Sedona seems like the perfect place to live, except for all those murders in the Survivor's Book Club Mysteries written by Lynn Cahoon. A cancer survivor opens a book store, but she is also an amateur sleuth solving murders when her friends and colleagues are accused of the ultimate crime. This time, it's her boyfriend, Archer, whom she must defend. A former friend, possible frenemy, turns up dead after meeting years later. But there were some connections that make him look guilty, so the police aren't willing to leave it alone so easily. I enjoyed this one, but it did feel like the ending was a bit abrupt in terms of identifying the killer. I enjoyed getting to know all the new characters. And I really do relax when I read stories like this one - makes me a happy reader!

Reading Between the Lies, the newest installment of the Survivors' Book Club Mystery series, set in Sedona, Arizona, is another opportunity for Rarity Cole, and her Tuesday night book club crew to solve a murder. This time the accused is her boyfriend Archer, and the victim is an old friend of his who has just moved to town to open a new art gallery and development. There is a suspect list to investigate, and different members run around the area to find answers. I enjoy this series with likable characters in an interesting location and always a great murder to solve.

Although I had heard of Lynn Cahoon, I had not read any of her books until this one. Let me say I will certainly be reading more, as I had fun reading this one. This is the fourth in the Survivor's Book Club Mystery series.

My Thoughts:
Even though this is not the first of the series, it was easy to read it as a stand alone. I liked Rarity's devotion to making her bookstore a success. She was doing all the things to make the bookstore part of the community and I think that's what everyone wants in a bookstore. I enjoyed following the investigation and how Rarity and the Book Club Members helped. It was an interesting case. Anyone who likes cozy mysteries will enjoy the book.

Rarity Cole is the owner of The Next Chapter, a bookstore that offers more than the newest book to read, it offers support, friendship and a place to to relax, when life has you down.
Rarity and her book club friends are also very good at solving murders, and the death of an business owner/ artist has them asking questions and trying to put the clues together.
I like the background issues of the characters as well, they all encounter similar issues that we all have, and to me, that makes these books seem more personal and less fictional.

Our latest adventure has Rarity and Archer checking out a new art gallery recently built and opened in Red Rock. The gallery owner and manager is an old classmate of Archer's. The gallery and a new housing development built for the employees are supposed to be centered near vortexes that add to the appeal. When the day after the Grand Opening, Archer finds the body of his former classmate, in the center of the vortex, with an arrow in his back, he becomes a suspect. You know that Rarity and her investigative book club are going to be on the job. Besides tracking down a murderer, Rarity finds multiple people in her inner circle in relationship transitions, and she and Archer may be among them. Lots going on in this one. I love the premise of this series which finds Rarity Cole running a bookstore in Sedona, Arizona after moving from St. Louis, Missouri. Rarity is now cancer-free and is happy for a fresh start. She leads a book club for other cancer survivors and has developed a knack for solving crimes. This time her boyfriend, Archer, is the suspect and she's even more determined to find the true killer. Rarity has some good friends and it's fun seeing them work together to investigate the death of one of Archer's clients who is also an old acquaintance of his.
This book wasn't my favorite in the series, but still has some interesting moments. Part of the issue is I'm not completely behind the idea of Rarity and Archer as a couple and their relationship plays a large role in this book. A development at the end of the book surprised me. This book (and series) does a good job of showing the overall vibe, if not the details, of Sedona. Although something was missing in this book for me, I'm sure other fans of the series will enjoy it.

Rarity Cole is an amazing main character. She is witty, kind, caring, supportive, intelligent, curious and so much more including a cancer survivor. This cozy mystery series brings you wonderfully written mysteries while instilling hope and support of living your best life regardless what it throws at you as long as you survive. I love that Rarity got a second chance at life after her cancer diagnosis, moved to Sedona to be near her friend and opened a bookstore. The Survivors book club starts out as a supportive and fun reading club that turns into a sleuthing club. If you haven't started this series, you absolutely need to do so right away as you are missing out on extremely relatable characters with real world flaws that make them even more relatable along with well=crafted mysteries and relationships and hours of entertainment. I think this book was the best so far as there were great twists, turns and "red fish" (read the book to figure out why I miffed that saying up)! I absolutely can't wait for more Rarity and her crew! I'm hoping we'll get another book soon!

I'm really enjoying this new series and looking forward to more character development with how this one ended. Cahoon is one of my favorite cozy mystery authors at this time! The novels are always unique and not at all formulaic like some authors fall victim to.
Rarity and her Survivor's book club have a knack for finding information when a body is found. This time, she didn't find the body so that was nice. I enjoy how they all look out for one another throughout the book and the series. And while Rarity's ex is mentioned somewhat in this book, it hasn't been mentioned a lot in the series other than some back ground info and Rarity's thought process for moving forward in her current relationship.

“'Reading Between the Lies” by Lynn Cahoon book 4 in the Survivors Book Club Mystery series. I love this series, it’s entertaining full of loveable characters and a furbaby named Killer. Bookshop owner Rarity Cole is living her best life after surviving cancer—hosting book clubs, classes, and parties at her store, The Next Chapter, and giving back to her community in Sedona, Arizona. But an awkward outing to an art gallery is about to add a dark slant to the picture . . .
Once again the story was engaging, well-written, and I love the setting in the desert town of Sedona Arizona. I love hearing about all the spiritual pursuits in the area, I’m on the fence about lots of them much like Rarity but have friends who swear by a lots of them. This time it centres around energy vortexes or fake ones …
Rarity is someone I would love to be friends with or work at her bookstore, and the friends she made were people I would like to hang out with especially Sam, Shirley, Archer and Drew. I found myself thoroughly enjoying the story and I found the 3 romance/life situations making me care even more for the characters as these are things that happen to a lot of us. My mother in law has dementia and I see first hand what it can do to their spouse and the loneliness it can cause. While the ending felt a bit rushed in revealing the killer's identity, I devoured this book and can't wait for the next instalment!
I highly recommend this cozy mystery series to all my friends who love a cozy with a strong support system of friends in it.

Another great book in this series!! I love getting to spend time with Rarity and her friends, although this time, there is not quite the same amount of coziness as usual. My only problem with this is that I read it soon after publication, and now I just have to wait patiently for the next one!!

My thoughts:
Aside from the murder, relationship woes seem to be the main focus of this book. Shirley's tentative new relationship doesn't stand much of a chance despite how they may feel about each other. Sam and Drew are still at odds after he suspected Sam's brother in a previous homicide. Then there is Rarity and Archer. They seem like an ideal match but lately Archer has been neglecting (or is that avoiding?) telling her about certain things. He hadn't told her much about his college life and some things that happened back then. He does care about Rarity but also seems clueless that his former employee has been crushing on him despite him being with Rarity. I doubt most women could be as calm as Rarity has been with all of this.
I do like Drew's dad Jonathon. As an ex cop and Drew's dad, he can be a bit overprotective of Rarity and other females around the bookstore but he also has a good heart and has been a great source for gathering info for investigations.
The murder was a bit bizarre in how the victim was killed and positioning of the body to be found. Archer was a suspect but getting him off the hook wasn't easy. There weren't a lot of other viable suspects. The whole setup for the gallery and the Red Rock community was strange. Figuring out the connections and who had the strongest motive was frustrating for not only the cops but also Rarity and the book club.
There were a couple of somewhat dramatic encounters for Rarity before the rather anti climactic reveal and follow up. I wasn't surprised at who the killer was though there were a few interesting turns and connections revealed before the end.
Overall, a quick cozy read.

Rarity Cole is a cancer survivor and new bookstore owner located in Sedona, Arizona. She is happily dating Archer Ender, a hiking tour operator. After the messiness of Sam’s brothers case, the gang is enjoying the quiet peace.
For date night Archer takes Rarity to the pre-opening of Moments, an art gallery. The owner Jackson Sanders, is a former schoolmate and upcoming client of Archer’s. Rarity doesn’t think much of meeting Jackson initially. His manner is a bit too much. Upon learning that Rarity is sponsoring a back to school drive, Jackson donates $500 in cash. Afterward, she becomes intrigued by a pre-Civil War painting, information on the painting is nonexistent, except that it was from a Georgia estate sale. While studying the painting she meets Eleanor, Jackson’s second in command. Later that evening upon leaving the restroom, Rarity hears someone threatening Jackson in his office.
Returning to Archer so that they can leave she finds Calliope attempting to kiss him! Calliope is Archer's former assistant who’s been in love with him for years. Turns out she not only recently had lunch with him but she’s also been spending the night at his house. This of course causes problems in their relationship. Archer doesn’t understand why his behavior upsets Rarity so much and he always has one excuse after another for his behavior.
A few nights later the whole gang gets together to attend the official grand opening. Everyone has a lovely time. The following morning Archer shows up to take Jackson on an early morning hike… only to find him dead!
Now with Archer a murder suspect, Rarity and the book club are on the hunt for a killer!
I enjoyed it very much I was totally engrossed from beginning to end. I don’t know what happened but one minute I was reading along and the next minute it was the end and I wondered… how? I just feel like I missed something. Kinda like when you drop a stitch and you don’t notice it’s happened, the end of the book feels incomplete somehow. 4****

Review:
The characters are well rounded and well developed. Rarity’s Bookstore is doing good and so is her relationship with her boyfriend. But when an art gallery owner is found murdered, things start going south. Archer, Rarity’s boyfriend, is considered to be a person of interest. Rarity and her crime solving book club will have to solve the case, because Rarity knows Archer is innocent.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery is well plotted and there were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted cozy mystery. I really like this book and I think you will too.

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Rarity’s Bookstore is doing good and so is her relationship with her boyfriend. But when an art gallery owner is found murdered, things start going south. Archer, Rarity’s boyfriend, is considered to be a person of interest. Rarity and her crime solving book club will have to solve the case, because Rarity knows Archer is innocent.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The mystery is well plotted and there were enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted cozy mystery. I really like this book and I think you will too.

There’s a lot to enjoy in this cozy crime series - the bookshop setting, the book club that at this point is getting a reputation for solving local murders and the bonds of friendship between the women of the bookclub who were bought together initially by their shared experience as cancer survivors.
And some of it may be the conventions of the cozy crime genre but the paternalistic tendencies of Jonathan, Archer & Drew did grate on me… let the woman walk home from work! It’s a little heavy handed at times - it steps across the line of good natured concern.
Rarity and Archer’s relationship progression also seemed to have gone backwards - I’m sure in the last book, Rarity had been thinking of their shared future - but in this one she barely seemed convinced that it was a serious relationship - and to be fair, Archer did do some things that perhaps warranted that hesitation (I did like that Drew called out his friend for these behaviours - it’s very important that friends do this, even if it’s uncomfortable).
There was also a couple of instances where fragile masculinity comes into play - with Archer questioning his manhood because he likes apple cinnamon tea? And another where Rarity tries to dissuade him from carrying her tote bag because it’s sparkly and has a princess crown on it… I found it jarring.
I had hoped for the art restoration storyline to lead somewhere - I wanted to know more about the civil war era painting.
I did actually quite enjoy reading this tho (even though I have complaints) - it was perfect for a rainy Sunday - so my library hold came in at the perfect time.

This is the 4th book in the Survivors' Book Club series and I swear that they are getting better and better.
Rarity and her boyfriend, Archer attends an Art Gallery and later the owner is found murdered. Unfortunately, Archer is the one who finds the body and ends up being the main suspect. So of course it is up to the book club to find the real murderer. But it isn't going to be quick or easy which is great for us readers since we get a great mystery out of it.
One of the things I enjoy about this book is that it isn't just about solving a murder, but we also get to know the characters better and be involved in their lives for a little while. A. At least the book club members are. Shirley is back and is still dealing with what is going on with her husband, George. At the same time, she is developing a friendship with Rarity's neighbor, Terrance. I have mixed feelings but she does deserve to be happy. Sam and Drew are going through a very rough patch in their relationship. Not liking that at all.
As for the murder, I kind of figured out who it was early on but I still enjoyed going through the case with the book club. It is always fun when I can't guess who it is but also fun when I can say "yes, I knew it!"
The ending!!!

This is the 4th installment in the Survivor’s book club mystery series. Rarity is established in the community of Sedona and is glad to have a good set of friends and employees to work with. When Shirley both her friend and employee asks if she and her friend Sam along with their boyfriends attend an Art gallery opening with her. The issue is Shirley’s husband is in a memory care facility and Terrence who is Rarity’s neighbor has asked Shirley to attend. Shirley does not want anyone to get the wrong idea as she is married. The owner of the gallery Jackson Sanders turns out to be a former classmate of Archer’s (Rarity’s boyfriend) and the evening goes off without a hitch and Jackson even donates $500 to Rarity’s back to school backpack drive at the bookstore and invites them all back for the official opening later that week. The morning after the opening, Archer finds Jackson dead in the “vortex” with an arrow in his back. Due to their past history which was not good, Archer is the prime suspect. The Tuesday night sleuthing club is back in action trying to prove Archer’s innocence. Such a great cast of supporting characters including Drew’s father and former police Jonathan, Shirley, Terrence, Sam, and the rest of that group. Rarity has really developed a good of friends around her and the story kept me entertained from the beginning. Looking forward to the next installment. Highly recommend.

She has created a special family for herself in Sedona. She has good friends she can count on, her boyfriend Archer Ender and her Yorkie Killer. When Jackson Sanders the new gallery owner is found dead at a stone vortex it actives the Tuesday Night Sleuthing Club. The members gather to share clues and try to solve the case before Drew the local cop does. Archer went to school with Jackson and is immediately a suspect. There is someone breaking into businesses where there are lone owners and attacking them. This has Drew's father Jonathan who is visiting - spend a lot of time writing his novel in Rarity's store while keeping an eye on her.
This story had fun moments and some tense drama, which will have the reader keep turning the pages to find out what will happen next. It is also an uplifting series about survival and the blessing of good friends. As the story had an open ending, hopefully that means that there will be another book in the series soon.

Reading Between the Lies is #4 in the Survivor's Book Club Mysteries. Rarity owns a bookshop so we are frequently there seeing the day to day life of a bookseller and her helpers. She has really settled into Sedona and is part of the place. Killer her dog is still to the forefront with great care given him.
When an art gallery owner is found dead, Archer - Rarity's boyfriend is the first suspect. And of course he's not responsible for it, and Rarity and her group of "investigators" set out to find out who did it. They all meet on a Tuesday night to put together everything they have found out. Rarity keeps in touch with Drew from the local police as well.
Being a cozy mystery there is much that is about the local people and Shirley who works in the shop, has a dilemma as her husband is in a care facility and doesn't recognise her and she is enjoying a relationship with Rarity's next door neighbor.
I enjoyed all the goings on and the ups and downs of relationships. There are happenings that seem important but are they related to the central mystery? In the end I felt the revelation of the mystery killer is very much an anti climax rather than the climax of the story.
I would recommend that if this book appeals to you, read the previous three as stepping into the various characters and how they are related would need some solid previous reading.

Reading Between the Lies is the fourth cozy mystery in the Survivors’ Book Club Mystery series. A new art gallery is opening in Sedona and Rarity Cole and her friends go to the opening. When her boyfriend Archer finds a the gallery owner murdered the suspicion is cast on him after his past with the victim comes out. In order to save her boyfriend from suspicion, Rarity and her book club friends take on the case. They won’t stop until they uncover the true murderer, even if that means putting themselves in danger.
I have been with this series since the beginning and have really enjoyed it, this newest mystery was no different. I really enjoy the setting of this book and the cast of characters. The characters really add to this series and the variety of them keeps it interesting. This was a fun mystery that kept me guessing until the end, but I found the way the murdered was caught to be very anticlimactic this time around. I will keep coming back to this series time and time again and look forward to what comes next for Rarity and the gang. If you are looking for a fun cozy mystery series to start, give this one a try. The books can all be read as standalone but are better as a series!

I really enjoy reading this series, since I picked up the first one. Rarity and her group of book club friends (Sam, Jonathan, Shirley, Katie and many more) are always so interesting. You find yourself getting involved with their everyday problems and solving a murder on the side. You will find friendship, advice and support throughout all the characters. I have never been to Sedona, but I wouldn’t mind a vacation to visit all the small shops and meet these great characters. Rarity has a date night with Archer, and he takes her to a gallery opening. She meets Jackson, the owner and a former schoolmate of Archer. Jackson ends up being murdered and Archer becomes a prime suspect because of their past differences. Rarity and her Book Club group on the case. I recommend this book and hope that you pick it up and enjoy it. My only disappointment in the book was the ending felt really rushed and the culprit confessed to easily. I am always excited to read one of Lynn Cahoon's books, so I jumped at the chance to read the newest addition to the Survivors Book Club Mystery series, Reading Between the Lines. I enjoy a dive into the Sedona, AZ spirit atmosphere-- this one concerns tarot reading and vortex phenomena, genuine or not.
Rarity, Sam and Shirley gather their dates and go to a viewing at the new art gallery for a fun group date. Unfortunately a series of events, including a murder, causes trouble in the relationships. I was sad to witness some of what transpired, but the ending still gives me hope for the relationships in the books to come.
Though I am not a coffee drinker, this series keeps me returning for the cozy friend connections, characters I enjoy, and of course, Killer! The sense of community involvement/interest is also a strong pull.

Reading Between the Lies is the fourth book in the Survivor's Book Club Mysteries. I love all of Lynn Cahoon's series and this one is no exception. It follows Rarity who moves to Sedona to open a bookshop after surviving cancer and deciding to make a huge life change. She has made some great friends, adopted a chihuahua named Killer and started a survivor's book club. Her book club was suppose to be part reading club/part support group, but it's turned into a crime solving committee too.
The latest mystery surrounds a new luxury community/art gallery/spiritual compound and it's ecclect owner who is found dead.
Archer, Rarity's boyfriend is considered a suspect so of course Rarity and her group get on the case.
This book has a lot of side character and relationship interactions/plotlines as well. The mystery is not the only focus. I did find the ending a bit abrupt and that did take away from the flow of the book for me.
I still enjoyed the book and the series and would recommend it!

Reading Between the Lies by Lynn Cahoon left me feeling quite disappointed. I’m unsure if my tastes have evolved or if Cahoon’s writing has declined, but her recent books, including this one, haven’t resonated with me. The story feels more like a rough draft, filled with disjointed ideas and tangents, rather than a polished narrative with engaging characters and a plausible plot.
Given that Cahoon has published over 40 books and is an award-winning author, I expected much more. Unfortunately, I only made it halfway through Reading Between the Lies before resorting to skimming the rest. By the end, I was indifferent to the plot, the characters, and the setting.
I think I’ve reached my limit with this series. However, I plan to give her Tourist Trap series one more chance before deciding whether Lynn Cahoon remains on my TBR list. Here’s hoping for a return to the engaging storytelling that initially drew me to her work.

This series is just great. The mystery in this one was a good one. I had a feeling who the killer was early on but didn’t expect how it would end. I am loving the individual characters bigger picture stories. And I want to move to Sedona and live with all my book friends. Highly recommend this series and anything by Lynn Cahoon.

Reading Between the Lies is a great title for a mystery, especially one whose primary character owns a book store. While I won’t claim that Lynn Cahoon’s latest A Survivor’s Book Club Mystery is a great book, it is entertaining with a very likable returning cast of characters. I love that each of her returning characters has a story that continues and evolves in each book. I feel for Shirley who is walking a very difficult path. My biggest issues were that the action in the book seemed to be a bit more far fetched and the ending felt a bit rushed. Though Rarity Cole’s boyfriend is the primary suspect, it never felt like he was in any real danger of being arrested, and it seemed like Rarity spent too much time running off to investigate or interrogate someone. Still, this is a fun read, though I recommend the reader check out earlier books in the series first. Three Stars.

Good addition to the series. Rarity is enjoying her bookstore, spending time with her boyfriend Archer, hosting the bookstore's book club, and investigating murders. Unfortunately the latest murder they are investigating hits close to home when Archer is top of the suspect list. They will have to work hard to solve this one and keep Archer safe.
Love reading about Rarity, her bookstore, her book club (murder club), and the area around Sedona. The author's descriptions really make me want to visit. I enjoyed the mystery, but I did feel the solving of it was a little rushed. This didn't detect from my enjoyment at all.
