This book was my pre-teen years.
This book brings back so many memories.
I still hate Joanna.
I still love Dex.
Poor Shep.
It was poorly written.
With sentences like this.
But hey, I was a teenager when I read this...don't judge me.
And it will always hold a special place in my heart.

R.L. Stine's books can be hit or miss because he churns them out like butter. You can tell when he's dialing it in and when he's making a more concerted effort. Writing spoiled, borderline-sociopathic girls getting their comeuppance seems to be his strong point. There's Reva from the Silent Night trilogy and this book, THE BOYFRIEND, with Joanna.
Joanna is a rich, snobby New Englander who is basically a living, breathing stereotype. She's dating a boy from the wrong side of the tracks because he looks like Matt Dillon (lol) but she's getting bored of him. Now she's got her eye on Shep, another rich New Englander who comes from the same sort of stock as her and also has a brand new Jaguar.
Instead of straight up breaking up with him, she treats Dex like garbage, which results in a prank... that goes horribly wrong. Fatally wrong, one might say. Dex dies and instead of calling the police, Joanna runs away-- and promptly gets into a car wreck. When she wakes up, she hears the horrible news and her first thought is literally something like, "Yay, now I don't have to break up with him! I'm single again!" What a card.
But then-- Dex comes back.
This is one of Stine's better books. I thought the suspense was great and the writing was a cut above some of his other books. There were so many twists at the end, it kind of made my head spin a little, but ultimately I think I liked it. Joanna was just SO awful... it was kind of a relief not to feel sorry for her and just kick back and go along for the ride. Point Horror books are always way more intense if you actually like the character, which is why the Losing Christina series by Caroline B. Cooney still sends me on a rollercoaster of emotions to this day.
If you like Point Horror books, you'll enjoy this one. It's the perfect read for fall.

Joanne is told that her ex-boyfriend has died in an accident, but when she constantly sees him around town she starts to question if there’s some unfinished business between the pair.
A fun fast paced story, I’ve re-read quite a few of these Point Horrors now so the ending was quite obvious.
I like the way that Stine raised the stakes throughout.

It was kind of hard to figure out what I wanted to rate this book. I hated the main character, Joanna. She's was a rich snobby bitch and I wanted her to pay for the way she treated her boyfriend, Dex, but in the end I guess she did to a certain extent. Just not in the way I wanted. It was still a good read though.

Some of R.L. Stine's work for the Point Horror books were among his best. Although this wasn't one of his top ones, it's still memorable for the fact that Stine took a creative risk with having a deliberately unlikable lead character. Joanne is rich, snooty, mean to others and plays around with the feelings of her boyfriend. The rest of the plot, involving Dex dying and seemingly coming back from the dead, doesn't bear such close scrutiny. But it's great to witness a writer at their peak, taking narrative chances such as this. Most modern-day writers can't pull it off, but back in the early 90s, Stine could.

A girl, a dead boyfriend, revenge... sounds good right? But sadly this was a disappointment.
I was looking forward to reading a new Point Horror, or well, newish because I can vaguely remembering reading this in my teens. Translated in Dutch though. But this was just a disappointed, for most of the book I was just hoping for good revenge and sadly the ending just sucked.
Meet Joanna, a very rich girl with a giant attitude. I wasn't a fan of her from the start but throughout the book she only became worse and worse. Her kind of humour? Making rotten comments about people and whatever else is nearby. And she is then offended when people don't share her kind of "humour". She doesn't treat people nicely, she has many mean comments about her mom. She has two boys she strings along, one is Dex our dead boy who she dated first but who she thought just wasn't good enough for her, two is Shep, a rich boy who rides a jaguar and is perfect for her. Yep. Love triangle, because Joanna thinks that breaking up is hard to do. Her plan at the start was to just ignore Dex and date Shep, but with a dead Dex she decided to go out with both. This girl ladies and gentlemen, this girl. Holy wow. She lies about many many things. Oh, yes, and if someone falls off a cliff? Don't count on her because she will run away because she is afraid mommy will cancel her cards and take away her beautiful 40k BMW. Yes, she pretends it is under the excuse of getting help, but we all know the real deal. *shakes her head*
Why do I keep reading? Hello, her boyfriend comes back while he should have been definitely dead. So I was eager to see the revenge. And with the story continuing things got more exciting and scary as Dex loses parts here and there and even pops up at random moments that are pretty creepy. So I was looking forward to him truly falling apart and taking his revenge. To confront her with the crap she did.
HOWEVER. And I will put this under spoiler tags as I don't want to spoil it to people.
So yeah, love triangles, cheating, horrible rich girls, and an ending that sucked the soul out of the book. Not happy. Not happy at all.

This was one of my favorite books. It was about how this girl named Joanna is dating Dex. Dex is madly in love with her, but Joanna doesn't even care. One day, Dex pulls a joke on her and it goes to far. Dex purposedly falls off a cliff and Joanna doesn't even help him. She runs off to get help, but then gets into a car crash. She ends up in the hospital and Dex's best friend Pete tells her that Dex died. Later on in the story, Dex comes back and his wants his last date with Joanna. Pete tells Joanna, Dex is coming back to get revenge on Joanna for leaving him to die. Joanna then kills him by putting a knife in his chest. Now, Dex is back from the grave a second time. She tries to go for the kill again but Joanna's best friend Mary came. Joaana found out that Mary was behind all of this because she did not like how Joanna treated Dex. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes mysterious books. I would have liked a better ending or if they had a continuation of this book.

I love a good horror book, especially one by R.L. Stine. One of my goals is to read R.L. Stine's backlog of books, which is very daunting and going to be tough... but I'm down for the challenge.
I found The Boyfriend at a local used book store and picked it up to continue my reading goal. I needed something a little different, so I decided to pick it up. And man... I'm so torn on this one!
Joanna is going to break up with Dex. He's obsessed with her and she's... obsessed with herself. And then he dies and she doesn't help him. Life seems like it's going to be great - there's a new hot guy after her and life couldn't be better... until Dex shows up looking dead and destroyed. He's back... and he's ready to torture Joanna.
I absolutely hated Joanna and her personality. I very much felt she deserved every bad thing that came her way. I did enjoy the actual plot that went down, but listening to Joanna as the narrator... That was rough. She was too snobby, whiny, and down right annoying. Joanna was the mean girl we all hated in high school, so why make her the lead? She deserves the bad things but having to deal with her as the narrator didn't work for me. It was almost too much. I can see why R.L. Stine made her the narrator, but still... it was just a bit too much for me.
The actual horror was impeccable. I am impressed with the story as a whole and highly recommend it for someone looking for a short horror read.
Two out of five stars - Not for the plot, but for Joanna who made me want to DNF this quite a few times. I think if there was some sort of anthology television series with this as an episode, it would work so much better. The book just needed refining for me not to want to bash myself over the head as I listened to Joanna narrate her way through.

This has been so far one of the most entertaining Point Horror books I have read. It had the perfect mix between teenage drama, horror and so many twists and turns that you will have to keep guessing until the very end.
Interestingly enough even though our main character was I believe annoying on purpose, you really get invested with her story and even though you might not end up feeling sorry for her, she will have to go through a lot to discover the truth.

Wow... I loved this book. It was the first R.L. Stine book I read, a LONG time ago. Perfect for teens working their way into horror-horror. Was nice to read through again.

Great horror-lite for all ages. The plot was not what I expected and I genuinely felt Joanna's fear and confusion - while simultaneously hoping for her to get her comeuppance! A weak ending with some elements predictable while others were wholly unexpected. Completely worth the hour~ it took to read.

Joanna, a rich girl was with a poor boy named Dex. But slowly she figured out she didn’t have any interests on Dex anymore. Therefore, she decided to break up with him. But before she said that, Dex had died incidentally by felling off the cliff. And Joanna started to date with another rich boy named Shep. One day, Dex came back and tried to convince her that he was still alive while Dex’s best friend, Pete insisted Dex had already died. Joanna then had the idea of having two boyfriends at the same time. But slowly, Joanna had smell rotten smell from Dex and his skin was green color and starting to fall apart. Soon, Joanna knew he came back from the grave to get revenge on her since she had left him to die after he got an accident. But Dex had made up this joke, because he wants to teach Joanna a lesson. And Joanna killed him by stabbing his chest with a knife. Therefore, it was a truth that Joanna had really killed him this time. At last, Dex came back from the grave the second time. And Joanna found out Mary, her best friend was really the one who made up all the stories, who planned all the revenges. Mary was the one who loves Dex, so she could not stand up with Joanna who wanted to dump him!

Joanna stands Dex up at the mall as she is “so over him”. So over him in fact she heads straight home and asks another boy out that very same night! You think that’s cold? Joanna only knows cold! Dex turns up at Joanna’s bedroom climbing through her window asking to go to The Promontory (a very high cliff) she simply can’t turn him down can she?! But then Dex falls to his death whilst trying to scare/impress Joanna. If her Mother found out her life would be ruined….. no more BMW or charge cards for Joanna and Joanna is no normal scared Point Horror girl….she basically couldn’t give two hoots…..but of course she “runs to get help”. Flash forward to two months later and the creepy phone calls start…..from her dead ex Dex!!!! Gasp indeed….. Dex is back…..and he seems very different….back from the dead…and frankly Joanna was rather disappointed!
Other highlights include some cutting one liners from Joanna (possibly the worst PH girl out there 😂), a nightclub called Barks that features lots of giant painted dogs, posh cars, 2 love interests and a dramatic ending!
This was a wild ride and we loved every minute of it!

Do you like hearing about mysterious and chaotic things? This book is great because it keeps you thinking about everything that is happening all at once. I loved this book. I loved this book because it keeps you thinking about everything that might happen after each part. It is kind of mysterious because things happen in a very creepy way. I would say that while you are reading this book, do not have anything else except the book. This book is also kind of scary. It just talks about a girl going through some weird and creepy situations in life. I recommend this book to anyone who loves chaos and likes hearing about situations with mysteries.

Teenager Joanna is getting bored with her bad boy boyfriend, Dex. Instead of breaking up with him she strings him along while also starting to date Shep. But one night she is out with Dex and he dies in a horrible accident. Then Joanna starts to receive phone calls from someone who sounds just like Dex...
This was a fun read! Classic Stine with a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter. Joanna was a great 'spoiled brat', the kind of character you love to hate. She was so awful so it was entertaining to see the story play out.

I recomened this book about a girl who's really stuck up and she likes to make ppl squirm and wait on her she's really a snob one day she stands up her boyfreind dex for another guy that night she sneaks out with dex and he falls off a cliff she runs and drives away to get help and gets in a car crash and has to go into the hospital she thinks dex is dead and he comes back from the dead for one last date...

The main character is so spoiled you have no idea, but the like towards the ending though didn’t see that coming...this wasn’t my favorite one overall I liked it okay just not really for me if that makes since.

Not as good as The Babysitter but definitely better than Halloween Night. Nice couple of twists in there. Hopefully they’ll adapt this one in the Point Horror tv series

In R.L. Stine's book The Boyfriend, there are many mischievious things that go on. The ending was sortive a drag for me because I didn't really understand it. Joanna had actually died instead of Dex and it was really confusing for me to catch on. It really left me uninformative. Through out the book you have to pay really close attention to what is happening, or else your not going to know what happend at the end of the book. For me I had to jot down notes to keep track of what just had took place.
If I could put the book into four words they would be clueless, devastating, mystery, and love. One of the reasons why I thought it was clueless is because, I didn't understand what had happend at the end of the book. All of sudden your reading and then it just said that Joanna had died. For me I didn't know what was going on! I just assumed that, maybe she was dead to begin with.
This book was very devastating because, in the end you learn about the awful things that Dex had done to Joanna.I mean he told her he was dead. And then when you finish the book you learn that Joanna is actually the one that is dead. If R.L. Stine would of made the ending different, I think he should've just had Dex stay alive and then have him and Joanna fall back in love. But that's not the way he wanted it. He wanted it to be a mystifying tragedy.
The mystery kind of falls in place with love because, all the love that they had, there was mystery behind it. Dex faked his death to the point that Joanna probably wanted to shoot herself. But he did it to win her love back. He did it cause he loved her. If there was no love in this book there would be no mystery. And if there was no mystery, there would be no love in the book.
Overall this book was fantastic! It's one of my favorite books ever! It teaches you a lot of life lessons. And that's something that I looked forward to in the end. If you haven't read this book then I encourage you one hudread percent to read it!

This story turned out to be exactly what you probably think it would be judging by the cover and blurb. I still can't figure out whether or not I read it all those years ago, but on the whole I think I must have because I remember the name Shep as well, bizarrely, as the scenes featuring Joanna practicing with her tennis coaches. I could not, however, remember any of the "horror" elements.
This is probably a good thing, because they weren't all that horrifying really. I remember being irrationally terrified of the events of Beach House back as a young gargoyle, but I can't imagine that this one ever scared me that much, if in fact I did read it as a youngster. If you picture all those celluloid teen slasher films like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream, than you'll have a pretty good idea how this story turns out, although there is a lot less violence, which surprised me.
Joanna is a right piece of work - selfish, horrid to her mother and generally a bad seed - and she discovers toward the end that the undead appreciate a little acknowledgement during their living years, otherwise they might just come back with a vengeance.
The best thing I can say about this one is that it was a quick read. Nothing particularly unexpected happens, there are no shocking horror bits and generally this can be considered a fun, no-brainer of a read for when you want to escape.

It's no masterpiece, but I really did not see any of the plot twists coming at all, so for that, I'll give it four stars.

As soon as I started reading, I got a different impression, not so much a mystery, but a chick flick. Luckily I kept reading, the book went on and I couldn’t keep my eyes off the pages. I didn’t want to put the book down. You’re constantly wondering what could happen next; why there’s so many obstacles. In the book there is a main character named Joanna. She is a self centered teenager only wanting to mess with the minds of different boys. She is pretty careless, which gets her into a situation that is fairly dangerous. The Boyfriend was definitely for my entertainment. Entertaining by allowing me to put away my phone without wanting to get it back out. Making me have these amazing expressions in the middle of class and everyone wondering what exactly is happening in my book. I’m glad I read this, it was an easy read and a good amount of enjoyment. I would recommend this to many people that are wanting something so effortless and exciting.
