In 2006, life was grand for Susan and her family. She and her husband had recently moved from Idaho to Texas. They had been exploring the new culture of living in the Dallas area. She had joined a book club, made new 'horse friends' and was enjoying the next chapter in her life. On October 1, all of her bliss changed in an instant. The day before, she'd had a wonderful day of riding. Her magnificent horse, Race, was doing lead changes on every other stride. He was perfect that day, up the arena and back down. The next morning, Susan found Race behind the barn, sick, feverish and lethargic. An anxious call to her Veterinarian and an hour trailer ride to the emergency clinic brought a glimmer of hope. But, at the end of the day, Race had died and Susan's perfect life had fallen apart. This book came into being as a form of therapy to deal with the loss of her beloved horse. As she remembered her life with him, memories from all of her amazing horses came flooding back. These are their stories.
This is a delightful read. The author's craft Susan Acree exhibits in her memoir brings the reader up close to a front row seat for an enjoyable insight to not only horses but friendships, family, and life lessons. The reader will feel as if they were with Susan in her barn and pastures meeting each equine friend personally. It is an empowering book that personifies the human will to find and achieve their passion in life.
I got this free from goodreads first-reads. I enjoyed this book about the author and all the horses she had. Anyone who is an animal lover should read this. I did notice a problem with continuity in a few places. The author put some information in about her horse Race sooner than I felt was wise for an optimal read.
This is a wonderful book. I have horses of my own and also volunteer at a therapeutic riding center. Horses are a wonderful road to healing. Mine are my best friends. This story paints a nice picture of the love and bond between a human and their horse. Especially when they've built that special love and trust with each other. Some people don't understand this connection - "It's just a horse." Oh, but it's not. They're a piece you. This was an easy read. Yes, with some tears. A book that's hard to put down. Thank you for sharing this story. I felt each sting in my heart. But I also felt the joy and happiness too.
Susan's memoir is heartfelt, beautiful, and inspiring. We learn about the wonderful horses in her life that have changed the world around her - and as readers, we grow to love them too. I've never been around horses, but the tragedy, love, and power granted by these relationships made for an incredible read.
