The Wrong Lady Meets Lord Right

Rate this book
When a young woman trades places with her noble cousin, their innocent ruse leads to true love in this new Regency-era romantic comedy of manners from the author of Mr. Malcolm’s List. When Arabella Grant’s wicked aunt dies suddenly, both Arabella and her cousin Lady Isabelle cannot help but feel relieved. She’d made their lives miserable, and now Lady Issie is free to read to her heart’s content, and Bella is free from taunts about her ignoble birth.  Their newfound freedom is threatened, however, when Issie’s great-aunt commands her to travel to London for a come-out Issie has never wanted. Issie, who is in poor health, is convinced she’ll drop dead like her mother did if she drops into a curtsy before the queen. So when her great-aunt turns out to be nearsighted and can’t tell the noble Lady Isabelle from her commoner cousin Arabella, Issie convinces Bella to take her place. Bella can attend all the exclusive entertainments that her lower birth would typically exclude her from, and Issie can stay in bed, her nose in a book. Bella agrees to the scheme for her dear cousin’s sake, but matters turn complicated when she meets the irresistible Lord Brooke. He begins courting her while under the impression she’s the rich and aristocratic Lady Isabelle, who, unlike Bella, is a suitable bride for an eligible young earl. And Bella, who is convinced that she has met “Lord Right,” worries what will happen when she reveals that he’s actually fallen for…the wrong lady.

This book had me rolling from the first sentence. The book was so well written I felt like I was there in the ballroom with the characters. Sooo good.
Issie and Bella are cousins and when Issie’s mother dies they stay to morn at Issie’s home. However a relative of Issie is insistent that she come and have her debut in London. Issie however doesn’t feel well about this, she is very anxious and she asks Bella to go do one outing as her. And from here the story rolls. Some of the situations that Bella finds her self in are so funny. For me the funniest point of the story happens in a ballroom with a button and I couldn’t stop laughing.
This book has it all romance friends ship laughter and found family. Loved this book!!!!
I am so happy I had already pre-ordered this book.

⭐⭐⭐⭐💫

Oh my word I loved this. Suzanne Allain's historical romances are the perfect comedies of manners! I love the creative and interesting historical details she seamlessly weaves in, the witty and sometimes tongue-in-cheek commentary on society, and the flawless banter and chemistry. And this one was no exception! Definitely a new favorite.

The relationships in this book were perfection, both romantic and familial. The tension and subsequent miscommunications about the swapped identities struck the perfect balance, allowing the characters to develop sincere relationships while also providing just the right amount of suspense - even providing some unexpected twists! The banter and comedic situations had me constantly laughing out loud, while the chemistry and romance - especially between Bella and Lord Brooke - had me absolutely swooning.

I appreciated the relationship between the cousins, how both women sincerely loved and fought for each other, while simultaneously learning to stand and fight for themselves. And Lord Brooke is one of my new favorite heroes. A consumate gentleman and man of character through and through, kind and considerate, witty and romantic, who cared neither for class nor the dictates of society and would settle for nothing less than love. And Dr. James was a delightful and unexpected addition - his lack of a stethoscope and subsequent results, and the author's note on how and why they were invented had me rolling!

I binged this in an afternoon. The perfect read for lovers of historical romance and romantic comedy alike!

This was such a delight to read! The perfect blend of wit, romance, and humor.

One of the strengths of this novel is Suzanne’s ability to create well-rounded, relatable characters. The way she describes the characters really brought them to life for me. I felt like I really got to know them, each with their unique personalities and backgrounds. It added a wonderful variety to the story, and I was rooting for their happily ever after!

The misunderstandings and mistaken identities added a layer of complexity to the plot, keeping me entertained and eagerly turning the pages. I was surprisingly pleased with the plot twists—things I did not expect at all.

This is a perfect pick for anyone looking for a lighthearted, romantic escape with a touch of humor. Readers are sure to leave with a smile on their faces and a warm feeling in their hearts.

I loved it!

4.25/ This is a fun and clean historical romcom, perfect for anyone who loves Jane Austen or Bronte sisters, while I did not love it, I did find it entertaining and the characters fun - Lord Brooke! - and the best friend Catherine was very annoying, to say the least. And flirty! You'll love the chemistry between Arabella and Brooke, which is always a must in any romance!
Bella is put in the place of her cousin to make the debut before the queen for the season. Sounds easy for Bella, until she meets Lord Brooke, a dashing irresistible man Bella cannot help but feel desire for. Brooke finds Bella lovely and sweet, and the chemistry is definitely there. Only problem? Bella isn't the woman she is supposed to be...
There is a lot of love and strong bonds between the women which is comforting to see and despite the many misunderstandings and twists, I adore how Arabella and Brooke work together and manage to have fun and enjoy being in love. This was my first book by the author, and I look forward to reading her other books.

Genre: romance, historical fiction
spice level: 1/5
angst level: 3/5
swoon level: 2/5
Tropes: false identity, the season, regency england, insta lust, strong female friendships/bonds.

I never want to start a Suzanne Allain book because I know I will read it too quickly, race to find out how it ends and then dreadfully miss the fun-loving characters’ and their Regency-era world.

*Spoilers*
Alas, here I am again, bereft as I must say goodbye to the misconceptions, misunderstandings and switched identities of Bella and Isse and their paramours, Lord Brooke and Dr Jordan. They took a winding road through strict protocol, class restrictions, birthright and parental manipulations to land in love. Allain expertly adds her trademark humor to situations that will seriously make you laugh out loud!

I’ve read every Allain book and welcome the opportunity to delve into the world she creates with her lively characters and rich storytelling about the elite of the Regency era- more balls! More flouncy dresses! More ‘rakes’ that turn into nice guys! More heartbreak that transforms to redemption!

We read to stimulate our imagination, eagerly stepping into a place we have never been, awaiting an adventure that inevitably unfolds. Allain’s books satisfy that construct but add so.much.more!

I recommend reading The Wrong Lady Meets Mr Right to fall in love with romance and happy endings!

This book was definitely pretty different from most popular regency romance novels.

There was not a smidge of impropriety, which was honestly a breath of fresh air. The main girl was a perfectly average debutante—with the usual interests and intellect expected of the time. She spends time with men in an extremely appropriate manner. Lord Brooke was also such a normal and respectable gentleman throughout.

The fun of this book came from the sister-switch shenanigans rather than the romance. The ending was delightful and deeply whimsical.

I freaking hated her best friend Catherine. Was hoping she was a villain. Too many characters in this book were deeply annoying like her. If I had lived back then, I would’ve poisoned them in their sleep.

I received a free copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group ; all opinions expressed are exclusively my own.

I read a good deal of historical fiction, particularly romances, and this was a lovely example of the genre. The main characters are fun as is the premise, and while the plot doesn't really throw too many surprises your way (one twist that is pretty well foreshadowed), in this case I think the book is better for it. Frankly, if you want a very slightly spicier Jane Austen (VERY SLIGHTLY) with less social satire, I think this book would fit the bill!

For sensitive readers, this book contains references to neglect, abusive parenting, and anxiety/panic disorders.

Have you wanted to read a clean historical romcom? This book may just hit the spot for you! It's a Regency Era story with humor galore but no spice. There are some swoony kisses though!

I enjoy a story of mistaken identity, and this one delivered! There were some unexpected twists that I really enjoyed. The writing was fast paced and a little different that many other authors that I have read recently. I would be interested in hearing this as an audiobook if/when it is released. I think the author wrote the way my sister talks!

Deepest thanks to Berkley and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book. I am happily leaving an honest review.

I was iffy going into this read, because you never know how mistake identity is going to go in a story. I was hooked right off the start from the first couple of paragraphs and the book never let me go from there. I honestly enjoyed the banter, the crazy situations, the true bond of female relatives, and the all over feelings in this book.

I feel that this will be a top comfort read that I will go back to, just because I am not ready to say goodbye to Issie, Bella, Dr. Jordan, or Lord Brooke just yet. This book is a wonderful fun, cozy, enjoyable novel that is perfect for a weekend, or rainy night read.

😂 I dearly love to laugh and Allain has a talent for comedy like few others. Combined with her knowledge of Regency period and the very clever plot, THE WRONG LADY MEETS LORD RIGHT was a 5 STAR read for me. My full review will follow in December.

Truly a story for booklovers, THE WRONG LADY MEETS LORD RIGHT is warm, witty, and oh so romantic. Suzanne Allain’s writing sparkles with humor, and the historical atmosphere is top notch. A perfect novel for fans of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer!

Oh! How I enjoyed this one! When two young cousins, Arabella and Isabelle, trade places, it makes for a fun, sweet romance for each. Newly orphaned Isabelle is titled, but an introverted bookworm at heart. When an elderly aunt forces her to come to London for a coming out season, she trades places with her lesser born cousin Arabella. What begins as a lark for Issie to avoid the anxiety of court presentation, turns into a season long ruse for both girls. Bella attracts the attention of Lord Brooke, who met Issie once before briefly, and he can't believe how the shy girl from five years ago has transformed into the sensation of season. Bella wonders how much longer she can deceive this handsome lord she's falling for.
I loved the sisterly dynamics between Issie and Bella. There were no hints of jealously or guile. The supporting characters provided comedic moments that made me laugh. There was a great surprise plot twist, that was just perfect. As with every good love story, there are a few angst filled bumps along the way. I absolutely enjoyed every page of this one! In a world gone crazy with racy Regency romances, there are few authors that echo the sensibilities of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. Refreshingly, Suzanne Allain carries on their footsteps, and for this reason, she is a must buy author for me.

I received a gifted copy of the book from the author and publisher in exchange for an honest review.

i've never read a book so fast! i love my historical romances, whether by Austen, the Brontës, or contemporary romance writers, but i rarely feel completely satisfied with the latter. this book was all charm and humor while still capturing all the complexities of the era including its glaring class and gender issues. the romance was exactly the brand i'm always chasing—full of longing, a question mark until the very end despite expecting (optimistically) a happily ever after. the story had all of the tension that you might expect from an identity swap storyline and the resulting lies arabella and isabelle must to tell to fool london society, but what i loved most was how fun it was while still feeling historically immersive and accurate!

thank you so much to netGalley, berkley, and the author for my advanced copy!
