It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak’s bestselling author career.

“I caught my day-care provider drugging my children with cough syrup and Tylenol to get them to sleep while I was away,” Brenda says. “It was then that I decided that I needed to do something from home.”

However, writing was the last profession she expected to undertake. In fact, Brenda swears she didn’t have a creative bone in her body. In school, math and science were her best subjects, and when it came time to pick a major in college, she chose business.

Abandoning her academic scholarship to Brigham Young University at the age of 20 in order to get married and start a family, Brenda dabbled in commercial real estate, then became a loan officer.

“When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book,” Brenda admits. “I learned how to write by reading what others have written. The best advice for any would-be author: read, read, read….”

Brenda sold her first book, and the rest is history. Now a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, she continues to publish two or three novels a year, in a variety of genres.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are the proud parents of five children—three girls and two boys. Now that they are empty-nesters, she spends her free time babysitting her two grandchildren.

When she’s not with her family or writing, Brenda is usually raising money for diabetes research. To date, she's raised almost $2.6 million. Her youngest son, Thad, has diabetes, and Brenda is determined to help him and others like him. She also enjoys traveling, watching sporting events and biking--she rides an amazing 20 miles every day!

The heroine is ethically compromised to say the very least. She reminds me of Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Rocket Raccoon: Question. What if I see something that I want to take, and it belongs to someone else?
Rhomann Dey : Well, you will be arrested.
Rocket Raccoon : But what if I want it more than the person who has it?
Rhomann Dey : Still illegal.

I shouldn’t have read this book, the blurb itself was giving me a warning…

We always rant on how disgusting the male protagonist was. But see female protagonist can follow this trait too …

The heroine, Delaney lives in Dundee, she was 30years old, portrait as an innocent, honest & kind-hearted one. But what she did was cunning & reckless. I just couldn’t pass that and forgive her. She wanted a child for herself but artificial insemination was too expensive for her so that’s why she chooses the easiest way. She thought to find a man and sleep with him to get pregnant. And she exactly did that.

The hero was 31 years old and came to Dundee to work on his grandpa’s ranch. The hero was a rape child and his maternal uncles despise him for that. Because of his uncles, his life is a living hell. He came to work on the ranch to prove his worth and everything.

Main Plot: The heroine goes to the bar and picks the hero who was an ultimate version of a Huge Jackman. The Hero asked about the protection and she said not to worry about it. And both of them were clean. The heroine intention was clear to have sex, get pregnant and never tell the hero about it. She wanted a baby on her own. The hero’s intention was like she is hot & she wants to get rid of her virginity and I will be having a good time… so why not?

Before having the marathon sex they talked about themselves and get comfortable with each other. The morning after- the heroine panics about the whole thing. The hero said he liked her, want to know more about her and asked for her number. The heroine somehow managed to not giving the number to the hero and leaves and the hero felt bad about it.

Later they meet again and the whole thing came to light and the hero felt betrayed. He was angry and threatened the heroine.

* The heroine used the hero as a sperm donor without telling him about the whole idea. where is your honesty woman?
* And the heroine was planning to raise the child as her own and never involved the father here.
* How can be a person like this? Is having a child is so important that you deceived a person without thinking about the consequence?
* She was planning to raise the child on her own. Did she forget that a child needs father too…? And one of the important things here is -the heroine was an orphan and was raised by a town couple. She should have realized it better than anyone that how a person feels when one parent is missing.
* And her financial situation wasn’t good either. Wanting a child when your financial situation is not good is another bad thing to do.

Stupid, Disgusting, Deceiving, irritating which word is best for the heroine I couldn’t decide. On the other hand, I find the hero’s story was very satisfying. He was on the path of salvaging a dying ranch and at the same time fighting for his own identity also. The hero forgives her very easily and nobody finds out about her deceiving story also. she got off very easily. 🙄😣

Thoughts About the Next Book: I am skipping it. Not sure about the hero of the book but I am damn sure about the heroine. She was damn irritating and a good for nothing friend. She is the one who very much influenced the heroine to find the sperm donor by deceiving.

Safety Issue: It was safe.

Fairly decent read. A lot of people aren't going to like it because the heroine starts out hoping to get pregnant by a one night stand not meaning to ever tell the father because she can't afford to go to a sperm bank. I didn't really have a problem with it because I understand the whole baby hunger thing and we do after all need something to hang our story on. I just wish that there had been more to them falling in love. It was sort of underwhelming. The hero held on to his anger too long and the heroine was just suddenly in love. Still it was quick and readable.

For some reason I really liked this book. It was well written and had the right emotions intact with the characters and what they were experiencing. I love the fact that everything worked out for our hero and heroine, it was a beautiful book!

Usually sweet, small town romance leaves me cold. But the writing here is pretty darned good! So although the town felt fake, the people felt real. (Loved the best friend.)

And, let's face it, I'm a sucker for secret baby novels.

Poor Delancey! The hero is really hard on her for much of this book. Some readers probably had a hard time with that. But I found it realistic and compelling.

This book is part of the "Sweet Life" boxed set for Brenda Novak's charity.

No pude con Delaney, es inmadura, egoísta y codependiente. INSUFRIBLE. No es que esta serie sea para tirar cohetes, pero entretenía. Si hubiese leído este antes de los siguientes, no la sigo.

I liked this book. Delaney is a 30-year-old “spinster” who always tries to do the “right thing” and be the “good girl” as she doesn’t want to disappoint the couple that took her in and the “town” that helped raise her. She was left alone in Dundee, at a very young age, when her unwed mother died. Her mother had been considered a woman of “loose morals”. The one thing Delaney wanted most in life was a family to call her own. She always felt like an outsider and someone that everyone was looking at critically, in case she turned out to be just like her mother. She felt the sting of never being legally adopted by the couple that took her in, even though they did give her their last name. On her 30th birthday, Delaney bemoans the fact that she has no steady boyfriend, no wedding in her near future, and therefore no chance to have a baby of her own, to her best friend and roommate, Rebecca. Rebecca has been labeled as the town’s wild one. No one can seem to understand how these two girls that seem like complete opposites could be such good friends. The thing is, no one really knows the “real” Rebecca. So Rebecca comes up with an idea to get Delaney to have a one-night stand with a complete stranger, outside of their own small Idaho town. Delaney desperately wants to take charge of her life and sees this as a way to get the one thing she really wants.
Conner Armstrong has always been “the odd man out” in his own home and is constantly reminded by his Uncles that he’s only there because of his grandfather and his mother, their adopted sister. He has been the “black sheep” of the family. In an effort to get him out of their grandfather’s good graces, the Uncles hatch a plan to have Conner attempt to save his grandfather’s first farm before it loses any more money and in the meanwhile do whatever they can to be sure he doesn’t succeed. On his way to the farm, from California, he flies into Boise, Idaho. He is staying in a local hotel. He decides to unwind a little in the hotel bar when two women walk in. Rebecca and Delaney have gone to Boise to see if they can find the man to help out as a “sperm donor”. They figured it was their best shot at an uncomplicated solution to Delaney’s wish for a baby, where they were unlikely to ever see the “father” again. Little do they know when they set their sights on Conner that he is moving to the farm just outside of Dundee….
As I said, I enjoyed this story, even though in our present day, I find it highly unlikely that two women would actually do something like this. It seems a bit too risky and dangerous.

Usually when I read a romance novel, I start with "Romance novels aren't my thing, so even though I didn't like this take my review with a grain of salt." This time I'm gonna start by saying even though romance novels aren't my thing, this book was dang entertaining and I kind of loved it.

The protagonist, Delaney, has a one night stand with a stranger to get pregnant. She thinks she'll never see him again and he'll never know, but things don't go quite as planned...

Don't get me wrong, this is no upcoming classic, and contained the typical romance staples: melodrama, controlling male love interest, protagonist makes some stupid decisions. But unlike many romances that come across as it was written that way because that's how everyone writes romance, I feel like this author takes these cliches and utilizes them in a creative way. Sometimes it works, sometimes it makes you raise your eyebrows, but still I was kept waiting to find out what happened next.

Oh, and you know the "protagonist's crazy best friend" who only exists to push the character into doing things they wouldn't normally do? In this book, she has an actual personality and is probably the best character in the book.

Would definitely recommend this for anyone who wants a fun, light read.

This Kindle freebie was okay, even good in parts, but had such an absurd start that I never took the rest of the book seriously. The reader is to believe that the small town "good girl" decides that, since she's 31 and wants a baby, it would cause less scandal to go get pregnant by a stranger than use donor sperm. Really?

Some parts of the book are well done, but I never connected with either lead and the abrupt ending didn't help.

Rating: 3.5 stars.

I rarely read Harlequin Superromance, because they tend to bore me. However, after reading too much jerk heroes and stories full of heartache and angst, I needed a detox and was out for a cute and easy read, where the hero did not act like a JERK.

Be careful what you wish for. I was left thirsting for Conner to do a complete 360, because I was getting too bored of his niceness. I know, I'm a little masochist.

Overall I enjoyed this book and it was an easy read.

OK, let's face it, it's not a piece of literature. It's the kind of book where you pretty much know the whole story before you read it. But that's exactly the point. Are you stressed up, in need of something light which won't solicit your brain cells too much ? That's exactly the book for you.
Perfect in audio, Carly Robins has a nice soothing voice, ideal when you have to do your housework or when you're gardening.

I wanted a single parent romance. This was not that.

I really feel like this woman needs to be reported. But I’m not sure who to report her to. And her best “friend” is insane.

They want to lie to this guy because they think he shouldn’t know about her a) trying to get pregnant and b) having his kid. They had no justifiable reason for it, just that she wanted to have a kid by herself. Not that she could support it!

These women made me rationally angry.

Beware.

For myself and apparently quite a few other readers Delaney's method for getting herself pregnant was an issue, of course her lack of foresight for what would happen after the much rhapsodized baby was born is the bigger issue for her and the reader both. Especially when her plan to hook up with a total stranger works, until the man in question is found to have moved to her hometown of Dundee Idaho and all bets are off as the true drama begins.

This story evokes some rocky emotions for me. On the one hand I actually understand the motives behind Delaney's scheme to make her dream of her own baby a reality. On the other hand struggle greatly with the unethical method she uses to accomplish her goal. The ultimate success of her one-night-stand becomes secondary to the upheaval that follows in the wake of her reveal to her friends and family that a heretofore good girl has walked on the wild side with very predictable results.

While this tale does end with an HEA for both Conner and Delaney it does raise some questions about whether or not the path to get there was worth bending some ethics and morals first.

I'm rather late to the Dundee series. This was written 16 years ago and is very dated and simple for today. Delaney wants a baby and there is no guy in sight that will fulfill the wishes of the 30 year old virgin. She meets a guy and all of a sudden he's her baby daddy, although he's never supposed to know and she's not planning on ever looking him up again. Fate has a hand in changing things and they are on the road to parenthood and a little luck on their side, maybe a future together.
The thing that dated this the most for me was one of the characters smoking. You just really don't see that anymore in books. It is a Brenda Novak novel, so it's still worth reading.

I have to confess that I could not finish this. I cannot believe that this girl decided to sucker a man into helping her reach her dreams of having a baby ...without his consent. I just didn't like that at all so no matter how the book progresses, the taint is there. Insert sad face here. I hate not finishing books.

A Baby of Her Own is a story of two people (Connor and Delaney) who are both feeling that they have no where to belong, and are fighting with everything they can to find that place, that family. Delaney has decided that a baby will give her someone guaranteed to love her; Connor believes he can prove himself to his uncles and grandfather with turning the ranch around.

The author gives us a glimpse, with Delaney, into what it was like to feel like she didn't belong anywhere, and as a result, she felt obligated to support everyone in her town because they took her in. In Connor, we see how deeply he has been affected by his, and his mother's roles, in their family, and the abuse under which he has suffered since he was a child.

The author makes it easy for us to want to root for both of them, and then turns Connor into someone we don't know when he realizes what Delaney has done. As his relationship with Delaney progresses, we see his feelings transition from anger to fear, and that fear continues long past the time Delaney's feelings have turned to love. It takes the fear of losing Delaney for Connor to get his head out of his, ahem, well, you know, and decide it was important for him to express his feelings, regardless of his fear of rejection and loss.

We also got a glimpse into the lives of several of the other residents of Dundee, such as Rebecca and Katie, and look I forward to digging deeper into their lives in subsequent books!

I knew, going in, that the central conceit was going to drive me crazy. Delaney is a 30 year old 'spinster' who wants to have a baby and decides to get pregnant by a random guy she picks up in Boise. Of course, he's not just some handsome Hugh Jackman lookalike drifter. No, Conner is a semi-bad-boy going good, and he happens to be heading for Delaney's hometown. So when she discovers that she's pregnant, she's confronted by her fling, who's not too happy to have been used. Subplots revolve around Conner proving himself to his family (but more to himself) as he turns around the family ranch.

There are so many complications - Delaney's the town librarian, she won't be able to support herself when the library shuts down for renovation, the cook at Conner's ranch has to go and help her expecting daughter, Delaney has a pie-baking business on the side, Conner's uncles are evil bullies, etc., etc., etc.

There's lots of small town nosiness driving their relationship and some fun supporting characters. You can see where the next story is going through the obvious telegraphing of Delaney's best friend, Rebecca, and her true love disguised as hate for local boy also made good, Josh. I found the story too cliched and their situation seemed needlessly complicated to stretch it out until the happily ever after.

I was disappointed. I was looking for a great romance without all the extra stuff, it was that...but it just wasn't a good read. The story had so many details but it lacked depth to the characters. Due to the authors writers ability you are able to visualize the setting, but you need more meat on the sandwich. The connection between the two was lacked chemistry. Because the physical connection between the two is not written in the book i felt you should have seen it on an emotional level so the characters could click, that just didn't happened so it feels like you are missing something. The story ends abruptly also. I know its the first in the series and i always give authors second chance on the next books. I have read books by this author quite a bit so hopefully the next book is better.

Wow. I just can't get past what Delaney did. It was unforgivable regardless of her stellar I've never done anything wrong before history. I had a hard time believing this woman was thirty. She was beyond immature. I could rant through this entire review about the morality issues and immaturity of what Delaney did not to mention the reprecusions this act could have and did lead to but I'll move on. I couldn't blame Conner for his anger and resentment toward Delaney although to be honest the man was an idiot too, why would anyone in their right mind take a stranger at their word and have sex without a condom. But moving on I just couldn't figure out why they fell in love. It didn't appear they had any reason to. So the sex was good but they didn't really spend time getting to know each other. This whole story just didn't work for me.

This was part of an inexpensive boxed set. The premise renders the characters unlikeable. A financially challenged, thirty year old woman decides to have unprotected sex with a stranger for the sole purpose of having a child. She lies about who she is, where she's from and birth control. He believes her. Why does the town's 'good girl' do this? Despite having loving people in her life, she feels disconnected, lonely and wants someone to love. Too irresponsible, immature, and manipulative for a believable HEA.
