She was his first love, his first heartbreak, and his only regret.
Zane Windsor always loved the way Celeste Harrison’s eyes light up when he infuriates her. It just took him years to realize that what he felt for his childhood rival wasn’t hatred.
When they begin working for their family businesses, competing on a larger scale than ever before, he decides he wants it all with her — and what Zane Windsor wants, he gets.
Zane and Celeste discover just how thin the line between love and hate truly is, falling harder than either of them thought possible...
…until an unexpected tragedy leaves them wondering if any of it was ever real at all.
Led by a desire for revenge, Zane brings Celeste’s company to the brink of bankruptcy, leaving both of their grandparents no choice but to intervene.
The Windsors and Harrisons agree to a merger — on one condition: Zane and Celeste must marry each other.
Catharina Maura is a USA Today and Amazon #1 bestselling author. She writes angsty, fast-paced contemporary romance novels that break your heart before they lead you to a hard-won happily ever after.
Cat lives in Hong Kong with her husband and a dozen houseplants that all have names. When she isn't daydreaming about future characters, she's exploring the world and seeking out new adventures.
This book is pissing me off 1.) the actual book doesn’t start until 38%…like what is described. All of it is backstory. What the actual betrayal is never described in detail. Now that is just hush hush about. Like the fuck 2.) every single chapter is just a scene. Nothing blends into each other. It’s so choppy and hard to read. 3.) girlies do not grovel. Period. Give my girl Celeste a break. She literally has gone through so deep trauma of watching her friend kill herself and not save her in time. Then blame it all on her boyfriend basically. That’s fucked up. Celeste is allowed to do fucked up shit. 4.) it’s repetitive as fuck. I don’t care that you don’t forgive her while you bone her for the millionth time, that happened last chapter.
I can not believe I’m giving a 1 star to an author who made my favourite grovel book of the year in the Temporary Wife. How did we even get to this? I feel like the heroine was done so dirty in this book and was made to beg for a man when she truly wasn’t even in the wrong she just choose to believe her deceased best friend. Really disappointed in this one, felt second hand embarrassment for the heroine throughout and disliked the hero definitely the worst brother in the series
One of my FAVE books of 2023. ANGST. SPICE. BILLIONAIRES. ENEMIES. LOVERS. This book blew me away and I will not be the same.
HE LITERALLY TEARS UP HIS DRIVEWAY AFTER HER HEELS GET SCUFFED ON THE GRAVEL AND REPLACES IT WITH SMOOTH STONE.
Zane and Celeste had my heart in the palm of their hands. I even shed a TEAR reading about how beautifully broken they were and just kept rooting for them. They are truly a Romeo and Juliet couple.
They are from rival billionaire hotel families and have been competing against each other since they were kids…but we all know hate and love is a fine line and Zane & Celeste’s hate turns into deep love…until forces cause them to break apart…
Catharina has such a BEAUTIFUL writing style. I was instantly captivated and her way of writing billionaires is top tier. I loved all the opulence and extra-ness (including a private island — hello!!!). Also … I love hotel management and adored that aspect of the books!!
I’m kicking myself for not picking up Catharina Maura earlier. I’ve seen her topping the kindle charts for ages and after seeing her at a romance convention i decided to read THE BROKEN VOWS.
Now, i don’t normally read series out of order…EVER. But when i say this is TRULY a standalone romance within an interconnected series i MEAN it. You don’t need any prior knowledge of the first books nor are you spoiled for anything that happened. Zane & Celeste’s romance is it’s own entity.
Anyway. I’m off to go binge the rest of this series and patiently wait for the next one (cause OMG I’m excited).
i literally have never read a love story where i hoped that the couple didn’t solve their issues and get [back] together—i suppose that celeste and zane are the exception. i adore maura more than anything, but this book was incredibly dire.
i loved the beginning of celeste and zane’s story expect i loathed the fact that zane had expected celeste to believe that he had simply changed in the years that they were apart. that was stupid.
part II became tedious with their constant arguing and fucking. celeste and zane used sex as a shield that they could both hide behind of instead of throughly communicating. i could easily get back together with my ex-boyfriend if i wanted to read about idiots that can’t convey their opinions and emotions in a civilized manner to each other.
zane was right about one thing in particular that he kept repeating throughout the story and it’s that he’s unworthy of celeste. she deserves infinitely better than what he knowingly and unknowingly (i would spoil the “tragedy” if i gave context about what i mean) put her through.
ANYWAY! lex is my favorite windsor brother and his and raya’s story is coming out in january! there is no doubt in my mind that their serve will change the trajectory of the rest of my life.
The first 35 chapter, “the past" was so good 😭 They were so cute together, had so much chemistry, everything he did for her just melted my heart! He was so obsessed and in love with her. The relationship she had with his family, vice versa was everything ❤️ I loved how close he was with her mom and when he said that her mom was the closest thing he had to a mother, it broke my heart 🫂 They were so in love and so good together all throughout those 2 years they dated. He even went and begged his grandma to let him marry her, and his brothers went there with him too, but she was against it. Even then he didn’t think for a second to give up on her but instead decided that he would leave everything to be with her. I actually wish we got chapters of their high school years and then this “the past” and have the book not have the present. After everything was going so well, the thing with Lily happened and she left letters, where she stated Zane was cheating on Celeste with her… and shit just went downhill.
The “present” was 5 years later after everything went down. When I was reading it I wasn’t sure how and when they broke up or if she ever told Zane about the letter, but later on we find out what happened… which was actually insane to me! And I’ll tell you why. Celeste did in fact ask Zane if he cheated on her and he said he never cheated on her, and that she was his only one (which she was, they were each other first kiss, first time, FIRST EVERYTHING 😭 and it stayed that way until the very end of the book). She didn't believe him, even when he begged. She didn’t believe him, even when he showed her his phone and company security cameras (there was nothing on there to prove he had an affair but she decided that letters were “evidence” enough). And on top of all that we find out that she used the trust he had for her and framed him and sent him to jail… of course his family, being the windsor’s were able to get him free without any charges BUT NONO she didn’t stop there! She used more information he trusted her with and tried to take down his company… it was actually so bad that his grandma had to get involved. And after everything she’d done, he retaliated by attacking her family business (but he never went as far for them to go bankrupt as he still had love left for both her and her family). I was in disbelief about how mad she was at him about what he was doing to her family company, when she did way more and way worse 💀 I get her, I do, I understood that Lily was her best friend so she wanted to believe her no matter what, BUT that man was the love of her life? He was with her everyday and when he wasn’t they were talking to each other constantly… they were planning their future together, he was ready to walk away from EVERYTHING he had, for her. Then she broke his heart and didn’t believe him 😭
There was something that didn’t sit right with me at the start of the “present” where they meet after 5 years… they actually kissed the first time they met, which was??? You hated him then, you didn’t believe him then, you wanted to ruin his life then and apparently YOU STILL DO! So how are you gonna kiss him the first time you see him??? Also the fact they had sex the second time they meet was confusing to me as well… I get it “hate sex” OKAY but up until 60+ chapters they were having sex. Previous to that and even after they were having absolutely no conversation… either it was her getting jealous and saying something, or him being mean or them saying absolute NOTHING. Like why would there be 30+ chapters with legitimately nothing happening in the plot? 😭 NO WONDER THIS BOOK WAS THIS DAMN LONG!
So let’s fast forward to nearly the end of the book (chapter 80) she finds out about Lily having BPD and that being the reason as to why she did what she did. I don't know much about BPD, but I know that every case is different, so I will not comment on the matter. But I would say that I didn’t and still don’t see the reason why the WHOLE BOOKS SOLE PLOT TWIST WAS THAT? And the fact the doctor let Lily have those delusions for two years is not okay at all 😭 And also the fact that Lily’s father found out about it right after she passed away but he didn't say anything to Celeste, for 6 DAMN YEARS???
After everything was out in the open she told Zane and she did the whole "groveling" thing for months and he did forgive her and wanted to give them a chance. And after that everything actually seemed to go well, well that was until she saw him working in the observatory with the female botanist and got jealous and didn't even wait for him to explain. Zane said that he couldn’t do this again, because she clearly still doesn't trust him, even after finding out that everything was a lie and that he never did what he was accused of. He just doesn’t want to be accused of doing something he didn't do, again. She even had a talk with her brother and told him everything, and he said if it was him, he would have a hard time to forgive her too. But that Zane loves her and she loves him, so she should give him a real chance to choose. So she went and begged their grandparents to end their marriage contract, so she could let Zane go and that he could be happy, but Zane stopped her and said they will try and work it out, as he couldn’t handle being away from her.
After all of that the rest of the chapters were actually good, he apologized too and they started working on trusting each other again. He proposed with the rose diamond ring (the same ring he’d gotten for her 5 years ago) which was really cute and sweet. I loved that in "10 years later" epilogue they renewed their vows every single year (their daughter was so adorable too ❤️) The first 35 chapters, some of the last chapters and the two epilogues, were the only reason this book was a 3 starts for me! I loved the Lex and Raya crumbs in both epilogues and I'm super excited for them! AND OMG we also saw that Xavier and Sierra are together and married in the “10 year later” epilogue 😭 I’m so excited for both of the couples and hope they will be better.
I knew there's a reason why I hadn't read this before. Now, I'm just annoyed that I wasted time and can never get it back.
The first half (the past) was a 5-star rating, and I love every minute of it except for how they ended. But the second half (the present) was just too annoying and frustrating. There's a lot of hurt, anger, and distrust between them. I don't even know if it's possible for them to get past their issues, or if that would be even believable. I guess I'll never know since I don't want to put myself through this torture anymore. 🙄
Zane and Celeste were irritating, immature, and pathetic. Now that I think about it, they're actually perfect for each other. They can be miserable together. 😒
While I know these siblings can really screw up big time, I didn't expect this kind of f*ckup from one of the FMCs. Celeste is by far the worst I have read in this series, and Ares (book 1) will always hold the worst MMC ever!!! 😡
Ugh! It was sooo not worth my time, and I just wish I hadn't read this at all. 😤
Arranged Marriage Second Chance Enemies to Lovers Childhood Rivals
This is me being generous. Actually I’m so frustrated and angry right now. I wanted to give it zero.
I’m going to give you good reason why.
The female characters are DOORMATS, they suck. Like when the book starts they’re likeable but as the book progresses they become spineless bamboo. This is one of the major problems. Other than that the plotline is too repetitive TOO REPETITIVE. Same words in different words again and again AND AGAIN
This book is in 2 parts. Part 1 the Hero and heroine meet after having a history of growing up in the same circles. He always liked her but it was a case of pulling her pigtails in the playground to get her attention. Sadly, due to his youth, he went much further to embarrass her with various rivalry incidents that caused great hurt and problems to her, he was unaware of the consequences.
Despite her thinking he has been a man-whore type he is only ever with her and her only with him. They secretly date, plan for marriage as their families are rivals in business. Just before their plans work out, events come to light that leads to a bitter breakup. We don't see the breakup, we just get hints and comments. I did find this a bit odd, it's not clear what actually happens about the breakup until later.
Part 2 is 5 years, I think it is later. They are bitter enemies, their grandparents decide to bury the hatchet and merge resulting in an arranged marriage between the pair.
I do have issues with the 'marry him/her or I'll disinherited you', is a lifetime of unhappiness worth buisness? I think I'd walk away, leave them get on with it.
The angst between them is sad, they try really hard to hurt each other all because of events in the past. I have to say I was in the mood for a super angsty story and this did fit the bill for me at the time. There are alot of things said that are really hurtful, the heroine took vengeance on him for the supposed affair by planting evidence that almost led to him going to prison relating to his business. He is struggling to trust her again, she is struggling to believe he won't cheat, even after she discovers the truth, they have counselling to deal with their issues.
HEA. Epilogue 10 years.
Spoiler. Her bf commits suicide, she said she couldn't cope with the fact she'd been dating the Hero the same time as the heroine, she tells the heroine she didnt know he was seeing them both. She couldn't cope with seeing them happy together after her own heart is broken as she loves him too. We find out much later her friend had mental illness as revealed in the triggers. He wasn't cheating.
Trigger warning from the author.
Please be advised that this list contains major spoilers for The Broken Vows that could ruin your enjoyment of the story as it’s meant to be experienced.

“You taught me that love isn't always perfect, like I once thought it would be. It's laughter and inside jokes, home-cooked meals and flowers, long conversations and apologies. It's patience and grace, but above all, it's choosing each other, over and over again, even when it isn't an easy choice." EXCUSE ME WHILE I GO FEEL ALL THE EMOTIONS 🫶🏻🥰 I’m so sad the book is over!
Zane and Celeste’s story was simply captivating. Childhood rivals turned lovers for the dang win! Classic “boy is mean to girl because he likes girl” scenario BUT so much better. Zane will make you swoon from the first few pages. If you’ve read any of the other books in this series, you know that these Windsor men set the bar high for book boyfriends. Zane claimed the top spot here friends. If you love a MMC that will fight for his girl, this book is for you! Possessive, sweet, dirty talking = yes please!
I absolutely loved every small detail Catharina included that made the story that much more sentimental (I would say more but no spoilers here 😉)- be prepared for all the emotions! My angst loving self was more than satisfied when all the pieces came together. This is definitely not your typical arranged marriage story. Zane and Celeste fight for their HEA (I felt like I fought with them 😂)👏🏻
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and I am so honored! Great combination of plot, spice and emotions. Catharina knocked this out of the park 👏🏻🥹♥️
I have so many thoughts about this book. I was relatively excited to read it, although i didn't have high hopes considering my dislike for the first book and the 2nd and 3rd were ok but not great either.
1) The present time doesn't start for about 200 pages in (38%), i wish this would've been shorter, but i feel like the most important part was cut out? Meaning the breakup. It's stated in present time how what Celeste did was so unforgivable but it never really goes into much detail, is it really just sending him to jail... Although i know it ends up not being true, i understood why Celeste was believing her bestie over Zane, especially when she had "proof".
2) I feel like Celeste was treated really poorly by everyone and honestly made me dislike the Windsor family and i feel like it was never really resolved and was kind of pushed under the rug and she was the one constantly apologizing when no one was really taking her side. I can't imagine the pain she had to go through watching her best friend jump off a bridge after basically being told by her bestie its basically her fault, does no one care about how celeste took that??? it was all about how Zane felt and how she reacted when she was grieving. I felt like no one had offered her support, maybe they did and that's why i wish this part would've been shown.
3) Lily's Dad waiting 5 years to tell Celeste about what really happened... ok... you're telling me even though she disappeared there was absolutely NO WAY to contact her??? and waiting a whole year after she was back to tell her the truth???
4) I'm not familiar with bpd, but based on other reviews it wasn't well executed. I won't comment on it, but i did feel like it was sort of a stretch...
5) Grandma Anne needs to die asap
6) Some people just aren't meant to be together and Celeste & Zane are a prime example of those people. It was just forced and way too toxic. His other brothers had issues with their wives as well, but i feel like i could actually feel love between them, where with Celeste and Zane i was actually hoping they'd divorce.
7) Catarina Maura has a special talent for writing the shitiest parents/grandparents on the planet (i'm looking at you grandma anne and grandpa harrison)
8) I hope i never have to read the word Celestial ever again in my god damn life
It took me a while to be able to write this review. This book gave me emotional whiplash. There were moments where they were acting all cute and romantic but at the next chapter they were hating each other's guts all over again.
It was pretty obvious that they hurt each other in crazy ways. I do think Celeste went way too far. I get it, she was grieving and heartbroken but it was way too much.
The emotional wreck I was with the girls situation, was crazy. At the same time, it felt forced the way the girls forgave her. I needed Celeste to explain to them why she acted the way she did, and what she thought Zane did. Not to put the blame on him but for them to understand where she was coming from.
There were a couple of things that were left out,and also sometimes the intimacy scenes between them felt forced. I have many reasons why I cannot give it five stars, but those are the strongest.
There were so many unnecessary situations… so much drama. It didn’t work.
Okay mark me surprised! I have avoided this authors books for the most part because I always thought she had cheating, long separations, sex with other people etc but this one did not. The heroine had a best friend that committed suicide and while going through her things, she finds a diary where the girl says she had an affair with the hero. And she leaves a letter. The heroine is devastated and leaves him. He swears he didn't but she believes her dead friend. They are total enemies for five years. Extreme enemies. They are forced together and made to marry. It is hell but they still have hot sex. It is a journey and I loved how it all ended. I am really glad I read this one. Its like one of my old Harlequin presents, except the hero in this one is faithful. Nice change from all the recent stories.

First of all, read the trigger warnings if you might have triggers. The author asks you not to because it can ruin the story, but someone takes their life in the book and everyone should be warned of that.
Second, the heroine is treated absolutely terrible in this book. I cannot believe that she was not given more grace after what she went through. It was terribly sad how she was treated by everyone in the book.
I love this series and this author, but this was not well done. Super disappointed.
I've really enjoyed this series so far, but this book just wasn't for me. When it hit the 5 year time jump things just went downhill in my opinion and it made me not even want to finish the book. I actually started to skim because the story felt like it was moving along pretty well and then we get this big shocking scene and instead of being able to get more of that the story then jumped 5 years and left so many unanswered questions. I don't think it was a storyline that could easily be glossed over yet the book tried to do that. The characters had a lot of drama in that time that we didn't get to see but we never truly got to learn what happened between them. It just felt lazy to try and skip over these big scenes and then just give us a few throw away lines afterward to try and explain what happened between the characters in those missing years.
I'm still interested in reading more from this series so I'll definitely continue with it.
SCREAMING, CRYING, THROWING UP. My standards have risen at a concerning level, and I'm pretty sure at this rate I'll die single, but hey, at least I got to experience love like this by reading
“How could I fall in love with someone I never fell out of love with?”
The book tells the story of Zane Windsor and Celeste Harrison. They've been each other's nemesis since they were little kids—always competing, always trying to outdo each other. After a night that changes their relationship, she leaves for college and that makes him realize he has feelings for her. So when she comes back, he tries everything to get her to feel for him what he feels for her—and he does it! Zane and Celeste start a relationship full of love, trust and partnership. They are unbreakable, inseparable and dream of a future together. (And they're the cutest, really. Their relationship at this point is probably the best part of the book.) Then so many unfortunate and bad things happen, they break each other's hearts (not necessarily on purpose) and start to hate their counterparts like they used to do. Now, five years later, they not only have to get reunited again, but they also have to get married—like they once wanted to, only that now they can't even stand the idea of being around the person they once loved the most. And here's the thing: after being let down by three books (the third one not so much tho), I actually liked and enjoyed this book. Yes, there was too much unnecessary drama and pain, but still somehow, I've grown to really really like both Zane and Celeste, to understand and feel for, and love them. Celeste is amazing, what can I say? She's very intelligent and strong, and so loyal to her convictions—maybe even too much for her own sake. She's been through a lot and endured a lot alone. She's also made mistakes (so many of them, although I admit I can understand her reasoning behind it), and seeing I liked following her through her path of learning and redeeming herself, seeing her trying hard. And the same goes for Zane. He's smart, hot, and interesting. Also stubborn as hell. And like it happened with Celeste, I liked seeing working to overcome the past. Zane and Celeste are a great and beautiful couple. In the past, like I said before, they were the cutest. Their relationship was so full of love, and they complemented each other so well. And though their trust in each other wasn't as full as they used to think (at least on her part), it was also full of it. And even after everything they were put through and everything they did to each other, they're still good, and honestly they make sense—they match and combine, and you can feel for them as much as you can understand their feelings. And despite really liking and enjoying the book, I still feel like the development wasn't as smooth as it could've been, which is a pattern with the author, I guess—she puts too much unnecessary drama in the book, then she has to rush to get everything solved in a way that makes sense, and it doesn't work most times. So now I'm currently just mourning what they could've been only if the author knew how to develop a story better. Anyways, I really liked and enjoyed their story and yeah yeah, I love them. And even knowing I shouldn't, I’m excited for Lexington’s book and really looking forward to it! And the same with Sierra’s (mesmo já tendo algumas opiniões secretas sobre como vai ser)!
An overly generous 1 star (for the sort of grovel). This is one couple that never should have had a first chance, never mind a second.
It's been a while since a book both annoyed and disappointed me quite like this one did, ergo the rant. It was 516 pages of twaffle and nonsense, on repeat, ad nauseum. It was like wading through sludge uphill just to get to the end of this book.
But the most annoying part is that the PIVOTAL story lines HAPPENED OFF PAGE!! Seriously, why would the author do a daft thing like that? The break up and all the feels, angst and devastation at the time - off page. Their take downs of each other, including her plotting his downfall and planting fake evidence to implicate him in corporate espionage and him being jailed - off page! Yet the author managed not only to fill the book with so much nonsense that it didn't even really start until the 40% mark, she then proceeds to have them pushing each other away for the rest of the book, over and over again till their HEA which really, I'm sad they got.
The only good thing out of the 516 pages is the couple of short scenes at the end when she sort of grovels.
I love CM books, especially her Windsor series. This didn’t feel like the other books. It was such a toxic book of misunderstandings, childish arguments and blatant toxic attitude. This is exactly what couples shouldn’t be like. This is not HEA this is an event that’s never really explained, that the MMC spends a godly amount of time punishing the FMC because they can’t sit down and have an adult conversation. And the FMC just, forgives the MMC and then happily ever after… like how? Accepting toxic behaviour is not a HEA. This couple shouldn’t be a couple.
Honestly this book was too long and the first part could have been the whole book🤷🏻♀️ like the past was there, the chemistry and the problem. The second part was super unnecessary and repetitive.
i only read like half of this. 500 pages & 97 chapters is crazy to meee rn. i might go back and read the whole thing but i skipped around enough to get the gist. take my review with a grain of salt 💀
it was heartbreaking see how much they still loved each other yet their trust was just totally gone. one thing i love about this author is she doesn’t make her books happen in like a month. the reader gets to see their past relationship (skimmed this) and then after a 5 year time jump the present takes place over a span of a year.
now i’m a girls girl so i was totally on team celeste about getting her revenge after she was sure that zane cheated on her with her best friend. however after reading all that he did to prove to her otherwise and she just wouldn’t believe him i didn’t like the fact that she threw everything back in his face.
the windsor men are all good to their wives regardless of how their weddings happened and you can see how zane wants to be a good husband. there would be good times where everything looked like it was going well then something would happen and he would remind her how he doesn’t want her, he would never pick her if he had the choice. this made me 😭 and i wanted to hate zane for it but honestly i get it!
they BOTH groveled in the end. it was refreshing to see celeste have to grovel but then zane had to also grovel and it kinda made what celeste do lose its appeal. imo she should’ve been the only one to beg for forgiveness. she spent 85% of the book thinking her now husband cheated on her and was willing to forgive him for something he never did!! 🙄 then zane had to get celeste to believe that he wanted their marriage and was willing to really try.
tbh i’m gonna give this 5 stars just bc i’m like 99% sure they were each others first and only. ((unless i missed something about other women which someone pls tell me i didn’t))
