Wow...this one was quite intense! Lots of man versus the nasty frozen environment in here...or should I say kids facing the frigid environment? And they only have their own knowledge to depend on too. No adult is going to come and give them the answers. Do you think you could do it? I certainly have doubts if I could. But this was a fantastic tale of survival and using your wits (plus making some serious mistakes too - as no one is perfect)...
So this is the fourth book I have read in this series now and I feel I am beginning to understand Jack better. I think his problem is trusting other people, especially other boys. He also feels a very strong urge to protect his younger sister too. And I suppose there can be good and bad parts about that. But it can be hard to trust strange people who are suddenly pushed into your family and that is especially true of Nicky in this book. Why? Because Nicky only gives cryptic answers and really won't share any information about himself... Can you really trust somebody in that situation?
This story is about the three kids getting caught in an avalanche and what happens. Its tense and I think it actually has some brilliance in it too. Like that bit about the spit and gravity! Brilliant! I never would have thought of that! It's probably a good thing to know if you are ever in such an area where an avalanche could happen...
The end did catch me by surprise. My guess was way off. But I do enjoy guessing.
One thing I don't understand is why the famous mountain has two names? I had no idea it did until I read it in this book. So Mount Mckinley is also called Denali by the locals? I wonder why...?Ah...the map at the front of the book explains it! It was renamed in 1980 when the park had been enlarged. Apparently Denali means "high one" in the language of the Athapascan people.

this book is about three kids that are abandoned in alaska denial national park and by them walking there they heard a roar from some where and when they got to the place were they heard the roar they saw that there were avalanches.the avalanches were buried alive and the kids did not know what to do to help them out because there was a lot of snow and with the kids freezing then how would they be able to do something to help the avalanches out. the kids father left them in alaska but at the end of the story he came back for and they also got the avalanches out. but almost at the very end of the story the kids were suffering because they could not sleep well and jack had a very bad headache that he even wanted to throw up.i think that at the end of the story they were all happy that their fsther came back for them because they really suffered

This formula mystery is part of a series set in various National Parks. Buried Alive takes place in Alaska's Denali National Park and Preserve where the Landon siblings grapple with a foster boy's mysterious past that leaves them stranded in the aftermath of an avalanche. The targeted audience is the intermediate grades. Scouts working on survival skills might enjoy this book.

A good little mystery, festooned with facts about Denali National Park and the elusive wolverine. Written by a mother/daughter team, the mother a scientist, the daughter a child fiction writer. Eleven others books in the series, each about a different national park, and published by National Geographic Society.

Woke up at 4:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning and continued reading. Finished at 5:50 a.m. Out of all 13 of these National Park Mysteries for youngers, this was probably THEEE most gripping and "mysterious." Why? Well, the mob was involved for one. Witness protection program...and obviously an avalanche. Here's hoping my fifth graders will love these books!
