**'Try not to let your storytelling become problematic. At times maybe try to astonish and even provoke your readers. Also, try using as many adjectives as possible. Lastly, just try enticing your readers..'

Entertaining read!
Such a surprising and enjoyable storyline -- even well-paced and well told plotline. And it looks like this might be an ongoing series from the cliffhanger.
Highly recommended book!

A truly captivating sapphic political thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish! The drama and suspense are masterfully woven, and the writing and pacing are spot-on, making for an exhilarating read. While I was thoroughly entertained, I wasn't entirely sold on the romance—Miranda and Sarah didn't quite feel like a good match to me. Still, the tension and intrigue made up for it, making this a compelling story overall.

Usually with a title The Senator’s (something), one could conclude before reading that the senator would be a deplorable human being thus, the wife seeking solace and love elsewhere. With this Senator’s Widow, the formula is not different, however, the author devised the flow of the story so that information and twists came at the reader from different angles and pace thus, making it entertaining and exciting. I enjoyed reading this book.

The Senator’s Widow is Aoibh Wood’s first venture into romance, and in my opinion, stepping out of her comfort zone was a brilliant decision.

Sarah is bodyguard to Miranda, a woman waiting in the wings for her abusive, ultra conservative husband to become president. Their relationship shifts between love and animosity, with Sarah navigating Miranda's ice-queen facade while grappling with their shared desire to bury a regrettable one-night stand.

Both women are reluctant to admit feelings, but when Miranda is forced to go into hiding, Sarah refuses to leave her side. While uncovering the political secrets that threaten their freedom and lives, Sarah takes Miranda home to the Appalachian highlands, where they confront not only external threats but also their own inner demons.

Aoibh Wood entwines romance with politics seamlessly. The two MCs don’t have it easy, with baggage and societal expectations, ensuring a bumpy ride to the inevitable happily ever after. The family bonds surrounding Sarah, and then ultimately, Miranda, adds depth to the narrative, introducing relatable and significant side characters.

The Senator’s Widow is a thrilling ride from the first page. You definitely don’t want to miss it.

Politics is always a mess, and in many cases, corruption rampart. Such is the case here, and it sets the stage for the story, Sarah taking Miranda with her when Senator Mitchell gets assassinated. Of course, all is not what its seems, and with Miranda as the prime suspect, their time on the run is always going to have an expiry date.

While Aoibh has thus far written urban fantasy, The Senator's Widow is her first foray into contemporary romance, and she does it well, following a lot of the tropes present for the genre. It's an enjoyable story, with plenty of growth and sweet moments, as well as angst. It's certainly nowhere near as dark as the Cait Reagen books, either. The focus is very much on their relationship, and the nature of the location that they travel to, so not as much action there as I thought there could be, with Sarah being an ex-secret service agent. It wraps up well and in a believable way, and I did rather like the epilogue. All in all, a good read

I just finished The Senator’s Widow by Aoibh Wood, and while there were brief moments where the character development was intriguing, the book ultimately fell short for me. The relationship between Sarah and Miranda had potential, and their dynamic was captivating at times, but it wasn't enough to carry the story.

I was hoping for a more mature sapphic novel with deeper character exploration. Unfortunately, the adults in this book often felt like they were stuck in the mindset of teenagers, with most of their hardships stemming from childhood events that seemed to dominate their present lives. This left the characters feeling flat and lacking the depth I was craving.

If you're looking for something light and surface-level, this might work for you.

Four and a half stars. I enjoyed this book with its topical background of the darker side of politics, and we all hope for some brightness there. The characters were well-drawn and the story was fast-paced. It showed the differences in families and lives and came together for a satisfying HEA.

This was a great sapphic thriller… which is a pretty unusual thing to find myself saying, I guess. It wasn’t necessarily the best in either genre separately? But a great combination of the two.

Let me get my gripes out of the way first. On the one side, “let me be a jerk to this person and push them away ‘for their own good’” is a little tired… what gives you the right to make that decision FOR them? On the other side, if are attempting then why did they choose to route the entire plan through especially when judging by one of the hotel scenes ? There were also some critical decisions I wish the main characters hadn’t made offscreen, such as .

On the other hand, Sarah and Miranda were great together, professionally and, uh, otherwise. Sarah’s family was great, and the perspective on rural Kentucky was wonderful, and much more nuanced than I feel like I’ve normally seen. Plus, OMG Miranda, the end of the epilogue was hysterical! There was a great mix of suspense and action and personal relationships over the course of the book, and the slow release of important background and information kept the tension going.

All in all a book I’m happy to have read.

Suspense and sacrifice

Aoibh Wood’s The Senator’s Widow echoes for me many of the feelings evoked by Jen Lyon’s The Senator’s Wife. Both are books worthy of a read.

The Senator’s Widow spotlights the power, passion, and machinations of U.S. politics, with Miranda as the manipulative wife of homophobic, racist, and ruthless Senator Mitchell Reichert who’s about to announce his candidacy for president.

The night prior to the announcement, Miranda stumbles upon a dangerous secret, so she enlists her sometimes bodyguard and one-time hookup, ex-Secret Service agent Sarah Rogers, to accompany her to the launch.

The senator’s campaign is the briefest ever recorded as a bullet cuts him down on stage. Officials target Miranda as their prime suspect, prompting Sarah to take her into hiding until the real plot and shooter can be sorted.

The pair head to Sarah’s Appalachian home to lie low and regroup with the help of Sarah’s family. The locale and familial support they find in the ravaged coal community helps both women begin to heal from their pasts, start to open up to each other, and consider their priorities for the future.

The Senator’s Widow delivers an action-filled adventure with a captivating sapphic romance woven throughout. At first glance, Sarah and Miranda seem worlds apart: Sarah, a resilient free spirit, and Miranda, the webspinner for her controlling, bigoted congressman husband. Yet, as they find themselves on the run and in constant danger, surprising similarities between them emerge.

Sarah and Miranda shine as fully realized characters. Sarah’s blend of compassion and fierce strength makes her an ideal heroine. At the same time, Miranda’s icy exterior—an armor she’s worn for much of her life—conceals a heart that’s both compassionate and formidable. Together, they form a powerful duo whose story kept me hooked. Sarah’s family adds another layer to the narrative, bringing depth and richness to the unfolding tale.

If you’re after a captivating story with sizzling romance, I highly recommend picking this one up!

The Most Hilarious Closing Line Ever!

You’ve seen the synopsis of this book from the author so I won’t repeat it here, but I do want to say that this is a great book. There’s the mystery, being in the run, the relentless chemistry between the main characters, and it’s so very well written.

I had a lot of fun reading this but yes, that was the best ending sentence to any Sapphic romance I’ve read in a long time. But read the book!

Aoibh Wood is a new writer for me. I didn't know what to expect and went on the reviews of reviewers I follow. This story had me staying up late to finish it. The two main characters weren't perfect, and I liked that because it made them more believable as did their building relationship. I liked the twist of fate when karma is handed out. This was smooth reading. I will be reading more by this writer.

A Great Political Thriller

This book was my introduction to Aoibh Wood novels. It won’t be my last. This novel has suspense, mystery and two main characters who are a bodyguard and a senator’s wife whose husband is abusive as well as running for President. This book hits home with what is politically happening today. I couldn’t stop reading until the end.

Political Thriller and Sapphic Romance

Sarah Rogers is a former Secret Service agent who runs her own security company. Her top client is Miranda Danbury Mitchell, wife of Senator Mitchell. Miranda is terrified of her husband and Sarah is determined to protect her, whatever it takes. A perfect ending for a great read.

Something different

Really good story that romped along between a mystery from both main characters pasts, current intrigue in political circles, Thelma and Louis road trip, corrupt officials etc. Good and bad family dynamics it's all here, plenty of angst and 🔥 times, a well written book with an amusing ending.

The wheelings and dealings of the corridors of the Senator's home and office. What an appropriate tale of intrigue and the love of a bodyguard to the Senator's wife. Not only is this thriller well written but Abby Crayden's narration is top class
