Beneath the Surface is an adventure story that explores real threats to marine life and solutions. Follow young Xing Xing, just before she turns twelve, as her life quickly changes once she discovers a world of surprises under the sea that extend beyond her wildest dreams. While it is a vastly different way of life from what she’s familiar with, it is also a world that Xing Xing is deeply connected to, just as deeply as she is connected to her life on land. From her immediate welcome into the mysterious inner depths of Earth until the day she must finally return to its surface, Xing Xing's adventure reveals the inseparable connection and relationship between land and sea that had been lost for nearly a millennium.

An undersea fantasy adventure with a positive ecological message. All told from the point of view of a Chinese girl who loves to swim, and learned something special and magical about herself. Fun world-building, essentially a simple mermaid story with explanations of the underwater society more than a standard plot. But the real purpose is the theme of environmental responsibility, with the text devising an entertaining and whimsical way to express that to young readers. In this, a successful story.

This fantastic story follows a child on the threshold of the transition to teenager and their discovery of a fantastical family secret that takes them on a thrilling adventure into an amazing underwater world. It mixes elements of Chinese myth with beautiful descriptions of factual underwater wonders that brilliantly capture the awe-some experience of appreciating our vast ocean life and representing the desire to protect it. I can't wait for the next installment of the series, and thoroughly recommend this first offering!
