Everyone's favorite cute little dead girl is showcased in all her morbid glory in this new collection of the timeless comic strip from Roman Dirge.
Return once against to the dark, surreal world of Lenore, the girl with a knack for unintentional mayhem and occasional wanton destruction in this fifth volume. Contains Lenore (Vol. 2) #4-7.
Roman Dirge (born on April 29, 1972) is an artist and magician, and the creator of the Lenore comic-book series; he currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
Told by his art teachers that he would never make it as an artist due to his crude style, he quit art and became a full-time magician. After a few years, his passion for art overtook him and he created the comic about Lenore, the Cute Little Dead Girl for Xenophobe magazine. The comic strips were later seen by Dan Vado, president of Slave Labor
I found Lenore purple nurples quite funny and creepy. The characters were very interesting and the Illustrations were very colorful. The story lines were good but I felt could have been better, the comedy seemed like they weren’t trying to hard but all in all I gave it 4 stars
This book contains four issues. Each one is its own continuous story. Lenore has come a long way from being more like a comic strip to this delightful narrative-driven work.
I was introduced to Lenore last year, thanks to the fine folks at Titan Books. My review is long gone, as my blog crashed a couple of months afterwards, however my love of all things Lenore remains. So imagine how excited I was to get PURPLE NURPLES in the mail a couple of days ago! I’m proud to announce that Lenore gets better with age. This new collection is a riotous follow-up to SWIRLIES that will have you cringing as much as you laugh!
I mentioned in the last review that the Los Angeles Times describes the Lenore series as, “Sweet and strange and slightly discomforting...an unholy union between Tim Burton and Dr. Seuss.” This holds true throughout this book as well, and I can’t think of a better way to describe the odd excellence that is Lenore.
In LENORE: PURPLE NURPLES, the titular little dead girl gets into a whole new mess of problems, and this time she even incites the wrath of the evil Creepig. I found this part to be my favorite of this series, especially when she and Ragamuffin watch their friend Pooty square off against the foul beast. What commences next is the greatest battle of all-time!
I cannot find a single flaw with the LENORE series, which is a huge compliment. It never gets stale, it doesn’t rehash things previously seen, and it keeps the laughs (and cringes) coming at a steady pace. In short, it’s immensely entertaining and full of originality.
LENORE: PURPLE NURPLES is a huge win for me and I can’t wait to see what author Roman Dirge does next. With any luck, we won’t have to wait another year to see a new collection published. But even if we do, I definitely have to check it out. Give this one a look for sure.
When Titan Books asked me if I would like a copy of Lenore – Purple Nurples to review, I jumped at the chance. Admittedly, it has been awhile since I’ve read any Lenore, but I’ve always been a fan. How can you not be? She’s so cute? And dead!
For those not familiar with Lenore, she’s a staple with the goth crowd. Written by Roman Dirge, she has a unique sense of life and humor that is all her own. She could have easily been made into a Tim Burton movie (back when his films were good). And now she’s back in new adventures in Purple Nurples.
Lenore – Purple Nurples features some new stories, including one about a homicidal pig ghost, which is definitely my favorite. If you want macabre giggles, you’ll want to read that one. I also especially liked the story titled “The Dweller in the Fridge,” which had some cute surprises, especially at the end. All of these stories, though, are what you expect from Dirge: they are twisted and funny. The book also features the very first sketch that Dirge drew of Lenore, along with some other nice additional artwork.
If you’re a Lenore fan, pick this one up, but even if you’re new to the title and like your humor on the dark side, you’ll appreciate Lenore – Purple Nurples.
Let’s be honest – I was a little embarrassed by how much I loved Lenore. She’s cute, adorable and oh, yeah, she’s also dead. Therein lies the allure of it – she’s so macabre and at times so gross that you can’t help but giggle, even if it’s a horrified one. When she thinks she is a “poop chop”, seriously I didn’t want to laugh. But I did. As Lenore herself says, “Let us never speak of this.”
With titles such as “Here lies King Douche Nozzle”, you are taken on a sinister ride through un-life Lenore style. My favorite chapter, “The Dweller in the Fridge”, contains pink cake and dead clowns in the basement. I don’t even know what to say to describe it. It’s very cringe-worthy and funny at the same time.
In the bonus features, there is a drawing of a baby rabbit, innocent and fluffy, standing over a deadly carrot with a bite mauled out of it. It’s awesome. There is also a copy of the first drawing of Lenore, who has evolved from looking dead to looking cute-dead, if that’s possible. This was my first foray into the world of Lenore and I’m both scared and excited to try her again.
Oh I do love that cute little dead girl and Roman Dirge for bringing her into the world. Here we find Lenore dealing with the stresses and strains of Creepig Creeping, scary fridge monsters and giving her tiny friends the best day of their lives. We also have lots of lovely bonus material including the first ever drawing of Lenore and an introduction by Clint Blackwood, Roman's friend, fan and originator of Creepig. What more can I say but get it and all the previous volumes and fall in love with Lenore yourself!
Dirge still has the magical ability to make me simultaneously laugh hysterically and cringe inwardly. I'm mean so much of the humor is just so wrong. You can't help but love Lenore even as you're disgusted by her. And her adventures just defy the imagination. Thumbs up and looking forward to more.
How delighted I was to find this. Roman Dirge has resurrected fond memories of my past with Purple Nurples. This graphic novel was funny and a joy to read like all the Lenores before it. Highly recommended!
I'm less of a fan of Lenore's longer story arcs, but this is actually one of the better Lenore stories in recent years. It's almost as funny as the original stuff, but still nothing compares to Noogies and Wedgies.
This one was really disappointing compared to the previous ones. I'm not sure what happened exactly, but it won't deter me from reading the next one. ;-)
Best. Dialogue. EVER..."No! No No NO! I can't die like this! Not like this! I'm holding on with my little poop arms. Oh, no...my poop arms are crumbling. They're crumbling!"
I first read Lenore when I was 15 years old in 2000 and have been a fan of Roman Dirge's artwork since. I love the character Lenore, the artwork in these comics are adorable. If you've never read these give them a chance. I assure you, you will be quite entertained. And you want to be entertained, don't you? Find and read "Samurai Sloth", its guaranteed awesomeness will have you hooked on Dirge's artwork too.
