Derek Langley can’t keep an assistant to save his life. He’s grumpy, demanding, and sometimes mean, which mirrors his reputation in court. Derek doesn’t have time to coddle an employee, so when the temp agency informs him their next placement will be the last, he knows he’s doomed.
Maya Sterling is excited to move to Seattle. She wants to be closer to her siblings and her new friends, and a position with a temp agency fits the bill for her new life in the city. She doesn’t plan on walking in and finding a sexy British grouch for a boss, but his gruff nature doesn’t really bother her. In fact, she’s attracted to his rough-around-the-edges nature.
They quickly realize the attraction is mutual and steam up the office. But Maya’s position with Derek is temporary, and she knows she must maintain a professional distance to preserve her sanity.
Will they be able to resist each other? Or does fate have other plans?

The Substitute (Single in Seattle, #5.5) by Kristen Proby 4 stars M/F Romance I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
This is a super quick, cute story about Derek and Maya.
Maya is coming home after spending some time in Europe and once she realizes that no matter what her parents say, they want her to move to Seattle and follow her heart, she goes to Seattle. Maya is still figuring out what she truly wants from her life, so she goes through a temp agency to find a job.
Derek is known for being a grump. He has a difficult time keeping help because of his brusk demeanor and sometimes downright mean words. He knows it's something he should work on, but he just can't seem to find the time.
When Maya walks into Derek's office, there is instant chemistry. These two have to figure out how to work together while keeping each other at a pleasant friendship distance. Despite their attraction, both know that mixing business and pleasure can lead to disasters.
Will Maya thaw Derek's icy demanor or will she throw in the towel and find another way? This is a super quick read that will have you smiling.
I enjoyed the office romance between Derek and Maya. You could see the pull between the two of them from the beginning and wanted them to be together. I was unhappy when it was over because I enjoyed it so much.
I love going back to Seattle, and this novella is a great catchup featuring Maya Sterling and Derek Langley. Maya is the sister of Grayson and Sidney Sterling. She has returned to the States and moved to Seattle to be closer to her siblings. It is time for her to figure out her life and dreams. But first a temp job, to find her direction.
Derek is having trouble keeping assistance since the perfect one retired. Enter Maya, her first assignment. She is perfectly organized, but the underlying attraction has them both flustered. I loved the story; my only complaint is the length; these novellas are never long enough, and I always want more.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review
5 Star Review The Substitute (Single in Seattle #5.5) by Kristin Proby
It was great to be back in The Single In Seattle world for Derek Langley and Maya Sterling’s story.
The attraction between them is intense and they soon find it impossible to resist. Although a quick read, Ms. Proby packed a lot into this well written, entertaining story.
Derek and Maya were well suited and I enjoyed the push and pull dynamic of their relationship as their relationship progressed.
I absolutely loved The Substitute by Kristen Proby, it is an incredible enemies to lovers/age gap love story. It is a novella in her Single in Seattle series. Once again Kristen Proby shows that she is an amazing storyteller. Kristen Proby is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors to read. It was impossible to put The Substitute down and I loved every moment on every page. Who does not love hot sexy men, strong females, loving families, and friends, who always support one another? I really enjoy how the book is written in the first person from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting inside their minds and knowing their thoughts and how they really feel. The Substitute is an enemies to lovers/age gap love story and is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. The Substitute is filled with all those things that I have come to love and expect in a Kristen Proby love story, and she did not disappoint, especially with the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. The Substitute is the story of Derek Langley, lawyer and Maya Sterling administrative assistant. Derek has hard time keeping temporary administrative assistants, and the temporary agency informed him that his next placement will be his last and he needs to be kinder. Maya was travelling through Europe and recently relocated to Seattle to be closer to her brother, Gray and will be subletting her sister, Sydney’s condo and needs a temporary job. Maya takes the job as Derek’s temporary assistant and introduces herself as “the substitute” since she only plans to be there for the length of her contract. Maya and Derek initially do not hit it off, mostly because of Derek’s interest in Maya. Things quickly heat up between the two of them as they spend time together, and then just a quickly cool off. I love the chemistry between Maya and Derek. I love the easy banter of the conversations between Maya and Derek that flows so easily. I love all the heart-to-heart conversations that take place in The Substitute. I love Gray’s reaction to the age gap between Maya and Derek and how Stella sets him straight. I love that Derek’s reaction to Maya’s makeover and new wardrobe. I love the ending of the love story, and how both Maya and Derek admit their feeling for one another. My favorite part is the epilogue that goes beyond a happily ever after and it is told from Derek’s perspective and how it takes place seven years later. The Substitute is filled with poignant and bittersweet moments as well as plot twists that I have come to love and expect in a Kristin Proby love story. I love the storyline in The Substitute, the romance, and the family dynamics, it was such an enjoyable book to read. I love how Derek’s family dynamic changes in the story, and I love the family dynamic in The Substitute the characters feel like family and friends. I enjoyed all the interactions between the Sterlings and Stella’s cousins, it feels like real family love and makes me laugh at their teasing. Who does not love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? I loved all the characters in The Substitute, and I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed The Substitute, who does not love an enemies to lovers/age gap love story. Highly recommend this incredible love story. Received an advanced copy from the author.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆ This is book 5.5 in the Single in Seattle series, and also another 1001 Dark Nights in the series; it is fun to get these short novellas to give us a quick fix between longer reads – and this is one is fun and frenetic.
The unexpected chemistry between the grumpy, rude lawyer, Derek, and the calm, unfazed Maya burns the pages. Of course things will not run smoothy because he is not really able to process what is happening to his very nature now that he has met her – and Maya is so wonderfully unflappable, and so in tune with her own needs, that we are treated to a whirlwind of a romance.
It is great to catch up with previous couples, two of which, of course, involve Maya's siblings, and the epilogue is really delicious and funny!

THE SUBSTITUTE by Kristen Proby is a contemporary, adult, erotic, novella found in the author’s SINGLE IN SEATTLE series, and a part of the 1001 Dark Nights multi-authored series. This is attorney Derek Langley, and PA Maya Sterling’s story line. THE SUBSTITUTE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. May is Grayson Sterling’s sister (The Scandal)
Told from dual first person perspectives (Derek and Maya) THE SUBSTITUTE follows Maya Sterling as she struggles with a direction in life. Having spent six months touring Europe, Maya returns home, excited about a move to Seattle but leaving her parents is hard, in the face of her mother’s ongoing failing health. Working for a temp agency, Maya begins a thirty day trial period with attorney Derek Langley, a man whose reputation as a difficult boss, and toxic environment precedes his introduction to our story line heroine but form the outset Maye refuses to bow to Derek’s demands, and in the end, places her own boundaries when they both cross the line. What ensues is the rapidly building relationship between our story line couple, and the potential fall-out as Maya’s time with Derek comes to a close.
The relationship is one of immediate attraction but Derek doesn’t do relationships; he’s demanding and over bearing; and expects perfection from everyone in his life. Falling for Maya was never in the future but Derek knew Maya was the woman to calm his heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate.
We are reintroduced to several members of Maya’s family including her brother Grayson Sterling, and both Maya and Derek’s parents.
THE SUBSTITUTE is a story of family, friendships, relationships and love; forgiveness and acceptance. The fast paced premise is enthralling and captivating; the romance is fast and furious; the characters are determined, strong and dynamic.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 is Book 5.5 in the Single in Seattle series by Kristen Proby, featuring a spicy Grumpy/sunshine, forbidden, office romance for Maya Sterling and her boss Derek Langley. It’s time for Maya to finally figure out what she wants to do with her life. In the mean time, she takes a temp job as a personal assistant to high-powered attorney, Derek. Maya is fantastic at her job, but the sparks that immediately fly between them are impossible to ignore. The passion was explosive and life-altering, but it can’t happen again. Her position is temporary, so they must resist each other!! Right?
I loved diving in for a fast-paced insta-love for a Sterling sibling!! Maya certainly brought the sassy banter and attitude to go with the fiery chemistry she was throwing with Derek!!🥵 I loved they way she could break through his grumpy exterior, and draw out a real sweetheart!😍 I was thrilled to see some of the other characters from the series as well! It’s really hard to pull off a well-rounded story in such a short format, but this one does that and more with an awesome epilogue at the end! If you haven’t read this series, you can still enjoy this one!
I received an ARC for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶🌶🌶
Oh, how fun it is to return to The Single In Seattle series by Kristen Proby!! This time we get to watch Maya Sterling, sister to Grayson and Sydney Sterling, get her HEA!! Now that Maya’s mom is doing much better health wise Maya is able to pursue her own life’s dreams. Maya starts by moving to Seattle to be near her siblings and takes a job as a temp in hopes of figuring out what she wants to do with her life. Her first assignment is to be personal assistant to Derek Langley (lawyer). Derek is a very handsome attorney who just can’t seem to keep an assistant to save his life until Maya. In his words, “I’ve never had such a visceral reaction to a woman within minutes and she is my bloody assistant!”. Yep ladies, Derek is British!! Love those British accents!! Oh, I forgot to tell you Derek is handsome, an alpha-hero, and once you get to know him you realize that he has a heart-of-gold. Maya has the perfect personality to go head-to-head with Derek and his grumpy/true British personality. Maya also learns to accept and embrace her true desire of what she wants out of life. To me that is one of the most beautiful parts of Maya and Derek’s story. Love the banter between Derek and Maya, it is so fun, sassy, and s*xy. Spice level….get a fan ladies!! This is a great little story for such a deserving character! If you have read and loved any Kristen Proby book you will also love, The Substitute.
How good is it to be back in Seattle!! THE SUBSTITUTE is book #5.5 in Kristen Proby's Single In Seattle series. It is a grumpy/sunshine, age gap, forbidden office romance which was entertaining, steamy, and a fun read.
Maya Sterling has moved to Seattle to be closer to her brother and sister. She's been lucky enough to find a position as a temporary Personal Assistant, which will give her time to work out exactly what she wants to do with her life. Attorney Derek Langley has a problem keeping his PAs, his temperament isn't exactly welcoming and sometimes he is just downright nasty. From the moment Maya walks through his door, he knows he's in trouble as the chemistry and attraction between them is explosive.
THE SUBSTITUTE packs a lot of punch for a novella. It is a feelgood read that brightened up my otherwise very dismal day. It was fun to catch up with Maya's siblings, Grayson and Sydney, but it was more fun seeing a grumpy Brit meet his match. A wonderful addition to this series.
The Substitute Derek and Maya Age gap (10yrs), grumpy/sunshine, office romance
A very short story set in the Single in Seattle world. Maya the last Sterling sibling finds love.
Derek, the ever grumpy lawyer has had trouble keeping an assistant since his long time secretary retired. Having fired everyone the temp agency has sent in, he’s down to the last one. Maya is just back from enjoying a trek through Europe. She needs a job, but is still unsure what she wants to do long term. So temping is a perfect solution. When grumpy meets this effervescent sunshine his world is instantly turned upside down. He has no idea how much this woman will impact his life. This was a cute story. I loved both characters. Even the gruff Derek has a soft center when it comes to Maya. I loved their banter. She was not afraid of him at all, and stood up to him at every turn. I loved seeing some of the other characters from the series pop in and out of the story. As with most short stories this one moves fast. Very fast. The epilogue gives you a glimpse into their future happy ever after.
The Substitute was a quick, super fun read. Gray's sister, Maya, is back from Europe and starting over in Seattle. Problem is she doesn't know what she wants to do. In the mean time she takes a temp job working for Attorney Derek Langley.
Derek is known to be super grumpy. He can't keep an assistant to save his life. He is a difficult man and I loved reading about him. Tension pours off the pages. I laughed at his attitude and opinions. HIs childish ways put a smile on my face that would not let go. I was excited to see what would happen next.
He has met his match in Maya. She is good at her job and her confidence puts him in his place. There is just one problem, well, maybe not a problem. Their chemistry is off the charts. My ebook heated up. It was that hot. I read page after page enjoying the antics. It is not all smooth sailing for Derek and Maya but I was in for the ride.
The substitute is one of those books that I will read again and again. I can't wait to feel this wonderful again. For me, The Substitute was perfection.

Age gap and workplace romance are two of my favorite tropes, so I am always excited when I get a storyline that incorporates both of them. THE SUBSTITUTE is part of the SINGLE IN SEATTLE Series by Kristen Proby; while the author is not new to me, this series is. I was able to follow along with no problem, which is the way 1,001 Dark Nights / Blue Box Press has designed their novellas to be. It gives new readers an insight into an author's work to see if enjoy it, and it gives fans of the series a bonus couple to find their HEA, who most likely wouldn't have gotten a story otherwise.
The Substitute is set in the world of Kristen Proby’s Single in Seattle as Maya Sterling finds herself taking up a temping position for attorney Derek Langley, a man so difficult to work for he’s actually managed to work his way through the agency’s entire staff but somehow Maya manages to put up with his moods and tantrums. I adored these characters, there was an instant attraction between Derek and Maya as well as some seriously hot chemistry. You’ve got to love an English alpha hero especially when he loses it and starts cursing, but Maya was able to calm him down with a touch. As a character she wasn’t ambitious but knew what she wanted from life and that was exactly what Derek hadn’t realised he needed. With very little drama, The Substitute was a quick read and a case of instalove even if the hero and heroine didn’t realise it at the time.
For anyone looking to try a new author or series but unsure where to start I cannot recommend the 1,001 Dark Nights series strongly enough. They have never let me down at great detriment to both my TBR and my bank balance.
I'm a long-time Kristen Proby fan. It all started with her With Me In Seattle series sometime in 2012 with the first book, Come Away With Me. Since then, I’ve fallen in love with the Williams/Montgomery clan and those they adopt as family. I’ve said it many times before, and with this new release, it still holds true: None of her books have let me down to date.
The Substitute is a standalone title in the Single in Seattle series. I love ALL of her Seattle books, but unless you want a really long binge sesh, it’s not at all necessary to read any previous books to enjoy this novella. However, if you are in the market for a super-long series to binge, I highly recommend starting from the very beginning with this epic family.
This book is a pretty spicy read for a novella, so if that’s not your thing, you might want to skip this book. However, the storyline was totally worth it, to me, so maybe step out of your box and give this one a try. Like I said, I’m a long-time fan of Kristen Proby for a reason, so I don’t see that changing anytime soon!
The Substitute was a quick insta love fun read . I loved Maya and Derek. She was the perfect sunshine to his grumpy. Because Derek is the grumpiest grump ever . Oh , and he's a Brit . And he rocks Maya's world. But she works for him . While they work and learn things about each other the attraction between them grows and the tension is overwhelming. And they give in to it . Let me tell you Maya and Derek could overheat your Kindle because that chemistry between them is of the charts. They were perfect for each other. Loved the banter between them. Derek's opinions and attitude were hilarious. And Maya's sarcastic comments were so funny and on spot. When they finally have their first date and it was so perfect , I was melting . Grumpy Derek was so swoon worthy. And he made the right choice and that epilogue was so good. I loved seeing glimpses of the other couples in the Seattle series and that just added to the fun moments in the story.
Thanks to the author for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of this book.
I have been a big fan of the Single in Seattle series since it began. I love the tie-in with the With Me in Seattle series, and the introduction of the significant others. And that's how we were introduced to Maya.
Maya has recently moved to Seattle after having spent some time taking care of her ailing mother and then embarking on a trip through Europe. She wants to be closer to her siblings (who were a part of The Scandal and The Setup). When she arrives, she becomes the temporary assistant to Derek, a lawyer who cannot keep an assistant due to his grumpy persona. Their attraction is instant, and while they try to fight it (because Maya is a good assistant), it proves to be too much to overcome.
I loved these two. I loved that Maya softened Derek's tough exterior, and Derek allowed Maya to be and become exactly who she was meant to be. What a great addition to the Single in Seattle series!
Hot, sweet, funny, and a perfect short installment in the Seattle world. Kristen Proby doesn't even need a full length novel to suck you into the Montgomery world. Maya is Gray and Stella's sister. Picking up after a European sabbatical, desperately needed after being a one on one caregiver for their mom, Maya is making the move to Seattle now that Mama Sterling is doing better. She signs up for a temp agency while she gets settled and is pared up with Derek Langley. He's the hot, older, shark of a lawyer that can't keep a temp for more than a few days due to his exacting standards. Turns out, all he needs is a woman who isn't afraid to push back a little. These two will burn up the pages along with the sheets and gives us a perfect snippit to whet the Seattle whistle while we stay immersed in Montana with the Wilds series. It can be read as a stand alone but personally I think it's better in the context of the other cousins stories.
I loved being back in Seattle and seeing our friends again. I am excited to see Maya get her own story. I have to say Maya and Derek sizzled with chemistry from the moment she walked into his office. Derek, who can’t keep an assistant to save his life, finally met his match in Maya. Of course, once these two have a moment between them, they take a step back. I always love the ladies and the friendships between them and it was nice seeing Maya in the mix and sharing what is going on with Derek with them. Of course, Maya’s brother Grayson has to get all up in the situation and after he warns her off of Derek, he goes to see her at Derek’s office where she’s working and walks into a scene that sets him off. I’m glad that Maya and Grayson were able to talk and realize this is what she wants. These two are so meant to be together. I loved the ending of the book seeing a glimpse of what happened next and was beyond thrilled that Maya got everything her heart desired. Wonderful novella.
The Substitute by Kristen Proby is sizzlingly workplace romance novella that can easily entertain for a quick read. The chemistry between this pair was evident immediately.
This is book #5.5 in the Single in Seattle series, but it could easily be read as a standalone & a great introduction to this author’s work.
The Substityr is great for fans of… 🖤 Workplace Romance 🖤 Boss x Assistant 🖤 Forced Proximity
I always love the concentration on family in the midst of the romance stories. I love the showcasing of the big family all intertwined in each other’s lives. I also appreciate a grumpy & demanding boss that thaws as he falls for the unexpected loop of his life, his new assistant.
At this point, I will continue to read any & all of Kristen Proby’s work. & although this was short, I enjoyed this story & can’t wait for her series to continue!
Massive thanks to 1001 Dark Nights Press for the gifted copy, which I voluntarily read & reviewed.
One of my favorite things about Kristen Proby's writing is that most stories are interlinked somehow, so you already know these people. There is none of that weird chapter or 2 it takes to get into some stories. Kristen's writing pulls you in immediately.
The Substitute is a spicy, steamy story of Maya and Derek. Derek is a cranky Brit who can't seem to keep an assistant for long. He tends to send them running, usually crying. When he calls the Temp Agency, they warn him that Maya is his final candidate. Maya is exactly what Derek needs. She seems challenged by his gruff, sometimes rude behavior. She challenges him, rather than cowers when he snaps. Derek begins to take notice and eventually becomes attracted. But, he's her boss. Can this ever work? Or will Derek eventually scare Maya away?
My only complaint with this is that it's a quick read, when I wasn't ready to be done. Of course, that could be because I couldn't put it down. Great story.
This was a super fun, quick read and I can't wait to go back and read previous books that have these characters in them. This specific story follows Maya as she's back from her six month solo trip in Europe trying to find herself. She's been taking care of her parents and now she's wondering what she wants to do with her life. She takes on a temp job with the grumpiest of bosses. They are both smitten very quickly even though they know they shouldn't give in to their attraction.
Maya is full of sass and isn't taking any crap from Derek which only makes him more interested in her. I loved their HEA and the journey to finally admitting what they had with each other. For this being such a short story Kristen Proby did such a great job of bringing it all together so well and keeping me hooked on the story.
Thank you 1001 Dark Knights for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!!
Derek is the boss of a very successful law firm. The problem is, none of his assistants seem to want to work with him. His hard on them, he’s gruff, and he has an overall bad attitude. When the staffing agency sends over Maya, he has no idea what he’s in for!
Maya, for her part, is a pretty easy-going person, from a well off family, and she doesn’t put up with his attitude - she just takes it in stride. She also can’t deny that there’s an attraction to her boss that she doesn’t want to admit to!
After losing the battle against giving into their attraction to each other, they have a quickly in the office, they have a huge fight, and why she agrees to keep working for him for the next 30 days, she puts distance between them.
Find out what happens after in this super cute novella! I absolutely loved it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was excited to back in my favourite city, Seattle and this fun, quick read was everything I expected and so much more. This is Maya Sterling and her grumpy hot British boss Derek’s story. Maya is back in Seattle after spending six months in Europe after looking after her parents it’s time for her to work out what to do with her life. Taking a temp job seems like the first step and from the moment she meets her boss sparks fly…….. The chemistry is hot, the attraction is instant but will they cross the line, one click this little gem to find out. This quick read ticked all my boxes, I swooned, I smiled and I fell hard for this couple. Loved being back in Seattle and can’t wait for what’s to come.
This novella with an office romance was just what I needed to escape into today. Yes, Derek is a sassy smart@$$, but Maya doesn't take any flack from him and stands her ground, all while trying to understand what makes him tick. There's plenty of heat to be found between them, but the bond they form over time is worth every up and down.
** Age Gap ** Grumpy x Sunshine ** Office Romance
I enjoyed seeing familiar faces and couples I love from previous books in the Single In Seattle series, but you don't need to read those first to enjoy The Substitute.
Kristen Proby is the queen of spice with witty banter, so I pre-order everything she writes without needing to see a summary first.
Wow! I absolutely loved this book. Amazing characters and wonderful plot. Very beautifully written and easy to read.
Derek Langley is a grumpy and irresistible British man. He is the boss of Maya Sterling. She came back from Europe, came to Seattle to follow her heart. Through the temp agency she found a job.
Derek is a grumpy boss who can’t keep employees for long. He doesn’t have the time to fix his attitude. But when Maya walks into his office their attraction is instantaneous. But they need to be professional. But it’s not working out. I loved their chemistry and passion. They were made for each other.
Overall I loved this book very much. If you’re looking for a boss/employee, forbidden, romance then you’re going to love it.
