Wow! Gen Ching brought something wonderful and refreshing to the table with Weaving Destiny! After reading The Soulkeepers, I wasn't sure how the sequel would play out. To my surprise I loved it! The novel went smooth and was a well worded, fast paced read.
As the characters from the previous book are still around, we are introduced to a couple more people in this book and we also get to meet a few more that we didn't get around to spending time with in the first book. You will love to hate some of them and hate to love some. Gen created a world right out of hell so perfect that it is seriously on FIRE!
While the gang is loving to hate one another, the Soulkeepers fight to keep the humans' souls safe from the Watchers, they are also learning to use their powers; at least the individuals that have powers that is.. for the ones that don't -- they are still trying to figure that out.
But for now, big trouble is brewing in Paris, Illinois, because Lucifer is preparing a battle to bring the Soulkeepers down and only one of them can stop him. The trouble is that person doesn't know it yet.
If you haven't read this series yet, I'm telling you.. do it! You won't be sorry.

The addition of a new Soulkeeper, who is both fierce and beautiful with a very desirable ability, adds an exciting new dynamic to this story. And with a whole host of new paranormal beings, a love story that is put to the test, and an even deadlier enemy, this installment is nothing short of electrifying.
Several months have passed since the events that took place at the end of the first book in the series, and Malini is no closer to figuring out just what she is. But as the danger from the Watchers grows closer and closer to Paris, Illinois, her friends and family, Malini is becoming more desperate, frustrated and frightened. If she can’t help protect those she loves, what good is she?
But when she learns just what it is that she could be and the powers that she might someday possess, the cost may be too high. The last two people who attempted the journey that she would have to embark upon failed – one ended up in an insane asylum, the other ended up dead.

Once again, Author G.P. Ching has written an incredibly exciting story that will immediately grab readers with an introductory chapter that adds mystery and tension. And with writing that paints such a vivid picture, the story will continue to keep them engrossed until the very end.
Everything flows just as beautifully as it did in the first book in this series. But several new additions to this sequel, including the Soulkeeper, Mara Kane, a handsome new character named Henry, and several new deadly enemies, give this story a very different feel.
Weaving Destiny is absolutely a must-read for those who enjoy beautifully-written, captivating paranormal stories with unique characters and abilities, action, adventure, danger, heartbreak and an ending that will leave you wanting more, but not hanging off a cliff.
It is not absolutely necessary to read the first book in the series in order to read this one, but it is highly recommended to get a better understanding of the characters and their situation.

On a personal note:
I was surprised by The Soulkeepers, but I was blown away by Weaving Destiny. Completely and totally blown away. At one point toward the end I even got chills and that doesn’t happen to me very often.
I tried to set my expectations low for this book so that I wouldn’t be terribly disappointed if it didn’t live up to its predecessor. Believe it or not, but just because one book by an author is off-the-menu doesn’t mean they all will be.
But I wasn’t really successful. I expected a lot from this sequel. I knew the author was a brilliant writer, so I did expect her to deliver that level of writing in this second book. I just hoped that the story would be just as engaging as the first.
And with the book switching focus to a different character, I was worried. I am one of those readers that grow attached to one character and generally prefer them to remain the focal point throughout the entire series.
Well, I had no reason to be worried. As this was told in third person, I wasn’t limited to only seeing the story from Malini’s perspective. And it’s not as if Jacob was left out. Not one bit. He did not get relegated to the background.
While it was ultimately Malini’s story, Jacob was such a huge part of this book. And it wasn’t just about Malini’s quest. Jacob had his own journey.
Well, none of my fears were realized. This book was fan-freaking-tastic. It had all that good stuff from book one – the great intro, an exciting adventure, some pretty cool abilities and a love story – but it had way, way, way more.
I mentioned the first book had moments of humor. Well there were a lot more moments in this book. Along with a nice heap of sarcasm thrown in thanks to Mara Kane. There was also more action, more adventure, more bad guys, more “ick” moments, more twists, and some pretty interesting new characters. And while I can’t say too much, I will say there is definitely something that happens that is totally creeptacular.
I did not expect Malini’s journey to take her where it did. I did not expect Henry. And I didn’t expect a certain ability that one of the characters had in the story.
How this author managed to pack all that she did into this book, which is significantly shorter than the first according to Amazon’s page count, and not make it feel overcrowded or confusing, I’ll never know.
What I do know is this – I absolutely loved this book. I plan on reading it again. Soon. I love the new direction this story took, while still managing to retain its original focus. I love the new characters. And I love the added “ick” factor that had me skeeved out on more than one occasion during the read.
This was such an unbelievably entertaining one-sit-read. I highly recommend this series and cannot wait for the third book to be released this winter.

This was every bit as good as the first in the series, if not better. The plot offered plenty of surprises, believable character interactions and growth, and some wonderful visual imagery. Once again the author doesn’t shirk away from the tough issues as Melani battles with finding and coming to terms with her place in the world of Soulkeepers and watchers. Self sacrifice and mercy killing are a couple that spring to mind. Her father’s journey to understanding his teenager and her coming to understand him also adds another dimension to the story. I’m really glad I came across this series.

I rarely buy books. Honestly, I can't finance my reading habit. Due to this, I get 99% of my books from the library. I was in-between library visits and out of reading material when I decided I would find a free e-book on Amazon. This is when I picked up the first book from the Soulkeepers series. Long story short, now I'm addicted and it looks like I'm going to have to keep paying for the books since my library doesn't have them.
The good news is that Weaving Destiny was definitely worth it. It was every bit as fun as its predecessor. I loved the changing POVs between Jacob and Malini. The story line is definitely getting more intense and more characters are being introduced.
I really like G.P. Ching's writing style. I feel like a lot of YA fantasy novels are overly wordy and could definitely use some cropping, but I definitely didn't feel this way with Weaving Destiny. I was absolutely shocked when I finished the book. It was so smooth and the story flowed so well.
As another reviewer mentioned, I am also surprised that this series isn't more popular! If you are a fan of YA fantasy, I definitely recommend giving this series a try...make sure to start with #1 though.
Now since I HATE unannounced spoilers. Here are some of my thoughts while reading the book that may result in giving plot points away:

She really is super powerful and considering she can summon zombies, readers are left with a feeling that something even bigger than what happens in this book is just beyond the horizon.

the end of this book came way too soon. seriously, I'm reading and all the sudden its over.
what to say... let me start with the characters. I definitely liked the introduction of Mara,but when she kissed Jake I started to hate her, but then she died and I lover her again. I'm sorry she died. anothercharacter I liked a lot was Death himself. unfortunately I dontsee him re appearing in book three. his story seems over, but I.liked it while it lasted. Dane also found a spot in my heart. he may even be moving up on my list of best 'reformer's characters. we'll see. I hope they rescuehim soon. I would have enjoyed less Lillian and Katrina, but more of Dr Silva and Gideon. their relationship seems to be hanging by a thread and I truly hope it gets better.
ablnother thing I Wang to touch upon is the dire situation. twelve soulkeepers left. the first book doesn't give you the impression they werethat endangered so it came as a sort of shock. I want to save the soulkeepers! just a side note I would like to say that Malini has a creaky arm.
anyways,I cant wait for book three. it should bring in plenty of new characters and re-open the school in Eden(exciting!) if anyone knows when it is set to be released please tell me!

I loved this book a lot. My favorite part was Malini's fhree day spirit journey in the in between. My second favorite part was when she got her healing hand and her death hand. It was a joy to experience the twists and turns Weaving Destiny had for it's readers. I would recommend this book to everyone.

I almost put this book down in the first 30 pages. It had more of the drivel from the first book and I was still really unconnected with the characters.
But, I stuck it out because it's YA and it's short. It was a decent book with a nice plot. I like the imagery and that it's DIFFERENT in terms of it's end of days problems. But, there were entire sections of the plot that felt forced and, worse, really predictable.
I'll probably stick around for book 3 because I'm a little curious where it's going, but it won't be first on my TBR shelf.

Weaving Destiny was a great book, its genres are fantasy and action. This book is based on a character named Malini. Malini just found out that she is a healer and that is this most powerful Soulkeeper of all. She can heal every human disease but can kill any human being with just one hand that she has to place on them. Malini has a boyfriend named Jacob who is also a Soulkeeper. The main quest of this book is to stop Lucifer and his watchers. I would recommend this book for only the people that are interested in fantasy and action.

Every bit as good as the first in the series. It is well written, flows well and is fast paced. Some great character development and surprises await among the pages.
They won the battle but not the war so there is more to come in the future of this series.

The book is entertaining and in my case kept me reading till the end, even though not with the same excitement I experience with other books. It builds an interesting world, but had too rate it only with three stars because it really gets to the edge of teen drama.

This was an amazing second book to his series! I felt like the characters who may not have had a say in the first book was able to shine here. The plot is thickening, and I can't wait!
Also biased because Henry is introduced here, and he's my favorite character in this series ;)

What a ride! I’m truly enjoying this series. I definitely wasn’t expecting so many of the things that happened. Definitely kept me on my toes. It’s a very different story for me. I’d have read it faster if life didn’t interrupt reading.

As soon as I finished the first book, I started right in on this one. I had to know what was was to happen. It is a great book as well. Now, I'm off to start book 3.

It's always a risky move to change up your protagonists part way through a series... at least for this reader. In this book, Jacob steps aside so that Malini can take the main role and for me, it just didn't work.
The problem is that I just spent a book growing attached to Jacob's story, sympathising with him, and rooting for him as a protagonist. As much as I liked Malini in the first novel, she wasn't a character that I loved so much that I wanted to hear more of her story over Jacob's. It wouldn't have been so jarring had they maybe shared the protagonist role equally. Instead, Malini is put in pride of place and it feels like she's there to stay from how she is set up.
Imagine if they made an Indiana Jones movie after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where Henry Jones Sr is the protagonist and Indiana Jones was the supporting character. As awesome as Sean Connery was in the role, we went to the cinema to see Indiana Jones and we would feel gutted if we instead got someone else's story. That's kind of how I felt here.
Now it could be argued that this is an ensemble novel with an equal cast. But, considering not all the characters get an equal amount of focus, it doesn't feel that way. Also, considering the way Malini's story unfolds in this book, it feels like she is going to be the primary protagonist in this series going forward.
Basically, it has all left a sour taste in my mouth. I still enjoyed the book for what it was, but I feel like I've been given a free trial sample to get me hooked, but now that I'm invested they've pulled a switch and I get something different. Not cool, and definitely a let down for me.
Beyond this, there's also another issue that bugged me. The teen angsty romance trope rears its ugly head here. I won't say too much because it would be filled with spoilers, but let me just say that the relationship drama is obvious, annoying and cliched. I knew exactly how it was going to turn out as soon as it reared its ugly head which meant you could write off a large portion of this book as a waste of time as it was a story that didn't need to be told.
God, it feels like I'm hating on this book. I guess I kind of am, and it's because I'm frustrated. But I find that I'm usually the most frustrated with things that I like enough to want to be good, and that's the same here. It's an enjoyable book, by and large, there are just these few glaring issues that hold me back from really loving this series.
I have high hopes for future books, but this one didn't quite do it for me. It's a 3-star outing for this one, but I am sure there are higher marks to come.
The problem is that I just spent a book growing attached to Jacob's story, sympathising with him, and rooting for him as a protagonist. As much as I liked Malini in the first novel, she wasn't a character that I loved so much that I wanted to hear more of her story over Jacob's. It wouldn't have been so jarring had they maybe shared the protagonist role equally. Instead, Malini is put in pride of place and it feels like she's there to stay from how she is set up.
Imagine if they made an Indiana Jones movie after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where Henry Jones Sr is the protagonist and Indiana Jones was the supporting character. As awesome as Sean Connery was in the role, we went to the cinema to see Indiana Jones and we would feel gutted if we instead got someone else's story. That's kind of how I felt here.
Now it could be argued that this is an ensemble novel with an equal cast. But, considering not all the characters get an equal amount of focus, it doesn't feel that way. Also, considering the way Malini's story unfolds in this book, it feels like she is going to be the primary protagonist in this series going forward.

I loved this book even more than the first in the series, The Soulkeepers, which is saying something because I really loved that one too. The second volume in The Soulkeepers series continues the original, epically written, and fast paced saga that G.P Ching began in The Soulkeepers. With an impending showdown against fallen angels, new friends and foes alike, zombies, prom dates with Death, and startling new discoveries, Weaving Destiny is an action packed, emotionally charged ride start to finish.
Weaving Destiny picks up a few months after the first book, and finds Jacob, his mother, Malini, Dr. Silva, and Gideon still searching for more information about the Soulkeepers and the Watchers. With a rash of killings and disappearances believed to be the work of evil Watchers, the group set out to stop and discover their enemies’ plans. Mara, another teenage Soulkeeper, joins the group and causes friction between Jacob and Malini. Throughout the book, our main characters find as many new questions as they do answers, and they must not only battle with their enemies, but with themselves as well.
I read this book in one setting simply because I could not put it down and I had to keep turning pages to find out what happened next. The fresh, original, and enthralling elements of the first book are still there in Weaving Destiny, but there’s also more emotional and psychological elements that give the story real depth and has the allowed the main characters, Jacob and Malini especially, to grow and evolve a great deal. Even with all the paranormal and fantasy elements, Ching never loses her characters or their realness. The overall storyline develops at a fast pace, but its never overwhelming. The pacing feels and reads very organic.
We discover, explore and learn more about the magical world of the Soulkeepers in this book, and Ching continues to impress me with her ability to both modernize very traditional stories and myths, and to add new, exciting layers and twists to them. There were a few twists and discoveries that I never saw coming and found myself perfectly captivated by them.
I liked how this book focuses a great deal on Malini’s character and figuring out just what she is and how she fits in the world of the Soulkeepers. I won’t spoil anything for you, but Malini’s personal and magical journey was, at times, both heart stopping and heart breaking. Despite the focus on Malini, Jacob’s character isn’t ignored in this book. Jacob contends with his own struggles, both as a Soulkeeper and as a teenager. Malini and Jacob’s stories are very much intertwined and they, and readers alike, have to figure out just what that means.
Being introduced to new characters in a series isn’t always an easy thing to adjust to. Sometimes, as readers, we may feel like new characters take time and attention away from already beloved characters that we’ve grown attached to. So, I wasn’t sure about the character of Mara at first. I was afraid that she was going to be used simply as a way to come between Jacob and Malini. But I quickly came to really like the feisty girl. Her character is well developed and serves her own, integral purpose to the storyline.
Weaving Destiny had me on the edge of my seat and breathless from beginning to end. The storyline continues to be creative, original, and captivating. I cannot wait to read the third book. You really must read this book!

What an exciting sequel to The Soulkeepers by G. P. Ching! While I loved book one, I devoured book two and could not put it down. It has lots of action, sizzling chemistry, and twists I totally didn’t expect.
In book one, The Soulkeepers, we were introduced to the world of soulkeepers and watchers – the ages old war of good vs. evil. The sequel starts off with Jacob, a soulkeeper, coming into his powers while Malini, his girlfriend, feels left out. Besides sniffing out Watchers, she has no powers. She isn’t even sure she will ever get powers since Dr. Silva, their mentor, isn’t working with her anymore and has stopped their training sessions. When the small group is called on to check out a mysterious death witnessed by a new girl, Mara, Malini tags along, but feels useless. What good does it do to know that a bad guy is there and not have the power to do something about it? Jacob feels it’s his responsibility to protect Malini at all costs. At the same time they’re trying to figure out why people are mysteriously disappearing, Jacob’s cousin has come home for a college break and she’s just acting weird, weird, weird. She’s usually mean but she’s much worse this time around. Things escalate quickly and when Jacob’s life is threatened the group realizes a Watcher is already among them.
As if Jacob and Malini sneaking around to be together and trying to save the world isn’t stressful enough, Malini feels Jacob’s strong attraction to the new girl. With Weaving Destiny, G.P. Ching serves up a fascinating story that is equal parts action, excitement and emotional baggage.
Jacob and Malini’s relationship undergoes a change, and I must say that it makes me love them even more. I am not going to give away the details, but let’s just say that the dynamics change. They do a lot of growing throughout Weaving Destiny; both together and separately. Malini especially begins to have more of an identity outside of their relationship and it is really nice to see her in the spotlight.
There is also a new Soulkeeper in town. Mara is a teenage girl from Chicago that has had an extremely rough go of it. She is definitely jaded and she adds an interesting dynamic to the story. I was afraid that she would simply become a plot device used to cause friction between Malini and Jacob, but as the story progressed she began to come into her own. I will not deny it, I was quick to judge her, but she certainly grows on you. She undoubtedly stepped into a difficult role; I cannot imagine anyone will take too kindly to someone who comes between Jacob and Malini. However, Ching did give her an awesome story arc. Out of all the plotlines in the series so far, I am most excited to see hers develop.
Weaving Destiny, much like its predecessor is filled to the brim with action and excitement. Ching certainly has some new tricks up her sleeve to keep things interesting, including zombies, dates with Death and a side trip to Eden. I can only imagine what Ching has in store for us in book three.
The ending certainly snuck up on me; I did not expect it to end so quickly. I was so engrossed in the storyline that I was not paying any sort of attention to the page numbers. And I must admit, I am dying to know what happens next.

Compared to the first book, Weaving Destiny is definitely an evolution. I always felt like there was one unidentifiable, gnawing thing missing from the first, but it is rectified in Weaving Destiny. The writing is much better, the story-telling even more intricate and clever, and the characters seem even more realistic and likable.
This volume focuses on Malini Gupta, the title character, Jacob Lau's, girlfriend. I always liked Malini from book one, but I really didn't get the chance to come to love her as much as I do now, after getting inside her head and heart. What a neat girl she is! She has so much thrust upon her and simply doesn't feel like all the other Soulkeepers, that she's ready to do battle. She's not. It's a feeling so easy to relate to because, who would feel ready for that kind of life, being a normal person?
One of the pervasive themes of the story, I suppose for the entire series—but here it's really upfront—is the concept of 'destiny.' Obviously, its title is appropriate, because Malini begins the story believing, like so many young people do (I know I did!), that destiny is made for you by some cosmic force in the universe, and no one can do anything about it. We have to hope for the best and that's that.
But, what inevitably comes with age, maturity, and life experience is what Malini discovers through her trials: that she is, in fact, subject to destiny, but she is, in fact, the weaver of that destiny. I love how this theme is interwoven throughout, and her understanding of this concept is gradually obtained. She realizes she always had the power to shape her own future, and that pertains to everyone who's reading about her, too.
Read this if you want a sophisticated story with complex, real-world themes wrapped up in beautiful fantasy elements that is sure to entertain you. Think of it as the most delicious, wholesome, home-cooked meal prepared for you by a seasoned expert: savory, satisfying, and nourishing all at the same time.

"Weaving Destiny" asks the age old question, 'Do you believe in destiny?' In the beginning of our story, Jacob's cousin Katrina is attending a college party where she is drinking too much. She meets a man, Cord who she cannot seem to resist. He gets her another drink and soon she is dizzy. He offers to walk her home and the next morning she awakens lying on the grass with her roommate hovering over her. She is scheduled to go home to Paris, the next day.
Back in Paris, Malini's father has placed her on a 6 month punishment and forbid her from seeing Jacob. So, they come up with creative ways to see each other. They work together at the florist shop and he sneaks into her room at night. The prom is coming up in a month and a half and Malini is trying to figure out how she will be able to get her father to let Jacob take her.
There is a new girl in town, Mara. She is also a soulkeeper. She has come to town on Dr. Silva's invitation to assist in protecting Jacob. It seems that when cousin Katrina came home for spring break, she managed to sneak into Jacob's room and tried to stab him. Good thing her had snuck over at Malini's house. Malini is depressed because she has seen no talents that would indicate she is a soulkeeper. She runs across Dane and confides her vulnerabiltiy to him. It doesn't help that Malini recognizes that Mara is attracted to Jacob leaving her feeling insecure. It does not matter how much Jacob reassures her, she just feels inadequate.
The question is are Jacob and Malini really meant for one another or will they have to go their separate ways in order to survive what is coming. They will both be tested in ways they never imagined and in the end someone will die. I enjoyed this second book in the series especially the addition of new characters. Jacob's mother has a greater role to play, we get a better understanding of Malini's relationship with her parents and Dane provides an interesting influence in the story. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
