Tieck's importance lay in the readiness with which he adapted himself to the new ideas which arose at the close of the 18th century, rather than in any conspicuous originality. His importance in German poetry is restricted to his early period. In later years it was as the helpful friend and adviser of others, or as the well-read critic of wide sympathies, that Tieck distinguished himself.
Tieck remained influential as dramatic adviser to the theatre at Dresden, and as an editor of Hans Sachs, Martin Opitz, Andreas Gryphius, and Daniel Casper von Lohenstein and of Heinrich von Kleist and Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz.
Tieck also influenced Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser. It was from Phantasus that Wagner based the idea of Tannhäuser going to see the pope and Elisabeth dying in the song battle.

Αρχικά, πήγα σε μια περιοχή του Χάρτς όπου ζούσε ένας ιππότης. Ο ξανθός Έκμπερτ.
Αργότερα ανέβηκα το μαγικό βουνό Ρούνενμπεργκ.
Εκεί, σε αυτά τα θαυμαστά μέρη γεύτηκα την φιλοξενία της καρδιάς της φύσης, όταν γελάει και λιώνει τον ήλιο και όταν πονάει ουρλιάζοντας ψιθυριστά με ψυχές λησμονημένων και άλογες αναπνοές ανέμων.
Αλλά και την μαγεία του μυστικισμού και των λαϊκών παραμυθιών, που λένε μόνο αλήθειες, με μία θαυμαστή και αδάμαστη τέχνη αφήγησης.
Γνώρισα την μοναξιά του δάσους που οδηγεί στην απόλυτη ευδαιμονία, έφυγα απο την πολυμορφία του κόσμου και βυθίστηκα στην γαλήνη και την σιγουριά κάποιας μάγισσας.
Κάποιας αρχαίας θεάς ίσως,που μες την καλύβα της έκρυβε πολύτιμα πετράδια, αρχαίους μύθους, τρομερά δηλητήρια αιμομιξίας, αναπνοές εθιστικής μοναξιάς, αναμνήσεις αλλοτινών εποχών, ποιητικά τραγούδια και μεσαιωνικές τελετουργίες για την αιώνα λατρεία της φύσης.
Μου μίλησε για απλούς ανθρώπους και μαγεμένα πλάσματα. Για την ανυπαρξία της πραγματικότητας και την υπέρβαση της φαντασμαγορίας, για την δημιουργική δύναμη που γεννιέται απο τη φύση και ζει μέσα στην άβυσσο του ανθρώπινου πνεύματος, ως αίσθημα και πάθος.
Ύστερα, προς το τέλος της περιήγησης μου άρχισα αν αισθάνομαι ένα παράξενο ρίγος και να φοβάμαι,
να μην γνωρίζω όλα αυτά που κατάφερε να διεγείρει η φύση μέσα στην καρδιά μου.
Δεν ήταν μόνο τα απόκρημνα και απομονωμένα χιονισμένα τοπία που ξύπνησαν τον τρόμο μέσα μου. Μέσα σε ειδυλλιακούς τόπους ήταν κρυμμένα φαντάσματα που πλανώνται μέσα μας και μεθούν την φαντασία μας στοιχειώνοντας την με αλλόκοτους ίσκιους πλασμάτων και μορφών.
Με μια εκδικητική μελωδία των απέθαντων ήχων και παράλογες τιμωρίες, βγαλμένες απο την σιωπή και την ηρεμία.
Έτσι, τράπηκα σε φυγή, μήπως και βρω προστασία στην βουή και το πλήθος.
Πόσο γελάστηκα τελικά.
Αφού μέσα στο χαοτικό κενό και την τρομακτική προσπάθεια να εξευμενίσω όλα αυτά που γεννήθηκαν μέσα μου και μπερδεύτηκαν ανάμεσα σε αλήθεια και μύθο δημιούργησα άθελα μου μορφές, οντότητες απεραντοσύνης ��αι αφιλόξενους χώρους όπου δεν μπορούσα να μείνω μα ουτε και να ξεφύγω. Ήταν τα δημιουργήματα μου. Έπρεπε να τα αντιμετωπίσω.
Ευτυχώς ανάμεσα σε μια διαπλοκή παραμυθένιου τρόμου περιπλανήθηκε η φαντασια μου μέχρι την τρέλα και κατάφερε να με απαλλάξει απο τα δεσμά της.

Ο Ξανθός Έκμπερτ
Η γυναίκα του Έκμπερτ διηγείται ένα βράδυ στον σύζυγο της και τον μοναδικό του φίλο Βάλτερ μια αλλόκοτη ιστορία. Διηγείται για την καταπίεση που ζούσε σαν μικρό κορίτσι από τους γονείς της, την φυγή της από το σπίτι και την γνωριμία της στο δάσος με μια πολύ περίεργη γριά. Όσο προχωράει η ιστορία γίνεται όλο και πιο περίεργη όλο και πιο τρομαχτική μέχρι που φτάνει σε μια απροσδόκητη κατάληξη. Ο Έκμπερτ θα αντιληφθεί πως η μοίρα του έχει παίξει ένα περίεργο αλλά και σατανικό παιχνίδι...
Το Ρούνενμπεργκ
Ο νεαρός Κρίστιαν εγκαταλείπει το σπίτι του για να περιπλανηθεί μέσα στην φύση και τα στοιχειωμένα δάση της γερμανικής επαρχίας. Μέσα σε αφιλόξενα μέρη και δύσβατα μονοπάτια ο νεαρός κυνηγός θα έρθει, ένα βράδυ, σε επαφή με ένα πλάσμα που μοιάζει με γυναίκα, ζει σε ένα βράχο και έχει στην κατοχή της μια περίεργη πλάκα με πολύτιμους λίθους επάνω της.
Το πρωί ο Κρίστιαν δεν μπορεί να καταλάβει αν η βραδινή του γνωριμία ήταν ένα όνειρο ή μια πραγματικότητα. Θα συνεχίσει κανονικά την ζωή του θα παντρευτεί, θα φιλιώσει με τον πατέρα του αλλά εν τέλει θα καταλάβει ότι η γνωριμία του με την μυστήρια γυναίκα εκείνο το βράδυ θα τον στοιχειώνει για πάντα...
Ο Τηκ γράφει δυο εξαιρετικά διηγήματα, δυο παραμύθια που δημιουργούν μια ευχάριστη ανατριχίλα στον αναγνώστη και διεισδύουν σε περιοχές της ψυχής όπου καμιά άλλη μορφή τέχνης ή λογοτεχνίας δεν μπορεί να φτάσει.
Στο τέλος βρισκόμαστε μετέωροι ανάμεσα στην φρίκη, την παραφροσύνη και τον αφανισμό τον ηρώων.
Γνήσιος εκπρόσωπος του ρομαντισμού, ο Γερμανός συγγραφέας πιστεύει στην αλληγορία και την αφύπνιση του πνεύματος μέσω αυτής ενώ παράλληλα στέκεται απέναντι στον "στεγνό" Διαφωτισμό.
Αγαπημένη λοιπόν εποχή, αγαπημένη θεματολογία και 5/5!!

Zwei außerordentlich schöne Märchen-ähnliche Erzählungen vom berühmten Romantiker Ludwig Tieck. Sie sind so gut wie solche Märchen sein können, aber der Leser kann sie nicht völlig ernst nehmen, weil sie sich nicht selbst völlig ernst nehmen. Sie gleichen an neoklassischen Statuen, die ebenso schön sind, wie die, die im Altertum verarbeitet werden, aber es fehlt ihnen die numinose Wirkung der von gläubigen geschaffenen Statuen. Sie gefallen einem wie präraffaelitische Gemälde gefallen einem, aber nicht mehr.

Die Erzählung „Der blonde Eckbert“ von Ludwig Tieck wurde 1797 erstmals veröffentlicht. Es handelt sich um ein Kunstmärchen aus der Frühromantik, das den Beginn dieser Epoche markiert. Tieck beschreibt einen Ritter, der dem Wahnsinn verfällt.
In der Erzählung „Der blonde Eckbert“ von Ludwig Tieck wird von einem Ritter namens Eckbert und seiner Frau Bertha berichtet, die sehr zurückgezogen leben. Der einzige Freund des Ehepaares ist Philipp Walther. Eckbert bittet eines Tages seine Frau, dem Freund als Vertrauensbeweis von ihrer Jugend zu erzählen: Bertha flüchtet im Alter von acht Jahren vor ihrem Vater, der sie grausam behandelt hat, in den Wald und begegnet dort einer alten Frau, die sie aufnimmt und ihr die Hausarbeiten und auch Lesen beibringt. Sechs Jahre versorgt Bertha die bei der Alten lebenden Tiere, einen Hund und einen wunderlichen Vogel. Die alte Frau ist sehr zufrieden mit ihrer Schülerin. Das Geschehen steht diametral zu den schlimmen Vorkommnissen beim Vater. Eines Tages jedoch verlässt Bertha die alte Frau um die Welt kennen zu lernen und erwürgt unterwegs den mitgenommenen Vogel, der ihr mit seinem Lied Angst macht. Sie kommt in ihr Heimatdorf, stellt fest, dass ihre Eltern tot sind und heiratet schließlich Eckbert. Dieser kennt die Geschichte seiner Frau und befürchtet Unheil. Als Bertha krank wird, nachdem Walther den Namen des Hundes aussprach, obwohl sie ihn nicht genannt hatte, erschießt Eckbert den Freund, weil er ihn für die Krankheit seiner Frau verantwortlich macht. Bertha stirbt daraufhin und Eckbert verfällt sukzessive dem Wahnsinn. Auf einer Reise trifft er die alte Frau aus Berthas Erzählung, die ihm erklärt, sie sei sowohl Walther als auch Hugo, ein anderer Freund, gewesen und Bertha sei Eckberts Schwester. Eckbert verzweifelt völlig und stirbt.
Die Vertrauensbasis zwischen Eckbert und Walther ist nicht von vornherein gegeben, sondern muss erst erschaffen werden. Bertha übernimmt es, von der Rahmenhandlung zum Binnengeschehen überzuleiten, indem sie darauf verweist, dass das Folgende zwar seltsam und sonderbar, aber „kein Märchen“ sei. Damit relativiert sie den scheinbaren Gegensatz und stellt beide Erfahrungswelten auf eine Ebene. Mit dem Übergang zur „Märchenwelt“ wechselt Tieck von der auktorialen in die Ich-Erzählweise und verleiht gerade dem unwahrscheinlicher Klingenden die größere Unmittelbarkeit und Aussagekraft. Da dem Bericht Berthas demzufolge eine Schlüsselrolle zufällt, stellt sich die Frage, worin seine zentrale Aussage besteht. Die Gesamterzählung endet mit einem Schuldspruch. Verfolgt man aber die Schuldfrage den Fakten nach, so verschiebt sie sich von einer Generation zur nächsten. Rückwärts gehend von Berthas Flucht aus dem Paradies gelangt man zum Versäumnis ihrer Eltern. Von diesem Punkt verlagert sich die Schuld auf den Grafen, der sein uneheliches Kind den Hirten zur Pflege überließ, und dieses könnte wiederum auf eine gesellschaftliche Ebene abstrahiert werden und es ergebe sich letztlich eine endlose Kette Schuldiggewordener. weird little spooky book, good intro to late romantic era of german canon. i’m a sucker for a religious allegory which is principally why this gets 4 rather than 3

I've read Der blonde Eckbert twice actually, but I'd never read Der Runenberg ... until yesterday ;). Regarding the first of these two, this is a tale that will first make you go "huh?" and then, when you read it a second time, you start noticing all these little details and clues which point towards how the story's going to end. (I think this is probably true for Der Runenberg as well, but I haven't studied this one in as much detail). That being said, however, the ending still leaves one with lots of questions about guilt and the morality of the tale, because it's not as straightforward as the narrator would like the reader to think. For instance (and here comes a spoiler!) can Eckbert really be blamed for marrying his sister since he had no clue about her identity? Does he really deserve to descend into madness like that?
These two tales are definitely interesting reads, in particular when you try to get to the bottom of them. The only problem I have with them (hence the three star rating) is that I didn't find them quite as gripping as I feel they should have been. I don't know, I was interested to find out how the stories would end, but at the same time I felt bored by some of the narrative (as, for example, all the descriptions of the landscape). And since I rate stories according to the enjoyment I had reading them, it had to be three stars.
These two tales are definitely interesting reads, in particular when you try to get to the bottom of them. The only problem I have with them (hence the three star rating) is that I didn't find them quite as gripping as I feel they should have been. I don't know, I was interested to find out how the stories would end, but at the same time I felt bored by some of the narrative (as, for example, all the descriptions of the landscape). And since I rate stories according to the enjoyment I had reading them, it had to be three stars.

i expected to like these, and i did! (and i kid you not they kind of made me wonder if i might like the modern horror genre bc these are basically super disturbing fairytales and i....Love well written disturbing stuff it gives me life)
the first one was my favorite. the gradual slippage from peace and wonder to fear, mistrust and insanity, until like the main character you cant tell whats real and what isnt and feel trapped in this sort of nightmareish inescapability (the ending is so intense even though i knew what it was bc i already read a summary, so....yeah.),nature in its idyllic beauty but also as an almost demonic force that demands retribution, the haunting thought that some secrets may be better left untold.
the second one was mainly interesting for the contrast between the two lifestyles that is shown through the different landscapes - basically culture vs. nature , or standing on firm ground vs the temptation of something bigger, wilder, inexplicable and out of reach, that takes possession but can never be fulfilled.

Schon vor dem Lesen wusste ich, dass es sich um ein Kunstmärchen handelt und habe mich mit den Merkmalen vertraut gemacht. Definitiv kein typisches Volksmärchen ...
Bei einem gemütlichen Beisammensein Eckberts, seiner Frau Bertha und seinem guten Freund Walther erzählte Bertha von ihrer Jugend. Daraufhin begann Eckbert an seinem Vertrauen zu Walther zu zweifeln, denn die Geschichte ist sonderbar und er glaubte eine Veränderung im Verhalten seines Freundes ihm gegenüber zu erkennen. Er steigerte sich so sehr in seine Wahnvorstellungen, dass er Walther schließlich umbrachte.
Währenddessen erlag Bertha einer schweren Krankheit, die sie befiel, nachdem Walther ein Detail aus ihrer Vergangenheit erwähnte, dass sie selbst seit Jahren vergessen hatte.
Obwohl Eckbert die Einsamkeit schätze, wurde sie ihm mit der Zeit unbehaglich. Da fand er einen neuen Freund, dem er bald so viel vertraute, dass er ihm von der Jugend seiner Frau und dem Mord an seinem Freund erzählen konnte. Ziemlich schnell verlor er auch das Vertrauen zu seinem neuen Freund und flüchtete daraufhin in den Wald. Er traf dort auf eine alte Frau, bei der Bertha jahrelang aufwuchs und diese enthüllte einige Wahrheiten ...
An einigen Stellen in der Lektüre blieb ich fragend zurück, manches war einfach sonderbar. Ich hatte aber definitiv nicht damit gerechnet, vom Ende überrascht zu werden. Aber genau das war der Fall. Mehrere plottwists fanden zur gleichen Zeit statt und alle Geschehnisse, die mich fragend zurückließen, ergaben im Nachhinein einen Sinn.

Ο Tieck στη νουβέλα αυτή παρουσιάζει τις δύο όψεις τ��υ ίδιου νομίσματος. Η ίδια ιστορία ειπωμένη δύο φορές αλλά με αντίθετες απόψεις. Και στις δύο περιπτώσεις υπάρχει ο χαρακτήρας που ξεφεύγει από τις αποτυχίες και τις υποχρεώσεις της νεότερης ηλικίας, ταξιδεύει στην άγρια και απρόβλεπτη φύση με την ατέλειωτη ερημιά και τελικά ανακαλύπτει την ηρεμία στην οικογενειακή ζωή πριν έρθει η τραγωδία...
Με αυτές τις δύο σύντομες ιστορίες, ο Tieck εξετάζει τις επιπτώσεις της κοινωνίας στον άνθρωπο με ένα μαγικό και ευφάνταστο ύφος. Σε κάποια σημεία ήταν αλληγορικό και σε άλλα υπήρχε το αίσθημα της ανατριχίλας. Διαβάζεται σε λίγη ώρα και το προτείνω σε όσους κίνησε το ενδιαφέρον! Να σημειωθεί ότι έχει και πολύ ωραίο επίμετρο.

Δύο νουβέλες, δείγματα του πρώιμου ρομαντισμού, που μπλέκουν το λαϊκό παραμύθι και την ατμόσφαιρα της μυθολογικής γερμανικής φύσης με βουτιές στον ψυχισμό των ηρώων, ενώ στρέφονται (όπως και ο ρομαντισμός ως κίνημα) ενάντια στον ορθολογισμό του Διαφωτισμού. Αμφότερα τα έργα είναι θεσπέσια, βουτηγμένα στο ανοίκειο. Ξεχώρισα ελαφρώς το Ρούνενμπεργκ, λόγω του ορεινού περιβάλλοντος.
Η μετάφραση του Αλέξανδρου Ισάρη είναι άψογη, όπως και το επίμετρο του Γιάννη Καλιφατίδη σχετικά με τον γερμανικό ρομαντισμό.

Habe nur "Der blonde Eckbert" für ein Seminar gelesen und weiß nicht so recht was ich daraus machen soll. Es war nicht komplett schrecklich und ließ sich gut lesen. (Ein großer Pluspunkt war dabei auch, dass es sehr kurz war.)
Interessant zu lesen fand ich besonders die Darstellung der vielen Gefühle und die Parallelen zwischen Bertha's Erzählung und Eckberts Reise in der zweiten Hälfte. Die Verwirrung darüber was nun wirklich geschehen ist gehört glaube ich einfach zur Geschichte dazu.

So langsam mutiert Ludwig Tieck zu meinem Lieblingsromantiker, vielleicht einfach nur deswegen, weil er im Laufe seiner langen Karriere nicht nur Romantiker war. Die witzige Komödie "Der gestiefelte Kater" steckt noch im 18. Jahrhundert, der späte "Hexen-Sabbath" ist ein historischer Roman. In der Mitte liegen unter anderem diese zwei Märchen, "Der blonde Eckbert" von 1797 und "Der Runenberg" von 1804.
"Kunstmärchen" nennt sich diese Gattung, die Tieck massgeblich geprägt hat. Mit Aschenputtel hat das, fürchte ich, wenig zu tun, um so mehr mit der "gothic novel" und der schwarzen Romantik. Mehr kann ich dazu leider nicht sagen, sonst müsste ich spoilern. Nur so viel: eine lohnende Lektüre, und sei es auch nur für den kleinen Schauder zwischendurch.

With Der blonde Eckbert and Der Runenberg, Tieck presents two sides of the same coin; the same story told twice but each with opposing ideological views. In both cases you have a character which flees the failures and obligations of their childhood life, journeys through the savage wilderness, and ultimately discovers the tranquility and contentment of domestic life until tragedy unfolds.
What separates the two narratives is Tiecks depiction of society and nature. You can view these two stories as allegories for Contractualist philosophy. Der Runenberg could be seen to represent Hobbe's point of view, that people join together in a society to avoid the savagery of nature. Der blonde Eckbert, on the other hand, could be seen to stand for Locke's belief that society itself is what corrupts people, and that humans are peaceful and tolerant by nature. In Der Runenberg, it's the mysterious allures of nature that bring about the protagonists downfall, whereas in Der blonde Eckbert, the conflict arises from intimacy and confidentiality.
With these two short narratives, Tieck examines the effects of society on man in a magical and imaginative style. I highly recommend giving them a read when you have the chance.

Es war eine schöne Lektüre, die aber besser hätte sein können. Ich habe die, für vor allem den romantischen Dichter E.T.A. Hoffmann typischen Szenen vermisst, in welcher der Protagonist nicht mehr zwischen Realität und Wahnsinn unterscheiden kann. Darf man vielleicht nicht direkt von einem anderen Dichter erwarten, dies wurde mir aber so angekündigt. Es fehlten mir auch einfach mehr Szenen mit dem Runenberg.

The most captivating feature of these stories is their simple, yet mesmerizing narrating, which hails from folk fairy-tales but is infused with a more grim romantic perspective. Unfortunately, the writer was unable to replicate the naturally flowing plotting of folk tales; in both stories, plot elements fail to come together into a coherent whole at the end, and the reader is left wondering how their outcomes were justified or inevitable - which is far from the archetypal, timeless features of fairy-tales.
In Eckberg, I did savour elements that brilliantly illuminate aspects of human nature - like the relationship between friendship and making confessions, or the all-to-human desire of knowing more of the world than one is confined to. However, the central plot element of transgression and punishment is not approached skillfully:
I enjoyed Runenberg more, but here too one is not entirely convinced the hero was worthy of his fate. I did feel, however, that the central plotline of the story goes beyond the question of justice in punishment: the uprooting of the mandragora sets in motion the hero's dissociation from reality, reminding me of a common plot element in Balkan folk legends (the sudden loss of sanity once the hero encounters hidden elements of nature - the Greek poem Ο πραματευτής by I. Griparis comes to mind).
Still, at the end of both stories, the reader is, like the hero's wife in Runenberg, dumbfounded by the grim reality of their world, and in no way released from the tension of their plots - which does much to set them apart from bland imaginary stories, and is in a way pioneering for their era.

I am always newly surprised and fascinated when I read works of German literature. German Romantic literature specifically is simultaneously gripping, harrowing, and psychologically thrilling. The theme of magic for example is a lot of the times closely related to themes of violence, madness, and (unsurprisingly) deception.
I am also quite taken aback at how unconventional these narratives are, both in form and content. This almost reminds me of Modernism. The German Romantics were subverting conventions before it became cool, I guess.

In der Schule waren die kleinen gelben Bücher oft nicht so beliebt. Wenn ich heute zu ihnen greife, ahne ich, dass ich es mit einem Meisterwerk zu tun habe. Und auch dieses Mal hat diese Ahnung mich nicht getäuscht.
Die zwei Kunstmärchen hinterließen bei mir ein unheimliches Gefühl, wie es so mancher Horror-Autor gerne könnte. Es ist nur zarter und sickert darum tiefer ein.
