HIS SECRET
A Lord takes what he wants.
But like anything else, even he can get greedy and betray his oath.
That’s where Carnage comes in. A Spade brother runs their prison for those who have wronged their society.
It just so happens to be where the Lords have sent me.

I VOW. YOU VOW. WE VOW.
Most women within the Lords don’t get the chance to prove themselves worthy of the brand or the power that comes with it, but there’s always an exception.
I’m one of them.
Finally, my time had come to be assigned to a Lord.
Not just any Lord but a Spade brother—Haidyn Jamison Reeves.
I had everything under control until he found out what I was hiding. Everyone in our world knows the only way to get to the top is to sacrifice something the Lords want.

So when Haidyn gave me a choice—become his toy or turn me over to the Lords—the decision was easy.
I’ve worked too hard to get this far to allow a man to take what I’ve earned. I chose to become his dirty little secret over admitting I failed.

It didn’t take long for him to unravel my web of lies, thread by thread, until nothing was left. He took over my life, blurring the lines until I discovered that what I thought I wanted was no longer what I needed.
But even in our world, nothing lasts forever. Time had run out. The hourglass lay broken on the floor, shattering not only my future but everything I knew.

I never thought that falling in love with a Spade brother
would reveal so many secrets. And when they all came to light,
the Lord who blackmailed me was the only one I could count on.

This touches on very dark themes. The 𝗧𝗪𝘀 will be posted inside the book before the prologue and on Shantel's website.

If you have not read the L.O.R.D.S. series yet, do NOT start with 𝑴𝒂𝒅𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔. It contains spoilers from previous books in the series.

DNF@68% because what the fuck was this book??? plot twists were so weak but filled?? and so much filler content and excessive smut and 800+ pages for this?? This is definitely the worst book in the series.

The fact that this book is over 800 pages is madness.

This review is chaotic just like the book but bear with my thoughts lmao: My Notes & Highlights

3.5 stars, full Review on my blog!

This was... wow. Although I'm unsure how I feel about it, I did like it better than Carnage. I want to give it a higher rating based on how I feel about it but logically, there were so many elements that felt unnecessary as with the last 40% jammed packed with new information.

I’m so horny it’s fucking pathetic. I’m someone who needs human interaction. I’m affectionate. I need to be hugged and kissed..

Wow, I'm surprised that some things were finally explained, except the whole Benny situation?? He's barely mentioned?? like cooool we get to know about Benny's cousin Hudson, wow nice! but Benny not so much. At least we get to know they failed their initiations. I KNOW RIGHT CRAZY they were almost LORDs. I still feel like we weren't given all the answers to the plot holes from Carnage, and Shantel left us with even more questions.

Hoping we get an Adam book because wtf?? He's keeping so many secrets and I have so many questions. He's with the FBI? CIA?? Actually wtf??

Madness is about 400 pages too long. There were way too many unnecessary sex scenes and filler, like cool she's going out with the girls from her double life but such a waste of 10 pages. Cool they're fucking for the 200th time NICE!! I feel like the entire first 65% of the book was mostly smut with little substance, which I did skim through a bit, and then the last 40% CRAMMED with plot twist after plot twist, and some SHOCKING information. But it all felt a little rushed.

Her pregnancy was predictable, like ok why else would she be vomiting on and off for months LOL?? predicted this around 66%, idk it wasn't hard to tell with her vomiting like 80 times in 600 pages.

Annabelle—the supposed big boss going through her initiation—acts like a lost little lamb at every turn yet is also completely clueless. I didn't like Annabell/Charlotte much. She's branded with the LORDs crest and craves 'power' yet she folded so easily, that she was practically panting like a dog in heat for Haidyn. She was so easy to manipulate. Her mother did such a good job.

He laughs, pushing it in. My body trembles as he steps back, shoving his sweatpants down his hips, and his hard cock springs free. I did that. Not some video of him fucking someone else. Not another bitch moaning his name. Me. His doll face.

Did I like their 'romance'? No, not at first, I didn't think they had chemistry but they grew on me as a couple, I liked how they were so protective of each other.

Can we talk about the GIANT gaps where significant events happen off-page? I feel like there were so many background events that didn't make it to the book. 😭

→The rinse-and-repeat plotline was driving me mad

Shantel, girl, you have way too many twists crammed in. Very shocking twists but holy fuck it was way too much for my poor heart to handle.

Unbelievable things:
→Her stepfather reversing her birth control dose?? is that even possible??
→Drugs to make you live longer??
→the fact that Haidyn has 'truth serum' like he's Snape from Harry Potter with his Veritaserum lmfao

We get some information on the Founders? I wish it was explained better? Will there be a series on them?

“Isabella also informed me that women started the Lords, and if those founders were given the drug...” They look from one another and then back to me, so I continue. “Then they had children…and their children…” They get the picture.

ALOS, Can we talk about his petname for her? 'Doll face' ickkkkk, and the fact that he calls her that over 200 times in the book.

update Sept 5th → I just remembered that I wanted to say HOW have these characters not had heart attacks from all the adrenaline/drugs they take??

Anywaysssssss, Shantel, when is Kashton's book coming out I NEED ANSWERS.

I was hype for my man Hayden bc I liked him so much in Carnage, but this was a letdow & ugh Shantel lookin’ ass didn’t even give a flying fuck bc she made the heroine sound like a strong baddie. But it was all CAP 🧢 b!tch was panting like a dog in heat & 800 pages I heard saw read was “please” moaning “hay-den” “whore” throughout this book. I need my hours back shjt bc this book wasn’t worth losing ur sleep over. I took one for the team yall. 🫠

Where tf was the fake session at? There was no depth in this book yall… I’m talking about emotional connection you know? Barley any scenes of them two even talking/interacting, but doing the nasty only. There was NO connections/chemistry whatsoever. Heroine is a disgrace bc she didn’t even put up a fight/resistant… what happened to you wanting to be top dwag (pussy power) in the society?! 💀 Even her own manipulative lookin’ ass motha is badder b!tch than her. Yeah, I said it.

Look, Charlotte/Annabelle lost her ambition once she saw & met Hayden. All my dude had to say was “Want me to tell you all my secrets?” I give her a threatening smile and go on. “The only way I’m going to talk to you is if you’re naked and on your knees with a gag in your mouth.” It’s a wrap. 🎬

”Want me to tell you all my secrets? The only way I’m going to talk to you is if you’re naked and on your knees with a gag in your mouth.”

I am disappointed. That is the main thought I have.

I have read all the previous L.O.R.D.S. books and most of other books by Shantel Tessier as well. Reading Madness, I could not help but think that this was a watered down version of the other books, especially the L.O.R.D.S. books and, in my opinion, an all time low from her.

Firstly, this book was way too long. The first 65-70 % were mostly filler pages and could have been cut half without missing anything from the reading experience. There were a lot of unnecessary scenes and repetitive scenes that honestly became boring to read.

Secondly, I know most people have read all the L.O.R.D.S. books before reading Madness (as have I) but with how many books I generally read, forgive me for not being able to remember all the plot details from the previous books. A lot of events in the previous books were offhandedly mentioned in this one and even I, who has read all those books, did not get all those references. A little more backstory should have been explained in these situations instead of just expecting the reader to know. Especially considering how unnecessarily long the book was, I think the pages could have been used better. Bewarned, if you have not read the perevious books, Madness will be confusing even though technically the whole series can be read as standalones.

Thirdly, what the hell was wrong with the spice? I am used to Stantel's books being spice-packed and the spice being creative and addictive. Now, I feel like a lot of spicy scenes were just skipped in favor of filler pages. Some of the spice was really good but, especially comparing to e.g. The Ritual, it was lacking. A LOT.

I expected so much from the characters, especially after Saint and Ashtyn. Instead, I feel like I also got watered down versions of L.O.R.D.S. MCs. Considering how ruthless the Spade brothers are supposed to be, I feel like Haidyn was more lame than most Lords in general. No Lord I know would willingly offer themselves to be tortured and imprisoned to save a woman, instead they would come up with a plan of action and obliterate the threat.

In general, Charlotte was too naive and juvenile to have grown up in the world she did and be able to go through the initiation. I was expecting some Lana Myers level badass FMC and got an airhead barbie doll instead (fitting seeing how Haidyn called her doll face lol). She was way too naive and out of the loop regarding everything considering what her stature was supposed to be and what she was involved in. Especially seeing as how easily manipulated she was by Hudson and Isabella.

The last 30% of the book was jam-packed with plot twists and new information which got too overwhelming too fast. Also, Haidyn's rescue ended up being way too easy. There were still a lot of unanswered questions left up in the air (like who was the other guy with Hudson at Charlotte's and what is Bill's role in everything) and I feel like a lot of events, especially at the end of Madness, were foreshadowing for Adam's book.

Don't get me wrong, there were good things about this book as well but seeing as how I am mainly feeling disappointed after finishing Madness, I decided to go with my gut with this review and, instead of writing the kind of review I usually write, to just ramble on and see what comes of it. I will definitely be reading Kashton's book as well (I think with all his absences the timeline of Kashton and Haidyn's books will overlap a bit) and I hope that Madness was just a glitch in the system and Kashton's book will return to the level where I feel the L.O.R.D.S. books should be at.

”That’s a good wife. Letting me use you like the whore you are for me.”

So... I finished. Wait NO, this book finished me! Shantel!!!!! This book was worth the months of edging! I’m gonna need 5-10 business days to process my thoughts and emotions. My love for Shantel and the LORDS series knows no bounds. In fact it has turned into an unhealthy obsession at this point. So it should be no surprise the my love for Madness is also unhealthy.

Now we all know that Shantel has edged us with this book for MONTHS! And when I tell you the wait was worth it, it was worth it. This book was everything I wanted and more! I love everything about Haidyn and his story. I blushed, giggled, kicked my feet with joy, and I sobbed so uncontrollably. In true Shantel fashion, you will be on a rollercoaster til the very end.

I will say this one thing, if you think you know the LORDS world, you don't. This book brings a whole new perspective that will make you say WTF. And it makes me so excited to see what Shantel delivers with the next book.

So let me leave you with this... Haidyn and his FMC are waiting for you! This book will absolutely destroy you. This one will alter your brain chemistry in the best possible way. And when you finish Madness, you will question what to do next.

Idk what it is about these books but it’s like a fever dream every time & idk how I devour them so fast 😮‍💨

Shantel never misses with the L.O.R.D.S. series. Haidyn had me sweating, crying, giggling & kicking my feet, and pacing my living room at 1 am.

My oh my. Haidyn captured my heart. I took my time reading Madness, wanting to fully absorb and enjoy every moment. Yet, I found myself so captivated by the story that I stayed up until 6 am for two nights, utterly hooked on (the) Madness. Shantel has once again delivered a story that exceeds my expectations in a dark romance. I may even have a slight preference for this book over Carnage, although I will always love each book/character for their own story. The plot for Madness is so good! I was blown away by how masterfully all the threads came together.
To fully appreciate the complexity of the story, I highly recommend a reread of the previous books before diving into Madness; The story is intricately woven, much like a puzzle, and some key details might be easy to forget. But rest assured, things become more clear as everything unfolds. The Lords Series is a true test of my sanity and moral compass, pushing me to confront the gray areas I'm willing to explore. I'm drawn to Shantel's writing like a potent drug, craving the thrill of it all… & oxytocin it releases. I'm excited for everyone to read Haidyn’s story. The Lords series will always hold a special place in my heart as it introduced me to my favorite brand of dark romance. While I'm now officially and eagerly anticipating a certain character's story/book (IYKYK) , Madness has definitely earned a special place in my heart, becoming an absolute favorite. 🖤🖤

4.5/5⭐️ loved our gentle lord!!!! ok so he’s not gentle but he is way more cinnamon roll than our other lords and I loved it 😍 docked .5 stars because it is IMPOSSIBLE to remember the details from previous books and I need Shantel to add a *bit* more context when referencing those moments. Otherwise ON POINT!!! spice, plot, characters, EVERYTHING!

Haidyn officially took the top spot from Tyson 😮‍💨
------------------------------------------>>>
Okay I let it process for a week. I think Haidyn and Tyson are tied for the number 1 spot. 🏆

When the dedication starts you off with...
“Drop your feminism at the door. Haidyn Reeves is going to make you his good little dirty wh__ in every way.”

...then you know you are in for a good time.

When he says things like this:

Shantel really has a way with words 😂

But Haidyn also says:

Madness picks up pretty much after the end of Carnage [IF YOU HAVE NOT READ CARNAGE, 🛑✋STOP RIGHT NOW AND READ IT FIRST] and due to the ending of Carnage he chooses to live elsewhere for the time being teaming up with a character from the previous books in the series to try and find out more about what happened to Ashtyn. He finds himself in close proximity to the FMC and when he finds out that she has been playing him he gives her an ultimatum 🤭 Guess what? She chooses him 🔥

This book builds on the plot started in Carnage and goes as far back as The Ritual, serving up twists and turns throughout.

Pick this book up if you like:
* Secret Identity
* Secret Society
* Forced Proximity & Marriage
* A list of TWs that reads like a shopping list.

I laughed and cried and the spice was spicing throughout 🥵 yes it is 800 pages long. But is it worth it? Yeah I think so. I enjoy Shantel's writing style and like with anything this won't be for everyone. Would I recommend it to a friend? Yessssss. I need the next book now please.

I VOW. YOU VOW. WE VOW. 🫡

Thank you to Shantel Tessier and Candi Kane PR for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 🌟

the lords series continues its journey into the spade brothers and carnage with haidyns story, picking up where saint’s story left off. more is uncovered about the origins of the lords, what happened during the spade brothers “training” and more.

listen, i love haidyns character and the character development that happened throughout the book but holy hell i do not think that i could handle him. i will gladly enjoy him from afar and continue professing my love for tysons character.

my big “complaint” about this book is that was way longer then was probably necessary? it honestly could have been 500 - 600 pages and accomplished the literal exact same thing. it brought my rating down significantly because i did find myself asking when the plot was going to start moving forward. 😭 the only other thing that bothered me was that it felt like that “magic” that were in the other books, especially the first three (the ritual, the sinner and the sacrifice) was lacking this time around.

i honestly wish that i had more to say but this book wasn’t exactly what i thought it was going to be.

Major Let Down

I have really been looking forward to this book for a long time, and I know anyone who read the rest of the Lords Series will also read this book, but don’t set your expectations too high. I was shocked at how little the plot developed in the first 50% of the book. This book is almost 800 pages, but everything that happened could have definitely been condensed down to 400 pages at the most. I almost DNF’d the book at 60% because almost nothing had happened. I had to force myself to finish the book. In Carnage, Haidyn is painted as a mysterious, sexy, adventurous guy, but in Madness he was almost a letdown. The spicy scenes were pretty boring, with a few extra spicy moments. He was a total A-hole to his brothers for no reason, and once we reached the climax of the book almost 75% of the way in, it was all resolved within 3 chapters. This book severely lacked any excitement or major plot development besides the last 4 chapters. It drags on so long and was almost painful for the first 50%. You do get to see the characters from all the other books, but that is really all this book has going for it. We also don’t ever get to know what happened to Muffins.

Finishing *MADNESS* left me with mixed feelings. In my opinion, this isn’t Shantel Tessier's strongest work overall. I found the first half of the book to be a struggle. There were numerous references to *Carnage*, and since I read that back when it was released in Fall 2023, it’s been a while. To fully appreciate *MADNESS*, I think it’s best to read it immediately or shortly after finishing *Carnage*. Much of the first half felt like filler, with only snippets of the main storyline emerging. It wasn’t until around the 60% mark that the book started to really grab me. From that point on, it felt like the Shantel Tessier I know—full of spice and plot twists. Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely spice in the first half, but the story itself moved slowly. Once I got into it, I was completely drawn back into the world of the Lords, and I loved it. Haidyn, the male lead, is truly something special; his heart is enormous. However, despite some strong moments, I can’t say I’m overly excited about *MADNESS* as a whole when compared to all the other books in the Lords series. The first Epilogue does, however, tease you of what all is to come. And woah!!! Ok, let’s do this Shantel.

The first few FMC chapters made me think “yes, this is going to be the one that stands up to the LORDS and tries to change the way things work” but as SOON as he said jump, she begged “how high?”

For me, it was way too long for what it was. I know, shantel loves to write about kinks and spice, but can we also get some plot within the every other page 🍑 kink?

Feeling Cute, Might DNF.. might not. Probably will.

OK. Wow. Where do I start? I cannot handle ST’s chaotic writing style, and I refuse to give a sycophantic 5⭐️ review because it’s trendy. First of all - Haidyn? A feminine spelled name for your big badass boy? Thumbs down. Annabelle - the big boss going through her initiation acts at every turn like a lost little lamb doesn’t know what to do. Thumbs down. Huge gaps of missing time where significant stuff happens OFF PAGE. Girl bye. Haidyn hates Ashtyn? Or doesnt? Doesn’t want her? Or shares her with Saint and Kash? Hates her? Or is going to take her out to dinner so she knows she has a friend? And then we flip the page and Haidyns been shot, Ashtyn’s been kidnapped and we. saw. none. of. it. Then - here’s a fun one - Haidyns been talking about Adam for a while, Haidyn goes on the run with Adam to Vegas because of Ashtyn and now Saint and Kash are mad at him and want him to go.. and while at this meeting with Graves Haidyn is giving us background on Adam. Like now? He’s the least player in the room. Shantel. Baby. Did you have a bill due? Have you ostracized everyone in your life who might’ve said this book reads like you phoned it in? This was chaos at best, an excuse to rewrite the same smut scenes again at worst. Snooze fest.

I love Shantel, but this book was 400 pages too long. I felt like this with Carnage also. It was too long and things were added that just weren’t necessary. I think the plot is good with this new carnage series but…and I never thought I’d say this…but the spice is overkill. I know. I know. Shantel is the queen of spice and kink. HOWEVER, I just felt like the plot was a back burner until the last 15 chapters and then she just stuffed so much information into those chapters I was left reeling. Not to mention so much was brought back from from previous books, I felt like I didn’t really understand because it’s been so long between them. Overall, I think I’ll hang on to see what happens because THAT ENDING…Jesus.

no way this was a final draft

-too much smut
-too many plot twists
-the mc's barely had chemistry
-Annabelle/Charlotte was insufferable (also her double life was dumb af)
-Haidyn wasn't as 'bad ass' as I thought he was
-her mom is crazy wtf

You’re telling me, in 800 pages this man only went down on her ONE TIME?????? Ummmmm. I have phantom pains in my body after reading what Haidyn put this girl through. Story line was a touch confusing?

Also, they hardly ever spoke to each other? All they did was fuck? The overuse of “doll face” and her begging “please” were almost my 13th reason. Where was the depth? The chemistry? I finished the book but was still looking.

***Spoilers*****

I loved this series but this book made me want to throw my kindle and DNF it. While I love smut I found myself scrolling past it. Literally kept saying “oh look they’re at it again.”

The first 60% of the book had me questioning what the hell was going on and not in a good way. More like when you read book 2 of a series before you read book one and you’re missing a huge plot line.

The last 40% had the actual storyline and not just smut scenes. It felt rushed and still had me going “what is going on?!!!!”

Even my husband could see I was frustrated with this book and left me alone so I could figure it out. Definitely not her best work and not my favorite. Maybe I’ll reread it in a few months when I stop hating it.
