The Fall of the
The Weavers are a mystical race, created by the old Gods eons ago. They bestride the Shadow Worlds as Gods themselves, involving themselves in the politics and power of those Worlds. Now the Shadow Worlds are dying and Master Weavers are disappearing.
It falls to two sworn enemies to discover the truth of what is happening, but can they work together and ignore the passion that blazes between them? Can they move from enemies to friends, and maybe even more, when everything is aligned against them?
With only a small group of allies they can rely on, the two men find themselves facing a conspiracy that stretches back centuries and encompasses the whole of the Shadow Worlds, and the Weavers entire existence may be called into question.
A Brewing Storm by E.J. Sutter
Book One in the The Fall of the Weavers series.
If you enjoyed Reluctant Mateby Eden Cole and Silent Secrets by Lynn Hagen then this is absolutely perfect for you!
The Shadow Worlds are dying. Can two sworn enemies manage to get past their differences and ignore their burning attraction to each other long enough to save them?
Brandon is a Weaver, a member of an old, powerful race. His discovery that Master Weavers are disappearing, presumed murdered, is a shock. Even more so when he realises that the person responsible is not actually a person at all, but a Revenant, and worse, the creature also known as the Abomination.
Things are not quite how they seem, however.
Jaime is a Revenant, a creature born from death and designed to do his Master's bidding. He's been living in the shadows for years. Now, the Shadow Worlds are dying, Weavers are disappearing, and Jamie is no longer the only Revenant to survive their Master.
Can these two men ignore the hatred, and the passion, that burns between them, and work together to find out just what is happening to the Universe around them?
They must uncover age old secrets of the Weavers, and defeat enemies who are closer to them than they'd realised.

About the E.J Sutter hails from the North West of the UK, specifically Liverpool. She currently lives in the wilds of Lancashire with two cats and two extremely stupid dogs. She has been scribbling ever since she was a child when, at the tender age of 7, she had a poem published in a local anthology. This led to a life long hatred of poetry, as she was then expected to be able to write it! In fact, she wrote the poem in about five minutes, as she'd wasted the whole of the lesson talking, and wasn't allowed out at playtime until she'd finished it.
Stories, however, have been tumbling out of her brain for as long as she can remember, but she's only just got around to putting them down on her laptop.

Well, where do I start with this one?? It's taken me until now to think about what to say in my review, it's that good!! I read RJ Scott's review and thought that sounds like something I'd love to read, and boy did I ever!! 5 stars, and a huge shout out to RJ for her review!!
The author is a new name as far as I'm concerned, and is from Liverpool, home to my beloved Liverpool FC
....oh, and some group called The Beatles, no I'm only joking....loved the Beatles. And I have to say that RJ was entirely correct...the author's capability for world building is awesome, this is the first in a series I understand, and I can't wait for the next one!! I apologise for the length of my review, but the story is complicated until you get into it, and I can only hope I've done it justice.
The story is set in today's world but contains people called Weavers and Revenants. Weavers come from the Shadow Worlds, many lights years away and look to Earth as their Mother Planet, they 'occupy' people's bodies, can live for a helluva long time and are an old, powerful race; Revenants on the other hand are pretty much the slave race, and as the author says 'are creatures born from death and designed to do their Master's bidding'. Our story concerns two men...Brandon who is a Weaver, and a pretty powerful one at that although as yet, he doesn't quite realise how powerful he is, but is content to keep pissing his father off every chance he gets and bucking the trend by being gay, and Jamie, a Revenant, who is already quite old when our story starts, but seems to be something of a novelty in that he is still alive even though his Master died many years ago, in fact he thinks that he may be the only Revenant to have survived his Master....and that is down to the fact that his Master taught him how to survive, indeed encouraged him to live life (as he knew it) to it's fullest and was 'modified' by his Master to do great things in the future...to help bring down the current ruling council of Weavers and make their world a better place, his Master realising that the way Revenants were treated was not right, and also that at some stage in the future the Weavers would try to take over this World and rule it.
I'm not going to go into the story too much because that would be mean, and you should read it for yourselves because it's fabulous and most definitely worth it, but I will say that Jamie and Brandon are destined to be together, the sex is hot, Jamie is not the only Revenant to have survived his Master, and ruling members of the Weaver Council are being killed off at an alarming rate...well, alarming for the Weavers anyway, but who is doing the killing...the Weavers are quite content to place all the blame on Jamie?? Brandon is aware (because of his father's behaviour...ruling member of Council), that all is not well within the ranks of the Council, there are too many unexplained goings on, plots being exposed and secrets being kept, and he is determined to get to the bottom of things with Jamie's help, and a few of the other Revenants that seem to be living without their Masters....
Very highly recommended.
Addendum. I have added the shelf Paranormal, the publishers say it is Fantasy....we'll agree to disagree.
If you have read Weaveworld by Clive Barker then you will easily get into and understand this world and new series A Brewing Storm introduces us to. No it’s not the same concept, it’s not an adaptation of Weaveword. It simply relies in the same idea when it comes to the magic the characters wield. It doesn’t happen in the blink of an eye and it’s rather explained and compared with weaving. But let me start this differently, perhaps from the beginning.
The Shadow Worlds are vanishing. A dark storm cloud is falling onto them and leaving nothing in its wake. The Shadow Worlds – parallel worlds identical to our Earth – were once numerous, with the farthest World being the home of the Weavers. People that learned how to manipulate and weave the energies and create Spells, Ritual etc. Through their magic they could also manipulate the “walls”, for lack of better word, between the worlds and travel through and into the different Shadows of the Core World (our Earth). But now the dark storms are moving and every couple of hundred years they are swallowing another world. The numbers are falling and eventually there won’t be any place for the Weavers to be, but the Core World itself.
Through the thousands of years the Weavers move from world to world they started helping their hosts and making their life better using their magic. They never lost a war and their greatest ritual was that of Binding a Revenant. A Revenant is the Weavers greatest warrior, for they are dead people whose part of their soul was brought back and bound to their body and the Weaver’s will by magic, making said body stronger, faster, and simply more that it once was, while they obey completely to their Master’s will, as long as their master lives, but they go mindless “zombies” the moment their master dies and are therefore extinguished.
All except one, the best warrior of them all, the Abomination, the only one to live after his Master’s death and retain his awareness and his soul.
I am hooked with this new series. I am sold completely, I’m a slave to this author’s work and I literally cannot wait till the next book comes. I loved it, adored it and couldn’t believe it when it was over how fast I consumed this book. The backbone of the story is incredibly solid, it’s such a strong work and it can host so many installments, it makes a perfect ground for many, many books to come.
The beginning is somewhat slow, with a steady pace; slowly introducing you to the lore and the basics of the story, while in the meantime introduces you to our protagonists. Through flashbacks we get to know Jaime, the Revenant, who he was and what his life was like before he died, his new life as a Revenant and ultimately what his purpose is. We also get to know Brandon, a young weaver, somewhat naïve whose life changes in a matter of days when he discovers that everything he knew as facts had been carefully hidden lies, and that his people and mostly his father have been abusing and corrupting their spells and powers.
In a beautiful web of intrigue, romance, betrayals, use and abuse, and the sparks of lust and undeniable attraction this story grips you and takes you down in its magical core, letting you only to resurface when it’s over. Even then your brain refuses to let go, eagerly anticipating the follow up installment that ironically is called The Beginning, because even if this is the first book of the series, it’s only the introduction for what I suspect to be a great Saga.
What more can I say, I loved it and I recommend it wholeheartedly to all fantasy/alternate world fans, for it is an exquisite read.
EJ Sutter is not a new author to me. I have read some of her writing before. I was excited to see she had followed the path to being published. I wasn't wrong in knowing this would be awesome.
The hallmarks of EJ's writing is that it digs deep into character, and the world building is exceptional.
I read this *Super Novel* over four days... I don't know how many words it is but it is wonderful reading. I didn't want to put it down...
I fell in love with Jamie, I watched Brandon become more than he thought he could be... I love the Weavers, the Shadow Worlds, the Revenants... I wanted more.
I can't wait for book 2...
** There is a reader advisory on rape etc... this is a mention of what happened in the past and isn't what I would call especially graphic. Nor is it unecessary. So don't be put off by that...
The story was really great in so many ways. I really enjoyed it very much. It was exciting, an interesting world, enticing character, and a good plot. There was potential for lots of danger and intrique and peril. And then it ended on a damned cliffhanger. It's the only book attributed to the author in Goodreads it was published in 2013. Yeah, I'm not holding my breath, either.
There were a lot of flashbacks that just weren't very interesting. The text itself was giving as much information as was needed so really the memories were only to give a personal feel for Jamie's past. While I understand that, it just wasn't interesting or exciting and as the flashbacks were frequent, they often interrupted the action when I just wanted to read forward. While a certain amount of that builds suspense, it was too much and too often and I just found it frustrating.
Grammar was sometimes an issue where the text was trying to hard to be correct and got it wrong. Like, "...between he and his father." Ouch. The paragraphs were also really long which is particularly a problem when someone is reading on an e-reader. Sometimes a paragraph can take more than a screen's worth and that makes it difficult to read. Paragraph breaks exist for a reason.
There were some things I wasn't fond of like the fact that I know that the author needed to get to that place but I think something more was needed. I also didn't like how long it took for the MCs to meet each other. I think it was chapter 5 before they were face to face.
I had one really major concern and that is that Brandon thought he was using Jamie's "bind" to being a sex slave to manipulate Jamie in Jamie's best interest. That sounds like rape. I'm not sure though--it's iffy in this circumstance.
(A couple of quick comments: Why couldn't he lock the door behind him? Totally awesome that he ordered Super Mario Kart with his health supplies. Also, turn of the century house now means around 2000, 2001.)
There isn't an HEA not even an HFN, just the knowledge they probably love each other but one thinks it's a fabricated love. I'm so furious I could scream. First books should never ever be cliffhangers.
Was a 4.5 but cliffhanger took it down to a 2. I'll average and give it a 3.25.
I enjoyed the characters and world building in this novel. It ends rather abruptly, there is obviously a book two in progress somewhere. The protagonists reminded me of a J2 pairing.
It's good, except for some moments when the phrasings so obtuse. And then it's flat and dull and really obvious for a while before it goes back to the narrative.
I'm especially annoyed with the way the characters treated Jamie That aggravated me greatly.
I'm torn about it. On one hand, the premise is interesting and I kind of like the basis of the relationship dynamics. On the other, the way it actually pans out is rather weird and meh and rather discomforting.
So much of it almost, but not quite, works, and that makes it weird.
I knew this story is fine enough, but somehow I couldn't connect with the plot. I liked Jaime, but the he got seduce by Brandon, just didn't feel right. I won't say much about the unnatural attraction, between Jaime and Brandon, manly because it's a weak part of this story. Some parts in this storyline aren't explained enough in my humble opinion. I was dissatisfied with the ending, to plain.
A little bit of sci-fi, a little bit of fantasy and a lot of suspense combined with great characters and amazing writing. I hope the sequel won’t take long to be published. An author I’ll keep in my mind.
The plot was slow to start and the details bog the story down, but the romance subplot was well done and the emerging story is intriguing. Can't wait for the next one!
