If I Go Missing

Rate this book
If you’re reading this, I’ve gone missing.

I close the binder I’ve been writing in, and walk into the living room. As I stare out of the window at your house next door, I think about all the things I stand to lose if someone comes for me. My handsome, loving husband, who has no idea what I’ve done. My family, who have supported me no matter what. This beautiful home near the ocean, where I thought I would be safe.

Everyone says that I’m paranoid, but I just think I’m prepared. My secrets have placed me in terrible danger.

So if the worst happens, this binder contains everything you’ll need to find me, hidden in a place only you could guess. You’ve always known me best of everyone, ever since we were girls. You’ll be able to put the pieces together and uncover the truth.

Only you can find me. But you’ll need to do it fast.

Because if you don’t, all your lies will come to light too…

Did you know that the hashtag #incaseIgomissing has close to 70M views on TikTok?

If you are a true crime junkie, you’ll love this psychological thriller that centers around compiling those ‘If I Go Missing’ viral binders that let you save and store personal information that could help authorities find you in case you go missing. If you haven’t heard of these before, the basic premise is that with everything in one place, police don’t have to waste time executing search warrants or go hunting for details that have already been compiled for them. I know what you’re thinking, I wondered that, too. What if these ‘life saving’ binders get into the wrong hands?

This is the premise that Leslie Wolfe examines.

I binge-read this book because it gave me a much-needed escape into a fictional world and it had the ability to do that in a grasping, gritty and memorable manner.

Wolfe (1) encourages readers to dig deeper. In this case, if the protagonist had dug deeper rather than walked away from a relationship in her youth, she could have unmasked an unrecognizable evil force and it might have led to lives being saved, or least of all, a different trajectory for all involved. Wolfe also (2) continually reminds us that the forces of evil, the ones we least expect, are entirely psychological and that even though the damage done isn’t visible, it’s still disabling. Finally, but equally important is (3) her use of dialogue. I love that she hones in on what’s important to us when we are under stress and how our interactions are different than when things are going smoothly. I liken her narratives to a funnel. Wolfe funnels our attention to how we interact in these circumstances rather than our surroundings. It makes for a tension-filled and pacey read.

Sorry for my lack of details, but I can’t tell you any more because I want you to be affected by this book.

If the past few years have brought anything to light, it’s that we’re now living lives that feel less safe and less certain. Wolfe capitalizes on this. She investigates the evil that goes unchecked, our culture’s obsession with true crime, our need for control and writes to stimulate that psychological effect that happens when we read about something chaotic happening that a ‘normal person’ figures out. She’s taken the majority of things we feel we need and popped them between the pages of a fantastic mystery!

Wolfe has elevated herself to my auto-read list.

#incaseigomissing is not a new concept. Determinedly, Alana is strives to rally her fellow teachers to create binders for the students at her school. The idea is that if a person has a binder that contains relative information, even locks of hair for DNA purposes, lives could be saved. If this binder was made available to law-enforcement, someone that unfortunately would go missing would have a better chance to be found within the first 48 hours than someone who does not have a binder.

While Alana is pushing her agenda, she is about to have new neighbors. In fact, it is a couple she knew from high school, and Alana thought she would never see them again. They are Ray and Chloe, and even though Alana is married to Daniel, just seeing Ray again brings back memories of passion and moments of longing that she thought were long since buried. Meanwhile, there is strong tension between Alana and Chloe, especially since Chloe is now married to Alana’s first love.

When one of Alana’s students goes missing, not only is the importance of the binder brought to the fore, but for more than one reason, Alana’s character takes on the role of an unreliable narrator. There is a lot of history that is soon uncovered about Alana, and this throws the story into full throttle. In some cases, Alana’s consideration of the past comes into play, all while present events intensify.

With chilling words, the binder would start off with, “If you’re reading this, I’ve gone missing”. Definitely chilling, making this a compelling read, one that kept me turning pages late into the night.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Chloe moves in next door to Alana, her old high school friend. Ray, Chloe’s husband, is Alana’s ex and the sexual tension comes flowing back like it never left. Suddenly, people close to Alana start to go missing. Can Alana get to the bottom of this mystery? And does she really know her neighbours as well as she thinks she does?

If I Go Missing is a fast paced psychological thriller full of lies and deceit. I felt like I really got behind Alana and was desperate for her to find out what was going on, especially with Taylor. I enjoyed the twists and turns and the ending with Stella had my heart in my mouth and adrenaline pumping.

“The funny thing about lies… they grow on you like a second skin, each new lie a patch stitched to other lies, while truth withers underneath, suffocated. And so, the truth dies smothered, making room for the new, shiny coat of lies to prevail, to grow stronger. But once someone or something rips off a piece, the entire web unravels, exposing the ugly, contorted nature of who we really are, who we were before we covered ourselves in pretence”

I’ve never read anything by Leslie Wolfe before, but definitely would again. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my advanced copy.

This book really seems to be one of those that readers love or hate… it started out engaging but once I got to know the main characters I really wasn’t impressed with any of them. They were so unlikeable and I really struggled to keep going with this book and wanted to skip huge chunks of it - that’s never a good sign!
In the end I carried on but the end also left me regretting my decision, 2.5 stars rounded up for this read. I am really disappointed as I wanted to like this book so much!

I usually love Leslie Wolfe's books. I did not enjoy this one. I did not like any of the characters. The entire story made no sense. It was so melodramatic and repetitive. I kept reading it thinking it would get better. It didn't. Anyhow, I will read Leslie's future books. She has written so many wonderful books. This one just wasn't one of those for me.

This book has the most aggravating ditzy main character I have ever come across in mystery, psychological, so-called thriller. by the time I had read the first four chapters I was ready to shake her till her teeth rattled. It was all I could do to finish the book and the ending certainly made me wish I had never finished the book.

This was a quick read!!

Now, I have only read one Leslie Wolfe book before this, and I didn't like it. But this was a pleasant surprise! I think the fact that I didn't read any reviews before reading it helped keep the fun aspect.

It wouldn't be a thriller if the main character wasn't the most insufferable person in the book, right? Seems most thrillers I have read recently follow that path.

The fact that all the characters were untrustworthy made this book even better for me! It makes you just want more and more!!

Leslie Wolfe's pacing is so much better in this book, compared to "The Surgeon". I may have to read more of her work now!

Su šia autore susipažinau perskaičiusi "Chirurgę". Šis trileris man tikrai patiko, tad pratęsti pažintį norėjosi man ir toliau.

Jeigu ji to nepadarys laiku.. Į paviršių iškils daug bjaurių paslapčių..

Gana neįpareigojantis, bet tikrai įtraukiantis skaitinys. Puslapiai vertėsi tikrai greitai ir norėjosi sužinoti šio pasakojimo kulminaciją.
Man patiko segtuvų idėja. Nebuvau girdėjusi nieko panašaus. Tik mano akimis yra ir minusų. Jeigu informacija pakliūtų į blogas rankas, tikrai nesibaigtų geruoju.
Šis trileris man patiko truputį mažiau nei "Chirurgė", bet turėjau gerą laiką su šia istorija. Ir manau, jog ateityje tikrai skaitysiu ir kitas šios autorės knygas.
Ši storija puikiai parodė, jog melo kojos trumpos.

"Tikėjausi, kad pakovosi dėl manęs. "

Skaičiau ir kiek daug skirtingų jausmų aplankė. Atrodo įdomu, tema su segtuvais man patiko, tačiau man juose atskleidžiama informacija pasirodė per daug svarbi, tad jei pakliūtų į netinkamas rankas iškiltų didelis pavojus.

Man tikrai labai patiko, skaitėsi greitai ir įtraukiančiai.

Some have written they couldn’t put it down. I was the opposite, as I couldn’t pick it up. I forced myself to get through it and was relieved at the end. What a group of psychos the characters were and one was a school teacher. It just wasn’t for me.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Upon reading the synopsis for 'If I Go Missing', choosing to read the book was a no-brainer. Especially with one's prior experience with the author's previous book, The Surgeon. In this her latest release, Leslie Wolfe created a riveting, fast-paced tale where deceit, secrets, betrayal and mysteries abound. Sit back, grab some chocolate and prepare for a thrilling ride.

Now, this is a story which one needs to go into blindly so that one can appreciate the surprises it has to offer. The characters behave as one would expect given the situation they find themselves in. One thing for sure is you will either despise them, love them or pity them. There are times you may want to slap some sense into a few. The main character whose POV drove the story had me shaking my head for the majority of the story. How can one person be so clueless. Strangely enough, her actions paid off in the end. Lucky for her, she got spared being sacrificed on the altar of divorce, which would have been justified for all the lies she told.

'If I Go Missing', remind readers to exercise caution in accepting things and taking at face value. There is always a hidden agenda in every action taken, whether good or bad. In this instance, the majority were bad, as the narrator would discover. As the story unfolds, so do the secrets and lies. It reflected the effectiveness of the in case I go missing binder. A concept which the narrator has been pushing from the beginning of the story. This one had me turning the pages as I needed answers. Boy oh boy! It gave me more than I expected. I am still reeling from the revelations. It was quite a compelling read.

Fans of psychological Thrillers will find 'If I Go Missing' compelling. I can't wait to see what next Wolfe has in store for her readers. This review was originally posted on Totally Addicted to Reading

„Melas – keistas dalykas.

Man patiko, kad šiame psichologiniame trileryje autorė palietė dingimo temą.

I should have left this as a DNF when I considered it at 40%, I predicted everything except the brother’s connection, still don’t really get that and don’t understand why Chloe basically gets off scratch free. It was just boring and I think it’s also biased of me because I HATE high school best friends/ high school lovers trope. It just doesn’t make sense to me why high school has that much of a grip on you years later as an adult, this one made more sense than most since there was the baby given up but the focus wasn’t really on the emotions attached to the child but attached to the lover. Anyways. Hated all of the characters just all felt fake and dumb.

The synopsis sounded so interesting, but then half the book was over and there were so many unresolved problems racking up! The main character’s self loathing and thoughts really annoyed me, making me think she was guilty for sure. Almost DNF but decided to push through to get some answers…which even then I still was confused on!

What a WILD read. I couldn’t put this down, when I did, I needed to know more. I had a hunch on where everything was going and was somewhat right but wtf??? That was crazy. Disappointed in the ending, nearly gave 3 or 3.5 buttttttt I still very much enjoyed this book. If you want to be kept on your toes, this is right for you!

This wasn’t my first time reading a book by this author and it most definitely won’t be my last.

This was a ride.

I’ve said this before in reviews of other books but I love it when I feel like I can’t trust any of the characters. It adds such a great depth to the book that leaves me hanging on every single page.

I had no idea where this was going to end because I had made my own theories and I was way off.

This is another great book to pick up if you’re wanting to dip your toes into the genre.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with this ARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I don’t usually read this genre, that was pretty crazy. Contrived and totally unbelievable, the plot was still a page turner as I wondered what would happen next. The main character’s inner monologue was annoying to deal with as her priorities seemed pretty messed up to me often. The book was pretty absurd, with the characters behaving in non realistic ways. Like I said not my usual thing but an easy read that kept me turning the page and I got some enjoyment out of it, mostly from seeing what a train wreck it is. I’ll give a grade of D+

Disappointing

Spoiler Alert:
I usually like the author’s books, but not this one. It is a deviation from the strong heroines like in the Tess Winnett series. Instead the protagonist’s character is deeply flawed. I found it irritating as the story progressed. She is passive, and not passively aggressive, but weak. She let her friend Chloe steal her lover boyfriend Ray, and never confronted her. Worse, she continued to hang out with her. And she never told Ray she was pregnant. Instead, she spins lies upon lies, to justify her weakness, not only to herself but others, including her husband who loves her. And it stretches the imagination that Chloe, a fashion magazine writer, would move into a new house without seeing it first. A better ending would be her husband Daniel leaving her for good, while she is still pining for Ray!

Kind of boring honestly. I can't believe I stuck to it and read the whole book, I kept waiting for it to get good since so many people loved this book. Definitely wouldn't describe it as a thriller.
