Ooo this was a little more than I anticipated! I think that there is a definite writing/plot pattern that’s beginning to take shape in the volume and I’m wondering if it will impact my enjoyment of the series. Overall, it’s cute. A little simplistic in it’s conflict resolution but it still works for the moment.

this volume focused more on developing both mei's personality n her relationships, especially with yamoto . i rly loved the beach trip !
also, throughout the story, it keeps getting clear how she uses her bluntness n the observation skill she picked up from constantly being in the back of the room watching the scene rather than truly being part of it, that mei helps people yamato's brought from his social network.

3,5/5

This book is earning it's OT Ages 16+ rating with an overnight trip (who lets four 16 year olds take a trip to the beach and stay at a hotel alone? Am I just old?) and some sexy times with Aiko and the newly introduced Hayakawa. A pattern is emerging in this series where the main character Mei Tachibana uses her blunt unsocial skills to help the people, who generally hate her, brought into her life by her popular boyfriend Yamato Kurosawa realize what they need to change to be happy. She helped her old bully Nakanishi change his behavior so Asami would be his girlfriend last book, now she's helping Hayakawa recognize that his serial one night stands (also in hotels, apparently high school students can rent hotel rooms in Japan) just to hear people say I love you and make himself feel better about his crappy home life are no substitute for the real love of a steady girlfriend in the form of his caring childhood friend who was always his refuge from insulting parents. We also get the background story of Aiko who changed herself entirely to be with boys and still wants Yamato who regrets losing his virginity to her. I will say that at least the main characters are waiting for their relationship to develop rather than just jumping into sex.

3⭐️ Just as the first one I really enjoyed this, even tho it was a little confusing at times. It’s just fun and fast paced. I usually read these at the same time as other books and just pick them up when I’m to tired to focus.

Less fast paced than vol.1 starting to see some character development with Mei, Aiko, and Yamato.
I feel bad for Aiko, even though she's the "mean girl" 🫣

I had to read the second book from this series in order to see if it was worth going through with the whole thing. I don't think so. The second book is definitely better than the first, but I can't stand how fake the main character's relationship seems.

This book didn't really mull over the main couple's relationship so much. It actually focused on two other characters who had real problems. Though I have to admit, the sexual graphics of this book caught me a bit off guard. This is a series I'm assuming younger girls are reading and the sex in this book was kind of in your face. I have no problem with sex in books, but I was just surprised based on the demographic of people who read this stuff, and especially so that it's drawn out for young girls to see.

But this book dealt with more realistic issues and I was glad for at least that much. I don't know if I'll continue this series or not, maybe I'll just read it in the bookstore in my free time, but I don't think it's worth buying if you are more interested in a less cutesy/fake romance.

I'm liking this one more in volume 2. I really like Mei in this volume. You really get the impression that she doesn't really care anymore what people think of her.

This series is a character-driven mass of hormones, and tell you the truth, I'm digging it. It's teenaged angst and relationship issues, sure, but none of the problems seem manufactured (so far) by the mangaka. The reason it works for me is that the characters, even if they're jerks, act like people. Even those we don't know much about seem like people rather than "Stereotype A."

The artwork is still strange. I don't think that will change, though.

I think I'm going to continue this one.

In this volume of Say I Love You it focuses a bit on some side characters Aiko and Kakeru. Once again issues are addressed in this book. This time it's issues dealing with weight, feeling you have to change oneself for a boyfriend, cheating, and friends with benefits.

I will warn you however there is some sex scenes in this though it's not too graphic. Hopefully, I can pick up volume 3 soon.

This short review will be repeated on every single volume. Previously, it sat at four stars; I was young and into dumb shit.

Because it was trendy to like books where the popular guy gets with the nerdy girl, I liked this back then. Now, I’m so over these tropes. He’s not even that great. Hell, just about everyone sucks here.

5 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Suki-Tte Ii Na Yo a.k.a Say I Love You

A light read filled with positive messages.

(The rating and review are conclusion for all of the volumes excluding the synopsis. Beware of spoiler.)

《 Plot 》
The pace of the story is good. Although there are 18 volumes all over, it doesn’t make you lose interest in it. The story starts by introducing Mei who's a bully victim. She doesn’t have any friends because she always distances herself from people. This is because she has been betrayed by her friends back in the middle school. Ever since then, she never trusts people anymore. However, she begins to change when she gets to know Yamato. Yamato is a popular guy that has many friends and is wayyy too friendly with girls. He starts to approach Mei when she kicked him because of some misunderstanding that happened. Yamato pursues Mei every day which eventually leads them being together. The story starts to develop from there and it’s being told from Mei’s POV.

《 Characters 》
Mei Tachibana, the heroine
When Mei starts falling in love with Yamato, she feels scared of showing everything to him. I can relate to that a lot because you don't know how things will be so it's scary. There are other moments that I can relate to but I won't tell you to avoid spoiler.

At one point, Mei begins to change herself by engaging more with people around her. That's what makes her strong and kind girl. She is very observant of people around her and tries to help them the best she can. I love her character development.

Yamato Kurosawa, the hero
Yamato is a typical cool who is popular for his kindness. Despite being a cool popular guy, he still has his own flaws. There are some issues that he struggles with but didn't let people see him in that way. I wouldn't really picture him as a really good guy. He has his flaw but he learns to change little by little.

《 Pros & Cons 》
Realistic & healthy relationship
↳ There are several couples born in this comic and each of them shows what relationship is likely to be in real life especially Mei’s relationship. If you have been in a relationship, several situations that happened will make you go “Omg, I went through that too!”. On top of that, most of them are in a healthy relationship making it enjoyable to read.

Positive messages
↳ It touches the issue of bully and friendship. Although Mei has been bullied, she doesn’t retaliate at those who had betrayed her back then. It also shows that life is more wonderful with loyal companions being by your side.

The art drawn
↳ It’s not that the art are bad or anything. It’s just not really my cup of tea. I noticed that the art was changing slightly as the volume continues on. It got better in my opinion.

《 Extras 》
My favourite manga! I keep going back to this whenever I feel like reading something light and fun. This is my first manga that I read when I first started to read comic. I was so happy when I found out this comic had completed in English version. These are several quotes that I love from this story.
“Nothing makes a girlfriend more insecure than a boyfriend who's kind to everyone.”
“No matter how beautiful you are, when you're dating someone, all of your flaws come out.”
“If you want to move forward, sometimes, you can't keep doing things the way you've always done them. That peace of mind ruins you and hurts people.”
“You can get stronger by loving others and letting them love you.”

⚝ Who should read? ⚝
❥ Enjoy high school story.
❥ Love friendship theme story.
❥ Can tolerate typical “famous guy” falls for “unpopular girl”.

✎ Synopsis Volume 2
Mei decides that she will change slowly by believing in people back. She wants to make friends and change herself. Mei and Yamato somehow are in relationship. Will these two make it?

4.5, while not as strong as the last one I think that's mostly due to the subject matter being less interesting to me. Mei and Tachibana's romance is starting to grow on me. You can tell Tachibana has genuine interest and his expression of love being this playboy-y sudden kisses is a nice dichotomy. And it plays well off of the thoughtful, broody, and reactive Mei very well.
We get a really neat exploration into teenage sexuality with Hayakawa. I was expecting him to be some sort of asshole that gets little growth but we see him develop a lot. Hazuki seems to really want this manga to he about getting out of hard situations like Mei's bullying and she sticks to it here with Hayakawa. She could've had him stay the sexaholic douche but instead she gives him a background of abuse that leaves him missing true love and finding it through meaningless hookups before realizing it wasn't enough compared to the stronger genuine feelings he had for Chiharu who helped him in his time of need when he was younger. That takes an honest approach to handling with people that act out in poor ways to escape larger issues and I was shocked and glad to see that here thanks to Hazuki's skill with a pen. And it seems she'll be doing something with the Queen Alpha Bitch Aiko as we see her body image issues and struggles with self-love over gaining affections from others. I do hope we get some more light on her though. Its still unclear how she turned into such a bully.
It's clear Hazuki meant what she said in the volume 1 interview about creating a series that shows how to get out of situations. She handles her characters, and their representation of difficulties teens can take, very well with vulnerability, reflection, and healing in mind.
I can tell this series is gonna be a comfy and healing read and I cant wait to read more!

After really enjoying reading the first manga in the series, I decided to buy the next volume. I was a bit worried about this manga because the main characters get together in the first volume and the series is 18 volumes long. I was wondering what would happen in this series when in many others it could take 18 volumes for the characters to get together. However, I am glad that I continued with this series because I rather enjoyed this volume. It put forth a lot of interesting points about love through the storylines of the main characters and the side characters. I will put the next volume on my want to buy list and I will hopefully get around to buying it and reading it in 2020. I would say that this series is quite graphic in the sexual content so I wouldn't recommend it to younger readers, but apart from that the main couple presents a healthy relationship (although there are some toxic/not healthy people in the series), and it's a lot of fun seeing what happens next.

This was better than the first volume for me because I finally got a glimpse of the potential that Mei and Yamato has as a couple. I found Yamato much more bearable in this volume and he was incredibly sweet to Mei.

There was a lot of character development for the secondary characters. We got to see a glimpse of Kakeru and Chiharu. I was a bit confused at first because I honestly didn't remember these characters from the first volume. Plus I though Kakeru was the same guy that's in love with Aiko. While it was nice that the author took time in this volume to develop the secondary characters, I'm finding a good chunk of them insanely unlikeable. Kakeru treats Chiharu like crap but we are supposed to root for them as a couple? Giving unlikeable characters a tragic backstory isn't going to make me like the characters any more better.

Overall, this was a quick and entertaining read.

Definite improvement on the first volume. I ranked this one higher because it actually deals with sex and has a variety of perspectives on it. I thought for sure we’d see a different outcome to the mic drop at the end of the first volume, but nope, that happened.

It makes it both more realistic and helps it stand out from most other shojo. I loved Mei continually sticking up for herself and what she wants - she absolutely shuts down a jackass with a forcefulness you don’t often see in your genre heroines. What’s his name is a little more tolerable too, though still pretty dull.

The focus on side characters makes this more palatable to me than the first volume - there’s trauma drama all over the place (including some good backstory for Mei). There’s a lot of healing, too, but not everything gets fixed and it’ll be interesting to see where it goes in further volumes.

GOD AIKO IS SO ANNOYING??? Seriously not a single redeeming trait about her am I supposed to give a fuck after they gave her some backstory?? If anything I like her less after that. Character development is so fast in this which I wish was different??? It’s no fun if it takes them two chapters to change their ways let’s build it up a little….. kinda not enough moments of the main ship, but something I really love is Yamato is not pushing her? Yeah he kisses her and stuff but if she says no He wont insist on doing something that makes her uncomfortable and he’s not pushy about having sex with her or even dating like officially??? (Idk are they dating are they not…) so yeah a real man pls stay like this. P.s Hayakawa is well…. A character that exists

Man do the characters in this manga have issues. I liked that some of the side characters are fleshed out more, but honestly half the time I had a hard time figuring out who was who. I had to keep flipping back and forth because a lot of the characters look too similar especially in some of the close shots...

I do really like that this isn’t your typical “sweet and innocent” romance manga. The characters have sex and guys get elections... seriously that has always bugged me in fiction where there are obvious points in which the guy should be getting a woody and doesn’t bc the author/publisher is too freaking prudish.
