will then give her powers. She is smart, sassy and very loyal.
Kohen is her sworn enemy, former prince of an opposing nation. He competes in the Wilds as well. When he starts protecting Aisling, you’re not sure who’s friend and who’s enemy. Kohen is 👌🏼🫠
I loved the whole concept of this book. To get powers you must bond with an animal. Your powers depend on the magical bond. So cool. I won’t spoil any surprises, you gotta read to find out!

I’ve seen a few people say that this book gives Fourth Wing, but in the beginning I’m getting Hunger Games vibes when it comes to Lottery day. I also haven’t read Fourth Wing yet so 🤷🏼♀️😂. Ashling, the poor girl from jump some things about her life just make me sad for her. 2 chapters into this book and I’ve already been left shook. Like “no way!” “What?” “Oh hell to the no!”. There was some good banter between the characters and there was a lot of action happening. The ending of this book…I did NOT see coming. Did I expect to cry? No. Did I expect to cry over a character I didn’t really like? No. But, here I am in tears. Ughhhh! The slow burn between Ashling and Kohen is killing me! Like come onnnnnnnn! You can cut the tension with a 🔪. This book literally just came out and I’m already chomping at the bit for the next installment!
