Vengeance feels good...especially when Roarke the Irish is involved... “I want you to take note, Commander, that turning in my badge would be like cutting off my arm. But if it comes down to a choice between the job and my marriage, then I lose the arm.”

Gotta say, that line surprised me.This would be the first time that I've felt as if Eve and Roarke were on equal footing with regards to their affection for each other. That's not to say that I ever doubted Eve's love for Roarke. Just her ability and willingness to make herself completely vulnerable to him. I "read" the audio and somehow missed marking the quote, but at one point in this book, Roarke is basically pleading with Eve and telling her how her inability to open up to him hurts him. And it just made me ache. I've got to hand it to Eve, however; she does tell him that just because she cannot express herself in words to tell him what he means to her does not mean that she doesn't FEEL all the love that he feels for her. It was a great moment.

Short synopsis: Like the previous books, there is a baddie that Eve needs to find before he kills more people. The big difference here: It is obviously someone from Roarke's past, and in connection with his retribution for the brutal rape and murder of Sommerset's daughter. These murders taking place are truly sadistic and evil, evidenced by Eve's lack of composure a couple of times. Eve and Roarke travel to Ireland...for a funeral, but it was still nice to get to see Roarke in his element. He also has a sort of "Come to Jesus" moment with who he used to be, and it only endears him to the reader more. I flat out love this man. Roarke and Eve:

In the sixth book in the Eve Dallas mysteries, Detective Eve Dallas is hunting a killer who is both a master at evading the authorities by planting false technological evidence, and also is intent on framing Eve’s husband Roarke because of past connections in their life. This one was a bit gory as far as the murder scenes went. The police work and pacing was top notch as always and I particularly love this series for the relationship between Eve and the side characters. We got to learn more about Summerset in this one, which was neat.

Damn, it was intense!
Bloody, creepy, barbarous – perfect reading matter before you fall asleep *mwahahaha* 😈

But Eve fears nothing!

😱Brilliant!😱

Romance: I can’t believe it, but they killed an ex from Roarke… again. Really? Will they kill all hundreds/thousands women, who were unlucky enough to warm his bed?
It’s getting old…

In what book exactly will they hurt Summerset?
Like physically and hard?
Can’t wait to read it…

Inspector Eve Dallas was ready to clock off on time for a change when her life and that of Roarke’s changed dramatically. With a killer out there determined to get to Roarke, and Dallas equally determined to stop him, hers was a race against the clock. And a race against an evil madman with a heart filled with a want for revenge.

Would Eve, Peabody and Roarke manage to stop the killer before he struck again? Before he tore Eve’s life apart?

Vengeance in Death by J.D. Robb is #6 in the In Death series and a re-read for me – brilliant as is the norm; gritty, intense and brutal but oh, so good! Love this series (hence the re-reads) and highly recommend this (and all of them) to lovers of the genre.

Six books in and I'm still not quite sure why my book-boyfriend, Roarke, likes Eve. This woman is so completely rude and horrible to him 99% of the time, that I feel like maybe he's a masochist.

Brian's face broke out in a wide grin as he slapped Roarke on the back. "That's a woman, isn't it?"

"Delicate as a rose, my Eve. Fragile and quiet natured." He grinned himself when he heard her curse, loud and vicious. "A voice like a flute."

I guess it's all about perspective..

And, well, if he likes cursing women, I guess I can appreciate that.

But, I also think Eve is kind of a crappy cop. Once again, she is saved by her husband - who helps her in her investigations these days, as well as usually figuring things out before she does...

On the good side, these books always have a few good and gruesome murders in them. In this one, we have a creepy guy claiming that he is doing God's work by torturing and murdering people from Roarke's past. Yes, God wants you to collect people's eyeballs. He's got a shortage up there. Good job, God's Assistant.

There was also the introduction of a new side-character, McNab, who I hope will stay in the series. He's a tech guy and very colorful. Also, he might have a crush on Eve's sidekick, Peabody, and I've been hoping she meets someone. She may hate McNab now, but hopefully falls for his charms later.

"She doesn't like you, McNab."

"I know." He flashed a grin. "I find that really attractive in a woman."

And, there you have it: the key to any man's heart: disgusted disdain.

aww, I'm sure she doesn't mean that...

I have no idea if this was a one-book thing, but I hope to see more of the McNab/Peabody non-romance play out.

It is quite a few years since I first read this book and I had forgotten just how good it is! Eve and Roarke are still at the very early stages of their relationship and they have a lot of issues to start working out. There are many emotional scenes along the way, but there are also a lot of fun ones. Roarke has the ability to see the humour in Eve's unusual ways and they both have a talent for making funny comments.
Summerset has a major role to play in Vengeance and sometimes it is hard to be sympathetic towards him but things do improve a little as the story progresses.
I always love the way this author brings nearly all of her characters into every book even if they only get a brief mention. Her skill in writing character development is amazing.
So another In Death book that I really loved. (To be honest I am pretty sure I have five starred every one I have read).

I love Roarke and Eve. They just get better and better in every book.

He is an expert with the latest technology...a madman with the mind of a genius and the heart of a killer. He quietly stalks his prey. Then he haunts the police with cryptic riddles about the crimes he is about to commit--always solved moments too late to save his victims' lives.

“I want you to take note, Commander, that turning in my badge would be like cutting off my arm. But if it comes down to a choice between the job and my marriage, then I lose the arm.”

Of course, I loved the whole Irish aspect of it. They even travel to Ireland.

“You’re arrogant, domineering, egotistical, and disdainful of the law.”

He lifted one amused brow. “And your point would be?”

In less than a year, he had broken through her defenses,
unlocked her heart, and most surprising of all, had gained not only her love but her trust.

And he could still annoy her.

"Darling Eve."

"Did you know that when you were talking to your Dublin friend your accent got thicker, the rhythm of your speech changed. And you said aye instead of yes at least twice."

"Did I?" He'd been totally unaware of it, and wasn't sure how that sat with him. "Odd."

"I liked it." The hands she held to his face slid around to link behind his neck. Her body bumped his. "It was ... sexy."

"Was it now?" His hands roamed down, cupped her bottom. "Well, Eve me darling, if you're after ..."
His gaze flicked over her shoulder and the amusement in them deepened. "Good morning Peabody." Eve jerked, then swore when Roarke held her firmly in place. "Lovely day."

I finished Vengeance In Death some days ago but it was a difficult week for me so I couldn't manage to write I review! Thank God things are going better so I took some minutes to write something about the 6th installment in the series...

The past comes always back to haunt us and the killer has set his eyes this time on Roarke and Summerset.
While reading I kept wondering if some actions are justified especially when the law leaves us unprotected and those who caused harm are left unpunished!
Also how important is the environment in which we grow up but also the human will to escape from past misfortunes and become something better!

I won't write much since the series for me continues to be interesting, there's continuity in the character's development and I enjoy very much the banter between Eve and Roarke and love her witt!
In Vengeance In Death she has to make a decision about Roarke and brings into her confidence Dr. Mira and Peabody and throughout the events we see how strong the bond is between Eve and the people she trusts and loves!

Another excellent addition to the In Death series! I enjoy reading it and am totally recommending you to give it a try if you haven’t!

Okay so I am starting to make a small dent in the 40 or so books that are in this series. With each one I read I fall in love a little more with Roarke and Eve....separately and together. Kudos to J.D. Robb for writing two amazing leading characters and for surrounding them with side characters that only make these two better.

In Vengeance in Death it is Roarke's past that triggers the killings that take place. Eve feels the personal hit and for the first time, the love of her career is challenged by the love she has for her husband. She makes her choice and doesn't hesitate for one second.

And it doesn't stop at Roarke. Summerset feels the heat too. Seeing as he and Eve do not see eye to eye things don't go smoothly for either one of them. Something has to give, but at what price.

I've said it before and I most likely will say it 40 more times. I LOVE the way that Roarke loves Eve. His words, his touches, his smiles just melt my heart every single time.

Another favorite of mine in this series. ❤ ❤

5 Real Roarke/Eve Love Stars
* * * * Spoiler Free
I can say Spoiler Free because I have already announced my undying love for these books, hahahahahhahahahahahahaha. Seriously, though, J.D. Robb AKA Nora Roberts took her imagination in 1095 with the first entry of this series and placed this couple in 2058.

In 1995, I can't remember if the computer was actually as advanced...there were rumblings of what was to come...but nothing could have prepared Ms. Roberts to have the type of insight she shows throughout these books. I think my reading them now, in 2019/2020 makes it easier to identify with all that is happening in her future.

In this entry, the love Eve has for Roarke is tested to the point where she actually has to say out loud how devoted she is to this marriage. It shakes her but at the same time frees her, I think.

Her love for Roarke and who he is and was is the center of this story.
We see her grapple with the rules of law and the need for justice when the law lets everyone down. We also have Roarke go through a moment where he is confronted with his past and how he is able to release it.

The Murder/Mystery element was solid and only towards the end did I see where it was going.

I love the way these books come together...I only have one little pet peeve...J.D. Robb ends them so abruptly. I am used to epilogues and so it has taken me a bit to adjust. But by this tactic, you are guaranteed the overwhelming desire or should I say compulsion to go right away and click click the next book...

Oh, Ms. Robb, you are a cunning one...

~~~~~ Before Reading ~~~~~
Happy Holidays to Me!
I'll never, ever get tired of reading this series! I love Roarke & Eve so freaking much. :)
"If Times Square intimidates you," Roarke began, "perhaps you could practice the naked dancing at home."
"Oh, bite me."
"Darling, I'd love to, but you're on duty."
"Get in the goddamn car." She jerked a thumb at Peabody, who was currently doing her best to pretend she was deaf and blind.
"Please, Eve, these public displays of affection must stop. I have a reputation."
"Keep it up, ace, and I'll give you a public display of affection that'll have you limping for a week."
"Now I'm excited." Smiling, Roarke opened the front passenger door.
Lieutenant Eve Dallas is more than a little irritated when she receives a call from a madman who taunts her with riddles and clues about a murder he is about to commit. Sadly Eve and her team are to late in piecing the clues together to save the murdered victim.
When another victim is found it seems they are not connected to one another, but as Eve investigates further she discovers that her husband, Roarke has ties to the victim. Eve knows time is running out and she must find the murderer before Roarke becomes the next victim.
Vengeance in Death is the sixth book in the In Death series by J.D Robb. Once again this author has written another outstanding book that leaves her readers wanting more. Highly recommended.
A re-read for me. Loved it - hadn't really remembered it. One niggle - JD/Nora - stop with the Irish stereotypes please ☘️ ... a bit annoying for an Irish person - not everyone in Ireland has red hair and pale skin, there usually isn't the smell of boiled cabbage 🥬 permeating the streets, we do like a drink but so do lots of other nationalities 🥃- it is not our national pastime, no matter what people think 😏
Summerset - I wonder will he and Eve ever "get on"? He definitely has a poker up his arse and he doesn't think Eve is good enough for Roarke.
"Lieutenant," he said, as if the word was ever so slightly distasteful to his palette. "Can I help you?"
Eve and Roarke have their ups and downs. They argue. I love them ... ❤️❤️
We are introduced to McNab.
"You Irish, McNab?"
She caught the slight flare of insult flicker over his pretty face.
"I'm a Scotsman, Lieutenant. My grandfather was a Highlander."
“You’re arrogant, domineering, egotistical, and disdainful of the law.”
He lifted one amused brow. “And your point would be?”
4 stars.🌟🌟🌟🌟
6th book in this spellbinding and truly addictive series .
I have been super-jonesing lately for another dose of Eve and Roarke💕, this book really hit the spot for me in that respect even if the mystery itself is possibly my least favorite so far (still a solid 4 star read).
In this one we get to learn more about Roarke's childhood in Ireland and his close friendship with Summerset - all really good stuff.
Borrowed this ebook from my library - and I am happy to be moving right on to the next one (Holiday in Death).
This series keeps getting better and better.  This one's pretty disturbing with me being Catholic.  My stomach's not that hard after all with the mutilation and disembowelment of body parts *shudders* But what can I say? I am hooked with this series.
We have a murderer who calls himself the "the wrath of God".  An avenging angel who thinks he has been called on to do his work.  He gives  riddles to Eve as to who and where she can find the victim.  If she can save the person.  Let the games begin.
I was on the edge of my seat on this one.  Holding my breathe on what's gonna happen next.  I know to some Eve may come across as bitchy and cold because she doesn't really show her real emotions but man, she's one badass cop.  She's brave, courageous, tenacious and a smart ass with a smart mouth to boot. "I want you to take note, Commander, that turning in my badge would be like cutting off my arm.  But if it comes down to a choice between the job and my marriage, then I lose the arm."
We have moments with her and Roarke.
"Eve." He laid a hand on her cheek.  "From the first moment I met you, every other woman paled for me." "You're all.  You're only."  *swoon to the highest level*
" You had no f*cking right to risk yourself on my behalf". Roarke
"Oh really.  Is that so? You keep looking at me dead in the eye and you tell me you wouldn't have done the same if it was me". Eve
That's entirely different."  Roarke
"Because you have a penis?"  Eve.  I love this comeback so much. LOL
And loving Peabody with each installment.  Their banter is hilarious.
"Any hot plans for the weekend, Peabody?"
" My usual, flicking off men like flies, breaking hearts, crushing souls."
We also have a new character in this one.  Ian McNab.  He sounds interesting.
I just now realized why this series has 43 books and ongoing because it is that good.  The writing is solid and with characters you can't help but love.  😁
Eve Dallas has her hands full when a tech savvy religious madman starts killing people in a slow torturous manner. When it becomes clear that the victims have a link to Roarke and Summerset's past she knows she must hunt down the killer before he can kill again.
This series is developing really well. Eve and Roarke have been married for a few months now and their relationship is still evolving. Eve still finds it hard to accept that this sexy, handsome man can love her and Roarke is frustrated that Eve has trouble opening up to him and expressing her feelings. She finds the role of tough cop a lot easier to carry off than sensitive lover, but with Roarke's help she's learning to let her emotions and love for him show. Eve's relationship with Summerset is just as prickly as ever but she finds out a lot more about him in this novel and starts to get an understanding of what's made him the way he is. Peabody is also emerging as a delightful character, tough but fun and feisty with a love of luxury despite her free age upbringing. She also finds herself competing with a new character, McNabb on loan to Eve from the tech unit, fashion conscious and trendy, he likes to annoy Peabody while at the same time admiring her physical attributes. Another excellent episode in this excellent series!
Another strong addition to a series that has me hooked.
In this book, Eve is faced with a particularly driven, sadistic and brutal killer, one who is eager for vengeance, and who has his sights set on destroying Roarke and people/friends from Roarke’s past, so we see a very determined Eve, racing against the clock to catch the killer before he can strike again, and before Roarke can get his hands on him or vice versa. Eve has always valued the law more than anything else in her life so it's interesting to see her in a position where she is uncovering more of the unsavoury side of Roarke's history – although I do feel more angst and critical reflection would have occurred for Eve than was depicted, as Roarke’s bloody past is revealed.
In this book again its Eve and Roarke, as well as their interactions with secondary characters such as Peabody that kept me engaged and made the book for me. I also really enjoyed that in this book we get to delve further into Roarke's past and his close bond to Summerset.
It took six novels, but I've finally finished the first *really good* Eve Dallas novel.
This is the one about a madman killing Irish people because God is telling him to. As Eve digs into how the victims are connected, it turns out every one of them knew Roarke's uppity butler Somerset back when he still lived in Dublin - and by extension, they all knew Roarke. This leads us to finally get a bit more history on Roarke, including a visit to Dublin.
Vengeance seemed to move faster than earlier novels, with the first murder occurring right away. Peabody's zingers are improving, and she's getting better at anticipating Dallas. Mavis only made one appearance, and her visit was mercifully short. Unfortunately, she was replaced with a different annoying character named McNabb, some sort of police computer whiz.
Yep, this is my favorite one so far. On the other hand, there are, like 60 books in the series so I've got a long way to go.
This series just keeps getting better and better, in Vengeance in Death Eve is faced with a particularly sadistic and brutal killer and it's even more personal than ever when he is going after targets from Roarke's past. Eve has always valued the law more than anything else in her life so it's really interesting to see her in a position where she is uncovering more of the unsavoury side of Roarke's history and she has to decide whether she loves him enough to look past the things he did as a younger man.
I always love learning more about Roarke's background, we've known for a long time that he crossed lines in the past and he will happily cross them again in the future if that's what it takes to protect the people he cares for. Eve is so by the book that that side of him should make her uncomfortable but at the same time she has experienced the worst kind of evil and I think she takes comfort in the fact that whatever Roarke has done it's always been done for a reason. It does irritate me that he's still keeping so many secrets but I'm enjoying seeing them both slowly open up about their backgrounds and it's not like Eve has always been an open book either. Their relationship is definitely only getting stronger over time.
I really enjoyed the addition of McNab's character and hope he's going to be a new cast regular, he's a lot of fun and the banter between him and Peabody was hilarious. I think there's a bit of a spark there but we'll have to wait and see if it turns into something or not. It was also fun to see Summerset in the hot seat when it looks like he could be the murderer, I've never liked the way he treats Eve so it was good to see him sweat knowing that she's the one person who stands a chance at proving his innocence. I hope we'll see him start to be a little nicer to her now but I'm not holding my breath on that one.
I realised recently that even if I read one In Death book a month it's still going to take me about 4 years to catch up with this series (and that's not even counting the extra novellas and short stories available!) but I love these characters so much that I'm going to make a concerted effort to do just that. I'm not very good at binging books one after the other or I could catch up faster but I think one a month is more realistic. We'll see how long I can actually keep it up for but keep your fingers crossed for me!
This was an incredibly exciting installment! There is a killer on the loose and he seems to be playing games with Eve. He gives her just enough hints to keep her in the game but he always seems to be one step ahead of her. The fact that the victims seem to be connected to Roarke and Summerset is her number one suspect only adds to the suspense. The mystery kept me guessing until the very end and I was satisfied by how the story drew to a conclusion.
Susan Ericksen did a phenomenal job with the narration. I really enjoy the consistency that she has brought to the series and the voices and accents that she uses for the characters adds a lot to the reading. I definitely recommend this series to others who are looking for an engaging mystery. The mystery in this book was top-notch and the characters were incredibly well-done. I cannot wait to read more of this fantastic series!
This is probably the 3rd or 4th time I've read this one. It is definitely in the top 10 of the In Death series and probably one of the meatiest of the stories. We get a lot of Roarke's past exposed and show more of his vulnerability. I like those much more. A lot of scenes with him just show him as a sort of elite superman, I like it better when I see inside him.
*****************************************************************************
Hadn't read this one in some time - definitely the first time I listened to the audiobook version. (Susan Ericksen does a tremendous job of narrating this series!)
This was another stellar entry in this series. Re-reading the first books really does contrast with latest books in the series. These are definitely much better. More passionate scenes. More laugh out loud sections. Even the mysteries are better.
A sidenote. The more I read these books and the descriptions of life in 2050-2060 New York City - the more I think that some of the social and legal policies make a lot of sense. A salary for moms to stay at home and just be moms. Licensed Companions - registered, taxed, regulated, etc. Makes sense to me.
Ah çok iyiydi. Cinayetleri çok güzel bağlamış, Roarke ve Summerset'in geçmişlerine iyice iniyoruz. Hatta İrlanda'ya gidip Roarke'un anılarını dinliyoruz. Eve yine birkaç kere ölümden dönüyor ve en sonunda gelip onu kurtaran ve katili öldüren Roarke oluyor. Bu adamın Eve aşkına özeniyorum cidden, Eve de ona deli gibi aşık. Bu çifti daha bir sürü macera bekliyor ama aralarındaki aşkla her şeyi halledeceklerdir. Yaklaşık bir 30 kitap daha var okunacak :P
I adore GR and my GR friends
description/
Eve Dallas went too far in the last book. It struck a nerve and I wasn’t sure when I was going to continue with the series. BUT my awesome GR friends encouraged me and told me that Eve kinda mellows out.
I’m so glad I listened because this one was amazing. I even got a tour of Roarke’s homeland. Eve’s edge was there, but she wasn’t being a butthole.
On to the next!
This was my most favorite in the series by far. I laughed like, a lot, even when it was totally inappropriate- obviously, it's me we're talking about. I don't smile much but I like to laugh. And did I say I'd do no more than beg to have Roarke as a husband? Well, I amend my statement- I would add one more please in my begging process.
And sweet God, let Summerset not be such an uptight ass from now on when she literally put her life at stake to save him. I don't like the way he is with Eve, even knowing why he is that way because that's a pathetic excuse. I have this full internal monologue of what I would say to him of I ever had the chance to- it's not pretty but it's really explanatory.
Eff me, how the hell did I forget to mention that we saw a glimpse of Roarke's childhood? It was amazing and I hope we get even more in the subsequent books. We get a lot of him in this one and the previous one but I want all of the journey of how he became what he is- I am greedy.
Also it should be duly noted that Peabody is my favorite character and I hope she and McNab become a couple, like enemies to lovers kinda thing. *Sigh*
Vengeance in Death
(In Death # 6)
by J.D. Robb
Romantic Suspense
VENGEANCE IN DEATH is ice, frigid. Or as the eccentric Mavis would say, mag. I think this book just topped my previous favourite, RAPTURE IN DEATH. There were so many good things about this book that I’m not sure where to start. First off, the case that Lieutenant Dallas has been dealt is a gruesome one. It hits a little closer to home because of the violation that these victims have endured and it all seems to lead to Roarke’s past.
As you know, Roarke hasn’t always been the polished and powerful businessman he is now. Once, long ago, he was a just a kid in Dublin trying to make ends meet that likely got his hands dirty. It was his acts in Dublin years ago that seem to anger someone enough to push them into a killing spree.
This book is much more gritty and bloody than the previous books and I loved every moment of it. It always showcases a lot of Dublin, the place where Roarke is from. I loved reading the little bouts here and there were his Irish brogue revealed itself. It was sexy.
There’s also the introduction of Ian McNab from the EDD who has come in to assist Eve in this case. With his colourful choice of clothing and his flashing earrings and smart mouth, McNab has easily become one of my favourite characters! I am hoping for more appearances from him in future books. I see something between him and Peabody, whether its attraction or irritation, I don’t know yet, but I LIKE IT!
