Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of this book for an honest review.

I loved every bit of this book. The ideas of this book and new and different from other graphic novels I've read.

It follows Sofia a girl in the real world who only wants to feel the fresh air and surf and then it also follows her online persona who is trying to save the internet but can't remember who she is and what exactly is going on.

The graphics to this book were super vibrant and eye catching. I can't wait to read the next book to see what happens next.

This book highlights the importance of not always being on the internet because it can be an addiction. It also highlights the issues of haters, virus and other important issues we deal with everyday.

First at all, thanks to NetGalley and Europe Comics for give me this huge opportunity to read 'Sofia' by Davide Tosello ❤️

🌊Illustrations of this books are INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL. I love the artwork and it's the highlight of this story. It's a lovely graphic novel.

🌊The concept of the book is really interesting, it is the kind of stories that have a strong critical plot. This novel is important to share it with kids, they have to know about the addiction of internet. Sofia wants feel the ocean, the air... She wants feel everything, doesn't want to keep in a room for the rest of her life. Talks about haters, virus... Freedom. And the next book talks about filters too, for example.

🌊First part of the story is confusing, I didn't know what was going on. And what happend with Sofia isn't clear. I imagined it and I hope it will be explained in the next part. But it is a creative book with a sci-fi elements and it has a huge potential.

🌊Definitely, I'm going to read the second part because I'm intrigued with Sofia, Thea, Candy and Emo.

No i ta przepiękna grafika :3. Czekam na kolejny tom!

Sofia is a short and entertaining graphic novel about a girl named Sofia and her daily life, composed of friends, work, and surfing. The story also follows Sofia’s digital persona, who has no memory of her identity and must piece together the clues and find her purpose.

This book was unique and intriguing; filled with fresh characters and new ideas. It is fast-paced and the story alternates between the Real World and the Internet, where two different situations are unfolding.

The art was very colorful and well-done; it was probably the highlight of the book in my opinion.

I received this book as an arc via @netgalley. The story is written by Davide Tosello. Thanks for providing the arc!

I initially was attracted tot his book because of te beautiful cover and artwork. But when I read the story I was blown away by it. It is so well thought out and relatable. I really enjoyed reading this graphic novel and can’t wait to read and see more of it! Just look at those beautiful pieces of art!

After a sunny afternoon surfing the waves at Red Chair Beach Sofia heads home to work on an assignment she got but finds herself pulled in the digital world of the worldwide Internet. She travels through the Web and comes across certain characters that want to help her, warning her for people that actually don’t want to help them. In a world where everyone has a certain capacity to upload data, data gets removed regularly but so do the memories. How can Sofia make sure this won’t happen? Meanwhile her sister is working on her own assignment, without knowing each others assignment they might just cross paths. How will this unfold? The story sends strong messages about how to work with the Internet and it is really relatable. I also really liked the metaphore of surfing in this story.

I stumbled upon the first episode of Sofia on NetGalley and I was quite impressed with the artwork, themes, and character dynamics, but I felt it was missing something that would have made this graphic novel amazing.

No matter what, the artwork is just beautiful! Vibrant with colors, unique character designs, and just has this chill feel, real world or internet. I like the anime-esque art style, though it is read from left to right as a western comic. I also did like the surfing theme of the book, and those surfing sessions were a visual treat.

As for the story, I liked the overall message and theme about not being obsessed with the internet and things like that. However, I felt the story was fragmented, like we’re thrown into this whole conflict of an internet reset being a wave, and something about making sure everything was ready? Some of the terminology was a bit over the top and I couldn’t connect a lot of things together. It’s got the components of a sci-fi action/adventure for sure, with threatening villains and a group of rag tag heroes. I’m getting that is avatar Sofia has to surf some big internet wave in order to make the internet better or something like that and she has to stay away from the people that want to delete her. But I was unsure about the nature of the conflict, and even motivations were not revealed until the very end of the book. Also, IRL Sofia just exiting the story early didn’t help. While I understand it’s more of an episodic story and wasn’t going to have a full conclusion, it felt incomplete, like it stopped before we were able to get started.

Either way, if you’re looking for a fun comic with great artwork, check out Sofia and I will try to check out more of the series!

*I received a review copy from Europa Comics and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.*

Clean and fresh illustrations and an original story that I would have given 4 stars if it didn’t feel like it was cut in half. I don’t get why it ended in the middle of the adventure. I didn’t feel like this is worth the money.

We follow Sofia, a surfer who unplugged from the internet but left a virtual echo behind which she gave a consciousness.

We soon follow that virtual echo on an adventure with a monkey emoji, a virus and an algorithm who actually just look like a monkey, a guy and a girl. The internet is running out of space and they’re not only running from someone who is trying to delete Sofia’s virtual echo but every one of them searches for their own kind of freedom. And they’re going from island to island (I wonder if Goodreads lives on e-book island) to surf and get ready for when they find the big wave, which carries a huge amount of data. It can save the internet and set them free.

Too bad the story was cut off too soon, when I was getting into it. The beginning of the story was a bit confusing but it got clearer and less out-there, the more I read.

I didn’t download this graphic novel in time from NetGalley and I really wanted to read it so I decided to buy my own copy and review it anyway. Too bad we didn’t get more.

- Thank you to the author and the publisher for putting this title as a "read now" on NetGalley. -

This was so good?!

First of all let's talk about the art style that I adored and that color palette that is perfect for the topic of ocean and waves.
Second, the way the internet is used is so creative and pleasant to read. I love how the author used the various web terms to create people and places. The story is set part in the real world and part in the virtual world and it's so intriguing and captivating.
I read this first chapter in less than 30 minutes and I already can't wait to continue.
Hopefully Europe Comics will continue with the series once it goes forward because I'm very looking forward to it.

Another smart aspect of this read was the playlist created. Yes, you can listen to actual music while reading that specific chapter. There's a little cassette drawing with the name of the song chosen for that moment in the book and I loved it.

The only thing I wished was described better was the actual plot of why eveything is happening and how these two worlds were created in the first place, like what's the purpose of all this and why... but there will hopefully be more explanation of it in the next chapter.

Definitely a favorite of this last period!

I was drawn to this graphic novel thanks to the beautiful cover and I was so happy to see that the entire book is absolutely stunning.
The book is short and entertaining, I flew through it and was surprised to see it was already the end. The references to our own real world and internet were like easter eggs I was pleased to find. I was however a bit confused for quite a while as to what was going on and what was really going on with the sisters. Some of my questions were answered by the end, but I imagine some of them were kept for the following book. I’ll read the next one with pleasure.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this e-ARC.

Sofia is a graphic novel that takes place in a world where virtual space on the internet has suddenly become super limited. One girl, Sofia, has decided she would rather delete her social media presence and be present in real life, while her sister and her friends have decided that they would like to try to save the internet. They are waiting for a "big wave" to come, which would free up a ton of space on the internet. When Sofia tried to delete her social media presence, that part of her became sentient on the internet and is now trying to help some other social media beings find the "big wave".

Honestly I was quite confused as to what was going on. It seems like the real Sofia is helping create technology that will destroy the internet, but the virus she created looks like her sister. I'm not so sure how much either sister knows of what is going on. I also did not realize that this was going to be a series, so the graphic novel just ended suddenly with me not understanding the story. I personally wouldn't continue on with this series because I didn't really understand the plot. I think because it was so short, the author could have tried to finish the story in one book, or at least kept going until the reader was able to make more sense of what was happening.

However, I do have to say that the artwork is gorgeous. That was my favorite part of the novel, and I think the illustrator is very talented. 3/5 stars

Thank you NetGalley for an e-arc of this comic. I was intrigued by the dystopian story presented in the synopsis. The story does not disappoint on this. I will not mention much about the story because this is volume 1 and there are still confusing elements in terms of plot.

The world is what surprised me positively. The way the real world is connected with some virtual world on the Internet is very interesting. I liked how some of the characters are things like algorithms, viruses and emojis. This makes the story was more interesting.

The art is incredibly beautiful and it fits the story wonderfully. There are bright colours and captivating scenery. I think the artist did a wonderful job at presenting the world.

I am very curious for next volume and I highly recommend this one! Incredible!

After being provided this arc by NetGallery I was really looking forward to reading this graphic novel as the art style really caught my eye.
The story contrasts between Sofia and her sister in the real world and Sofia’s digital avatar navigating her way through the internet.
While the premise of a story about the fall of the internet, the plot became quickly unclear as many aspects such as background and actual direction for the story lacked. However, with further editions to “Sofia” I expect the story will become much more cohesive. At this point, there is very little information about anything.
While the story didn’t provide I absolutely love the art style, the character design and colour choices really popped out and was my favourite element of the novel.

---------------------

As soon as I saw the author of this comic, I knew I definitely wanted to read it!
After reading Blue nella Terra dei sogni series, I was really hoping for him to make something new.
And here too, reality intersects with another world, this time that of a digital world.
Many important themes are also brought up in this series, and the one I most appreciated in this volume is how the Haters were depicted and how the characters dealt with them.
Truly an important lesson that should be shown more!
I'm still a little confused about the background story, but I think it's the author's characteristic because even in Blue I couldn't understand half of what I was reading. You can understand only once the series is over ... and I'm sure it will happen here as well.
The drawings are obviously spectacular and the touch of inserting a playlist in the various scenes of the story also appears here, as in Blue. Too bad there are no QRcodes to be able to listen to them on the spot. Unfortunately I don't know any of those songs and I have no idea when reading what atmosphere they can give. It's the only flaw I find to his work. They should find a way to make the songs listenable on the fly.
It's probably a matter of copyright and usage of the music...

Anyway I'm already adoring it and I hope it arrives soon in Italy too!

Thanks thanks thanks Netgalley for letting me read this!

I was provided an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

SOFIA is a great graphic novel! I would definitely recommend if you're looking for something short and sweet, but still entertaining.

SOFIA is about a future in which there is the real world and the Internet. In the real world, people spend all their time online, but the Internet is slowly breaking down, and soon, will not be able to support enough people. One girl, Sofia, before signing off of the Internet for good, created an avatar of herself with a consciousness.

Meanwhile, in the Internet, the Avatar Sofia wanders around, unsure of who she is or what she is supposed to do. But she meets a few people who save her from malicious beings that are looking to delete her. It is then that she learns about the Wave. The more Waves she surfs, the more she understands about her universe, and what she is supposed to do.

The concept overall is really interesting. I loved how there were Internet themed islands (Ebook Island was my favorite of course, but Hater Island was pretty funny!). I'm also just really intrigued to figure out what's going to happen next: this is the first graphic novel in a series, and I feel like I have pieces of the picture, but I can't quite put it together yet. It's definitely something that will keep readers guessing!

I also love the art style. The way the author draws water, in particular, is absolutely beautiful! It feels realistic, but still has that cartoon-feel that you love in a graphic novel. The author also does a great job of conveying emotion through the characters' eyes and facial expressions.

You could definitely argue that it's a little on the nose with its message (about how the internet/social media takes over our lives, etc.), but I didn't necessarily mind that too much. I mean, they’re literally catching waves (aka, surfing) the internet, so if it bothered me that much, I wouldn’t like the entire premise. However, if the obvious message/puns aren’t really your thing, then this probably isn’t for you.

That said, I would highly recommend this novel! It’s not super long, so it’s something that you can fit in easily in your busy everyday life. It’s intriguing, entertaining, and visually beautiful!

This book is an insult to the way the internet works.
(this is a cheesy title, but not as cheesy as the book itself)

Pro: The art is good

Cons:
- There is a clear lack of diverse representation. Everyone is thin and white. It feels like a book from the early 2000s.
- Who is the lead and the savior? a white man.
- The portrayal of sisters feels clichéd and outdated.
- The publisher's summary of the book doesn't even match the plot of book (never seen that before). Sofia is not propelled into the digital world, we just follow her avatar made out of all her digital data, which is vastly different.
- Speaking of plot, *face-palm*, it makes no sense that suddenly there is no more space on the internet. Connect another computer to the internet, and voilà, you have more space on the internet. And it makes even less sense that people would be limited to a life-time 30GB of data (we use this amount so quickly).
- Even if I try to imagine a sci-fi scenario where the internet would be limited and the data restricted, the author doesn't grasp what the internet is and the plot falls flat.
- And that's not all! The book is short, but the narration is very confusing. I would have expected it to be a standalone with an actual resolution. Instead, the book ends on a cliffhanger with most of the plot and the characters' background unexplained. That was odd.
- And then there are the masks haters, the malevolent shop owner, and the rescuers with '68 vibes, all coming across as gauche, cheesy, and heavy-handed. The overarching message is that "Spending time on the internet is bad, being in nature is good". I would have appreciated some nuance here.

Overall, I do not recommend this book, particularly if you only read the first volume. It lacks structure and coherence, and the theme failed to capture my interest.

Thank you Netgalley and Europe Comics for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Netgalley review, possible plot points mentioned below.

I'm stuck between a 3.5 and a 4 for this graphic novel only because of the beginning of it. The first half of the book was a bit abrupt and confusing, even after finishing it I'm a little lost on what was real and what was digital. Seeing Sofia and Thea in the same room is where it really felt tangled, especially if Sofia is being deleted does that mean she is just memories of someone whos dead or is she still real since she can still interact with Thea and her friends in what looked like the real world? The end feels like it's opening it up to becoming a series which I hope will wrinkle out some of the beginning confusions.

The second half is very good. Once the crew picked up Sofia in the digital world, I was so hooked. I already adore Emo, Candy, and Viky. Candy is my definite favorite so far. I'm also very intrigued with Melissa. I love the character designs, especially with them being personification of viruses, emotes, and algorithm in a really fun way. I'm so disappointed in myself for not seeing emo and immediately realizing it was short for emoticon, I found out when Sofia did. Melissa has the coolest design so far and I'm excited to see more of her in following volumes to be made.

The art style in this novel is very different than a lot I've come across. It's got a very dreamy feeling while still have a glitchy digital feel to it that I really enjoyed. Ebook island was absolutely gorgeous and dreamy.

Overall I'm excited to read more, I'm intrigued by the digital destruction and personification in the digital world. I also think it's an interesting concept of running out of internet space and having to delete memories of those who have passed.

I thank the authors and netgalley for giving me the chance to read and review this book.

I want to thank NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of Sofia.

Sofia by Davide Tosello is a visual masterpiece with its stunning illustrations that captivated me from the very beginning. The artistic brilliance displayed throughout the book was a true delight to behold. Each page was a work of art, and it added a unique and enchanting dimension to the reading experience.

The concept of the book is intriguing, and I could sense that there was something deeper beneath the surface waiting to be unraveled. However, I must admit that I found myself a bit lost, unsure of the direction the story was taking or what the characters were trying to achieve. This lack of clarity slightly impacted my overall enjoyment, which is why I have to give it a lower rating.

Nonetheless, despite my occasional confusion, I still found myself enjoying Sofia. It possessed an ethereal charm that kept me turning the pages, drawn in by the magical world that unfolded before my eyes.

One aspect of the book that struck a chord with me was its subtle yet powerful message about the dangers of being overly reliant on the internet and digital devices. Through Sofia's journey, we are reminded of the importance of living in the present moment and connecting with the world around us. It serves as a gentle wake-up call to put down our screens and immerse ourselves in the real experiences that life has to offer.

Sofia, after surfing, works on a computer program and finds herself in a strange world populated by internet creatures. Has she successfully projecting herself into cyberspace?

✨ Although the reader was life in the dark for a while as to why getting Sofia's avatar was so important, things weren't confusing. There was a nice buildup while keeping things on the hush, hush until the end. And there was also enough that happened to keep the reader intrigued until finding out the real reason.

✨ It was nice because when scenes took place in the real world, we know Sofia's thoughts, which I don't often see in graphic novels. That first-person POV wasn't stripped away, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

✨ The characters have a lot of personality! With graphic novels being heavy on dialogue, you have to make each character sound unique mostly by the way they talk. Tosello did this wonderfully!

✨ The cliffhanger! When I saw that the book was only 97 pages, I wasn't expecting a cliffhanger, but it was a good one. I am even more hooked and desperate to get the second book!

I enjoyed this graphic novel more than I was expecting! The graphics were full of color, the story was intriguing, and most importantly, I need book two! Everything was so well done, and I would definitely read this again.

*Although I received an e-ARC copy, I was not asked to give a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
