School is back in session. History grad James Sheridan thinks his biggest problem in life is trying to find a suitable outfit for his upcoming Ph.D. candidacy exam. That is, until he accidentally texts a changing-room selfie meant for his fashionable sister to his ex, the domineering Professor Carson. James and Carson haven’t seen each since James fled their power games two years ago. Back in his undergrad days, Carson was his Professor, and not just in the academic a man of unusual tastes and extreme sexual demands, James had been happy to sate Carson’s savage appetites. Too happy, in fact. He never could trust himself not to let Carson push too far. Now James is older and wiser, and sharing some seriously flirtatious vibes with a cute menswear rep. When Carson replies to James’s errant text, ready to pick up where they left off, James can’t help being drawn back into Carson’s control. It’s only when Carson suggests involving the salesman that James has to ask himself how far is too far, and whether he’s willing to go there with Carson again.

Heidi Belleau and Amelia Gormley delivered some kinky changing room fun with a droolworthy texting Dom who certainly pushed all my buttons… I loved this and can’t wait for more!!

I am already a huge fan of Heidi Belleau and I was interested to see how the dynamics would work with an author I was unfamiliar with… well, I needn't have worried. This is the first book in a series and I have to say, it has great potential and I am excited to see where they will take us next, especially if like me you are into the kinkier side of m/m romance, I must say, before I realised it was a series and I got to the end I did think… What! …Where’s the rest??? …flipping to the end hoping to find more! Now I know this is a series, I am all kinds of happy and I am actually quite astonished that Heidi and Amelia could keep our attention for 45 pages when the whole novella was played out in a men’s changing room ..but believe me they did! This was a fun read and I cannot wait to meet the enigmatic Carson… OMG, he managed to influence his power and charm even via text message, HOLY HOTNESS… I certainly need more of The Professor!

James Sheridan is out of touch with life, so when his sister bails on a shopping trip to find an outfit for a presentation… he is clueless! Luckily for him he has the very attentive shop assistant, Satish on hand for advice, however when he inadvertently sends a picture of himself to the man he hadn't seen for two years instead of his poorly Sister, he feels both sick and elated when he gets a reply! James had decided enough was enough and had finished the relationship with the man who had been his Professor, Mentor and Master, but Carson had turned his life around just when he had needed it,  and in more ways than one, it was something he would forever be grateful for. He had given him discipline and helped him focus… and the need to please The Professor had given him the confidence that had helped him succeed… something that had been missing from his life ever since. Now he was self conscious and anxious of the unknown and maybe he still needed Carson, but this time on his own terms!

The relationship and where they go from here is going to be interesting, James had ended it because he felt he was being pushed too hard and too fast and the issues which transpired were really due to lack of communication… but mostly, it was James perception of himself and his need to please his Master which was compelling and all consuming, resulting in his inability to say no or even safe word… which his mind perceived as failure…. so in reality he had set his own boundaries, but had not discussed it with Carson!

I loved how James’s whole head space and attitude changed with Carson…. via text message he manipulated and pushed James in a  clever mind game involving a very hot salesmen and some inventive play in a changing room. At the moment I feel like I have a lot of questions and I can’t wait to watch all the answers unfold… Carson has me drooling already so his character definitely needs more page time as far as I’m concerned! I absolutely loved this short, but more for the promise it holds and if it continues along the same vein of hot sex with an undercurrent of humour I can see it being a favourite of mine. Bravo ladies… and an excellent start to a series, please don’t make me wait too long for the next one!!!

Whew!! Is it hot in here or is it just me??? Heidi Belleau and Amelia C. Gormely turned up the heat with this one!

This book was about mind games, pure and simple. It is about the struggle between maintaining control vs the desire to submit to another person, fully and completely. I found it to be incredibly erotic.

I happen to be in the camp that believes that reading dirty talking is hotter than reading actual sex on page. In this case, it was dirty text messages but it accomplished the same thing. Talking about what could happen or would happen was glasses-fogging, smoking hot erotica.

I'm super excited for this series and to read more by these authors. A great entry for my GayRomLit reading challenge and a fab novella!

3.7 Stars - cheeky, sexy and very funny

I got this one for free at some point (Thanks Anne!) and after an hard an depressing book was it time for something more light and easy. ...and I got exactly that.

This novella, Giving An Inch is the first part in a series, The Professor's Rule. These books are about the young history grad James Sheridan and the very naughty and dominant Professor Carson. The stories revolve around their smexy power games (..so far light D/s or BDSM).

Here in this first part is James in a fitting room at a men's store and got some inspiring and dirty text message from the Professor. At the same time, there was a very beautiful and sexy store clerk flirting with him. H@rny, excited and full of needs - anything can happen anywhere...

~**~**~**~**~**~**~

This quick read was really fun and yummy. I grinned cheerfully from the first to the last page. The day I've read my other hundred books (...it's true!!), will I certainly continue reading more of these filthy but light-hearted novellas.

Promising start. - A sexy 40-50 pages book well worth reading. This story also worked great as a standalone novel.

I LIKE - a giggle read

Yap!

Who's on the other end of the cell phone you ask?

Bossy and naughty former dom to our cute little twink, James, who he accidentally mis-texted and somehow found himself obeying his commands again. Naughty shenanigans in a changing room with a sexy sales assistant, what's not to like here?

All which makes me feel like this

Giving an Inch was surprisingly well written. Honestly, it had me at the Star Wars t-shirt followed shortly thereafter by the Robert the Bruce reference.

James and professor naughty are just rekindling their relationship and quite possibly establishing boundaries for the first time. Seems as though James allowed things to spiral out of control 2 years ago rather than speak up which led to their demise. However he seems determined not to allow that to happen again.

Should be a fun ride. On to An Inch at a Time.

Whew! This turned out to be quite a bit more erotic than I was expecting. Where did I get it into my head that this was going to be some sweet, innocent thing? Did I even check who the authors were? *smacks head Luckily for me, I liked the surprise, a lot, and man Heidi and Amelia make a seamless writing team. Btw, there is sweet and even tender here too, it's just wrapped up in a smoking hot scene.

THE CHARACTERS

James Sheridan - Grad student, sub, and he needs a suit. It seems he's in the right department.

Professor Carson - Dom by text? Well, why not? We haven't really even met him yet and I already want more.

Satish - Personal shopper extraordinaire!!!

So beautiful, my sweet. I know how hard it was for you to do that. Thank you.

And with those words, the shame was almost gone, washed away with pride and delight. He'd pleased the Professor. It never got old. It never faded. Not even when he wished and prayed it would.

THE STORY

A little shopping, a little alteration (or is that flirtation), an errant text and a private dressing room lead to a new chapter in James Sheridan's life. In the past his ex-Dom had all the control, but James has learned a few things about himself since leaving his Professor. Even if the Professor still has things James wants, James is determined to get what he needs.

THE WRITING

Really quick, snappy writing. These authors are on a roll.

I was surprised to see the level of attention given to explaining James' internal thought process. He has a lot to work through here. As the story begins we see James as a rather insecure, reserved college student. There is more depth to him than that however and I think it'll be interesting to see where his character goes.

As someone who's had a few thoughts on public exhibition (even dressing room fantasies) I did find parts of this scene to be just a tad over the edge of unbelievability. Still, it was hot and fun to read, so I'm not going to let that hold me back a bit. With the lingering potential of a threesome or something, I for one can't wait to read on.

*devious grin*

"Giving an Inch"...hmm what a great title. History Grad James Sheridan is inept when it comes to fashion. He needs an outfit to impress the Ph.D candidacy board and his t-shirt and ratty jeans aren't going to cut it. So he's lost in translation at a clothing store, getting flirtatious help from a hot shop assistant, tasked with taking selfies and sending to his sister who is much more fluent in clothes. He accidentally texts his ex of two years, the ever-so-dominant Professor Carson.

And does the hot, sexy, fun begin!

Just reading the snippets of the things James and Carson did in the past (kinksters will be happy - caning, voyeurism, exhibitionism, spanking to name a few), I wanted needed to know more. Plus there was a sense of lightness throughout the story that was enjoyable.

Why did James and Carson break up? The Dom was too demanding for James. James felt he was giving into his professor way too much. Unfortunately, we don't get to read about the break up in depth. But the taste that we do get, is satisfactory.

And the polite and hot shop assistant, Satish? Please keep him. (Kudos for having an Indian love interest, BTW!) He's adorable but I have trepidation for his future as he seems submissive and two subs just calls for a Dom to step in. Hmm, maybe a future triad? What's in store for the professor? What scenes and games will he create for James to participate in? The one he came up with at the clothing store? Delicious.

I was left salivating for more. This is a yummy, sexy series to watch. I need to know what the professor has up his sleeve. I'm sure it will be erotically devious and fun.

This is 45 pages of erotic, light, BDSM fun. I see endless possibilities for the future of these men, so ladies, get the writing!!

WTH?! There I was, totally caught up in the story, not paying a bit of attention to how many pages were left, salivating for the next chapter, and it just ENDED! I repeat, WTH?!

*runs off to get the next book*

ETA: I'm back, and pouting. The next book is a prequel. I want to read it, but it's not as urgent as a follow up with James and the professor and Satish. I HATE that. Get me all excited, and leave me HANGING. Ugh. It was like taking a bite of an incredibly decadent dessert just to have them pull the plate away before you could eat the rest.

So, I'll try to put some thoughts down about this story.

First, I'm drawn to BDSM stories for the D/s aspect. I like reading about the emotional and psychological effects of a scene, or the lifestyle in general, so watching James deal with his conflicting feelings of desire and fear was a treat. His incredible need to please his Dom battled with his need to respect his own limits. He hated the idea of disappointing the professor, but he also knew he had to make those limits clear and stand by them.

Then, on top of those dynamics, we get a super hot and sexy encounter with Satish who is adorable and who we need to see in another story. The sooner the better.

That is all.

*still irritated*

What is the saying? It's not the size that matters, it's what you do with it? That can be said for this book as well. Short on page numbers but not on steam or simple dominance via text message.

James Sheridan is shopping for a special outfit, one that will help propel his academic career. Solo in this trip as his sister stayed home sick he is approached by a salesman to assist him. Awkward James begins to try on clothes assisted by the dark and handsome Satish who he believes is flirting with him. His choices need to be approved by his sister (Poor James is hopeless with fashion) so he snaps a picture of himself in the dressing room to text to her but with the slip of a finger, the picture goes to his ex-lover and Dom Professor Carson.

For your approval, J.

Who's the pretty salesman, my sweet?

From that simple exchange our story begins to take off. I loved being privy to James and his thoughts. His inner struggle with what to do and where to go from here. His instant inclination to obey the professor even after years apart hit the right chord with me. The Professor? Loved him! They say you can't translate emotions via text but through each directive text message the professor sent was emotionally charged and when they ended with "my sweet?" Ugh. Kill me now why don't you? There is something about the endearments of a Dominant to their submissive that makes me shudder. In a good way of course.

Were they doing this? After two fucking years of no contact whatsoever? Were they really doing this again? If he did this, there'd be no going back. He was going to do anything Carson demanded of him. And it would be hot. No, not hot. Fucking incendiary. But the crash after. That was the rub, in Hamlet's words. How far would James let it go...

I have to say this was one steamy read. I was totally sneak reading it at my desk, absolutely flushed the entire time and hoping no one asked what I was reading because I would not have been able to form a complete sentence. My mind was firmly set in that changing room with James the entire time. I have to give kudos to the authors for delivering a read that sucked me in instantly, actually before I bought the book I was drooling over this. Well played, ladies. Well played.

Giving an Inch is a great introduction to this story line that I am very happy will be a series. I want to know where this will or won’t take James, Carson(and I hope!)Satish.

The whole thing had been absolutely mind-blowing…

Sizzling...

Well this changing room fetish usually does nothing for me, but James's interactions with both Satish and Carson were pretty hot. BUT, the bit that takes it up and over from just being a deliciously smutty piece is the exchanges between James and Carson and James "epiphany" as the short story progresses. Some hot D/s with a sub dealing with mild humiliation issues and fears.

Favorite quote:
"No matter what you gave Carson, he wanted more. More, more, more. Right at the end, James had begun to wonder if he was going to wind up like an orange squeezed to pulp."

Shopping is not my thing, so dressing rooms are not my happiest places on earth. But James and Satish’s sexy on your knees exploits may help change my mind about that! :D

James is shopping for interview clothes for his big PhD oral exam and next step in life. He picks up pants, vests, and a flirty salesman along the way. But an accidental text to his ex-Professor and ex-lover, Carson, really heats things up! Texts, photos, and commands fly back and forth. Every click, stroke, and suck fills that small dressing room with lust and need. Very hot!

Even after two years apart, James and Carson seamlessly pick up and continue their off the charts chemistry and power games. The power Carson held over James, over me, and over this story was dazzling! And he wasn’t even there! Not physically anyway. His kinky energy and power came through in every text. Each and every reply and message had me on the edge of my seat—waiting and wanting. The emotional swirl of obedience and need to defy was intoxicating.

I need more. Can James and the Professor really pick up where they left off? Will James learn his limits and lessons from the past? I haven’t even met the Professor yet and he has me so curious, so turned on, and so eager to learn.

”You don’t believe it’s beautiful, but it is. It’s beautiful for the pleasures it offers me. It’s beautiful because it’s mine to claim and use and admire.”

Off for more in...

I liked this!

First of all, this is so hot!!! Sex on a the dressing room with a hot salesman on the orders of your Dom? It's hot!!!

While the inner monologue of James can be irritating, I think I can understand it. Well, he and Carson and done, but he just can't get over their carnal relationship unfortunately. I don't hate it, but I don't love it.

A nice and hot short!

A short, sexy read that fell a little flat for me.

James is a hot mess when it comes to fashion. He needs something to wear to his upcoming Ph.D. candidacy exam, so his sister has agreed to help. She’s home sick today so Patrick goes shopping and plans to text her pictures of his various choices.

In the menswear department, he is assisted by a cute sales guy, Satish. After some harmless flirting James heads to the dressing room to try things on and send his sister some pics. Whoops! He accidentally sent the selfie to Professor Carson, a Dom he broke things off with 2 years ago.

The Professor texts back and James finds himself quickly falling back into old patterns. And this time The Professor wants to include Satish in their power game.

I love M/M and BDSM, but this one just didn’t work for me. It wasn’t that I didn’t like the storyline per se, it was just so short that I didn’t really get much out of it. Plus, the ending did not resolve anything. No HEA, No HFN. It just ended.

I will give the next book in this series a chance. Maybe it will change my mind :)

This was a nice, sexy read, with great depth given to all characters over 45 pages - I appreciate a short story that delivers so much. A seamless co-write here between Heidi Belleau and Amelia C Gormley. There was much to like, but also much to think about by the end of reading. Pretty hot writing - using the sale of menswear, a helpful salesman, an initial misplaced text, and the confines of a change room to develop some hot BDSM fare that left you looking for more about all primary characters - including the delish possibilities of what may come. This was short but oh, so hot!

All the action takes place in a department store change room as James ventures out for some clothes shopping. A mis-dial sees him messaging a photo to Carson, someone he had cut himself off from two years before, because "He couldn't trust himself not to jump off a cliff at Carson's say-so, maybe even jump off a cliff without Carson's say-so, but just because that was what James thought Carson wanted."

We only meet Carson on the phone as he directs James' actions, James being unable to resist the lure of submitting to him - the things that James will do for Carson! Things get down and dirty in that change room!

James struggles with his feelings and the urges he has, revealing elements of his past with Carson but never fully revealing all the details of their relationship. Things don't quite end up as expected, which led me to my assumption about book 2 An Inch at a Time. I expected the next story to continue from the point of James leaving the department story for his rendezvous with Carson. But guess what? An Inch At A Time is actually the story for the start of their relationship. I can hardly wait for it to be released!

The story may be short and all take place in one relatively quick scene but a lot is packed in, both in terms of characters and the sexual domination/submission. This is definitely a great start to the series.

Giving an Inch is a fun little romp and a great start for the planned series. It isn't meant to take itself too seriously, so if that is what you are after, this is not the book for you. It was, however, the perfect follow-up to the much more intense Flesh Cartel 6 (for which I always recommend having something happy and fun lined up to read afterwards).

James is a man caught between the past and the present. But can the past and the present collide? Well only time (and a few more shorts) can tell. What I can tell you is that Giving an Inch is a hot time that leaves you wanting more. When does book 2 come out?

Sue me, but I kinda loved that this story was essentially about a threesome (even if the one guy didn't know it was and the other was only a series of text messages). Also, I love me some student/teacher kink and a good power imbalance (though, perversely, I also appreciated James fighting back to establish some new ground rules between him and Dr. Carson), so this tasty little morsel was right up my alley.

A "Live Your Life, Buy The Book" Review

It is very difficult to say much in a review of such a short book, that hasn’t either been said in the blurb already or leaves absolutely nothing new for the reader to discover themselves – but what I can say is that I liked the story. A lot. It was very, very sexy! Phone sex always is – and when it is done with photos in the change room of a store it moves it up a whole ‘nother level :-)

James met Carson at a time in his life when he desperately needed to be controlled. Sexually Carson calls the shots, obviously, but this focus and direction also helps James enormously in his academic life too. Carson is very demanding and James is fully on board for anything and everything Carson tells him to do, and more! That’s the problem – James is unable to set boundaries, he will push himself to the extreme not only because Carson asks or expects but maybe even more because he wants to go that hard, that far, no limits!

When James sends a photo of himself to Carson by mistake, Carson is super quick to adopt the role of Director in the Seduction of Satish (the sales assistant). James falls quickly into playing his part… Except he finds he likes Satish. He wants to have a date, a future with him.. maybe. Is it possible to fit both of these relationships into his life? Can he play the games but implement some rules himself? In the 2 years away from Carson has James actually realised that he can see lines that should not be crossed?

I found I liked Carson more at the end then I thought I actually would. He may be a very hard Dom, but he seems secure enough to not force the issues. He sees and respects James’ boundaries that James is unable to do himself. He is interesting for sure, and I look forward to Book 2 – in the hope of seeing more of the Professor.

More than just a frisky controlled encounter in a men's fitting room, this is also a glimpse into James' psyche as he tries to clarify in his own mind what he's looking for in a relationship, and negotiate some different boundaries. It's a slow build up to one pretty hot blowjob, and Satish is a perfect foil to the anxious James.

Carson is portrayed in a sympathetic light - he appears to not be pushing or demanding, but I have my doubts about this professor, Am interested to read on.

What an enticing story to start a series. Giving an Inch slowly lures you into its depths and gives you no chance to escape the addiction.

James is a character that I really don’t know what to make of him. He has long broke up with his “Professor”, his pushy, demanding professor Carson, but not because Carson’s demands and want-more, but because James himself couldn’t stop from giving whatever Carson put on the table and then some. Yet an accident put Carson back in his life when he accidently sends him a picture of his attire and Carson grabs the opportunity to get his lovely sub back.

Still demanding, still ordering him around into things that James feels humiliating, but this time James is different. The game might be Carson’s but James is putting down rules of his own. This time James wants more.

And this character right here is addictive. We get to see a slight side of Carson and I can’t wait to properly meet him in future installments. We get to meet Satish, the salesman that gets involved into Carson’s little game, and I really do hope to see more of him in the future. But the main character that made me want to grab the authors and shake the next story out of them is James. Lovely James; needy James; defiant James. He might have come as weak at some point but, oh my, he did grow some spine there and took what he wanted from this wonderful, brilliant play.

Enticing? That is quite an understatement.

A lovely short story, one of those that you don’t want to say much about the plot out of fear of spoiling the fun, Giving an Inch will most certainly win you with a great writing, wonderful protagonist, a promising plot and one very erotic and sexy scene. Strongly recommended.

James ended his relationship with Carson, a former professor of his, because he didn't trust himself to set boundaries as to what lengths he would go to please the man. Although he recognizes that Carson helped him not only in getting his life under control but with his academic discipline as well, James is still afraid of how far he can be pushed. These struggles come back to him once he acknowledges Carson's response to his text and engages in a text conversation with Carson.

Oh my, never I have read such HOT text messages!

I loved how Amelia C. Gormley and Heidi Belleau went about setting up this encounter. It really gave James the opportunity to inform the reader about his past with Carson and gave insight into why he was having doubts that caused him to hesitate when Carson made demands.

Even though James did participate and complied with most of Carson's demands I was glad to see that he did set some boundaries and analyzed his responses before acting out Carson's demands. This showed that although he held a great deal of respect towards Carson and owed him a lot for all he'd done for him, James had indeed matured and was not going into this blind.

I am not even going to talk about what went on in that changing room, that is something that should be experienced by the reader first-hand. I'll just say that my shopping expeditions are seriously lacking!

Giving an Inch is a great first installment in The Professor's Rule series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The concept behind the story was interesting and the mix of sexting, humor, sexy man-love and a domineering Professor helped the collaboration between these two authors to go off without a glitch. I can't wait to read more.

I received this title from Riptide Publishing through NetGalley in exchange of my honest opinion.
