The sexy, cinnamon roll lumberjack offers me a ride into town, a stay at his cozy cabin, and eventually his bed—all things I can’t refuse.
After several flirty glances and heated mistletoe kisses, we create rules—no strings attached and no falling in love. Agreeing to the impossible might be my biggest mistake yet.
I visited the small town for one reason only—to prove a point to my father. Now I’ve got a fake boyfriend. A secret to keep hidden. And a choice to make that will determine more than just my future.
If you're searching for a spicy holiday romance with a protective cinnamon roll lumberjack and sassy heroine, this book is for you! A Very Merry Mistake is a stand-alone with a sweet as gingerbread happily ever after. This small-town contemporary romance has a dash of grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, secret identity, and tons of Southern goodness. Fade to black is NOT included!
Lyra Parish is a hopeless romantic obsessed with writing spicy Hallmark-like romances. When she isn’t immersed in fictional worlds, you can find her pretending to be a Vanlifer with her hubby. Lyra loves coffee, the great outdoors, authentic people, and living her best life.
I absolutely loved this book. I could picture everything so perfectly in my mind. It wasn’t too cheesy like most Christmas books. It was perfect.
The spicy scenes were amazing! 🔥🔥
Jake and Claire were made for each other. Perfect setting in a Christmas town named Merryville, great side characters like the other hot brothers, her sister, his dad the town Santa, and MawMaw.
I don’t want to spoil it, so just read it. Can’t wait to read the next one!
"Jake sounds like he fell right out of a Southern drama. Ever watched Yellowstone?"
It's sugar, it's spice and it's everything nice! If you like to spend your free time going through Hallmark movies like crazy, you're gonna love this one.
A cinnamon roll lumberjack cat daddy meets a stubborn and secretive city girl on a mission. Add one failed room reservation and a cup of snow storm to the mix and you'll end up in a steamy forced proximity adventure that will leave your heart and mind in a power outage (pun intended, iykyk) 😏
"I like it when you say that." "Oh, yeah?" His lips trail across my collarbone, peppering kisses up to my neck. "You're a very good girl."
JJ and CeCe are one of the swooniest couple this holiday season, so much that you'll forget there's a big plot twist coming your way. And boyyy, did it twist. Even after the secret was out and the mess was made, you could still feel the love and care they had for each other.
Overall, it was the best turn around and it checked all the boxes for a cozy, laugh out loud, spicy holiday story.
What to expect: ✨ small town ✨ forced proximity ✨ reversed grumpy/sunshine ✨ secret identity ✨ found family
Onto the next Jolly brother! 🎄
P.S. Thoren Bradley is the only correct embodiment of JJ. Do not come around me with any other suggestions 😌
It was okay, I guess. Insta-love and all, but I did enjoy it, well, at least for the most part.
Claire, 35, found herself stuck on the road when Jake, 36, drove by and offered her a lift to the motel she was headed to. Honestly, she was pretty annoying at first; for someone with no other choice, she was very stubborn about taking his help. I totally understand why she's cautious, but Jake really did everything to make her feel safe, and it took them quite some time going back and forth before she finally gave in. It's really frustrating to watch a character act all prideful and arrogant when they totally know they don't have any other options. Good for her, since Jake was patient and his southern manners really shines through.
When they arrived at the motel, they discovered that there was no reservation made under her name. With nowhere else to go, Jake steps in with his cabin offer. Again, Claire has no other option, but this time she gladly accepts his help and thanks him for it.
This is where the forced proximity and domesticity come into play. They spend most of their time together, and one thing leads to another, and before they know it, they're catching some feelings they said they wouldn't. I think this is in a span of two weeks??
Like I said, I enjoyed the insta-love aspect of it. However, the middle part of the book became somewhat monotonous as the plot largely consisted of Claire learning various things from Jake. She's a billionaire heiress and didn't know much, aside from her hobbies and business, so Jake was more than happy to teach her some of his family traditions and recipes.
The third-act breakup hit around the 65% mark and it dragged on for 9 days, and they were both pretty miserable. Claire was there to initially buy Jake's family land, but after getting to know them, she decided not to push through with the original plan. She apologized for not being upfront about who she really is and made up for it by paying the tax so that Jake's family could keep their land.
She went back to the small town and made the choice to stay for good, and bought her own house even though she wasn't sure if Jake would forgive her. But it's clear that they're still in love. He just can't imagine another day without her, so he decided to forgive her. They agreed to take things slow and really get to know each other again. This kicked off around the 75% mark, I believe, so the final quarter really focuses on them being in a relationship and all the sweet, romantic moments they share. It's cute but then got a bit repetitive because again, nothing much happened and the main problem was already resolved. 🤷♀️
It's kinda tough to put into words, like even though it's not a thick book, it felt like it was 500+ pages when it was really just over 300. It wasn’t a total snooze, but you could definitely sense that this story should've wrapped up by now, yet it's still going.
I feel like the plot gets a bit monotonous, with them just hanging out together or with their friends and family, doing the same activities over and over or just learning new things.
Overall, it was a pretty good read for me, though. I had a good time with it, but I really wish there was a bit more to the story than just the cute, everyday stuff between the MCs. It was a fun read, and it had me feeling giddy a bunch of times, so I wouldn't call it a flop.
Book info: - Small town romance - Strangers to lovers - Forced proximity - Insta-love - Found family - CEO x Lumberjack - Loss of loved one (past) - Christmas vibe - No cheating - No V - OM/OW - With separation (9 days) - HFN (7 mos later, engaged)
Notes: - OWD. Jake's ex definitely tried to stir up some trouble, but he's 100% over her. He popped the question in front of everyone five years ago, but his ex turned him down, and for a bit, he was the talk of the town. He moved on from her, but she's still living in the same small town, so they run into each other every now and then. The ex wanted him back and even lied to his parents that they're getting back so she could bring him over packed food. But since Claire is living with Jake, she kicked out the OW out of his cabin. 🤭 Also, during the MCs separation, the OW tried to get back with Jake, again. She's really pathetic. She kissed him out of nowhere, and it took Jake a moment to process it before he pushed her away. Claire saw this, and the way how he quickly put a stop to it. So this doesn't really bother her that much. - OMD. Her ex is actually working with her dad (colleagues). He lied to her, claiming his divorce was ongoing, but in reality, it wasn't at all. He's still married and stringing along Claire. He still wants her back, the audacity, but Claire didn't want to do anything with him anymore. The OM showed up at Jake's house, but he wasn't having any of it. He scared him off by pulling out his shotgun. - No V. Not info about their past; it wasn't clear when Claire broke things off with the OM. And as for Jake, he said he hasn't been with any women for a long time. I'm not sure how long, though.

I adored this book so much, I cannot even tell you! I hadn’t felt like this while reading a book in what feels like forever. My reading pace has been so slow these days but this book, I did not want to put it down and finished it so fast! It was just so cute and with all the right Christmas vibes! It totally got me in the holiday spirit and want to start watching movies and decorating!
But I just loved both the main characters! And they were so perfect together! Loved how they fit so well. And the hero’s family was so cute, as was the heroine’s sister! I’m super excited for his brothers to get their own books cause I need them!
A Very Merry Mistake was the perfect Christmas book, set in a small town with all the Christmas vibes and activities, two amazing main characters who are stuck together, lots of spice, some grumpy sunshine vibes, and a sweet fur baby that made things extra fun and sweet. Overall, an incredible read! I’m really excited about this series!

♥ Tropes: Christmas romance, small town, big city girl, stuck together, snowed in
No rating, DNF at 5%. Well this one was definitely not for me. It was a reverse grumpy-sunshine, with the hero being the seemingly nice, sunshine good ol’ country boy and the girl is the high class stubborn grump (aka: total bitch).
The story starts out with the heroine driving a huge rental truck, her expensive designer handbag on the passenger seat next to her (yes, lots of lame, awkward info dumping about her expensive clothes, shoes, purses, etc)… anyway, she’s driving along, her rental breaks down on the side of a deserted country road just as the snow storm of the century starts. She sees no other cars driving by to save her so she grabs her expensive suitcase and starts dragging it down the road, hoping to reach the little town she’s going to before dying of frostbite.
To her great luck, our hero drives by her after a minute or two. He stops to help her and give her a lift before the main part of the storm hits. She refuses to even look up at him, she refuses to acknowledge him for several minutes as he pleads with her to hurry and let him help before the storm hits…. and then finally she says “I don’t talk to strangers”. What an idiot! I hate stubborn, bitchy heroines.
Plus the fact that her goal in reaching this small town is to put the hero’s family business out-of-business…
I initially DNFed this book, because I was on a fantasy book high. Once I detached from that and tried to read it again with the right frame of mind knowing it’s a hallmark type Christmas book, I enjoyed this book a lot! It’s a really good Christmas read. Yes, it’s predictable, but it’s enjoyable! Literally a hallmark after dark kinda book with plenty of spice! Tall handsome lumberjack- you can’t go wrong with that. I recommend this if you love reading cheesy Christmas books.
Another day, another holiday romance 😍 and another one that I ate right up - this was just SO GOOD, and I did not want it to end! The Christmas-inspired town, the festive character names, the hallmark vibes, it was everything! 🥰 not to mention swoon worthy, protective, cinnamon roll lumberjacks 🥵 OBSESSED!
I came across Lyra’s writing a couple of months ago and she just has a way with words. Reeling you in and not letting go until the very last page - that is what I love in a romance, and Lyra just does it so effortlessly! Her characters are always so well-developed, interesting and fun, and the characters in this small town holiday romance are no exception!
What you can expect: 🎄 Holiday romance 🎅🏼 Opposites attract 🎄 Forced proximity 🎅🏼 Secret Identity 🎄 Found family
At this point I will read anything Lyra writes and I cannot wait for the next release! 😍 in the meantime, this beauty is out tomorrow! Time to get in that Christmas spirit 🥰✨
P.s. …..one bed…… 🔥🔥🔥
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you so much to @lyraparish for sending me this to review 🙏🏻
I'm usually a bit 'bah humbug' when it comes to Christmas novels, but I loved the idea of a lumberjack, a sassy heroine plus some Texas charm, so I thought I'd give it a go.
A Very Merry Mistake didn't disappoint! It had the sweetness of a Hallmark Christmas movie, but with some added spice to make things really interesting.
Jake and Claire made such a good pairing. Claire is highly strung and more than a little stubborn, but once you got past that, she revealed her softer side. At first Jake seemed a bit too perfect, a sweetheart and a gentleman, but as I got to know him throughout the story, we saw his flaws.
While there were plenty of tropes throughout the story, it still felt fresh and fun.
A special mention goes here to Tinsel, the cat who was a bit of a grump until you got to know her. Reminds me of myself a bit. I don't know if it's weird that I relate to a fictional cat??
Anyway, if you want a Christmas novel that is both sweet and spicy, you can't go wrong with A Very Merry Mistake.
My first holiday read of the season did not disappoint. Jake is the ooey-gooiest of cinnamon rolls and if that alone isn’t enough for you to pick up this book, how about this:
❄️ opposites attract ❄️ small town romance ❄️ forced proximity ❄️ romcom ❄️ holiday romance ❄️ secret identity ❄️ dual POV ❄️ Hallmark Christmas movie vibes ❄️ a lumberjack that looks like a Hemsworth ❄️ one seriously grumpy cat
Chock full of charm, humor, with both sweet and heat, A Very Merry Mistake delivered all the feel-good vibes. Do yourself a favor and take a trip to Merryville, TX to experience it for yourself. Consider it a Christmas gift to yourself. 😊
OMG this book was so much fun to read!!! The characters and their names especially the ones Merryville. I laughed and loved all their names especially Glenda and wearing the ruby red slippers!! So much fun!!! Back to Claire and Jake. These two come from two different worlds. One is the perfect Southern gentleman with all the manners and respect for women. He works hard but has horrible luck with women. He trusts to easily and has been hurt. I loved Jake and how he treated Claire. He saw her for who she really was and got her to see the world in a different way. Claire is from New York City and the daughter of a millionaire. She had done everything he dad wanted and was out to make him happy. She never stood up for herself and like Jake, always went for the wrong people. These two together have instant chemistry and while they do the whole we can be friends who have sex until you leave, you could see it building into more and more. The one thing that I loved the most besides Jake and Claire was how the author described the charming little town and all the Christmas activities that happened in it. It was like a Hallmark movie with steam! I seriously loved everything about this book and all the characters in it!! I seriously can't wait until Hudson and Emma's book to see how that plays out! I know it will so good as well!!!
I absolutely loved Jake and Claire. They are both easily relatable characters in so many ways. But what I loved most was that they both brought the best out in one another.
The chemistry between Jake and Claire was obvious from the start but they ignored that as neither really wanted to go down that path. But when the living arrangements forced them to get to know one another, sometimes fate makes that decision for you.
This book plays out beautifully and so organically. Yes, there is some drama and past issues due to arise that cause some unfortunate bad decisions, but the ending is so worth it.
Lyra delivers a perfect holiday romance - one that will have you smiling and feeling nothing but sugary goodness long after the book is over.
this book had me h o o k e d from the get go! i needed a cute, hallmark type feel book to get me out of my reading slump and this book did just the trick. now i'm on the roll with holiday books, GIVE ME THEM ALL.
i absolutely adored both MC's in the book. claire was lovely and i felt like i could really relate with her. jake reminded my of my husband, but with a dirtier mouth (hehe).
i think what absolutely sold me on this book, and lyra's books in general, are the fact that they're relatable. events that happen within the book can happy irl and it really allows the reader to connect in so many ways!
5 star review A Very Merry Mistake (Merry #1) by Lyra Parish
Lyra Parish is a relatively new author to me but what I have read I have really enjoyed . A Very Merry Mistake is everything I look for in a romance book. The story was well written, entertaining and I quickly became invested in Claire and Jake’s story.
I love stories set in small towns and this one drew me right in. As you would expect from a story based in a small town, everyone is up in everyone’s business and that just added an additional layer to the story. The characters are quirky, and I cannot wait to read more in the series.
Super cozy and cute holiday read! The spice was great and the town and scene setting was really well done! This was a little long for me but overall I did enthuse read and would recommend it to anywho enjoys holiday romance reads!
A lot like hook, line and sinker by Tessa Bailey. Similar premise but with a Christmas theme. Wasn’t able to complete this one, found the characters too uninteresting & simplistic. Didn’t enjoy the dialogue. But this is a very subjective view and I’m sure many will enjoy the story.
This was definitely A VERY MERRY MISTAKE!and world record for fastest DNF for me.
Ugh. Another disappointing Christmas romance. 🤦🏻♀️
I checked out as soon as the FMC started acting like a bitch. She’s on her way to Merryville, the weather is bad. Her rental breaks down. She’s aware of a snow storm that’s about to hit, and acts like a f*cking 4 year old when JJ, who’s the only car on the road by the way. Stops and offers help. Woooow. What an asshole right?! (Insert biggest eye roll, I might hurt myself with).
Not my vibe at all. Great for you if you loved it or wanna try it. I hated it. The end.
A warm and loving Christmas story with charismatic characters and I really enjoyed the setting in a small town called Merryville. A spicy romance with Christmas vibes, some drama and cute humor🎄
A book that’s set in a town that celebrates Christmas all year long….let me start packing!!!!!! This book had just the right amount of swoon worthy moments and the perfect amount of spice! JJ is the perfect fit for Claire and their chemistry is off the charts. They had some obstacles to overcome and I’m happy they ended up with the HEA. Tinsel was also a great addition to the story 🥰
I received an ARC of this book and am giving my honest opinion
The cringiest dialogue. The whole plot could have been done in 100 pages. It was just drug out way longer than needed. She’s a billionaire? Really? Of course it is easy for her to give up her New York life and move to Texas because she has billions of dollars. It wasn’t even a struggle. Also when she went back to New York for a week, when she returned they were both acting like they hadn’t seen each other in 2 years. He was suppose to be 36? 39? But he talked like he was much younger. And I didn’t think the author did the whole “southern gentleman/ accent well at all. The spice scenes were almost too much for me and I audibly gasped when they did butt stuff. Did not sign up for that. Has this author ever been in a relationship? Because nobody has a sex drive that high. The christmassy theme of the town was over the top. Didn’t find it charming. Was annoyed and had this face 🤨 for a lot of the book. Don’t waste your time.
