This is a story about two guys who have just never found their place or the person that makes them whole. Ben and Benji work together. Ben is a truck driver and Benji is a dispatcher. Ben is a big, shy hairy bear and Benji is a small, shy twink. Lots of set ups for the stereotypes here and no big surprises.
It's VERY sweet. These two are quick with the "I love you forever and ever until the day I die" statements, but I can always forgive that a little when you have two characters who are obviously very lonely going in the relationship.
My complaint would have to be for the copious rivers of tears that Benji sheds. Holy hell, that boy cries a lot. He apologized to Ben once about it and of course, got the obligatory "that's one of the things I love about you" responses. Towards the end even Ben was crying. Damn boys, the sex seemed good, quit your crying. Apparently I'm not a fan of after sex tears.
So, a quick free read that was again, VERY sweet and VERY sobby. I'll probably read the next one though. It's about Ben's brother and I liked him. He didn't come across as a crier, so fingers crossed X X!
Short, sexy, and sweet! A unrealistic but feel-good read where serious problems are solved with a big and tough, a gentle and emotional, an ugly and beautiful knight... who has delicious BO. Lol. Although mostly insta-love and sweaty bear-twink sex, it left me happy. The length is just right; any longer, and I would have grown bored.
If you are new to Rob Colton, The Degan Incident is a superior read.
Heavy on the sex and again a rather weepy MC, but knowing what to expect I kind of liked this one. I guess being prepared helps sometimes.
If you don’t expect anything deep and meaningful story wise, but just go with the sweet HEA story then this is a quick fix. Even quicker if you skip the standard sex scenes lol.
This is my fourth read from this author and, for a free online writer, he’s pretty good. But Big Ben did not really work for me. Here’s why.
The story is about a small shy guy who meets a giant shy bear. Sweet! The basis for the story: beauty is in the eye of the beholder works for me and there was one line at the beginning that really got to me: "Benji, you're so beautiful," he whispered as he tenderly stroked my cheek. "I know I'm not a catch," he said. "And not that great to look at... but if you give me a chance, I can make you happy, Benji. I promise. I'll take care of you.”
But from here things kind of went downhill. The story is too mushy and Benji cries way to freaking much. I know he’s been abused and is in a very vulnerable position......but I’ll say it again: too much crying. Also, this story was oddly too violent for me. Not that something very violent happened, but Big Ben was just kind of violent. Even if rationally I agreed with his actions.......still, I was a bit creeped out. As if an inner abuser is waiting his chance to escape him.
Regarding Benji’s abuse, it kind of took me by surprise.
The thing is the book had all the right ingredients but the way it was delivered was lacking for me. There’s a sequel to this. I actually wanted to read that but I saw this was first in the series. I won’t be reading it though. I don’t think there’s anything else to be said about them and I really did not click with Big Ben’s brother.
Sorry for the low review by the way since this is a free book. The thing is,I read a lot of unpublished fiction and I got to respect the authors so I want to treat their stories the same as any book I paid for.
And as a last comment: this book did teach me something though : sex without a condom sure is messy :D
3.5 stars Big Ben was just so effen sweet. I love how he's described initially as ugly (just like my favorite het leading man, Terrible, in Unholy Ghosts) with a heavy brow and broken nose. But over the course of the book both myself and Benji see physical changes in his appearance as we get to know him.
The sex was dirty smutty goodness, as we've grown to expect from Rob Colton. So freaken hot, and I love the dirty talk. "Who's your man? Who's ass is this?" Love. It.
Initially Benji's emotional state was to be expected, given the horrible situation with his boss. So I was OK with the tears. And I'm OK with some happy tears later on as he falls for Ben. The key word being "some". The tears got a little out of hand. But that's really my only complaint.
A good, sexy and sweet little novella, and you know I love the freebies!
He has a very specific style, of less that perfect characters, clearly defined relationships (who tops and who bottoms) and it's nice. I also love that his work always features a "bear." I have to admit, this genre is my guilty pleasure!
The development of Benji and Ben's relationship was adorable, both shy and lonely they found love after something terrible happened to Benji and Ben defended him. While erotic, I also found that I become invested in the characters and I wanted to see their happy ending (you do in "The Davis Brothers.")
Overall, I loved this little family and I think the m/m genre needs more attention than what it's getting as there are some real gems here! Especially this novella, two very real men falling in love.
I recommend it to those who are feeling a little sombre, there's angst in the beginning (violence warning) but you'll slowly be cheered up by the love this couple have for each other.
It is a bit hard to explain why, but I adore this book. It is one of my "comfort reads," when I need something short that I know I will enjoy reading. The writing is not perfect and I know some people have complained that the main character cries too much, but I love his vulnerability and they way the characters compliment each other. I also love the size difference aspect and the fact that both characters are average-looking instead of being breathtakingly beautiful like so many other main characters are in romance. This one gets four stars!
Super saccharine. I mean 'insulin shot needed' sweet/sappy, but I read every word and I liked the couple. May be too sappy for some, and goodness knows the MCs cried about every daggone thing, all the daggone time, but I thought the story was cute.
I've this book over and over again like too many times to count. I wish it was available on amazon because I'd buy the series in a heartbeat. One of my favorite books hands down.
Well, it's fanfiction. The writing isn't the greatest. Some parts get overdetailed while others are shortened a lot. The sentences are a bit clunky and it doesn't quite flow. The characters are big, unabashed stereotypes. The sex is hot and plentiful and the story is very saccharine and sappy.
It's one of those feel good things. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a predictable sap-fest and this story provides. It's going for a very specific niche and I think it does pretty well for that.
honestly this is a comfort read for me. literotica is pretty hit or miss but this is one of the few gems i’ve come upon (so to speak). i too dream of being rescued by a 6’6” muscle bear who could throw me around like a pizza but chooses instead to gently take care of me. mostly i reread this when i have a rough day/week/month. there’s almost no plot here folks- just smut so sweet you’ll need to go to the dentist.
I love how imperfect the MCs were. I've read a LOT of novels with characters that are handsome, beautiful, perfect bodies, perfect eyes, lips, nose etc even hair... I guess this was a breather for me. It made Ben and Benji more realistic and appealing though one thing I couldn't stand was Benji crying ALL THE TIME. I mean, I'm also 24 years old and I'm a real softie with some issues on the side but man... He definitely has "bigger" issues! The HEA was predictable as well as the dynamics of their relationship. Come to think of it, the story is a big effin' cliche, however I am a sucker for this kind of genre. So if you like Cinderfella stories, you have to read this one. Oh did I mention it's free?
Why do so many m/m books have assault in them lately? I thought this would be a light, free read. And it would have been without the rape. What bothered me also was the thought that the rape is what brought Ben and benji together. They were both working at the same place, and they were polite to each other, but that's it. Another peeve for me was the crying. Crying because you are sad or hurt is fine, but in the end it accomplishes nothing. Benji needs to grow a pair or he will always need someone else to defend him. I gave it three stars for the romance between the MC. But insta love is not for me.
Okay, there were way too many tears - Benji cried at the drop of a hat, which got irritating. Other than those flaws, the romance is sickening sweet, the two Mcs are very cute together and it leave you with good feeling about their future.
Big Ben reminds me of Brute [Kim Fielding] and not just for his sheer size but for his gentle heart. I loved the way he and Benji fell for each other. I didn’t like what happened with Benji and wish to hell that his former boss was sent to ER or perhaps got gang-raped. Oh,well. It was just a wee bit agitating. Benji’s character so strongly resembles PJ’s character in Country Boy but this time, Benji was far more endearing that PJ. Their sexy times are hot as hell and I loved how Ben got all man-cave-protective of Benji. What a beautiful story with a beautiful conclusion.
