Ron Roy has been writing books for children since 1974. He is the author of dozens of books, including the popular A to Z Mysteries®, Calendar Mysteries, and Capital Mysteries. When not working on a new book, Ron likes to teach tricks to his dog Pal, play poker with friends, travel, and read thrilling mystery books.
My 7 - year old has finished the entire set of the A to Z mysteries (including all the super editions). The super editions are lengthier and more satisfying. I started reading them because I wanted to find out how good these mysteries are and after I started, I finished the entire set myself. This will be a common review for all the books in the set (so please forgive me if you see this repeated under another book).
First of all, the mystery part of the book is fairly simple for an adult, but I can see how it can keep a kid engrossed. The characters are playful, around the same age as my kid now, so are very relatable. Yes, there are some characteristics which can be a little irritating, but they didn't really bother me too much as to take away from the stories. The other con is that these little kids are left unmonitored in many of their adventures (I am not a helicopter parent, but it felt a little strange, especially when they are out of the country altogether).
That being said, now what I loved about the stories -
1) Most of the stories are based in different cities, and sometimes different countries, so the travel perspective is amazing. We, as a family, love to travel and every time the kids in the books traveled somewhere it made the story more exciting to me (as well as my kid). My kid had comments on how they went to Key West and later Washington D.C "just like us".
2) There are strong characters of both genders, the villains are of different genders as well, so the stereotyping is considerably less (there was a female pilot in one of the books that stood out to me) and I love it that girls reading the books have some good role models. I would always like more female strong characters shown ofcourse :).
I'm sure my kids will be enjoying many more of the author's books in the future :)
We have loved the A to Z Mysteries series and have read them all. We love that Mr. Roy has written several extra "Super Edition" stories with the same characters. Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose feel like old friends to us.
This was a fun story that takes us to London, England to meet the queen. The mystery is pretty straightforward and a little bit predictable. Many of the events story aren't all that plausible, but it's still a fairly entertaining tale.
Our girls are really growing out of these stories, but we still enjoyed reading it together and it's fun to revisit with old, familiar characters.
For kids it's a 4. Personally, I would have never read this on my own but my Kindergartener just finished it and said it was SO good and I had to read it; how could I say no to that?! He read most of it again to me. He liked it that much! It was really cute. The Jack the Ripper stuff sort of freaked me out (especially for him to read that) but otherwise I thought it was well done. My son loved being a detective as he was reading it and figuring out who committed the crime. My older daughter listened to a lot of it too and my older son's friends came over while we were reading it and also listened in. I love how it empowers kids.
This was a great elementary school kid read. Actually, it was even a great adult read. I learned some things about the Royal Family and London. The kids and I loved looking for the clues of the letters and putting together the secret message. I liked being able to refer to the map of London at the beginning of the book. The mystery was also good and somewhat puzzling and suspenseful until the end of the book. However, it all made sense in retrospect.
This is a clever mystery for kids to solve, and even references a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, which provides the solution to the crime. In short, a strongly plotted, very entertaining entry in this series. Read our full review, here: http://www.mysteriousreviews.com/myst...
Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose are in England with Dink's father. While there they help solve the mystery of the Queen of England's stolen jewels. They also visited a wax museum, learned about Jack the Ripper, and met the Queen. We have been enjoying these books with the hidden letters in the pictures and deciphering the secret message.
Thieves have stolen the Queen of England's jewels! Luckily Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose of A-Z Mystery fame are in London to help solve the crime. They even get to meet the Queen herself. Writing and format feels repetitve and the mystery was ludicrous but the kids and details of London were fun.
I didn’t finish this book. This is an easy reader chapter book and I find that writing books for entertainment about terrible things that happened in history is desensitizing us as humans. Then on top of it, this book is for young children. The book is describing a part of history where a man killed a lot of women in England. The man was never caught and they called him Jack the Reaper. I’m not talking about sheltering children from real things that have happened; good or bad. I’m talking about having conversations, real conversations, of the devastating of events like this.
Fiction 3-6 I read this to my class as a read aloud and they absolutely loved it! The A-Z mysteries are really great for kids to explore their imagination. We read 2 chapters a day and it was just the right amount to unfold the story of Dink, Ruth Rose and Josh. Following the series, they have already requested to read the next letter, "D."
Awesome I gave this rating because your creative writing is the best . I liked Josh . Always eats . I hope you write more books . Cause I sincerely love them .
I love the A to Z book series. I enjoy how every book has a different mystery that the 3 children have to solve. Each book in the series is for a different letter in the alphabet. This book is for letter C so it took place involving a castle.
I was obsessed with Ron Roy books a few years ago, even though I know I'm a little old (12). I thought the rest of the super edition books were well done especially Detective Camp. However I didn't even consider this book as a mystery book! After the first one or two chapters I had already solved the entire mystery! I knew how the thief did the whole crime, and the clueless kids had NO idea!!! The police are like "you guys are so smart!" but I mean how in the world did they not find the jewels??? As soon as they went to the wax museum I was like I bet the jewels are hidden on the statue, and the kids were like "oh, the jewels are with the rest of the jewels in the costume room." I know the kids are younger than me, but I think they're supposed to be around 9 or 10 and I could of solved that just as easy if i was 9 or 10 as I can now. The overall idea for this book was good, they go to England, the queen's jewels have been stollen, the thief hides them in a wax museum. I kinda get how the police didn't figure it out but i mean given all those clues Dink Josh and Ruth Rose still don't figure it out! When they were little in the original A-Z mysteries they solved crimes faster than this. The other thing is they are 9 year old kids in a foreign country with one of their dads, and he is the worst parent ever!!! He lets them wander around London all day while he's at work. It's so unrealistic! A dad would never let his son and his son's two friends walk the streets of London alone. Also they would NEVER meet the queen of England!!!! Why was the queen just walking around with no guards?? That's why her jewels got stollen, the security is so bad. I will keep reading these books just cause they bring me back to when I was younger. I always feel like I have to finish a series. But I definitely think this was the worst book in the series.

Eleanor says: I liked when Momma read the speaking parts with a British accent. My favorite part was when the bad guy tripped, so then they caught the bad guy.
Momma says: of course this is for kids, but come on! QEII wouldn’t be driving herself anywhere. The mystery was solid and there were lots of good clues. Eleanor and I figured it out and it was a fun mystery despite all of the real-world inaccuracies that were unbelievable.
My son and I are hooked on these books!! We had so much fun reading this book and are going back to the first one to read the whole series. The clues and realistic people and places that the author adds make it a wonderful story and one that I wish I was a part of. Definitely recommend this series as bedtime stories with early elementary aged kids or early read alone books.
