The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn

Rate this book
Western North Carolina, 1787 ~ To escape a threatening stepfather and an unwanted marriage, Tamsen Littlejohn enlists the aid of Jesse Bird, a frontiersman she barely knows, to spirit her away from Morganton, North Carolina, west beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Trouble pursues, as the two men intent on seeing her recovered prove relentless in their hunt. Trouble awaits in the form of a divided frontier community. Across the mountains the State of Franklin has been declared, yet many settlers remain loyal to North Carolina. Chaos reigns, thwarting Tamsen and Jesse’s hastily cobbled plan to keep her safe.

With her pursuers ever nearing, the region in turmoil, neighbors grown suspicious of her presence, Tamsen’s safety is soon put in greater jeopardy. Gaining the freedom she longs for will mean running yet again, to the most unlikely refuge imaginable—the Cherokees, a people balanced on the knife edge of war.

But the biggest complication may prove to be Tamsen’s growing bond with her knight in greasy buckskins, Jesse Bird. Falling in love was never part of the plan.

Hi Readers!

I'm often asked in interviews what inspired me to write The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn. I decided to post that answer for you here.

Inspiration for The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn came straight out of the pages of history. While researching material for an earlier novel set in 18th century North Carolina, I came across mention of the “Lost” State of Franklin—an attempt of the citizens of western North Carolina to break away and form a separate state. Had they succeeded (and they nearly did) Franklin would have been the fourteenth state admitted into the Union, instead of Vermont.

This first post-Revolutionary War attempt at independent statehood spanned a relatively short (1784—1789) but tumultuous period marked by courthouse raids, fisticuffs, siege, and battle. For a little over four years the people of the Tennessee Valley region lived under the jurisdiction of two governments vying for the same territory, the allegiance of the same settlers.

My first reaction upon reading these sparse facts was... WHAT??? How have I never heard of this before? My second reaction was... How could such a situation result in anything but chaos—and a setting that begged for a story to be woven through it?

So, I wove one. :) And into it came some of the themes that visit me most often when it comes to telling stories: father/son issues; identity (the loss of, discovery of, redefining of); the challenges of walking a middle ground between two cultures.

The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn, set in 1787 North Carolina, is a story about identity, and what happens when that particular rug is pulled out from under a person. That’s already happened to frontiersman Jesse Bird, who doesn’t remember his parents or where he comes from. It happens to Tamsen Littlejohn when she discovers the family history she thought she knew isn’t even half the story. Thrown together in a moment of crises, Tamsen and Jesse flee across the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of safety, pursued by those intent on dragging them back.

They run from danger into turmoil: the overmountain Watauga settlement is in conflict over its collective identity—is it still part of North Carolina, or the newly proclaimed State of Franklin? Depends on who you ask, and you better be careful who you do ask.

Along the way, Tamsen learns she has more say in the matter of who she is, and who she will become, than she ever imagined before meeting Jesse. But none of these issues of identity will be resolved without Tamsen and Jesse facing great sacrifice and risk.

I hope you enjoy the book!

When I read the title, I automatically thought it was a romantic pursuit. But no...Tamsen is fleeing from the man she refuses to marry and from her stepfather, who knows she is the only witness to his murder of her mother. Jesse Bird, a white man who was raised by Indians and has no clue who his parents were, is her only ally, and helps her flee Overmountain into the frontier (future Tennessee). Her only friends are his friends, and it will be their good hearts that do it if she can possibly hope to escape permanently. Because Ambrose and Parrish are coming for her...

Definitely more of a thriller than most historical fiction is. I really enjoyed it!

The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn, simply put, is a story that I adored. I have a new favorite author and a new read on the favorite list!

Having not read Lori Benton’s first book, I had no idea what to expect – would the plot be unrealistic, the romance cheesy, the historical details overlooked? No, no and no! We meet Tamsen at a moment that she feels trapped by her future, in a bleak moment when her step-father holds all the control in regards to not only her future, but also the well-being of her mother. When she is forced to escape, a harrowing journey ensues, a journey that brings the help of Jesse Bird, an Overmountain man.

The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn had everything that I look for in romantic historical fiction – the setting and time-period were described so well, the dialogue was genuine and rang true to the characters and setting and the romance was near perfect. It’s not often that I compare a male lead to one of the caliber of a Laura Frantz novel, but Jesse Bird is definitely in that ranking. Thus far, he is my favorite of the year.

I loved Tamsen and Jesse, and especially had a soft spot for Cade, the man that adopted Jesse after his family was killed in during a raid on their farm. There were many layers to the story that added to its depth. Constant was the fear of being caught by Tamsen’s stepfather and her almost-betrothed, and the mystery of Jesse Bird’s heritage and at times, Tamsen’s, provided a puzzle that begged for solving. Top off this high risk situation with some romantic tension, and you've got one exquisite story.

I couldn’t put this book down. It touches on a time period that is often overlooked in historical fiction – a time when America was a wilder, perhaps more majestic place – and to be crafted so well in word and character just solidified my love of the story.

I’m so happy that I already own Burning Sky – you can bet that it is at the top of my summer reading pile!

Okay. I admit it. I am a super jaded reader. It takes a creative plot, larger than life characters, and some sweet turns of phrases to even slightly tickle my reader bone. THE PURSUIT OF TAMSEN LITTLEJOHN not only meets those requirements, it rockets right to the top of my favorite reads list.

And Lori Benton is one of my new favorite authors. I don't have many faves, folks, so this is quite the feat indeed.

So, let's get down to the nitty grittiness of why the heck I'm making such wild claims. I suppose it mostly boils down to how thoroughly the hero, Jessie Bird, stole my heart right along with the heroines. He is seriously "da man." What red-blooded woman wouldn't swoon for a fella who looks out for her safety, is gentle yet tough enough to fight off enemies even when he's shot and bleeding, and sports a serious six-pack beneath his shirt. Whew. Is it hot in here?

Okay, so besides my obvious man crush, let's talk plot. There are some great twists and turns in this one. In fact, you don't find out some very important information until near the end of the book. Don't panic. No spoilers here. Just know that you're in for a real treat of a surprise.

I also love the history lesson woven throughout the story. No dry textbook dates and names, just plenty of true action.

I picked up this title because of the recommendation of a friend. So here I am, friends, passing that recommendation along. This is a keeper. Now then, I'm off to buy every last other title of Lori Benton's even if it makes my credit card smoke.

I had the privilege of reading this for endorsement. Fabulous Book. Here's what I said:
Reminiscent of the Last of the Mohicans, and equally as stirring, In Pursuit of Tamsen LittleJohn is a rare book that kept me up late into the night. Ms. Benton is an exquisite story teller whose majestic descriptions, suspenseful plot, and passionate romance are not soon to be forgotten.

This novel is a historical romance masterpiece 😭. This is one of those books with characters so real they stay with you & you just want more of them. Since reading Benton’s debut I expected great historical detail (which I got!) but oh baby, I was pleasantly surprised that it was so romantic😍😍 (which ya know, is my fave).

There are lot of reasons why this book is outstanding & the rounded characters is one of them. Jesse Bird.. be still my heart ❤️ I love his manly & protective yet gentle spirit. I adored that he loved her basically at first sight & would do anything for her. He did a whole lot of yearning & was so patient with her. I about floated off of planet earth when he told her that he rather eat her cornmush for every meal than other foods cooked by someone else. I love Tamsen’s character too💕 I love that she was feminine yet up to the task of becoming a frontier miss. Their love story was written so well it feels real. I like that it didn’t have unnecessary conflict.

There is great adventure & danger elements to this book as well.

I could go on & on about how great this novel is. It’s a forever keeper on my shelf without a doubt; I have a feeling it will stay my favorite Lori Benton novel when it’s all said & done. ❤️

My expectations were very high after reading reviews for this book but they were not met.
I give it 2.8 stars. Almost 3 but not quite.
The beginning of the book started off very exciting. I was filled with anticipation, but towards the middle, it felt like it was dragging on and not delivering. When involving the main male character, Jesse, a lot of the scenes/dialogue seemed very juvenile/youthful (sweet as he was.) I also had a hard time with the development of Tamsen's love for Jesse...that actually seemed under-explained. She went from one extreme to the other.
I found the book to be written in a choppy/fragmented way at times. There was a lot of narration where the character would reflect on past circumstances/conversations and sometimes when the author would return to the present it would be a completely different scene! The changes were not explained; i.e., was in a room with people, character would reflect back to a memory, then return back to the present alone and in a different room...? If you read this book...do you remember the confusing ‘squirrel’ scene?? Throughout the book, I frequently had to go back to re-read and see if I had missed something. Overall, the plot of the story was good/interesting but the book could've been much shorter and I think Lori needs a better editor. To be honest. I skimmed the last quarter I was so frustrated with the odd/choppy writing.

Wow. This book definitely lives up to its rave reviews and exceeded my expectations! It has all the elements I love in a great historical novel- strong romance, fascinating history, suspense and anticipation throughout the book to keep the pace moving. I had not known about the lost state of Franklin and the early American politics surrounding it, and combined with the turbulent Native American dynamic, I was biting my nails! The characters are so vibrant- it was easy to envision each one. The author balanced out all the elements superbly and I didn't feel that any part of the novel was lacking. The ending was tied together beautifully and completely.

This was so well written. I was pulled into this story from the very first pages and did not want to put it down. The romance was not a huge part of the story but was there. That normally kills a book for me. This book had history and an adventure and very compelling characters. The end was a little too unbelievable but so well done that I couldn't even roll my eyes:)

A full pursuit, followed by a happy ending. I cannot fault the gorgeous book cover, the gentle, vibrant descriptions, the thoroughly thought out plotline, or how happy I am that I've read all this author's books save one!

I went into this book a little hesitant. I'm not really a fan of bad father tales, so perhaps my feelings on that made it harder to be pulled into this story. Tamsen was a little bratty, but she improves as hardships come her way and she must make many tough choices.

The pursuit begins, bringing in Jesse Bird's character and several other fascinating ones that play a factor into the pages and pages that follow. I truly enjoyed Cade's character and would have loved to see his POV. At times, there seemed little else going on save for passionate love at first sight and running away from a mad father and suitor. Now, truly, I love how this author creates a story, and because of that I never had the desire to set the book down. I just got a little bored with it.

Spiritual content was spot on, although slightly weaker than other of her books. The insta-love wasn't the worst I've read, but a few times I found it slightly eye-rolling worthy. Toward the end of the book there were several sexual innuendos that made me squirm and was slightly too much focused on.

The end brings a resolving, but I was slightly confused with all the ties, although after re-reading several times I managed to piece everything together. The past couple months have been crazy for me, so I will blame part of my confusion on a full, busy mind! I know many who love this book, and so for those who enjoy Laura Frantz or other books by Lori Benton, I would still highly recommend to give this one a try!

I'm not sure there are accurate words to describe what I think of this book. I was captivated right from the start, and it has lingered with me since finishing last night. I truly didn't want it to end!

The characters in this story were so well developed. I saw each person as portrayed through the eyes of the other character, and then came to see them as they truly were as the story progressed and they were forced to confront trials. The entire book was just so deep, and yet simple. Gripping, and yet gentle. Incredible, and yet realistic.

Going into this book I was afraid that the author would slip a "compromising" scene into the works. This era always seems to bend in that direction. There was a section of the book where two newlyweds found themselves thinking...well, like married people (go figure, ha!). I thought the results were tactfully handled, and after a bit the "honeymoon" ended and focus returned to life at large (as would be normal).

I simply can't describe how much I love this book! I will be getting Lori's other published work (Burning Sky) as soon as possible, and I hope to some day return and revisit Tamsen Littlejohn.

*Sigh* Just wonderful.

Wow! What an exciting journey this book took my on! Before reading The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn I'd never read any of Lori Benton's books, but had always heard great things about her work, and wanted to. I enjoyed this book so much, that I'm pretty much deeming it my favorite book that I've read this year so far, and I'm sure it will keep this place even after I've finished reading all the books I plan to read this year. I was completely blown away with the story, which exceeded my expectations for being a good book by such a great level! I'm so sorry I didn't find out about this author sooner!

I think one of the reasons why this book was such a favorite, was the combination of the wonderful writing style, well-thought out plot, as well as the characters that you can't help but fall in love with as you read about. This book was so amazing I'm fining it hard to adequately describe how much I loved it, and why I loved it so much. But I think I should start by saying that the writing style and plot, which was full of so many twists and turned and constantly kept me on the edge of my seat; just blew my mind with how amazing it was compared to my expectations! The plot was so original, and written in such a way that you were literally "there" with Jesse and Tamsen, running for their lives. You are actually there beside them as they are being thrust together in unlikely circumstances that test one's true character, which is only revealed in difficult situations (This particularly proved Jesse's character to be admirable, which I'll say more on in a bit). This story-line was so exhilarating that I literally couldn't put the book down, and I was in awe of the constant action and twists that kept me surprised with the plot and wanting to keep reading. There was never any dry spots, and was so fast paced and exciting that there was constant action and excitement throughout the almost 400 pages of the novel, which flew by faster than I thought they would.

Another thing I loved about this book was the bits of history that were woven into the story. Aside from it being a masterfully plotted fictional story, there were parts that were based on actual historical events. I always enjoy getting a "history lesson", if you will, in my novels so I found this to be very much to my liking. Plus it was neat getting to see what it was like for people who lived during this time period, and seeing how that affected how they lived. Especially in Jesse and Tamsen's case where they were constantly on the run and in several awkward situations at times.

And then we come to the characters. Oh my goodness! Let me just say this: Lori Benton has crafted such love-able and no-desirable characters, that I doubt I'll forget these dear friends (and enemies!) anytime soon. I just fell in love with each of the good characters, and felt a deep distaste towards the bad ones. I saw such great character development throughout the story-especially with Tamsen who went from a wealthy girl living while constantly being waited on, who then lost everything and was on the constant run, living in the woods and fearing her father. The characters also were very love-able for me;especially Jesse and Tamsen. I felt such a connection with the characters and particularly love Jesse's character. He was such a gentleman who had a heart for the Lord and it showed through his actions when no one was looking. His character made me deeply admire him and I just loved how he treated Tamsen with respect and gentleness.

Overall I absolutely LOVED this novel and for sure declaring it a top favorite which I'd highly recommend! I'm eagerly awaiting more books by this author in the future, and was extremely impressed with this book. The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn will forever hold a spot of my bookshelf as a beloved story with beloved characters; which I will make time to re-read again and again.

The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn by Lori Benton

This book was quite a surprise to me.

First, I thought it was about a romantic pursuit... as if Tamsen was being romantically wooed by a man or two.

Couldn't have been more wrong. This was a hunt...as in it she's running, and several men are traveling hither and yon to catch and return her.

Second, the story is based in the very area I live. I glazed over names like Sycamore Shoals, Roan Mountain, Watauga, Jonesborough, and when it mentioned Nolichucky River and John Tipton, I knew it couldn't be anywhere else. These places are all around me, all within minutes. In fact, when I first moved to Tennessee, I lived in Jonesborough (mentioned as the capital at that time), 5 miles from my current home.

I learned quite a bit about my new state... For 5 or 6 years Northeast Tennessee was called the State of Franklin, an attempt to secede from North Carolina. In the story Tamsen, Jesse and Cade were inadvertently caught in an actual historical battle (about 7 miles from my home). Jesse and Cade were injured, taken to Tipton's home. I wonder now if Ms. Benton is from this area.

Timeframe: 1787
Location: North Carolina and State of Franklin, currently Northeast Tennessee
Main Characters:
Tamsen Littlejohn: Young woman escaping a certain wretched future
Jesse Bird: Tamsen's rescuer
Cade Bird: Pa to Jesse
Hezzekiah Parris: Tamsen's stepfather
Ambrose Kincaid: Wealthy rancher whom her stepfather planned for Tamsen to marry
Charlie Spencer: Trapper who helps in the pursuit

Synopsis:
I can't even imagine how to make this brief, because there was so much to this story and so detailed! For my own memory I've written more than you might want to read and hidden it as a spoiler 😬...

The arduous travels, harrowing adventures, snow storms, Indian friends, peace, then more pursuit, near captures, injuries, gunfights, the "box", and oh yes, I didn't mention romance...(whew, there's romance!) all make for a story you'll have difficulty putting down.

SO GOOD! Review to come- favorite book so far this year.

Two words: NEW FAVORITE!!

I absolutely loved this book. Lori has a lyrical writing style that sweeps you into another time and place in history. Her characters are layered and complex. Her themes are woven throughout the book and tell a powerful message. And the plot and setting are riveting. The story is constantly moving forward, which made me eager to turn the pages.

Raised to be a proper lady, Tamsen Littlejohn is the example of gentility. However, her stepfather forces her to obey his wishes for her future. In an act of courage, she escapes from her cruel stepfather when an opportunity to flee presents itself.

That opportunity comes in the form of Jesse Bird, a white man who was raised by the Shawnee. Jesse Bird is a man of integrity. He keeps his word and protects Tamsen from the life she is running from. As Tamsen Littlejohn and Jesse Bird run from their pursuers, they are faced with challenges that they could not have anticipated.

Lori threads her stories with so many tidbits that can easily be lost along the way. However, she has the uncanny ability to bring her story full circle, tying up all the loose ends, and leaving her readers satisfied with a story well told.

Lori’s writing reminds me of Laura Frantz, which is awesome, as I love both these authors! So, if you are a lover of frontier fiction, or have read Laura Frantz before, or just want to meet a new author that is fabulous, pick up this novel! I promise you won’t regret it!

I am on Lori Benton’s influencer team and received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

When I received The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn in the mail, I had no idea it would add depth to my character.

Tamsen Littlejohn “longed for the freedom to choose her own path”. In a courageous moment, she fled the life her harsh stepfather tried to force upon her. Enlisting the help of an Overmountain man, she trekked into the wilderness, leaving behind everything familiar, on a search for the freedom always held just beyond her grasp. Would she come to regret her first free choice? Or would her patience prove to be just the seed God intended to burst into bloom?

As Tamsen ventured beyond the people and places she knew well, I latched onto her hope, her perseverance. These things I thought I already had, but the world often tests the things I think I’ve learned. When that happens, the Lord shows me more about my character. He refines the character traits He’s burrowing deep into the core of who I am. In so doing, He’s preparing me for the life He’s laid out before me. Today, I hope for my turn to create a family. This day, I’ll persevere past any trials that pop up against that future.

Thankful describes me right now. Tamsen Littlejohn’s story helped me realize I had more patience than I thought I did. The author, Lori Benton, didn’t unravel the mysteries surrounding Tamsen’s journey until the very end. That is talent I appreciate in a novelist. That patience—waiting to find out what happened to the heroine of the story—I applied to other areas of my life this week, and it made for a happier, more easygoing me. Taking life as it comes is something I’ve struggled to learn over the years. The last several years I’ve done better, but I have a feeling it’s all going to look upward from here.

Thank you to Waterbrook Multnomah for the complimentary copy of The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn in exchange for this honest review.

This is the first book I’ve read by Lori Benton and it certainly won’t be my last. What a tale she wove in this historical romance—and wow, what massive research she must have done to tell it. I love it when an author introduces me to a slice of history unknown to me and Benton certainly did that in this novel. I had never heard of the State of Franklin and how it vied for permanent status back in the 1700s.

There is a little something for everyone in this book. History, mystery, adventure, romance, peril, and a plot that doesn’t stop. Now the question is which of Benton’s books will I read next? And when will I get to it? Darn my ever-growing and way-too-long to-read list! :)

An absolutely wonderful book; extraordinary historical research; rich, enduring characters, and a story line that just kept getting better! And the ending; nothing short of brilliant!

Loved at first sight by two men, Tamsen Littlejohn is pursued by many things; a would-be suitor, a vicious stepfather, a horrific memory, secrets from her past, and a variety of scurrilous characters. Along the way she was found . . . . . by the love of her life.

Leaving Morganton, North Carolina in the middle of the night on the back of a horse with a complete stranger, Tamsen fights through her unrelenting grief and suffocating fear to rely on Jesse Bird; a man of few words and unparalleled courage. In order to protect Jesse from unwarranted charges of kidnapping and worse, Tamsen decides that marriage will protect them both. Succumbing to the wise advice of a mountain minister, Tamsen and Jesse decide to delay their nuptials and wait out danger in Jesse's cabin deep in the mountains; one that he shares with his enigmatic "pa" named Cade. Giving Tamsen the time that she needs to sort out her feelings and become accustomed to a different way of life, Jesse, Cade, and their closet neighbors; the Allards, provide a measure of security. Until her past comes knocking on the door.

Forced to flee after Tamsen's location is compromised, chapters full of flight and danger fill the second half of this story; leading Tamsen and Jesse through snow-filled mountain passes and Indian encampments. Entangled in local politics and civil unrest, all of Tamsen's pursuers finally converge in one location; ending the long pursuit, and in some cases their lives. The secrets of two families are finally unraveled; and these fine characters discover that the truth does indeed set them free.

A spectacular five-star read!

I LOVED this book! I could hardly put it down and when I was forced to I spent the entire time either thinking about the story or imagining what might happen next.

I am a fan of historical fiction and have been for as long as I can remember, Laura Ingalls Wilder managed to hook me when I was about 5, and I also love history. Too often historical fiction differs so far from what the history books teach that I get a little frustrated. That did NOT happen with The Pursuit Of Tamsen Littlejohn at all, the story is well-written and catches the reader's attention without sacrificing any of the historical details. Lori Benton has done an amazing job weaving history and story in such a way that the reader does not see where one ends and the other begins. It is readily apparent that the author put in a lot of research and that she is a very talented writer.

I really can't say enough about this book. I loved the characters, the story, the history, and definitely the writing style.
Tamsen and Jesse are well developed, as are the secondary characters. I cared about them, what happened to them, and my emotions ran the gamut alongside theirs.
When I finished the book it was hard to say goodbye to them and I found myself wishing this would be a series and I would “see” them again. I will just have to console myself with reading Lori Benton's previous book, Burning Sky, and if it's anything like The Pursuit Of Tamsen Littlejohn I know I will enjoy it.

Lori Benton definitely has a new fan in me and I will be anxiously awaiting each future release.

(I received an ARC influencer copy of this book from the author in exchange for my review. All opinions are entirely my own)

Bravely defying her harsh stepfather and his plans for an arranged marriage, Tamsen Littlejohn enlists the help of a frontiersman, Jesse Bird, to guide her escape from Morganton, North Carolina. While dodging the pursuit of her stepfather and his selected wealthy suitor (who believes her kidnapped), Tamsen and Jesse cross a vast mountain wilderness, steeped with hidden dangers. Chaos and uncertainty reign over their plan for safety, protection and freedom, as they navigate conflicts with settlers, Native Americans and wildlife alike. In the face of these dangers, will Tamsen spend her promising future running from her confining past? Can faith and love help her to start anew?

The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn, by Lori Benton, is an engaging frontier tale, reminding me of Laura Frantz’s wonderful novels. Benton sets the story well, sprinkling just enough historical details to set the context, showing me a glimpse of North Carolina history I previously did not know. Against this backdrop, Benton’s fascinating characters encounter adventures and romance and surprises, drawing me page after page with the nearly constant motion of the plot. Definitely a page-turner with a satisfying ending, I would recommend this novel to anyone with an interest in historical fiction. The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn is a great read, and I know I’m looking forward to reading more from Lori Benton. I appreciate WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing for providing me with a copy of this novel to read and review honestly.

I swear this author has a time machine and travels back to the 18th century at will just so she can get all the details right. There isn't any other explanation for the rich, evocative text that creates the ambiance of another world. The scents, the sounds, the very feel of the air...I became immersed in the story from the very first page. What an incredibly rich, captivating read.

The time period is fascinating and not as popular in historical romance so that alone makes it a refreshing read. I'm beginning to appreciate the early colonists even more than the pioneers thanks to this author in particular.

There is an intricate balance in Benton's storytelling -- her distinctive voice blends faith, drama and humour into an enticing package that makes it hard to put down. A complex story, deep characterization and more than one startling plot surprise kept me eagerly turning pages.

And the romance -- oh my! Toe-curling, swoonworthy and heart palpitating! A definite must read for historical romance lovers.

3.5, subject to change.
I enjoyed this! I always love a good story set on the American frontier, especially when the setting is right in my backyard! I love the historical detail, and how the writing transports you back in time. Though the pace did slow down a tad after the fast-paced beginning, I did like getting to see a little more of frontier life through the eyes of Tamsen and Jesse, and how their relationship developed.
I did like the characters, though with so many side characters and different names I found it hard to keep track of who was who. At times I found the story hard to follow, especially toward the end, and I found myself rereading several passages because I got lost in where the story was at.
But besides that it is entertaining and held my interest the whole way through. I'm glad I finally got around to reading this. :)

Slow and boring

I'm not quite through reading but I'm taking one one many breaks. I don't usually take breaks and that's an indication of how slow this book is.

I believe this book is unnecessarily long and wordy, contributing to the slowness of this book.

The plot was good and the story sounded like it had a lot of potential but unfortunately it did not live up.

I must admit that I don't understand all of the 5 ratings on this book.

Saying all of this I would recommend the book to others as long as you realize before you start that it is very slow which causes it to be a bit boring.

Wow! Definitely 5 stars. I would have to say this has been one of the best books I've read this year. Mystery, romance, history and godly people finding their way through life. I really, really enjoyed this one and can't wait to read another by this author. I've put off finishing it because I never wanted it to end. Great writing and great story. ❤️

Another gripping historical that brought Native American ways to life by Lori Benton. I loved learning more about the historic state of Franklin, and the characters of Tamsen, Jesse Bird, and Cade were deep and rich. Realistic depiction of the dialect of the area. Can't wait for the next book!

Well... this was sometimes a 3 star and sometimes a 4. I just didn't think the author had a good flowing story. Things happened that were just very unbelievable. It was boring at times.

Another triumph by Lori Benton, now one of my favorite authors! Her faith-based historical fiction is enthralling and brings to life the days of the American frontier, about the time of the American Revolution.

Tamsen Littlejohn realizes that she is basically being auctioned off to bring money into the coffers of her cruel stepfather, but understands there is little she can do about it. Dressed in her finery, she is paraded before her intended, but their intimate dinner at the tavern is interrupted by his slave with news of another slave being mistreated. When he erupts in anger and strikes the slave, Tamsen sees his true character and refuses his suit. Her stepfather is furious and in his rage, strikes and kills her mother. In the confusion, Tamsen flees, intending to ride her horse to whatever freedom she can find. But instead, she is taken under the wing of a frontiersman who is persuaded to help her escape. Unfortunately, her stepfather gives out that Tamsen has been kidnapped by a man who also murdered her mother. Now he and her intended groom are hot on the trail of Tamsen and young Jesse Bird, fleeing through a wilderness peopled with hostile soldiers and Indians who may or may not be friendly.
