The Dark Elements #0.5

Bitter Sweet Love

Rate this book
Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny fending off demons and maintaining the balance between good and evil. He was her everything…right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn't help that Jas's father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.

And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation.

5 amazing stars!!!

"I loved you the night you brought me pudding and stayed with me until I fell asleep. That was eleven years ago and my love for you have never faded. Not for one second."

Jennifer L. Armentrout is an amazing author. Every book she writes- I love!

So... Bitter Sweet Love is a prequel novella to her new series THE DARK ELEMENTS. It goes without saying- it's amazing! It’s a wonderful beginning of the series. The story and the new world that Jennifer introduces are stunning and captivating...I loved every word.

Dez and Jasmine (two interesting creatures- gargoyle Wardens) are friends since they were really young. Dez is everything to Jas right until he disappears for three years without contacting her during this time. Now he is back and he wants to mate her. But Jas is not ready to forgive him so she agrees to give him seven days to convince her. Also she has some conditions he has to meet...

Dez is perfection!!! He is ready to prove his love. He is ready to give Jasmine everything she wants and to make her happy. But first he has to explain where he was for the past three years...

“But what I’ve told you is true. And like I said before, I’ll wait. No matter how long it takes to prove that I do love you, I will.”

The novella introduces the characters from the next book- Zayne and Layla. Although this is a very short read I can say without hesitation- this series will be epic!!! If only I could read White Hot Kiss NOW.....!! !!!

This was a re-read because I read it over a year ago and I forgot how much I liked it.

The story follows Jasmine who is a gargoyle (yeah you read correctly… a gargoyle) who was promised to a young gentleman Dez that her family took in after a tragic accident. This is everything that Jas wants yet after her father lets the rest of the clan know his intentions of them mating Dez disappears the next day without a word… urgh, men!

Jas is heartbroken which is completely understandable, imagine the love of your life just disappearing after your father swears you to him?! Dez turns up 3 years later (way hotter and a lot manlier) like nothing has even happened (again men urgh!) and expects everything to go back to normal. Jas finds this hard to swallow just like any female would, why did he leave? Was it because of me? Where did he go? So many questions yet so little answers.

So obviously, like any other female Jas doesn’t take this too well as everyone rejoices at the fact that he is back and both of them are back on, she uses this to her advantage to lay down some conditions for their promise to each to go ahead. She has never really left her home so she wants to go see New York, Washington, Philly, learn to drive and even skinny dip, Dez like any red blooded male (gargoyle or not) loves the idea of this but also has one condition… he gets a kiss after each condition is completed… SWOON!

The story leads up to you meeting Zayne (again swoon) and Layla who have such an unusual story which I have fallen in love with already. The way he treats our little half demon had me in complete awwwwage smiling from page to page wanting to know more. Then out the blue, the untrustworthy hot stranger gets thrown into the mix which has you opening the next book before the previous has even closed.

I love Jennifer L. Armentrout, her writing style and the way she makes you swoon over characters has always made her my favourite author and this little add on reminds me of how much I love her books. In true Armentrout style it is packed with lots of heartbreak, drama, and more swooning than one girl could ever imagine.

"Because loving you... loving you was bitter sweet."

Bitter Sweet Love is the prequel novella of the Dark Element series. I started White Hot Kiss few days ago but while I was reading the first few chapters, I found myself quite confused with various terminologies such as Seeker demons, fiends, Poser demons, etc. that I was wondering if there is a prequel that will explain all these things.

Thankfully I found this novella here on GR *facepalm* and I realized I should've read it fist before White Hot Kiss.

Anyways, this novella is quite helpful because it explains those terminologies and it also somewhat gave me the brief narration as of how countless of demons scattered on earth, and what Wardens are, and what their duties are. So yeah...

This novella features the love story of Dez and Jasmine-- both Wardens who fell in love since they were still kids. The romance was okay. I found the characters sweet, but there's a downside. I thought their storyline was quite a cliche and a bit shallow.

At some point I found myself feeling bored simply because I could not connect with the characters. I think there's something wrong with me. :/

But this book somehow helped me clear up the confusion in White Hot Kiss, and it's basically a good introduction to the series so I didn't regret reading this. :)

"I loved you the night you brought em pudding and stayed with me until I fell asleep. That was eleven years ago and my love for you has never faded, Jas. Not for one second."

This one's definitely the start of something new and AMAZING!!! JLA, you really do know the way to a broken girl's heart. This book came in at the right time since I'm still grieving the end of the Covenant Series. But for a few minutes... I'm so ashamed to say that I actually forgot all about my #1 book boyfriend, Aiden St. Delphi (so sorry agapi mou).

I'm such a sucker for second-chance romance stories and with JLA's creativity and way of writing, I really got what I was looking for and more. It's like gods and aliens are so yesterday and gargoyles are the shit right now thanks to The Dark Elements. It's the perfect combination of swoony and steamy romance with a heavy dose of supernatural action, and JLA never failed in holding me captive since the first page. I would've loved to read more about Dez and Jas' past and how they'll make up for lost time but hey, beggars can't be choosers and I just hope that I still get to see these two in the next books in the series.

But you know what got me all excited about this book? That little tease of what's to come in White Hot Kiss and I can already predict that it will be a hundred times more exciting and swoon worthy than this one. Hell, I'm already in-love with both Zayne and Roth. And I already feel so much for Layla as the main heroine as well. Because of those scenes with Zayne, Layla, and Roth, I even forgot that this novella was about Dez and Jas. It was just that good. Le sigh.

I'm definitely counting down the days till White Hot Kiss is here. And I HIGHLY recommend you get in on The Dark Elements series if you're a fan of JLA's Covenant and Lux series.

How does she do it?

Gargoyles, Demons, Pukwudgies and who knows what other creatures are waiting for us in this new series.

(PS- couldn't find a good female gargolye so pix looks more like an angel)

This novella is Jasmine and Dez’s story. Both characters are Wardens (a type of gargoyle). They are old friends who find their way back to each other.

During this short novella we learn about gargoyles of the New York area. Dez returns after a three year unexplained absence and claims Jas as his mate. Jas longs to fly, to explore and to battle. All of these activities, females are forbidden to participate in. Jas goes for broke and asks for all the things she longs to do before she gives Dez her answer.

The couple leaves the mansion and sets out on a mini journey. Here’s where I wish the book was LONGER because I had a hard time getting invested in this couple’s love for one another because I just didn’t have much to go on.

I noticed that the next book, which will be a full length novel will not be more on these two. It will be about other characters which were introduced during their short journey. This saddens me because I would have liked to have gotten more of Jas ad Dez. They had the makings of a great couple but for me just needed more.

I have never read a gargoyle book before but had a picture of what gargoyles were like in my head. This book dispels all of those previous beliefs. Jennifer Armentrout paints them as beautiful, both in their human skin and in their true forms. And though their ways of life may differ somewhat from ours, they love and protect one another just as we do.

Jasmine has loved Dez almost her entire life, from the day he came into their life as an angry little boy until they day he left. It was the day after her father announced that he approved of a mating between Jasmine and Dez, he just left, without saying good bye. For three years she grieved for him, never knowing why he left or whether he was alive or dead, until the day he came back and announced that he was ready to be mated with her. Jasmine has seven days to give him her answer but she has some requirements she wants fulfilled before she does so. Can Dez win Jasmine's forgiveness? Can Jasmine love him again and is she ready to make a lifelong commitment to him.

This is a wonderful first look into this new world J.A. has created. It is different from anything she has written before and I am so excited to see where she is going to take it.

Si digo que es adictivo me quedo corta. Jenn tiene una manera de escribir que hace que no puedas parar de leer y te engancha a los personajes de una manera alarmante. Nunca decepciona.

This novella should be read before starting White Hot Kiss, which is the first book in the series. Des has left Jas after their 'mating' was supposed to proceed. He left without informing Jas, or even saying goodbye. Three years forward, Dez returns, wanting her back, but Jas can't simply forgive him after he left her. She only has seven days to make up her mind, whether she agrees or disagrees to the 'mating' proposal.

The novella has a simple storyline, and it was ok for me. I didn't quite enjoy it as much as I wanted to because I didn't like Jas as much. The part when Layla & Zayne make up their appearance was my favorite. Let's not forget the 'demon' who watched Layla!!!

I gave this book a three stars because it was ok, the .5 was because I really liked Layla & Zayne's scene and I enjoyed how another person viewed her. It also pumped me to pick up where I left in the series...

RESEÑA EN EL BLOG: https://bookstwins.wordpress.com/2018...
Me encantó.

4 out of 10

It was ok and I didn't care about the characters at all. Layla's appearance was cute, many thanks for Roth, but the rest of the story is meh. Typical romance. Nothing paranormal.

“And I’m just saying that by the end of these seven days or maybe a week from then, or a month, you’ll say yes.” He cupped my cheek and leaned in, pressing his forehead to mine. “And I’ll be waiting. No matter how long it takes.”

So amazing.

This is one of those novellas that I can read over and over and still love just as much as the full-length novels from the series. I know I can always count on JLA to get me out of a book slump. This novel did exactly what a prequel novella is supposed to do: pull you in to a new world, give you just enough background info to get the gist of the setting, introduce you to the main characters without giving too much away, and make you excited for the rest of the series. I was completely enthralled by Jas and Dez's story and fell in love with them both instantly. My only negative: I wanted more!! Great start to what I know will be a heart-wrenching series, and I can't wait to continue.

I'm finally starting this most-anticipated series of mine. The prequel was great, and I like the new characters in it. Partly because the female mc's name is the same as mine(which makes me feel much more related to the story, umm... I hope so), and partly because those protagonists had special power and fascinating skills. The idea of gargoyle and demons is quite fresh to me and I'm very curious about their species. Even though the Upper Level Demon() appearing in the end of the book looks like Seth from the Covenant series, with amber-colored eyes and the moving-snake tattoo, I'm still thrilled to meet new guys here. So I'm going to have an amazing journey with them now! :D

Bitter Sweet Love Review on K-Books

"Nothing in this world is stronger than love. It should always be enough, no matter what."

Oh. My. Gargoyles!
AAAAAHHHHHH I cannot believe I have read this book! Ever since I heard about Jen writing a series about Gargoyles I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. I mean after the initial Gargoyles? Really? It's such a weird yet wonderful thing to write about. Bitter Sweet Love was incredible and possibly one of the most unique stories I have ever read.

Jasmine is torn between her head and her heart when her first love appears in her life again after three years. He wants to pick up where they left off but Jasmine knows she shouldn't trust him. Why did he up and leave without a word three years ago? Where has he been and what was he doing? The more time they spend together the more Jasmine finds it hard to resist Dez. Can she trust him and be able to follow her heart or will her head get in the way?

I love love loved this novella. White Hot Kiss is one of my most anticipated books of next year. I am seriously counting down for it I cannot wait so when I got a eARC of this one I just had to dive right in. It was utter perfection. I loved learning about this fantastic world of the Gargoyles and it's such a new creature to read about and I love that we get this little background to them in Bitter Sweet Love.

Jennifer is just phenomenal at everything and yet again she captured my attention and my heart from the very beginning and left me begging for more... literally begging. I am begging the publisher for White Hot Kiss right now. She is cemented as the best author in the entire world in my mind and nobody is going to beat her based on this.

One extra thing I LOVED is that not only do you get the fantastic heart-pounding story of Dez and Jaz but you get a little glimpse of what is to come in White Hot Kiss. We get a little preview and meet Zayne and Layla briefly as well as a little glimpse of who I assume is Roth. Let me tell you I'm in love with Zayne already and I seriously cannot wait to see what happens with them. I seriously need White Hot Kiss NOW!

If you are a fan of Jennifer L Armentrout then I highly suggest that you pick this one up. I love love loved it. It's a heartstopping novella filled with heartpounding romance and breathtaking adventure and action. It has everything you could possibly want and more. A must-read for everyone and I am counting down the days until I can read White Hot Kiss.

"I loved you the night you brought me pudding and stayed with me until I fell asleep. That was eleven years ago and my love for you has never faded. Not for one second."

Additional Favourite Quotes:

"I don't bite. Unless you want me to."

"Maybe at the end of these seven days, you'll still say no. That doesn't mean it's over. I'm in this for the long run."

"And I'm just saying that by the end of these seven days or maybe a week from then, or a month, you'll say yes." He cupped my cheek and leaned in, pressing his forhead to mine. "And I'll be waiting. No matter how long it takes."

"I mean, if he loves you and you love him, he'll wait and everything will work itself out."

3.5 "prove your love" stars

This novella served as sort of a prequel to a White Hot Kiss.
And we meet all the characters from that book when they were kids...well, early teens actually

but this story is mainly focused on Dez and Jasmine...

and the events that follow on the journey Jasmine and Dez go on...while Dez is trying to proove to Jasmine that his feelingsd haven't changed even after his absence of 3 years..
Well, there are conditions he must fulfill and Jasmine still has to say "yes" to Dez's claim of her...

Will seven days be enough...

Will yearning and tingling passion surpass and overcome the hurt and the feeling of being abandoned and left behind?

Well, it s a novella so it must be fulfilling...well, duh?

there s all of the above in it and yet i felt pushed in all the stirring...and i never quite got the feeling of authentic and real emotions...blime me..

I guess this one is on me alone...

4/5 ★★★★☆

“Nothing in this world is stronger than love. It should always be enough, no matter what.”

This novella was so cute! I loved the relationship between Dez and Jasmine. I would have appreciated if there was a bit more action, but I really enjoyed it anyway.

I also loved that Zayne, Roth and Layla showed up. Now many things make more sense. Besides, I’m always up to read more of them 🙌🏻

So let me be the first to say that it was just decent. Yes it is a novella but I was kind of feeling bored and not excited most of the time. The only excitement I felt was at the end when the Upper Deamon appeared.

The world Jennifer created intrigued me and I need to know more. The good thing was that we got to see the world through Jasmine's eyes. She is a female Warden in addition to the actual story's lead, Layla, who is half-warder and half-demon. So we learned about the lifestyle of a Warden and now I can't wait to get lost in Layla's story. The Upper deamon which is probably the so called Roth that my friends are spazzing about seems like my new book boyfriend. (I was going to say Layla's love interest but nah!)

I also liked Dez a lot and I hope to see him around but Jasmine was boring and she didn't manage to catch my eye.

Anyway, I will not talk about Jennifer's writting style at all because I love it and I am going to analyze more when I finish the first book, which btw I am very excited to read.

Off to read some more and I'll be back with a full review for the first book of The Dark Elements!

At first I wasn't sure about this, but then I'd just literally finished reading about Aliens (Lux) and suddenly I'm reading about the Wardens, who are gargoyles!

A great introduction to a couple who found love at a young age, only for Dez to leave Jaz for no apparent reason, returning to 'claim' her. She is given the natural seven days to accept or deny this claim. It's during the seven days that I realised the story had pulled me in and I was enjoying this new species... then I was introduced to Layla, a cross between a Warden and a Demon...

Although this story finished off in a good way, it left me wanting more of Layla and Zayne - and that is exactly who the first book is about and I really can't wait...

I really enjoyed this!!

4 Stars... A world filled with Wardens and Demons is introduced in this captivating novella...We journey with Dez and Jasmine as they rediscover their lost love and the true meaning of forever... With a nice mix of action and romance, this novella held my attention from the beginning while also providing a slight backstory to the MC's of the trilogy (Layla, Zayne, and Roth) giving me small morsels of enticement... I look forward to delving more into their story and witnessing the details of this world unfold:)

A story about gargoyle, WHAT?

OK this was one different read that’s for sure!! I just love the flow and writing of Armentrout she had me hooked from the start! Well let me say it was HOT, powerful and a true love story!

Jasmine was one character I never expected when I started to read this one she knew what she wanted and she was going to get it. Even after her father announced that her and her long time crush and BFF where going to be mated and he, Dez, took off. She was determined to move on and forget him but you guessed after three years and time to mate he was back and oh was he even better looking.

It was fun to watch these two together. Dez acted like nothing happened and he never left, and Jasmine fought everything inside her to not fall for him again. But does it work and are they meant to be together? There is so much in this one that makes you hunger for more never wanting to stop. There is demons, fights, love, friendship and so much more on the story of Jasmine and Dez so get ready to fall into this one! Thanks Armentrout I cant wait for more from EVERYONE in this one!

I know there are a lot that leave quotes but I think in this novella I have to say I LVOED IT ALL! Its such a great read I promise you will love it and EVERYTHING it has to offer!
